In 2016 Saltcoats, a Nantucket cottage tiny in stature but large in history, celebrates its 270th birthday. James Gardner, a hatter, built the half-house, as it is known in 1746 for his bride Judith Folger. He would be dead of consumption within eighteen months but Judith and her family would continue as stewards of the property for ninety years. Judith would remarry, bear ten children and become a leader in the island's Quaker Meeting. In recognition of her leadership role in eighteenth century Nantucket as well as the publication of this house history, the Nantucket Preservation Trust awarded Saltcoats a commemorative marker.

By vicki For those of us who love islands and/or live in old houses (by the USA definition of "old"), this little gem of a book is a delight. Based on extensive research by Kate and her husband and partner, Pete, Kate recounts the history of her beloved cottage on an island rich in history with efficient and often beautiful prose.(And I use the word "efficient" in the very best sense--historical facts and details are often presented in muddled and confusing fashion by less skilled and experienced authors. Kate has edited herself beautifully in this volume). And it is filled with "just the right amount" of excellent illuminations: aerial photos and maps that provide a fascinating "picture" of Saltcoats' place in Nantucket history--and broadens the reader's understanding and appreciation for the remarkable Women of Nantucket.For those of us blessed to have spent time living for a few days, or more, in Saltcoats, Kate Stout's book is a treasure--and one of the best examples of self-published works I've seen to date.

The book is filled with love for the island and the roles of several key people over the course of that history. It comes as no surprise that the author has a home here, in concert with her devoted husband; her writing makes you feel she has lived those several hundred years on her beloved Nantucket in this tiny house. Stout brings the ambiance of Nantucket and life there alive through old maps, photos, drawings, firsthand accounts -- and her own sensitivity to the power of the past. Don't miss this lovely book.
