The subject of race is a thorn in the side of many Americans, mainly between what we call black and white people. One ever hardly sees a public debate concerning race issues when it concerns Korean Americans, Mexican Americas, Native Americans, Japanese Americans, (in other words, Brown, Red and Yellow people) outraged over how white people mistreat them too. Of course, these other "races" have suffered discrimination under white America's America. But no other two people "butt heads" about race more then black people and white people. This book searches out the origin of what power prepared white or Caucasian civilization as vicegerents of world affairs, how they got in and out of Europe 6,000 years ago, the genetic differences between blacks and whites and a final battle between God the Devil, truth and untruth.

California's Silicon Valley is home to the greatest concentration of designers in the world: corporate design offices at flagship technology companies and volunteers at nonprofit NGOs; global design consultancies and boutique studios; research laboratories and academic design programs. Together they form the interconnected network that is Silicon Valley. Apple products are famously "Designed in California," but, as Barry Katz shows in this first-ever, extensively illustrated history, the role of design in Silicon Valley began decades before Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak dreamed up Apple in a garage.

Offering a thoroughly original view of the subject, Katz tells how design helped transform Silicon Valley into the most powerful engine of innovation in the world. From Hewlett-Packard and Ampex in the 1950s to Google and Facebook today, design has provided the bridge between research and development, art and engineering, technical performance and human behavior. Katz traces the origins of all of the leading consultancies -- including IDEO, frog, and Lunar -- and shows the process by which some of the world's most influential companies came to place design at the center of their business strategies. At the same time, universities, foundations, and even governments have learned to apply "design thinking" to their missions. Drawing on unprecedented access to a vast array of primary sources and interviews with nearly every influential design leader -- including Douglas Engelbart, Steve Jobs, and Don Norman -- Katz reveals design to be the missing link in Silicon Valley's ecosystem of innovation.

Review

Hear it from an endlessly awe-inspired expat: a place of unabashed, human-centered positivism, and old-school innovation within the vast and diverse ecosystem of design, Silicon Valley is a testament to the enduring greatness of American applied creativity. Barry Katz's history is a delight for experts and accidental readers alike, as it touches upon so many icons and necessary fixtures of everyday life.

(Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Architecture & Design, and Director, Research & Development, The Museum of Modern Art)

Beneath an engaging narrative lies a carefully researched and theoretically grounded understanding of the critical role that design has come to play in the world's most dynamic center of innovation.

(Ikujiro Nonaka, Professor Emeritus of International Corporate Strategy, Hitotsubashi University)

This is an astonishing book. Barry Katz brings the history of Silicon Valley design to life. Often surprising, always informative, Make It New takes us to the birth of innovation in a time and place that made today's world what it is.

(Ken Friedman, Chair Professor of Design Innovation Studies, Tongji University, and University Distinguished Professor, Swinburne University of Technology)

In Make It New, Barry Katz does a masterful job of telling the story of Silicon Valley's evolution in creative design dating back some 60 years. It is filled with good stories and great insight and is a must-read for anyone in high tech or anyone engaged in product development and marketing. I came away with a much greater appreciation of why design matters and that it is more than skin deep. Make It New is a great primer for understanding how design is an integral part of innovation, quality, user-friendliness, and reflecting the distinctiveness of your brand.

(Regis McKenna, author of Total Access and Relationship Marketing)

But a little mixed up organizationally, leaves a lot out, and is a little too much like a laundry list of people and accomplishments. But important history to know; I'm glad someone started to capture.

By Jay Wilson Most people know about Silicon Valley's success and some have heard about the part design played in its rise but its history has never been fully documented until now. Barry Katz reveals what it actually took for design to evolve from a subservient position to engineering and marketing into a core competency for innovative companies designing products that people actually want to buy.“Design Thinking” is now a recognized strategy and a methodology to frame ANY problem from a design perspective and the credit goes to those design pioneers who fought the good fight...

Hailed by Ruthie Knox as “fun, sexy, and sharp as a spike heel,” the Sex, Love & Stiletto series from USA Today bestselling author Lauren Layne introduces the glamorous columnists of Stiletto magazine and the ridiculously hot men who love them. Now all four novels—After the Kiss, Love the One You’re With, Just One Night, and The Trouble with Love—are together in one eBook bundle. AFTER THE KISS“After the Kiss is a knock-your-stilettos-off, total page-turning treat that had me fan-girling up within the first chapter.”—USA Today bestselling author Mira Lyn Kelly Julie Greene loves flings: first dates, first kisses, that first sexy romp between the sheets. But when Julie has to write an article about the magical shift between dating and “I do,” she’ll need a man brave enough to reform a total commitment-phobe. Normally, that man would be Mitchell Forbes, a devastatingly handsome workaholic who stays in relationships far too long. But Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once, and Julie’s exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, he’s the polar opposite of what she needs—and exactly what she wants. LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH“Spunky, flirty, and full of sass, Love the One You’re With is everything a romance should be! Lauren Layne has a winner.”—New York Times bestselling author Christie Craig After her fiancé turns out to be the kind of rotten, cheating liar she always warns her readers about, Grace Brighton swears off relationships for six months. She makes an exception for a joint article on dating with a gorgeous counterpart from the men’s magazine Oxford—and tries to tell herself she’s not instantly smitten. Jake Malone only agreed to this fluffy assignment because his playboy reputation makes his new editor nervous. But after just one date with snooty, sumptuous, sensational Grace, Jake starts taking this assignment a whole lot more seriously. JUST ONE NIGHT“Sexy, sassy, and surprisingly sweet, Just One Night is a total page-turner!”—New York Times bestselling author Donna Alward As Stiletto’s resident “sexpert,” Riley McKenna writes articles that are the magazine’s most read. But when Riley is forced to confront a long-hidden secret—that her own sexual experience is limited to one awkward college encounter—she calls in the favor of a lifetime. Sam Compton knows two things about his best friend’s little sister: She’s the woman for him, and she’s completely off-limits. Sam shouldn’t even consider Riley’s proposition. But after a one-night stand in the name of research, they learn firsthand that, with each other, there’s no such thing as just one night. THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE“The Trouble with Love is a heartwarming read I devoured in one sitting and haven’t been able to stop smiling over since.”—New York Times bestselling author Violet Duke Five years ago, Emma Sinclair was a blushing bride-to-be. Now she’s the ice queen of the Manhattan dating scene—and her latest article forces her to face the devilishly sexy guy who ditched her at the altar. After giving up everything for a pro soccer career, Alex Cassidy is hanging up his cleats and taking a shot at journalism . . . in the same city as his former fiancée. But Emma isn’t the innocent girl he remembers. She’s chic, sophisticated, and assertive—and she wants absolutely nothing to do with him. The trouble is, Alex has never wanted her more.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sexy, Hilarious, & Addicting! By Jen @ Star-Crossed Book Blog This is a must-read series! They are fun, sexy and keep me entertained until the last page.1. After the Kiss - 5/5After the Kiss was a beautiful love story that I fell deeply in love with. Julie has to write an article for the magazine she works for and Mitchell is set on winning a bet. What unfolds is constant entertainment that was funny and gut wrenching. Mitchell was control, sexy and a heart of gold.......for the most part. Be prepared for Mitchell to win your heart and leave you hot, flustered and fanning your face!2. Love the One You're With - 4.5/5 StarsJake and Grace are pitted against each other - They each have to write an article after each date to see who can read the opposite sex better. Grace is refined, sophisticated and from money. Well, after some of the stunts she pulls, I may have to temporarily revoke the sophisticated part ha. Jake Malone is alluring, magnetic and sexy as hell. He can play games with me anytime he wants to! The games they played against each other were funny and thoroughly entertaining! You could feel the sexual tension between them and I kept hoping one of them would fully drop the charade.3. Just One Night - 5/5 StarsAn adorable friendship to lovers story. When you became entangled in the heart of it all, it took an amazing turn into something that was raw and emotional. Anytime Sam and Riley were together it was fun, sexy and emotional. Their long friendship allowed them to know each other's faults and downfalls and that added so much depth to their relationship. Because underneath it all, they are good friends who care for one another. Their friendship always bordered on platonic but there was an underlying simmering of need and lust. And when they start to cross that line, WOW, they are breathtaking together. You HAVE to read Sam and Riley's story!4. The Trouble with Love - 5/5 StarsThe Trouble With Love was hilarious, sexy, heartbreaking, and addicting. Emma and Cassidy's past has been dangled in front of us in the previous books, but we never really knew what happened to them. Why it all fell apart. But what made this book so potent, was not only the fact that we already knew both of them, but the idea that they could have a second chance at love. There is something extraordinary in the ability to resurrect something that was demolished. To find hope that love still exists after the insurmountable happens. And Emma and Cassidy's tumultuous journey is exceptional. It was the perfect ending to the Sex, Love & Stiletto's series!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. and at home in my most comfortable PJS, and discovered that there is no bad ... By ashley detweiler You had me at Stiletto. This series is incredible! I have read these books at a Starbucks in New York City, on a train from Center City Philadelphia headed towards the outskirts of the city, and at home in my most comfortable PJS, and discovered that there is no bad place to read a Lauren Layne novel. The Sex, Love, and Stiletto series is quick, funny, passionate, and reads like your favorite rom-com.AFTER THE KISS:Julie and Mitchell makes me wish I had an opposites attract relationship...immediately. Everyone loves the “butterflies stage” of romance, and this novel makes you fall in love with love, from the butterflies through the happily ever after.LOVE THE ONE YOU'RE WITH:Grace and Jake’s story is HOT. It is. The back and forth buildup, competitiveness, and chemistry between these two is so real, it makes you want to cancel all of your plans for the foreseeable future and read this book from beginning to end, and back again.JUST ONE NIGHT:Riley McKenna is the girl everyone wants to be, sexy, confident, and fun. Getting to see her vulnerable side is unexpected, but completely wonderful. Suddenly that “unachievable girl” becomes someone you just have to know. I just want to read Riley and Sam’s story over and over again.THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE:If you have ever thought about the one that got away – than this is the book for you. Emma and Alex are perfect for each other, and too stubborn to admit it. From the break-up, the make-up, and all of the in-between, you get two characters that are perfectly flawed, real, and a couple of people you want to cheer on from the very first page.

I started out of order with The Trouble with Love and was immediately hooked. I quickly went out and gobbled up everything of Lauren Layne's that I could get my hands on. This series is one of my favorites and each book was fantastic. I love that they are funny, sweet and sexy all rolled into a great read that I wasn't able to put down. I highly recommend.

During the second half of the twentieth century, the forest industry removed more than 300 billion cubic feet of timber from southern forests. Yet at the same time, partnerships between public and private entities improved the inventory, health, and productivity of this vast and resilient resource. A comprehensive and multilayered history, Forestry in the U.S. South explores the remarkable commercial and environmental gains made possible through the collaboration of industry, universities, and other agencies.

This authoritative assessment starts by discussing the motives and practices of early lumber companies, which, having exhausted the forests of the Northeast by the turn of the twentieth century, aggressively began to harvest the virgin pine of the South, with production peaking by 1909. The rapidly declining supply of old-growth southern pine triggered a threat of timber famine and inspired efforts to regulate the industry. By mid-century, however, industrial forestry had its own profit incentive to replenish harvested timber. This set the stage for a unique alliance between public and private sectors, which conducted cooperative research on tree improvement, fertilization, seedling production, and other practices germane to sustainable forest management.

By the close of the 1990s, concerns about an inadequate timber supply gave way to questions about how to utilize millions of acres of pine plantations approaching maturity. No longer concerned with the future supply of raw material and facing mounting global competition the U.S. pulp and paper industry consolidated, restructured, and sold nearly

20 million acres of forests to Timber Investment Management Organizations (TIMOs) and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), resulting in an entirely new dynamic for private forestry in the South.

Incomparable in scope, Forestry in the U.S. South spotlights the people and organizations responsible for empowering individual forest owners across the region, tripling the production of pine stands and bolstering the livelihoods of thousands of men and women across the South.

Groundbreaking for the Ohio portion of the National Road, the Nation’s first federally-funded interstate highway, took place on July 4, 1825 at St. Clairsville in eastern Ohio’s Belmont County. Construction was temporarily halted three miles west of Springfield in western Ohio in 1839 when funds ran out. Beginning a mile west of the Ohio River, stone markers were erected at one mile intervals to where the National Road stopped west of Springfield. A total of 175 of these mile markers or “mile stones,” which gave the distance to Cumberland, Maryland, where the National Road started, and to the nearest towns and county seats, could once be seen marking the miles along the National Road in Ohio. This richly illustrated publication provides an in-depth look at an interesting aspect of the Ohio National Road’s history. Only about a third of these 175 markers can still be seen at their historic locations today. Some were moved to U.S. Route 40, and many can be found displayed or stored at various state or local museums and historical societies. This publication provides the historic and present location, as well as photographs of all of the known surviving Ohio mile stones, and discusses the changes in the engraving styles that occurred over time. Several early views of uniquely-shaped Ohio National Road markers, including two capped with stone balls are also included. Interspersed throughout the book are historic and recent images of Ohio National Road landmarks, including bridges, taverns, automobile-era motels, and other points of interest near the markers. Mile markers along the so-called Dayton Cutoff, made to mimic National Road mile stones and fool travelers into thinking they were on the National Road, are also discussed. This book is over 300 pages and contains more than 75 maps, 400 photographs, as well as 4 tables and 3 appendices.

By Lorna Hainesworth This book is very readable while containing an extraordinary degree of detail on the National Road mile markers in Ohio based on a phenomenal amount of research. The illustrations, both in photography and drawings, really add to the wealth of information found here. The author has gone to great depth to ferret out everything that can possibly be found on the Ohio National Road mile markers starting out with a basic description of all mile markers along the entire Historic National Road. No topic relative to mile markers along the Ohio National Road, including the famous (or infamous) Dayton Cutoff, is left out. This book covers all aspects. What a great and different addition to the existing collection of works on our national treasure. No Historic National Road enthusiast's library can be complete without the inclusion of Ms. Gerken's book.

It's a survey that documents every stone's location, inscription, and fate with photographs, drawings, explanatory text, and color coded maps. Mixed in with this detailed cataloging are various stories and supplemental facts that make it an interesting read as well as a unique and valuable reference.

An extensive illustrated survey of one of the most inventive design minds of the twentieth century. Combining whimsy and elegance, Piero Fornasetti transformed everyday objects like cups, scarves, and plates into much sought-after works of art with his idiosyncratic motifs, such as the hand, the female face, and luminescent fish. His dazzling pieces of trompe l’oeil furniture, created in collaboration with Gio Ponti, are also highly prized by collectors worldwide. Fornasetti’s boundless imagination is celebrated here in a book published to document a major retrospective exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The first half of the monograph is organized by type and includes Fornasetti’s paintings, drawings, and furniture. The second half focuses on favorite themes: his use of trompe l’oeil, architectural drawings, and his variations on the face of a famous operatic beauty. Featuring 400 illustrations covering almost fifty years of a protean and prolific designer and artist like no other, this is a must-have for Fornasetti connoisseurs and anyone interested in design.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great for Young Adults By Michael Lapelosa This book is part two, of a three part series about Ancient Rome. Since each book in the series can stand alone, I've only read this book because its the era that interests me the most, but I can assume the other two books follow the same format and writing style. "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Republic" begins with how the Roman Republic was developed after the demise of the last of the ancient kings were overthrown , and ends with the creation of Rome's first absolute ruler. I found the author's discussion of the constant political struggles enjoyable and interesting. However, I found the author's prose inconsistent and not especially gripping. I recognize these books are aimed at young adult readers, therefore I expect to find somewhat uncomplicated writing. Although the events and facts are told in straightforward understandable manner, the lack of crystallized, clear prose prevented a higher rating.

During the time of last Roman king, people made protest against the king and his sons for their transgressions against the kingdom and then the Roman Republic risen. The republic personnel run the country for many years and then complexity created among the system and the rulers. So again the republic has fallen. You will find all of the above interesting information in this book. So have this one for have a good read.
