18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Over. The. Top. ............. By S.A.S. This book drew me in immediately. The first scene Where Summer(h) is running for her life after being held captive for 3 months had my complete and total attention. Reign(H), Prez of the Henchmen MC, is shortly thereafter introduced and I was really liking his character. Cash, VP of the Henchmen MC and younger brother to Reign, is another great character. I was really getting into this book. Sigh. By the end of the book I still liked Reign and Cash, but not much else. I will say there is a lot of action in this book. It flows well and there are not many dull moments. This truly is an action packed, not a dull moment, book. Even with my many issues with this story I still continued to read. I had to see how it ended. So...Here are my issues.Editing....'their' is used instead of 'there'. 'Leaning' instead of 'learning'. Commas where comma should not be. Words missing or repeated in a sentence. Words used that I was confused by. Example..."I needed to tramp it down." and "There was a speck of surprise in his eyes before he tramped it down." Shouldn't that have been 'tamp it down' or 'tamped it down'? Then there was the quote "Martin reached up and ripped the tape off my lips, the skin smiting as he did." Maybe the word 'smiting' is used correctly in this sentence but it sounded wrong to me. I thought smite/smiting meant to strike with a firm blow. In this sentence I suppose it meant "hurting'. Not sure because, like I said, I have never seen this word used this way. Does not mean it is not correct. It just pulled me from the story because it sounded so odd.One word sentences were used throughout the whole book. It. Drove. Me. Insane. Who started this stupidity. We get "Three. Effing. Days." Effing is not the actual word used. Then there was "I. Just. Couldn't." And "What. The. Actual. Hell. Was. Going. On?" And of course the well used "What. The. Eff." Repeatedly! Eff was not the actual word used. One word sentences after one word sentences over and over. It. Was. Simply. Too. Much! I. Did. Not. Like. It.Plot...While this story is indeed action packed with not a dull moment, the plot is over the top implausible and chock-full of holes and What. The. Fudge. Just. Happened? moments. I get this is fiction, but it still has to make sense. This plot does not. Almost every character in this book was over the top. Lo, V, Wolf ( the one word man), Summer, Summer's father, Martin, Deke (I think that was his name), and Daniel. All too much and very unbelievable characters. It was like the author was just going for the shock value to the point where the story became too convoluted and...dare I say it again? Over. The. Top.Summer....I couldn't stand her. She is a martyr. Apparently a quite clueless martyr. A clueless martyr who is lusting after Reign not 24 hours after escaping her kidnappers. Kidnappers who held her captive for 3 months. In those three months of captivity she was tortured, beaten, starved, and threatened to be raped repeatedly. The first man she sees after her escape and she is lusting over him? Nope. Not buying it. Later in the story she is once again kidnapped. She has a gun hidden in her boots. Does she use it? No. She does not. She decides, the martyr that she is, that she would rather kill herself than kill anyone else. She decides that even though her kidnappers have tortured, beaten, threatened rape, and starved her she could not bring herself to kill them. No. She decides when she gets the moment to, she will kill herself. That way no one else will die while trying to save her. Ugh! Even when one of her captors is attempting to force her to perform oral sex on him, she reaches for the gun in her boot with the intention of not shooting her attacker, but of shooting herself. Oh. My. God. Could. She. Be. Anymore. TSTL?Okay. I'm done. This had the potential to be a very good book. Non stop action and not a dull moment. Unfortunately, for me, that action, and not a dull moment moments, were way too implausible and WAY over the top. The only thing I liked about this book were Reign and Cash. But they alone could not carry this book for me. No. I. Would. Not. Recommend.

10 of 13 people found the following review helpful. 3 meh stars By Nmmomof4 Overall Opinion: This was an ok read. I had some issues with the connection and the development of their relationship. There was a main time jump that was when their feelings for each other were developing, and we missed that. As a reader, I feel like I need to understand how those feelings developed in order to feel the connection. There were some sweet moments that were presented as flashbacks from that time, but I would've liked it much better if we didn't have that time jump. The ending was way too abrupt for me, and I didn't get anywhere near the amount of closure that I typically like.Storyline: This is Summer and Reign's story. Summer escapes her captors of 3 months on the night of a bad storm. She steals a car, but then crashes into a fallen tree. Reign happened to hear the crash, and finds her running from the car. He then takes her home with him, but doesn't realize the trouble that comes with her. Finally after some coaxing, Summer tells him what all has happened to her and why she is running. Reign takes it as his personal duty to protect her. There are some issues with sex traffickers, drug lords, crime bosses, moles in the mc, and family...but they get their HFN.POV: This alternated between Summer and Reign's POV.Overall Pace of Story: Good. I read it really fast, so it flowed well. I don't know if I'd call it instalove, but definitely instalust.H rating: 3 stars. Reign. He was just kind of meh for me.h rating: 4 stars. Summer. I liked how she grew more confident and was able to stick up for herself further along in the story.Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed here.Heat level: Moderate. For a mc romance, I would say this is on the low side for sex scenes...which would be a pretty normal amount for other romance genres ;)Descriptive sex: YesClosure: This didn't have enough closure for me at all, and my rating is so low mainly due to the ending. I want some concrete commitments or declarations by the end of my books, and at the most I would call this a HFN ending. See my goodreads review for a spoiler.Worth the $?: It was part of the kindle unlimited subscription, but at the $2.99 on Amazon I'd say...yeah

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Simply AMAZING! By Marta Brown This book really lured me in and I have got to admit that now I want to read everyone of Jessica's books. This book is simply PERFECT! I fell in love with Summer in this book and I have to admit that having her as a kick ass female lead with Reign as a match was simply brilliant. I doubt that I know anyone that would be as tough as these two together. This book is not your typical MC romance. I won't say it is more realistic because I've never been in one but it is definitely a bit more down to earth than most. The fight, the agony, and the utter ability to surprise with plot turns will keep you wanting more. I won't give any teasers as you need to read this book and appreciate the thrill!!!

The paper included to practice tangling is very good quality paper that my pens glides across so smoothly. I love the feel & look of the paper; quality paper makes drawing easier and looks and feels nice, too. The book's instructions can be a little confusing sometimes, but it is usually cleared up in a later lesson. This is a great value for the price.

He never expected the clues to lead to her…

Edward Adair, heir to the Duke of Boulstridge, is more interested in finding a missing family heirloom than a wife. But when his parents issue an ultimatum – marry or lose your allowance – he reluctantly agrees to attend a house party to find a bride. Instead, he discovers attractive but infuriating Miss Isabella Winthrop in his library, reading the private family journal that holds clues to the location of the heirloom.

Though Isabella finds Edward haughty and arrogant, she offers to take him to the next clue mentioned in the journal if he will pay her, which will enable her to help her brother restore his estate. Edward counters with an offer of an even larger payment…if she agrees to masquerade as his betrothed to deter the other ladies until the house party ends.

As they work together to solve the mystery their mutual attraction grows, but just when they begin to think they should make their engagement real, a secret is revealed that could destroy everything.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Highly enjoyable By Splashes Into Books This is a regency/Victorian mystery to uncover a family heirloom with a romance, too.Edward Adair is heir to the Duke of Boulstridge but his parents have had enough of his gallivanting and issue dire warnings about the consequences should he not change his ways. His father believes the best way for Edward to do this is to marry. With that in mind they have, without consulting him, organised a house party in a fortnight to which they have invited several eligible young ladies (with their mothers as chaperones). Edward is told he can invite some of his friends, too. He’s not really impressed by the idea as he hopes to make a love match like his parents and can’t see any such relationship developing from the party.Miss Isabella Winthrop is staying in the family home of the Duke as the companion to one of his mother’s friends. He is irate when he discovers her in the library reading the personal journal of his ancestor which contains clues to help uncover the location of a priceless family heirloom – a gold and pink diamond tiara. After this uncomfortable introduction the two end up working together to help discover the heirloom and mutual attraction grows. Isabella, however, has a secret and its discovery could change everything for them all.As a novella, this is a quick read and there isn’t really time for lots of character or plot development. However, this didn’t detract from making this an enjoyable story to escape into and the mystery of the missing heirloom added intrigue to the experience. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. All in all, delightful By Mrs. RML This is a charming story, featuring a plucky heroine and an earl who must marry or be deprived of much of his inheritance. There's a house party full of potential brides, a mystery to be solved and the heroine's hidden secret. They all add to the atmosphere in this spirited tale. Edward Adair, the hero, is dashing but somewhat immature -- after all, his parents are fed up with his lifestyle and his father wants him to marry (we know his mother and father, the Duke and Duchess, from "How to Beguile a Duke"). Isabella Winthrop, on the other hand, is living as a companion so that her brother doesn't have to support her. She is smart and attractive -- and interested in the family mystery and intelligent enough to piece the clues together. The two team up to solve the mystery, leaving the potential brides all by their lonesome and eventually fake an engagement so they can spend more time searching for the lost tiara (the same one Edward's mother came to England to find). This is a light, enjoyable read, with a couple who you can see fall in love as they work together -- although Edward's reaction to Isabella's true identity does seem a bit much. He really does need to grow up, but I think Isabella will take care of that. All in all, delightful.(I received in ARC in return for an honest review)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Read! By Sissymae This is book two in the series "How To". I will say that I have read the first book "How to Beguile a Duke' and feel that it is helpful if you read that book first. You can go without reading it but I found that I was glad that I did not. This is a sweet story that did not have any real bad person and was basically a story about Edward Adair, heir to the Duke of Boulstridge and Miss Isabella Winthrop. Edward parents are throwing a house party for Edward to find a bride. Edward doesn't want to be married yet but see no choice as his father is threatening to cut him off with out a penny. Isabella is having to work as a paid companion to help her brother out to pay off the family bills. Isabella is attending the house party and meets Edward. They both set out to solve a family mystery that is been in Edwards family for years. This draws them closer together and set them to pretend to be engaged to hold of the young women after Edwards and Isabella thinks with the money Edward is paying her she can help her brother. The just didn't count how their feels would turn to the real thing. A really nice read and I hope that you will like it too!

These fifteen or so square miles of east central Ohio look quiet, but have played host to nearly anything and everything that can happen to a place. I'd say it's like wading into a puddle to find it thirty feet deep, cold and full of kraken, but that would ignore the uproarious laughter, loud noises and chocolate involved. If your ancestors were from here, this won't give you their begats and dates, but it might explain who they were and who we still are. If you live here, I hope you can look back and remember most of it more or less fondly.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You'll enjoy it and learn from it. By Marian Kowalski This book is thick with details of life around Pipe Creek and Dilles Bottom. It isn't a coffee table book, and it is clear that production costs were held down in making it. The pages aren't numbered, and it has no index. But it holds serious research about Mead Township, in spite of the lighthearted chapter titles. For example, it traces the origins of the various churches, when they were built, when they were flooded or burned out and where they were rebuilt, comparing the versions published in county histories and maps from the 1800s with records kept by the denominations, residents, and remaining congregations. It also contains amusing and sometimes tragic stories about the community over the years. It delves into changes brought to the community by business, natural disasters, and coal mining, from the perspective of the people who lived there and still do.

2 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Very disappointed By CLK My mother was born in Dilles Bottom, so I thought this would be a great gift for her. I grew up hearing stories of her childhood there and I was also looking forward to reading this book and seeing all the pictures. This was enthusiastically recommended by someone from that area who posted on a message board that I visit frequently.Sorry to say that it was a real disappointment. It is written in a rambling manner and laid out in very tight, small print. The book was touted as having many great photos. Yes, it does have many, all of which are extremely small and very poor quality. It is too difficult to read.Maybe with better organization and layout, and larger print, I could recommend it. As it is now, I cannot read it in order to recommend it. It was a waste of money.

Review

“The chapter opening immediately drew me in to extent that I went straight to YouTube and began watching and listening to footage of the Cat Island festival from 2007.”

Professor David Moskowitz, University of South Dakota

“The introduction is spectacular, especially components such as "basic assumptions" and "universals"; also box on "transmission" and summary points. The colored boxes, coded for listening or important items and issues, are truly a "plus", as are the end-of-chapter references to further readings and listening.”

Professor Patricia Campbell, University of Washington

“I was very impressed with the quality of this book.  The information was concise, easy to read, but most importantly, touched on important issues in ethnomusicology that cut across cultures.”

Professor Jay Keister, University of Colorado, Boulder

“The writing is engaging, the listening guides are helpful (and not overly detailed), all the writers are knowledgeable.”

Professor Stephen Blum, CUNY Graduate Center

“The introductory sections of most chapters help to engage the students and make them feel like a part of each culture. The chapters generally have clear explanations of a culture's musical style (especially Indonesia, China, Japan, India, the Middle East, and Latin America). Having chapters written by different specialists helps to keep the student's interest because of the individual approaches taken.”

Professor John Robison, University of South Florida

“I like how the authors introduce and define musical terminology and concepts into the text as they are being talked about, rather then segregating these materials to separate chapters. This allows the instructor to talk about these terms and concepts 'in context.' I also like the straight-forward style of narrative that, at the same time, does not shy away from introducing complex problems.”

Professor Peter Marsh, California State University, East Bay

I need them for class, but (as far as I know) you don't get the cd's when renting. So know that before you rent the book.

Information is based on authors opinion By nky The narration of this book is based more on the opinion and story of the author rather than an informative textbook. I only bought this book because it was required for one of my classes, otherwise, I would not have even considered it at all.

The book is story-like, I am not a fan of that style as I prefer the authors get straight to the point when writing on diverse topics. The chapters are fairly lengthy, but it was everything I needed for a class that required this book

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Socialism and botany By Rose Hobart This eccentric and beautiful book, kept in print all these years by the noble Charles Kerr Publishers, makes the case for sentience in the plant world. France's writing is expertly rendered into careful and poetic English. The book was a part of the Workingman's Library, a counterweight to that tedious propaganda called 'education' which merely serves to further the pathological idea that capitalism is true progress. In the West, we ignorantly assign perceptive life only to blooded creatures. This book extends perceptive life to the green world and demands a humane socialism from the intricate analogy of the stamens, flowers, and roots of a republic we have denigrated and forgotten. The book is also a fine rebuff to the social-Darwinist racists and mechanists who see the universe as one great adding machine. Indeed, the universe of William Blake is not far from 'The Germs of Mind in Plants'. France's book achieves an earthy magic, where the working day, riddled with exploitation and class war, can be pierced by a dialectic of flower and fly.I strongly recommend this passionate, civilized, and highly original work. All ecological work should proceed along these lines. If it did, it would avoid the sentimentality and suburban misanthropy that so often plagues it.This book is both a treatise and a work of poetry by a true scientist. Should be contemplated as such.
