Though adventurers, explorers, colonizers, buccaneers, privateers and pirates are the groups best associated with exploits in the Caribbean, behind these were powerful kings and wealthy aristocrats. There were dukes, lords, mayors and barons behind these ventures. Overseas ventures and colonization were driven by an aristocracy and not by sea-fearing mariners and daring risk-takers as are common notions strewn by historic accounts. Overseas ventures were calculated investments and not random adventurism. Ventures were planned, capital was raised, agreements were reached, companies were established and leaders were contracted to conduct these missions. The powerful and the wealthy operated through sea-captains, managers and mercenaries. In effect, many who are cited as “discoverers and colonizers” were really hired hands, though several wealthy and powerful aristocrats ventured personally into the so-called New World. For example, Sir Thomas Roe, a pioneer in the settling of Virginia; was on his way to India as an emissary of King James I when he visited Tobago in 1611.

Colonisation - the stark reality By Ros This small book by the author who is born and bred in the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago and the editor of a well-respected Tobago magazine, provides a well-researched account specifically concentrating on the most aggressive war years of Tobago's history. Its narrative is lucid, which makes for easy reading. The author's perspective is starkly and succinctly clarified from the first page, detailing the misunderstanding of the interpretation of 'colonialism'. Dispelling the historic accounts and associations of explorers, buccaneers and pirates, being the main culprits of rampaging and pillaging of the Caribbean. The case in point with Tobago, being that of premeditated, systematic exploitation for mercantile gain by kings, wealthy aristocrats (dukes, lords and barons) who funded and masterminded these undertakings, as well as the usual suspects. The naval warfare between the Spanish, Dutch, French and English occurring multiple times in claims and counter claims, demonstrating the importance of this small island as a coup.A good read for those interested in history, Caribbean history and an ideal educational history book for schools, especially in Tobago. Equally it adds to what I consider an explicit deficiency of books on Caribbean history.
