The Savage Years: Tales From the 20th Century, by Rupert Colley

About the Author Rupert Colley was born one Christmas Day, which means, as a child, he lost out on presents. Nonetheless, looking back on it, he lived a childhood with a "silver spoon in my mouth" - brought up in a rambling manor house in the beautiful Devon countryside.  It's been downhill ever since.   He was a librarian for a long time, a noble profession. Then he started a series called History In An Hour, "history for busy people", which he sold to HarperCollins UK.    Rupert now lives in London with his wife, two children and dog (a fluffy cockapoo) and writes historical fiction, mainly 20th century war and misery.  Historical fiction with heart.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Savages. By Lisa History was a subject that I hated back in school, but I discovered in my teens and twentys that I loved historical fiction. I'm now 52, and I still dislike history books. They're so dry and mind numbingly boring. This book, I loved. Bite size chunks of history. Most of which I knew, but had forgotten the specifics, and some of which I've never known at all. I wasn't bored reading this, at all. I've even gone so far as to get Mr. Colley's book about Stalin. I pretty certain I'm going to enjoy that too! Funny, all the time that's passed in these pages, and we and our governments have learned nothing, or maybe many have chosen not to learn from the past. Yep, I'd recommend this book and author.

Ashanti Cry is a historically accurate account of slavery in the Caribbean. It tells story of five siblings who were captured from their village in Ghana, in 1807, and brought to the island of Jamaica, where they were separated from each other and sold into forced servitude. After several years, enduring the atrocities of the sugar plantation system, as fate would have it, Adisa, the main character in this story, found himself destined to cross path with the sumptuous mistress of the plantation. She was a very pretty woman, a lot younger than her husband, but who had placed her on the shelf, as he sought the beds of his young slave girls, where he supposedly found greater sexual gratification. This beautiful, sex-starved white woman soon placed Adisa in her crosshairs; he was handsome, muscular and strong, and in her eyes, was the perfect answer to the sexual frustration she had been suffering. Throwing all caution to the wind, she brought this young African into her bed, where she indulged herself lavishly in the pleasures of the flesh. This forbidden love affair was as dangerous as it was steamy, and the writing was on the wall from the very beginning; this wasn’t going to have a good ending. And just as they both should have perceived; the consequences were disastrous! But somehow, at the end of it all, after the dust had settled, the siblings were miraculously reunited, and after a spectacular chain of events, they managed to turn their fortunes around in a most remarkable way.

About the Author Although Milton G Boothe is a British certified Chartered Accountant and an IRS Enrolled Agent with many years of tax and financial accounting experience, he is also an individual who has a fervent love for creative works. Although being currently employed in private tax practices where he helps people resolve their tax problems, minimize their taxes, and routinely represents the interests of taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service; this has not served in any way to thwart his desire to create great works of fiction. So even as a tax accountant, who has written several publications on tax matters, Milton G Boothe also wears the cap of a record producer and songwriter, and has penned several novels, including “One Silly Little Mistake,” “Intricate Situations,” “Passenger of the Last Ship” and “Invisible Rainbows.”

"Alice Hoffman: Queen of Bogue Banks" is the unbelievable historical account of a too-large-for-life woman who decides to forge her own way in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hoffman’s adventure centers around a clash of cultures, a legal battle in a small Southern courthouse, and a decades’ long contention between two completely different societies: Hoffman’s high society of New York and the fishing communities of Bogue Banks, North Carolina. - How did a New York City socialite drastically change a small NC fishing village? - Why did a small Eastern North Carolina county sue President Theodore Roosevelt’s grandchildren? - How long does it take to lose freedom and a way of life? And what happens when it is lost? Kathleen Guthrie has uncovered a can’t-miss story for the ages and collected it in a well-researched account of a true American original.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Scholary, Well Researched, Informative By William D. Hooper A scholarly book, well researched and written. A story of a clash of cultures - of "gown" versus "village". A book with a larger message about what happens when divergent cultures clash and fail to find common ground. And finally, a work that gives perspective on the need for better preservation of the NC coastal environment. Specifically, on how a 21 mile long North Carolina barrier island was transformed from its near pristine state in the 1920's to the very densely summer beach haven it is today.

Gave me a deep look into Mr. Ingersoll's world, his personality, his humanity, his intellect, and his love for Nature and other living things. I am glad I read Mr. Isaac Newton Baker's "An Intimate View of Robert G. Ingersoll" before reading Mr. Ingersoll's works (Dresden Edition - Lectures). It gives a more clear understanding of this amazing, fair, loving American icon. However, it saddens me that the same narrow-mindedness we have today coming from the radical religious (and not so radical) right existed in his day. For being an agnostic, for speaking his mind, for saying what many knew but were afraid to say, he was treated like some kind of evil. Thank goodness for the intelligent freethinkers who loved and understood him. He was a gentle man, he was a fair man. And Mr. Isaac Newton Baker is to be commended for &setting the record straight. It was a great easy read. A concise and clear depiction of the true man. I recommend it.

A unique blend of characters that takes the reader on a fast-paced adventure in a world filled with mythical creatures. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Creating a world quite different from those presented in her two previous series, Cornered Magic takes readers on an adventure through both the familiar and the magical. The characters were interesting, the plot was engaging and the premise was fresh. If you're looking for a good book that blends the modern world with a hint of fantasy, this book is for you. Those who love "Once Upon a Time" or "The Tenth Kingdom" will love this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Can't wait for the next one.! By S. Smith Charissa Dufour is one of four authors that I read as soon as a book comes out. I love her characters because they are real and messy. They fall into situations that seem impossible to recover from. In this book the heroine, Sam, tries her best to keep her head down but trouble always seems to find her. That's mostly because she can't let the people she loves get hurt. Dufour's books are fast paced and heart-stopping.

What a fabulous gift for book lovers. There are 20 book posters featuring some of the literary greats from Alice in Wonderland to Anna Karenina and Grimms Fairy Tales to Wuthering Heights. There is something for everyone. Each page is perfect for framing and I wish I had my own space, I would have a wall of these. You can fit them either in 8 x 10 frames.

This book would work well as a gift to a book-loving friend. Or, if you know someone who enjoys a particular book, it would also work well for removing the lovely book-themed illustrations and framing them individually. I found many favorites of my own in there, too, including the precious children in Grimm’s Fairy Tales and the striking image of Homer’s Odyssey.
