I have to say, I am thirteen and I SERIOUSLY enjoyed reading it. It's fun and cute and adorable. Would be very useful to Disney kids, because they could relate the book to Peter pan.

This book straddles the divide between personal story and period history. In his finely researched account, Jay D. Moore follows the life of a driven, genius stock analyst brought to the brink of insanity by alcohol. A second thread traces the story of a physician humbled and bewildered by the same struggle. Finally, the story traverses the path through life of an unimaginably wealthy man, telling how he decides to use his treasure to benefit others. It has been said that there are no new ideas, only history we have not yet learned. No new ideas were brought to the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, for everything the co-founders and early members did had been done before. What they managed to change, however, was to stick to their knitting. The facts presented here help separate the truth from legend, as the story of Alcoholics Anonymous and the Rockefeller connection is presented with more depth and analysis than has been brought to the subject before.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Dr. Ernest Kurtz Asked For This Book Almost Twenty Years Ago By Gary Neidhardt The esteemed Ernest Kurtz, in a 1997 recording at the NAWS Convention, requested that this book by Jay D. Moore be written. Dr. Kurtz said that the information regarding J.D. Rockefeller Jr. and his associates barely had been touched and that there was much investigation yet to be done. Mr. Moore has uncovered files directly from the Rockefeller archives that previously were unknown to recovery historians, and therefore, Mr. Moore deserves a great deal of credit for his work. The financial contributions of the Rockefeller associates are far more substantial than previously thought while some common myths have been disproven. However, the book itself can be somewhat uneven. While there are more than 600 footnotes in the book, there can be assertions that are begging for sources that aren't provided. Mr. Moore appears to attempt to tell the entire story of Alcoholics Anonymous during the period of Rockefeller influences, which is an extremely difficult objective. There are some observations made that may not be entirely accurate, such as where Wilson's ideas for the Twelve Steps originated. But I would still be willing to grant this book a fifth star if it wasn't for one thing: there is no index. Valuable works like Mr. Moore's demand an index be present so other historians can go directly to, say, all the contributions of Frank Amos, without having to read the entire book. Mr. Moore can also make occasional comments regarding current events, which in a historical work are not assets to his work. But it is worth the read. AA has more debts to the Rockefellers than previously documented, which makes this book a good investment.

By mike bandy This book is a must have for those interested in the REAL TRUTH about the Rockefeller support of AA from the start. I found it amazing how much information that has been written in other books about AA history is just flat wrong. The proof is in the pages of this book.

John Caldwell Calhoun (March 18, 1782 – March 31, 1850) was a leading politician and political theorist from South Carolina during the first half of the 19th century. A powerful intellect, Calhoun eloquently spoke out on every issue of his day, but often changed positions. Calhoun began his political career as a nationalist and proponent of protective tariffs; later, he switched to states' rights, limited government, nullification and free trade. He is best known for his intense and original defense of slavery as a positive good, for his promotion of white people's rights, and for pointing the South toward secession from the Union. Although Calhoun’s views are no longer considered popular in contemporary periods, in 1957, the United States Senates honored Calhoun as one of the "five greatest senators of all time." The Disquisition on Government was a book that incorporated Calhoun's views on government as seen from the point of view of the permanent minority (the South).

I have had a number of songs on radio in my country. Having learned how to use my DAW effectively and how to use plug-ins and effects, I wanted to learn how to mix properly so that I could get better, wider, deeper punchier mixes, so that I could put my personal stamp on my songs.I purchased Amos Clarke's kindle books - both that he has written and have truly benefited by his knowledge. I do know that one can learn a lot by experimenting on one's own, but if there is somebody out there who can cut to the chase and teach you great mixing techniques, why spend hours and hours scratching your head when he can help instantly to broaden your horizons on the said subject.Thank you Amos.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Ok for beginners By Bogdan Razumeyko This was not way to useful for my level i guess. However, there are good tips for beginners. "Macro mixing for small studio" seemed more filled with really interesting approaches and advices.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Perfect for Novice or Pro By D Larsen Although I'm not a professional sound engineer, I very much enjoyed this book and have had fun tinkering with some software I've recently downloaded for my iMac. It really is amazing the differences that can be created with just a few modifications, as Mr. Clarke has pointed out in his useful guide. I can well imagine it would be very productive for someone with the proper equipment and a small studio. In terms of the writing and layout, I don't think he could have done a better job presenting his tips. The directions were even quite easy for me to follow - a total novice. I downloaded a copy when he had it available as a promotional item, but it would be worth the cost for anyone interested in sound recording and small studio work. This is a highly recommended product for amateur or pro. I've had fun with it.

Harold Lamb gives a comprehensive account of the life and reign of the Roman Emperor Justinian I (482-565), from his origin as the peasant Petrus Sabbatius, to the purple clad Imperator. Upon Justinian’s ascension to the throne the western provinces had been occupied by hostile barbarians for over a generation. In the east, what remained of the Roman Empire faced invasion by the Huns from the north, and by an undiminished Persian Empire across the eastern border. Despite all of this Justinian managed to withstand the waves of invasion, embark on vast architectural projects across the empire, and restore Roman mastery over Mediterranean. Lamb also examines the colorful personalities surrounding Justinian. His wife Theodora, the actress turned empress, who was more spymaster than anything else; the ever victorious count Belisarius, who, despite his popularity with the military, the people, and the lost provinces he reclaimed for the empire, refused to take up arms and overthrow his emperor as so many other Roman generals had done before him. Constantinople: Birth of an Empire is a great resource for anyone interested in eastern Roman/Byzantine history during the age of Justinian.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Vivid, Readable, and Accurate By David E. Blair The British cherish their popular historians. We in the United States forget them. And of all our forgotten popular historians from the early to mid-twentieth century, Harold Lamb may well be the best of the bunch. He was immensely successful and popular as both a fiction and non fiction writer. Lamb was absolutely prolific with major screenplays to his credit, magazine articles in the best journals running into the hundreds along with thirty to forty odd books. To find this title in Amazon run a search in books for "Harold Lamb - Constantinople," and you will find all the available used offerings. Ultimately, however, the question is how does this book stand up to critical scrutiny as accurate, informative history? And the short answer is far better than G. P. Baker's biography of Justinian, and I rated that at four stars. By all means, if Justinian the Great is of interest to you, you will enjoy this book and probably learn a great deal.As with all of his histories, Lamb's grasp of his subject verges on the encyclopedic. This man had the money and time to research his projects. It is obvious that the author spent substantial time in the near east and at Ravenna and Venice researching this book. This rewards the reader with vivid descriptions and insights into both Byzantine art and architecture. All aspects of Justinian's career are well covered. The important interactions of the principal players are presented with a marvelous wealth of detail and insightful analysis. Justinian and Theodora, Narses, Belisarius, John of Cappadocia, Peter the Patrician and the rest of the cast of characters integral to the Age of Justinian are all fully developed. The major issues of the era are at least handled competently or better. The overwhelming importance of religion in all aspects of sixth century Byzantine existence is amply demonstrated. Authors such as Glanville Downey may show more depth and deeper analytical powers in regard to these matters, but Lamb provides a fascinating read that is factually almost spot on.An interesting first chapter indicates both the strengths and weaknesses of this book. It represents a prelude to the material to be covered in the bulk of the text. It is loaded with conclusory assumptions about the fall of the western Roman empire. It is also replete with translated quotes of contemporary sources and loads of factual material to support these suppositions. Also, expect some invented conversations, this is popular history after all. There may be one or two anachronistic references I can identify. Expect as well a vivid narrative history that conforms to known historical facts 99% of the time along with ample illumination of the larger issues. A summation of Lamb's thoughts on Justinian and his era is supplied in an afterword, and most interestingly a final section on "the illusion of history" closes the book. In this short closing chapter, many of the classical interpretations of the Age of Justinian are glossed. And, I find that I am far closer to agreeing with Lamb's assessment of Justinian the Great than I am with Gibbon, Toynbee, Bury, Voltaire or the other scholars cited. This book is highly recommended both as a fun and informative read and an enlightening encounter with an almost forgotten author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. good for anyone with a love of history By Susie I liked this book as I do many of the other Lamb offerings. The scope of history and the realism of the characters are captured in a captivating manner.

Life in the eye of the storm By A Customer Many of us are prone to think of ourselves as somewhat "pitiful" in comparison to others: we drive a Chevrolet; they drive a BMW: we have 1900 sq. ft. in our home; they have 3200: we make $35,000 a year; they have a yacht on the Caribbean. Suppose you were lame; a freed slave; and subject to arrest by "the leader of the free world" if he didn't like your teaching. Such was Epictetus who, along with other philosophers, was expelled from Rome by the emperor some 19 centuries ago. Epictetus was not the founder of Stoicism, but he was--apparently--its greater teacher because it is his discussions which have survived in the most nearly complete form for us. This volume contains not only the four "books" of discourses, but also the distillation called the "handbook" or "enchiridion", and various fragments preserved in other writings. These teachings were written down by Arrian, a student of Epictetus and author of a biography of Alexander the Great. Here we hear, as it were, the voice of Epictetus teaching: often within the text we have the questions of a student to whom Epictetus is replying; we are able to catch the teacher's irony and wit. It is as if we are sitting in his presence, just a little farther away than we might wish. Epictetus's "program" is simple: to teach us how to live without fear or grief or unsatisfied desire; to teach how to "worry" ourselves only over those things which we can control, which--to put it simply, as Epictetus always does--are our own reactions and responses. I cannot control my wife; I can control how I respond to her. I cannot control the Senators; I can control how I respond to them. I cannot control whether I have cancer or not; I can control how I react to that situation. Much like the Buddha's insistence that we can attain nirvana by controlling our desires, Epictetus's teaching leads, if applied, to a calmer, more "centered" and peaceful life. And who doesn't need that? [If you want Epictetus's work in a more permanent form than this paperback, buy the Loeb Classical Library hardcovers, listed as Discourses Books 1 and 2, and Discourses Books 3 and 4. The second volume also contains the Enchiridion and the Fragments.

Tom Wolfe Knows By David Jefferson I discovered Epictetus following a library checkout of a book on tape by Tom Wolfe titled "A Man in Full" (1998)- a story about two men who met by chance in Atlanta and whose lives changed drastically and positively as one (an escaped convict) reluctantly taught the other (who was in his own personal crisis) the power of what he learned in prison from the teachings of Epictetus. I could see how the ideas Wolfe found in Epictetus might change people even as dramatically as happened in the novel so I read A. A. Long's, "Epictetus: A Stoic and Socratic Guide to Life" (2002, also rated five stars). Long wrote that the best translation was by Robin Hard (this edition). Epictetus wrote nothing (all we have are his student Adrian's lecture notes). He was a former slave recognized for his talent and educated in Nero's Court, later freed, and then exiled. He set up a school in Nicopolis, Greece, taught young men from well-to-do families about stoic philosphy and his reputation grew, resulting in requests for consultations - apparently even from Emperor Hadrian. What I learned from this book is why happiness is an attainable state of mind instead of an occurance and a rational, pragmatic approach. In my field, Epictetus has been described as a pioneer of rational-emotive and cognitive-behavioral therapy (especially the former) and I would support this view. He is an amazing teacher.

Epictetus - The best translation I found By Pharmer Tom Having developed an interest in Epictetus, I bought a translation of his works, and was sorely disappointed. The wording was awkward, and phrasing often confusing or difficult to understand. This particular book was the third version of the Discourses I purchased, and I was delighted to find it understandable and enjoyable reading. You also get the complete works of Epictetus (The Discourses, Enchiridion, and Fragments), a nice bonus. I have not looked at every translation available, but I can recommend this one as well done.As for the review complaining about many typo's, I'm not sure that he is talking about this particular book. Two other translations that I bought were absolutely mangled and virtually unreadable. The "Everyman" edition is much better, understandable, and if there are a lot of typo's, I have not seen them.

In this ground-breaking project, 100 women bravely shared un-airbrushed photographs of their breasts alongside honest, courageous and moving stories about their breasts and their lives. When we talk about breasts, we talk about intimate aspects of our lives as women, including growing up, sexuality, motherhood, breastfeeding, relationships, body image, health, cancer and aging. The sensitive, beautiful photographs in Bare Reality are visually refreshing, maybe even surprising. But through this project, breasts can become the catalyst for a personal and powerful conversation about what it means to be a woman.

We live in a culture where for decades, men have been daily assaulted by unrealistic, embellished, digitally-altered, airbrushed images of the female form. Laura Dodsworth's project has brought about a mental transformation by thinking differently because she has added to my knowledge, and informed my understanding and acceptance of the wide range of realistic women's body shapes, asymmetry and proportions. I am so grateful for her contribution to my continuing education, enlightenment, and body acceptance. As a consequence, I have renewed respect for the beginning lines of the first part of Rheinhold Neibuhr's Serenity Prayer..."God, give us grace to accept with serenitythe things that cannot be changed..."She and her participants have changed my attitude and ongoing acceptance of the physical attributes of women in my life, most of which are either genetically determined, or are predominantly the result of bearing children, nurturing their young, or natural physiologic changes over time. With much gratitude...

The photographs and stories are honest, thought-provoking, beautiful, raw, funny, and inspiring. It is not often enough that women get to share their stories and perspective about their own breasts and all the subjects that come up around breasts, such as body image, sexuality, femininity and more. Everyone should read this book.
