Now a large metropolitan city, Seattle was once nothing more than a few cabins, inhabited by pioneers with a vision. This book was written by Arthur A. Denny, one of the founders of Seattle. This book is a must for anyone with an interst in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Arthur Denny's version By Seattle Bliss Reader, be warned: This is Arthur A. Denny's personal version of pioneer Seattle history. It is his best attempt to paint himself the father of Seattle, but later research would reveal that his prominence in the histories was due to his financial contributions to their publishing. Though it is well-written, one must be mindful that A.A. Denny, like most successful businessmen, was highly opinionated. His references to Dr. David Maynard as the town drunk are the opinions of a "teetotaler" who likely felt that any person who consumes alcohol must be a drunk. There are many books on Seattle history that paint a more three-dimensional portrait of pioneer life - and are less one-sided. Recommended: Murray Morgan, Bill Speidel, and Clarence Bagley (even though his history was financed in part by the Denny family).Read it. It's brief, semi-accurate, and worth the time. Just remember this is Denny's version of what happened. I can only give it one star.

Hollie reluctantly agrees to go but doesn’t plan to go to wild on the trip. While on the trip Hollie eventually starts to let go of her deep seeded inhibitions and lives in the moment. The group of friends quickly find themselves in the midst of sex, parties and a good time. The journey turns into a saga of self-discovery for Hollie, as she questions her life choices and starts to regain the lost vigor of her early women hood. Upon Hollie’s return home from the trip she learns that not all things that happen in Vegas stay in Vegas.

Sample Of What’s Inside!

Because sex had always been with Mitch, it had always been inextricably linked with love. For me, at least. I didn't know what it was like to seek out physical pleasure in and of itself. I didn't know how it felt to act on the pure desire that could be ignited by a stranger. I had no experience of throwing caution to the wind and acting on primal sexual impulse. And although I'd always assumed I didn't want those things, there was a small part of me that wondered what it would feel like to do something completely out of character. Did I want to be the same Hollie I'd always been? A quiet voice reminded me that, if I wanted to reinvent myself, now was a perfect time to do it.

Now scroll up and click "BUY" to read the rest of Hollie's incredible journey!

It definitely kept my interest throughout and couldn't put the book down! The passion was just right & looking forward to the next book to see how Country & Hollywood progress!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. LOVED IT :) By Amazon Customer I LOVED this book!! I read this author's first published book, Damaged, and loved it but this one definitely showed how much her experience and skills have grown. The story line was great! I adored how the chapters went back and forth between Trevelin's version and then Izzy's version of what was going on at the time! The passion between them was awesome and kept me from putting the book down. This book definitely leaves you anxious for the next book to come out! I read in the first review that the person was aggravated because the author was not explicit on whether it was a single novel or not; however, on the cover, the first page, and the back of the book the author plainly states "A Knight Raiders Novel" which to me says this is somewhat of a series or definitely more than one. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves passion and suspense!! I can NOT wait for the next book to be released!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Rock star Romance with a Country Girl By TBledsoe I absolutely loved this book! The characters were well defined and interesting. The main characters, Isabel aka Country and Travelin aka Hollywood were great to read. Country was very quick witted with innocence that actually didn't make you want to roll your eyes. Hollywood was sarcastic and sexy but still showed a vulnerable side even when he didn't always want to. The secondary characters were also likeable even when they weren't suppose to be. I will not spoil storyline but will say that I hope Country realizes that she was being a little hypocritical at the end if the book. Her character is young and this is a first love kind of thing but she is a smart girl I hope she figures it out early in the next book. I can't wait for the next one.

Review

?Not only does Teresa Meade?s book do justice to the crucial political and economic trends in Latin America since independence, but it does so in a very readable and accessible fashion. Students enjoy reading this book and are drawn into the historical narrative from many angles, including the accounts of individual men and women, portraits of figures in popular culture, and discussions of environmental challenges. This new edition retains all the virtues of the first, while offering more images, updated lists of recommended readings, and study questions at the end of each chapter.? ? Barbara Weinstein, Silver Professor History, New York University

"Teresa Meade uses broad themes like class, gender, and ethnicity to make connections to cultural and political events. This new edition of A History of Modern Latin America challenges students to think critically about the past while providing innovative perspectives on the region." ?Jeffrey Lesser, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of History, Emory University

?An ideal textbook in how it balances well a coherent narrative thread that ties together the modern history in the region with case studies of both individual countries and broader theoretical themes.? ? Joel Wolfe, University of Massachusetts Amherst

From the Back Cover

Now available in a fully-revised and updated second edition, A History of Modern Latin America offers a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the cultural and political history of this vibrant region from the onset of independence to the present day. Throughout the text, examples of what transpired in a single nation at a specific time – such as the slave revolt in Haiti, the patriarchal rules governing marriage in Brazil, construction of the Panama Canal, and the Mexican Revolution – are examined as representative of wider phenomena and serve as segues into the ideas, conflicts, social movements, and cultural trends that populate Latin America’s rich historical landscape. The lives of prominent figures are introduced alongside those of ordinary people from a diverse array of social, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. These first-hand accounts are interspersed throughout the narrative, along with documents and excerpts from fiction, as a means of providing tangible examples of historical ideas.

With added coverage of the recent opening of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Cuba and an all new chapter exploring challenges posed by economic growth and environmental sustainability, the new edition of this popular text will be an invaluable resource for students and teachers of Latin American history.

Latin America book By Ryann Harvell Pretty good comprehensive book of modern Latin America but I didn't very much care for the organization of the book or the index. I felt like the organization made sense but that the content placement wasn't always relevant or helpful.

Excerpt from Observations of an American Soldier During, His Service With the A E. F, in France in the Flash Ranging ServiceWhen the sun arose on the 22nd of June, 1918, three great transports were lying out in the stream of New York harbor. They were filled with American soldiers for duties overseas. They were well camouflaged and well convoyed. The previous afternoon they had pulled away from a Jersey City pier, where they had taken on their human cargoes, and they were undoubtedly under sealed orders. They had slipped away quietly from the piers without attracting undue attention, and while they moved to the location where they anchored for the night, not a soldier's uniform could have been detected from shore even after the most scrutinizing search with the best binoculars obtainable. The departure was made without a word of warning and not a fond good-bye. It was accomplished with a methodical silence that called for admiration. It is the way Uncle Sam does things during war times.Just before 9 o'clock on that beautiful June morning, simultaneously but without communicating with each other, each of those transports began to weigh anchor, and except for the click, click, click of the machinery all was silent. Precisely at 9:05, without the blast of a whistle, the sound of a gong, or the hoisting of a signal flag on the mast, but like so many automatic machines, these vessels turned their prows to the sea and began their long voyage.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I thought American arrogance was a late 20th century phenomenon. But, no. It was alive and well in 1918.It is irritatingly difficult to get through the first chapter about these troops arriving in Brest, France, as nothing and everything comes short of the American equivalent. As a war story, it is fine. If you are looking for info on the AEF, by all means, read it.

From Babylonian tablets to Google Maps, the world has evolved rapidly, along with the ways in which we see it. In this time, cartography has not only kept pace with these changes, but has often driven them. Every map tells a story and this book tells the incredible history of our world through maps, and includes many famous examples of cartography, along with some that deserve to be better known. Key maps shown include Babylonian clay tablets, c.2300 BC and c.600 BC (some of the world’s oldest surviving maps); Waldseemüller World Map, 1507 (the first map to use the name ‘America’ for the New World), Waghenaer chart, 1584 (a forerunner to modern nautical charts), Abel Buell map of North America, 1782 (the first map of the newly independent United States that was produced in America by an American), the Scramble for Africa, 1852/1898 (maps of new colonies being created); Ypres, 1918 (map of the aftermath of World War I); and Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962 (map used by President John F. Maps range in date from 1500 BC to 2014 and cover places from Babylon and Egypt to the United States and the Moon. The high resolution reproduction of the maps is impressive, and I could actually read the Gettysburg battle map and follow the battle sequence. The history behind the first map of the United States, published in 1784, was fun to read, especially the part about Benjamin Franklin.

The Curved Space Structure, designed by Peter Jon Pearce, is derived from a comprehensive study of structure in nature, with a special interest in the geometry of atomic assemblies in crystals and patterns found in biomorphic form. This study was pursued with the aim of understanding the unity of formative principles exhibited by natural structure through spatial geometry. Nature universally manifests a principle of least energy where form can be considered a diagram of forces. In a very special way, the Curved Space Structure represents a 16 billion times enlargement of the diamond crystal, enabling children, and adults, to have an immersive experience with its spatial geometry. Not only that, the details of the construction methods of this structural assembly reveal a panoply of natural patterns including curved and minimal surfaces, tessellations, polygonal geometries, and applications of material science and technology. The name Curved Space was adopted as way of characterizing the spatial experience of engaging with these remarkable structures. There is no specific reference to Einstein’s use of this term, although it certainly is implied. In June 1975 a Curved Space Structure was exhibited as part of the International Design Conference at Aspen, Colorado. This was the first public display of the Curved Space and served as a test assembly prior to the first permanent installation at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. There were three distinct structures that were installed at that museum in Brooklyn, New York, in August 1975. Unfortunately about 10 years later the museum was redesigned and the Curved Space installation was removed. One of the most important venues where a Curved Space Structure can still be found is the Hakone Open Air Museum in Japan. This amazing outdoor sculpture museum has had a Curved Space in its collection since 1978, when it was first installed. This structure was replaced and revised first in 1994 and then again in 2011. The Hakone Museum installation is largest single Curved Space Structure ever built. Although considered a work of sculpture, known as Peter Pearce’s Diamond Sculpture, it has always been the intention of the Museum that children be able to access the structure. This structure has been extremely popular with the visitors to the Museum. The origins of the Curved Space system originated with Peter Jon Pearce’s morphological research in 1965-66. This research explored natural structures as a theoretical basis for building system design. The emphasis of the this work involved the study of repeating geometric structures of the type characterized by the internal structure of crystals, as well as patterns of least energy exhibited by biomorphic structures in nature. Combining the study of minimal surfaces and repeating three-dimensional structures led to the Curved Space Structures. This work is comprehensively described in Pearce’s book, Structure in Nature is a Strategy for Design, The MIT Press, 1978, 1990. Although out of print, the book is still available from some sources.

Imagine two people having the same topological experience, but never meeting. Staggering. The whole evolution of the forms is a study in a profound vision and understanding of spatial relationships.

By Steve Diskin This book, and of course the Curved Space structure in all of its incarnations, is strikingly beautiful and wonderful to possess. As a long-time admirer of Pearce's work, I think this project is my favorite: so elegant, really, and yet so seemingly complex, powerful and tantalizing, a stellar example of modular construction that belies the efficiency of its underlying geometry. It's no wonder that it was so celebrated in Japan and works so stunningly in a natural setting! In the end, children are the ultimate judges of Curved Space. It would seem that from their point of view it is a resounding success!!! Thanks for this book, Peter and Aleta: it's gorgeous, with great photos and terrific illustrations that amply underscore the beauty of this wonderful project!

The more we understand the structure that underlies all of nature, specifically at the micro level that also enables the macro, the more sensibly we can design for the human scale. This is a wonderful book that documents the nature design at its highest order of ellegance and efficiency. A relatively brief book, albeit well illustrated, that greatly inspires. Great for all ages.
