The Savage Years: Tales From the 20th Century, by Rupert Colley

About the Author Rupert Colley was born one Christmas Day, which means, as a child, he lost out on presents. Nonetheless, looking back on it, he lived a childhood with a "silver spoon in my mouth" - brought up in a rambling manor house in the beautiful Devon countryside.  It's been downhill ever since.   He was a librarian for a long time, a noble profession. Then he started a series called History In An Hour, "history for busy people", which he sold to HarperCollins UK.    Rupert now lives in London with his wife, two children and dog (a fluffy cockapoo) and writes historical fiction, mainly 20th century war and misery.  Historical fiction with heart.

I'm now 52, and I still dislike history books. They're so dry and mind numbingly boring. This book, I loved. Bite size chunks of history. Most of which I knew, but had forgotten the specifics, and some of which I've never known at all. I wasn't bored reading this, at all. I've even gone so far as to get Mr. Colley's book about Stalin. I pretty certain I'm going to enjoy that too! Funny, all the time that's passed in these pages, and we and our governments have learned nothing, or maybe many have chosen not to learn from the past. Yep, I'd recommend this book and author.
