This book straddles the divide between personal story and period history. In his finely researched account, Jay D. Moore follows the life of a driven, genius stock analyst brought to the brink of insanity by alcohol. A second thread traces the story of a physician humbled and bewildered by the same struggle. Finally, the story traverses the path through life of an unimaginably wealthy man, telling how he decides to use his treasure to benefit others. It has been said that there are no new ideas, only history we have not yet learned. No new ideas were brought to the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous, for everything the co-founders and early members did had been done before. What they managed to change, however, was to stick to their knitting. The facts presented here help separate the truth from legend, as the story of Alcoholics Anonymous and the Rockefeller connection is presented with more depth and analysis than has been brought to the subject before.

Dr. Ernest Kurtz Asked For This Book Almost Twenty Years Ago By Gary Neidhardt The esteemed Ernest Kurtz, in a 1997 recording at the NAWS Convention, requested that this book by Jay D. Moore be written. Dr. Kurtz said that the information regarding J.D. Rockefeller Jr. and his associates barely had been touched and that there was much investigation yet to be done. Mr. Moore has uncovered files directly from the Rockefeller archives that previously were unknown to recovery historians, and therefore, Mr. Moore deserves a great deal of credit for his work. The financial contributions of the Rockefeller associates are far more substantial than previously thought while some common myths have been disproven. However, the book itself can be somewhat uneven. While there are more than 600 footnotes in the book, there can be assertions that are begging for sources that aren't provided. Mr. Moore appears to attempt to tell the entire story of Alcoholics Anonymous during the period of Rockefeller influences, which is an extremely difficult objective. There are some observations made that may not be entirely accurate, such as where Wilson's ideas for the Twelve Steps originated. But I would still be willing to grant this book a fifth star if it wasn't for one thing: there is no index. Valuable works like Mr. Moore's demand an index be present so other historians can go directly to, say, all the contributions of Frank Amos, without having to read the entire book. Mr. Moore can also make occasional comments regarding current events, which in a historical work are not assets to his work. But it is worth the read. AA has more debts to the Rockefellers than previously documented, which makes this book a good investment.

By mike bandy This book is a must have for those interested in the REAL TRUTH about the Rockefeller support of AA from the start. I found it amazing how much information that has been written in other books about AA history is just flat wrong. The proof is in the pages of this book.
