Ever wonder why we haven't blown up the world yet? This crazy but true story of sex and drugs and rock 'n roll with more than a dash of Cold War nuclear intrigue will make you wonder even more... PN2 Bryce Wainwright, US Navy, is mistakenly posted to a top secret NATO base in the remote highlands of Scotland. It is early 1971 and the Cold War is red-hot. He arrives without a clue as to what the complex is about or what the select few Commandos' mission is. Before long he finds himself embroiled in a nuclear 'situation.' Hunkering down under the watchful eye of the XO, his duties are set. Unlike most of the small US contingent, however, a desperate Bryce soon seeks out the manifold pleasures of the senses whenever and wherever he can. Illustrated throughout, this bizarre freewheeling romp amidst Navy Seals and Secret Agents will make you both laugh and cry while at the same time cause you to wonder how in the world will we all survive... Bruce Cawley, after traveling the world first in the US Navy and then as student and teacher, has wound up in Australia, where he lives with his illustrator wife Sylvia amongst gumtrees, many varied antipodean creatures, and his beloved '64 David Brown tractor, Charlie.

The US and USSR have enough nuclear weapons pointed at each other to destroy the world several times over. That reality affected everything we did and thought (yes, I was alive then...). The theory was that Mutually Assured Destruction, aka MAD, would convince each side that launching those weapons would be a terrible idea. MAD was such an apt acronym; although it did work - we're all still here - the fact that Mutually Assured Destruction was a thing to be contemplated seems fairly mad to me.But this book isn't so much about the Cold War as about how an ordinary sailor coped with it. It's not a political polemic or spy thriller; it's a slice of life in a particular period and locale. I say ordinary sailor because although the author was assigned to a top-secret nuclear facility in Scotland, it was a clerical mistake; he didn't have the usual security clearance, and had no idea of the facility's purpose until after he arrived. Not that it mattered, since his duties were clerical, he appears to have performed well while on duty, and he didn't give up any secrets. His growing understanding of his situation, a very intense moment while on guard duty, and the mysterious "fedora man" who seems to follow him around all contribute to an undertone of dread and paranoia. So how does an ordinary sailor cope? By partying! The author seeks out the wildest assortment of local lunatics with whom to get inebriated and cavort through an endless series of outrageous adventures. It was hard to believe at times, especially since I have never served. But when I described some of these inebriated outrageous adventures to a Navy vet buddy, he said, "Yeah, that sounds about right." And that's what's right about this book: despite the potential for Cold War doom & gloom, it's *very* entertaining. The author has a real knack for describing the various members of the Scots/Brit "loaded class"; as crazy as they are at times, they become real people. The author also has a real knack for building suspense - not so much about Cold War secrecy, but about "how is he going to get out of this fix?" And there are fixes aplenty: death-defying car and motorcycle rides; formal parades while totally wasted; a hilarious case of scabies; a cleaver-wielding angry father.I had a hard time putting this book down because I wanted to find out what new fix the author would get into (and out of?), sometimes wondering if he'd even survive. It's an easy read that will leave you alternately howling with laughter, biting your nails with dread, and shaking your head in disbelief.

(He now denies being the Mad Marble Roller, but that's another story). He is a heck of a writer. Others here have described the book better than I, but I can only add that I'm glad I had him send me a copy from Australia. It brought back a lot of memories of a strange time. Those who didn't experience military service as "someone who doesn't fit in" may begin to grok the insanity of the 1960s as they travel along with this Merry Prankster. --- One suggestion: As you read the book, use Google Earth and check out the places he writes about in the book. It will add a new dimension to the somewhat psychedelic experience of following this guy along his adventures.

I really enjoy the personal way in which the author keeps you, the reader engaged and wanting to continue reading the next chapter. I also like the varied length of chapters to be able to reset the time of day or transition to historical facts. I first became aware of Mr Cawley's writings in his first book, 'Over the Hump' which was a hilarious story of the good old days of college life. Boy! did those guys have one hell of a night!I highly recommend this book.
