Military drones have recently been hailed as a revolutionary new technology that will forever change the conduct of war. And yet the United States and other countries have been deploying such unmanned military systems for more than a century. Written by a renowned authority in the field, this book documents the forgotten legacy of these pioneering efforts, offering the first comprehensive historical and technical accounting of unmanned air, land, sea, and underwater systems. Focusing on examples introduced during the two world wars, H. R. Everett meticulously traces their development from the mid-nineteenth century to the early Cold War. A pioneering Navy roboticist, Everett not only describes these systems in detail but also reverse-engineers the designs in order to explain how they operated in real-world conditions of the time. More than 500 illustrations -- photographs, drawings, and plans, many of them never before published -- accompany the text.

Everett covers the evolution of early wire-guided submersibles, tracing the development of power, propulsion, communication, and control; radio-controlled surface craft, deployed by both Germany and Great Britain in World War I; radio-controlled submersibles; radio-controlled aircraft, including the TDR-1 assault drone project in World War II -- which laid the groundwork for subsequent highly classified drone programs; and remote-controlled ground vehicles, including the Wehrmacht's Goliath and Borgward demolition carriers.

Unmanned Systems of World Wars I and II (Intelligent Robotics and Autonomous Agents series), by H. R. Everett

Review

As the visionary pioneer of unmanned ground systems in the Department of the Navy from the Cold War to Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, Everett appropriately looks back at the origins of all unmanned systems. His impeccably researched history is as compelling as it is comprehensive.

(Rear Admiral Tim Flynn, USN (ret.), Commanding Officer, SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific (2002-2005))

It is extremely rare to come across a book that adds so much to the information available about its subject, but this book is an extreme example. Everett has produced an exhaustive and unprecedented study of the unmanned vehicles from a period that few people consider when thinking about them. This book is an absolute must for anyone interested in unmanned systems, as well as anyone interested in analog systems and early electronic systems that existed before the digital revolution.

(Bill Yenne, author of Attack of the Drones: A History of Unmanned Aerial Combat, Birds of Prey, and Drones at War)

Everett's new book is an extraordinary compendium of unmanned military technologies, ranging from the very first amazing remote-controlled prototypes in the nineteenth century to the more sophisticated ones developed during World War II and the years immediately following. A must for lovers of history of technology.

(Antonio Pérez Yuste, Professor in Telecommunications Engineering, Technical University of Madrid)

Drones are the hallmark of tech-y modern warfare, but weapons piloted from afar have been around for more than a century. These long-gone systems used servos, gyroscopes, motors, and rotary switches, and they're all lovingly described in Unmanned Systems of World Wars I and II, an encyclopedic history of remotely controlled ships, planes, and tanks.

Everett's "Unmanned Systems of World Wars I and II" presents an encyclopedic look at early autonomous weapon systems and technology, tracing the lineage of many modern weapons all the way back to the drawing board. Knowing that the book was published by the M.I.T. Press I expected something thoroughly researched, but that hardly does justice to what I believe to be the most definitive and categorical work on the subject ever published. "Unmanned Systems" presents an astonishing array of obscure efforts from all over the world, and reaching back before the 19th Century. Many of these weapons you've never heard of and I suspect were pretty much lost to history prior to the publication of this text. The book's six major sections include a look at tethered torpedoes (including the 1870s Lay Torpedo), unmanned surface vehicles (including the radio controlled target battleship USS Utah), wireless submersibles, unmanned air vehicles (including WWI's Kettering Bug and WWII's TDR-1 torpedo drone), unmanned ground vehicles, and the post-WWII development period through about 1960. It's wise to end the book prior to the modern era, where standoff weapons, UAVs, UCAVs, and drones are in common use. Predators and Global Hawks we know all about, whereas their ancestors have remained cloaked in the shadows.Everett's definitely done a masterful job locating source material and exposing many lost, and likely once secret programs. Since so many of these weapons proved impractical or impossible given technological limitations of the era in which they were built, it's not surprising that in some cases important details are scant or missing. Still, it's an incredibly impressive book, and while the text is predictably dry at times, it is nevertheless full of surprises, including a discussion of the Westinghouse Elektro walking robot from the 1939 World's Fair, details on a variety of tracked "land torpedoes" (to remotely blow up the enemy), and more. There's even an in-depth discussion of whether or not WWII's "Foo Fighters" were actually a German aerial weapon described as a Feuerball or simply an optical illusion. The book is richly illustrated with lots of photos, patent application diagrams, circuit diagrams, and line drawings.Makes an excellent addition to any technical library.

This is a terrific reference piece for the facts that it contains but also as a humbling reminder of how much was done and how far robot designers had come before this current burst of robotic design activity. The really curious reaction is what happened and why? As designers we have clearly benefited from the advent of new technology which has allowed us to spring forward with capabilities and actions that could not be achieved in the time period that Bart's book describes, - but many of the principles and applications were sound back then and it reads like many of the bot's only needed fine tuning . What happened? And are there lessons to be learned for this cycle of design activity? Bart's book is an excellent foundation to explore that and many other historical questions as well as just be amazed at what our predecessors did with so little.

Norton This is a monumental work of historical research presented as a professional publication accessible to the casual reader. It covers everything from notional projects to deployed weapon systems, aviation to ground vehicles and sea vessels. The level of detail is od extraordinary depth but still suitable for popular publication. The reader can skin over what is not of interest to focus on what they find fascinating - and there is plenty to choose from. Extends to before WWII and after as necessary for a full account, and it seems as full as just about anyone could desire. The illustrations are complete and professionally rendered. It is a handsome book, so get it onto your shelf today!

In the two decades before the Civil War, free Americans engaged in history wars every bit as ferocious as those waged today over the proposed National History Standards or the commemoration at the Smithsonian Institution of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. In One Nation Divided by Slavery, author Michael F. Conlin investigates the different ways antebellum Americans celebrated civic holidays, read the Declaration of Independence, and commemorated Revolutionary War battles, revealing much about their contrasting views of American nationalism.

While antebellum Americans agreed on many elements of national identity in particular that their republic was the special abode of liberty on earth they disagreed on the role of slavery. The historic truths that many of the founders were slaveholders who had doubts about the morality of slavery, and that all thirteen original states practiced slavery to some extent in 1776, offered plenty of ambiguity for Americans to remember selectively. FireEaters defended Jefferson, Washington, and other leading patriots as paternalistic slaveholders, if not positive good apologists for the institution, who founded a slaveholding republic. In contrast, abolitionists cited the same slaveholders as opponents of bondage, who took steps to end slavery and establish a free republic. Moderates in the North and the South took solace in the fact that the North had managed to end slavery in its own way through gradual emancipation while allowing the South to continue to practice slavery. They believed that the founders had established a nation that balanced free and slave labor.

Because the American Revolution and the American Civil War were pivotal and crucial elements in shaping the United States, the intertwined themes in One Nation Divided By Slavery provide a new lens through which to view American history and national identity.

Excerpt from Memoirs and Letters of Dolly Madison: Wife of James Madison, President of the United StatesIn undertaking a little sketch of this nature, I am quite conscious that a relative has peculiar temptations to be partial, - a temper of mind which Mrs. Madison, in the great simplicity of her character, would most cordially have disliked; and therefore, though the skill may be wanting, the endeavor will be to give facts, anecdotes, and letters, as they were handed down by near relatives, privileged to live in her household and enjoy her confidence, suppressing nothing that could interest the many who admire and respect her memory.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letters Offer Insight By carey roberts As a writer and student of Virginia history, and as a particular fan of Dolley Madison, I was delighted to find the collection of memoirs and letters compiled by Dolley's grand-niece. There is a simplcity to this collection, obvious affection for the subject. In reading the letters, especially reading a few of them aloud, personalities from the past speak to us as they are - without interpretation or comment by historians. I'm finding the book a good addition to my Virginia history collection.

The subject of race is a thorn in the side of many Americans, mainly between what we call black and white people. One ever hardly sees a public debate concerning race issues when it concerns Korean Americans, Mexican Americas, Native Americans, Japanese Americans, (in other words, Brown, Red and Yellow people) outraged over how white people mistreat them too. Of course, these other "races" have suffered discrimination under white America's America. But no other two people "butt heads" about race more then black people and white people. This book searches out the origin of what power prepared white or Caucasian civilization as vicegerents of world affairs, how they got in and out of Europe 6,000 years ago, the genetic differences between blacks and whites and a final battle between God the Devil, truth and untruth.

California's Silicon Valley is home to the greatest concentration of designers in the world: corporate design offices at flagship technology companies and volunteers at nonprofit NGOs; global design consultancies and boutique studios; research laboratories and academic design programs. Together they form the interconnected network that is Silicon Valley. Apple products are famously "Designed in California," but, as Barry Katz shows in this first-ever, extensively illustrated history, the role of design in Silicon Valley began decades before Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak dreamed up Apple in a garage.

Offering a thoroughly original view of the subject, Katz tells how design helped transform Silicon Valley into the most powerful engine of innovation in the world. From Hewlett-Packard and Ampex in the 1950s to Google and Facebook today, design has provided the bridge between research and development, art and engineering, technical performance and human behavior. Katz traces the origins of all of the leading consultancies -- including IDEO, frog, and Lunar -- and shows the process by which some of the world's most influential companies came to place design at the center of their business strategies. At the same time, universities, foundations, and even governments have learned to apply "design thinking" to their missions. Drawing on unprecedented access to a vast array of primary sources and interviews with nearly every influential design leader -- including Douglas Engelbart, Steve Jobs, and Don Norman -- Katz reveals design to be the missing link in Silicon Valley's ecosystem of innovation.

Review

Hear it from an endlessly awe-inspired expat: a place of unabashed, human-centered positivism, and old-school innovation within the vast and diverse ecosystem of design, Silicon Valley is a testament to the enduring greatness of American applied creativity. Barry Katz's history is a delight for experts and accidental readers alike, as it touches upon so many icons and necessary fixtures of everyday life.

(Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Architecture & Design, and Director, Research & Development, The Museum of Modern Art)

Beneath an engaging narrative lies a carefully researched and theoretically grounded understanding of the critical role that design has come to play in the world's most dynamic center of innovation.

(Ikujiro Nonaka, Professor Emeritus of International Corporate Strategy, Hitotsubashi University)

This is an astonishing book. Barry Katz brings the history of Silicon Valley design to life. Often surprising, always informative, Make It New takes us to the birth of innovation in a time and place that made today's world what it is.

(Ken Friedman, Chair Professor of Design Innovation Studies, Tongji University, and University Distinguished Professor, Swinburne University of Technology)

In Make It New, Barry Katz does a masterful job of telling the story of Silicon Valley's evolution in creative design dating back some 60 years. It is filled with good stories and great insight and is a must-read for anyone in high tech or anyone engaged in product development and marketing. I came away with a much greater appreciation of why design matters and that it is more than skin deep. Make It New is a great primer for understanding how design is an integral part of innovation, quality, user-friendliness, and reflecting the distinctiveness of your brand.

(Regis McKenna, author of Total Access and Relationship Marketing)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Useful history but dry By John Lilly Lots of great nuggets in here, and reminders of how many pioneers we owe a debt of gratitude. But a little mixed up organizationally, leaves a lot out, and is a little too much like a laundry list of people and accomplishments. But important history to know; I'm glad someone started to capture.

By Jay Wilson Most people know about Silicon Valley's success and some have heard about the part design played in its rise but its history has never been fully documented until now. Barry Katz reveals what it actually took for design to evolve from a subservient position to engineering and marketing into a core competency for innovative companies designing products that people actually want to buy.“Design Thinking” is now a recognized strategy and a methodology to frame ANY problem from a design perspective and the credit goes to those design pioneers who fought the good fight...

Hailed by Ruthie Knox as “fun, sexy, and sharp as a spike heel,” the Sex, Love & Stiletto series from USA Today bestselling author Lauren Layne introduces the glamorous columnists of Stiletto magazine and the ridiculously hot men who love them. Now all four novels—After the Kiss, Love the One You’re With, Just One Night, and The Trouble with Love—are together in one eBook bundle. AFTER THE KISS“After the Kiss is a knock-your-stilettos-off, total page-turning treat that had me fan-girling up within the first chapter.”—USA Today bestselling author Mira Lyn Kelly Julie Greene loves flings: first dates, first kisses, that first sexy romp between the sheets. But when Julie has to write an article about the magical shift between dating and “I do,” she’ll need a man brave enough to reform a total commitment-phobe. Normally, that man would be Mitchell Forbes, a devastatingly handsome workaholic who stays in relationships far too long. But Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once, and Julie’s exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, he’s the polar opposite of what she needs—and exactly what she wants. LOVE THE ONE YOU’RE WITH“Spunky, flirty, and full of sass, Love the One You’re With is everything a romance should be! Lauren Layne has a winner.”—New York Times bestselling author Christie Craig After her fiancé turns out to be the kind of rotten, cheating liar she always warns her readers about, Grace Brighton swears off relationships for six months. She makes an exception for a joint article on dating with a gorgeous counterpart from the men’s magazine Oxford—and tries to tell herself she’s not instantly smitten. Jake Malone only agreed to this fluffy assignment because his playboy reputation makes his new editor nervous. But after just one date with snooty, sumptuous, sensational Grace, Jake starts taking this assignment a whole lot more seriously. JUST ONE NIGHT“Sexy, sassy, and surprisingly sweet, Just One Night is a total page-turner!”—New York Times bestselling author Donna Alward As Stiletto’s resident “sexpert,” Riley McKenna writes articles that are the magazine’s most read. But when Riley is forced to confront a long-hidden secret—that her own sexual experience is limited to one awkward college encounter—she calls in the favor of a lifetime. Sam Compton knows two things about his best friend’s little sister: She’s the woman for him, and she’s completely off-limits. Sam shouldn’t even consider Riley’s proposition. But after a one-night stand in the name of research, they learn firsthand that, with each other, there’s no such thing as just one night. THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE“The Trouble with Love is a heartwarming read I devoured in one sitting and haven’t been able to stop smiling over since.”—New York Times bestselling author Violet Duke Five years ago, Emma Sinclair was a blushing bride-to-be. Now she’s the ice queen of the Manhattan dating scene—and her latest article forces her to face the devilishly sexy guy who ditched her at the altar. After giving up everything for a pro soccer career, Alex Cassidy is hanging up his cleats and taking a shot at journalism . . . in the same city as his former fiancée. But Emma isn’t the innocent girl he remembers. She’s chic, sophisticated, and assertive—and she wants absolutely nothing to do with him. The trouble is, Alex has never wanted her more.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sexy, Hilarious, & Addicting! By Jen @ Star-Crossed Book Blog This is a must-read series! They are fun, sexy and keep me entertained until the last page.1. After the Kiss - 5/5After the Kiss was a beautiful love story that I fell deeply in love with. Julie has to write an article for the magazine she works for and Mitchell is set on winning a bet. What unfolds is constant entertainment that was funny and gut wrenching. Mitchell was control, sexy and a heart of gold.......for the most part. Be prepared for Mitchell to win your heart and leave you hot, flustered and fanning your face!2. Love the One You're With - 4.5/5 StarsJake and Grace are pitted against each other - They each have to write an article after each date to see who can read the opposite sex better. Grace is refined, sophisticated and from money. Well, after some of the stunts she pulls, I may have to temporarily revoke the sophisticated part ha. Jake Malone is alluring, magnetic and sexy as hell. He can play games with me anytime he wants to! The games they played against each other were funny and thoroughly entertaining! You could feel the sexual tension between them and I kept hoping one of them would fully drop the charade.3. Just One Night - 5/5 StarsAn adorable friendship to lovers story. When you became entangled in the heart of it all, it took an amazing turn into something that was raw and emotional. Anytime Sam and Riley were together it was fun, sexy and emotional. Their long friendship allowed them to know each other's faults and downfalls and that added so much depth to their relationship. Because underneath it all, they are good friends who care for one another. Their friendship always bordered on platonic but there was an underlying simmering of need and lust. And when they start to cross that line, WOW, they are breathtaking together. You HAVE to read Sam and Riley's story!4. The Trouble with Love - 5/5 StarsThe Trouble With Love was hilarious, sexy, heartbreaking, and addicting. Emma and Cassidy's past has been dangled in front of us in the previous books, but we never really knew what happened to them. Why it all fell apart. But what made this book so potent, was not only the fact that we already knew both of them, but the idea that they could have a second chance at love. There is something extraordinary in the ability to resurrect something that was demolished. To find hope that love still exists after the insurmountable happens. And Emma and Cassidy's tumultuous journey is exceptional. It was the perfect ending to the Sex, Love & Stiletto's series!

This series is incredible! I have read these books at a Starbucks in New York City, on a train from Center City Philadelphia headed towards the outskirts of the city, and at home in my most comfortable PJS, and discovered that there is no bad place to read a Lauren Layne novel. The Sex, Love, and Stiletto series is quick, funny, passionate, and reads like your favorite rom-com.AFTER THE KISS:Julie and Mitchell makes me wish I had an opposites attract relationship...immediately. Everyone loves the “butterflies stage” of romance, and this novel makes you fall in love with love, from the butterflies through the happily ever after.LOVE THE ONE YOU'RE WITH:Grace and Jake’s story is HOT. It is. The back and forth buildup, competitiveness, and chemistry between these two is so real, it makes you want to cancel all of your plans for the foreseeable future and read this book from beginning to end, and back again.JUST ONE NIGHT:Riley McKenna is the girl everyone wants to be, sexy, confident, and fun. Getting to see her vulnerable side is unexpected, but completely wonderful. Suddenly that “unachievable girl” becomes someone you just have to know. I just want to read Riley and Sam’s story over and over again.THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE:If you have ever thought about the one that got away – than this is the book for you. Emma and Alex are perfect for each other, and too stubborn to admit it. From the break-up, the make-up, and all of the in-between, you get two characters that are perfectly flawed, real, and a couple of people you want to cheer on from the very first page.

I started out of order with The Trouble with Love and was immediately hooked. I quickly went out and gobbled up everything of Lauren Layne's that I could get my hands on. This series is one of my favorites and each book was fantastic. I love that they are funny, sweet and sexy all rolled into a great read that I wasn't able to put down. I highly recommend.
