Shades of Blue: Writers on Depression, Suicide, and Feeling BlueFrom Seal Press

Review “Thirty-five brilliant, vivid, edgy writers in Amy Ferris’s compelling new book, Shades of Blue, unflinchingly shout out the real true down-dirty story of the blues. These compelling tales of depression aren’t depressing—they are emblazoned with hope—because every person in this book is a survivor. A survivor who doesn’t flinch from explaining exactly how they climbed out of their own personal pit of despair. How they chose life. If you’ve ever been depressed, read this book. If you’ve ever lost someone to depression, read this book. I have no doubt whatsoever that Shades of Blue will save lives—maybe even yours.”—Laura Davis, bestselling author of I Thought We’d Never Speak Again, co-author of The Courage To Heal, and founder of The Writer’s Journey"I expected this collection to pull me into a maelstrom of darkness. Instead, story after story, I found myself surfacing into the light of appreciation and hope.”—Victoria Zackheim, author, playwright, and editor of He Said What?, For Keeps, and The Other Woman"What a strong and searing light the writers in this amazing anthology shine on the thing we are so loathe to name. Depression and suicide grow in secrecy and darkness. What a feat to bathe them in understanding and humor."—Martha Frankel, author of Hats & Eyeglasses and director of The Woodstock Writers Festival“This is a brave book. No, this is a kick-ass, ‘get outta my way, despair/misery/isolation,’ ‘I'm gonna mess you up, depression’ tome. This book is a lifesaver. This book needs to go into the survivor/survival toolkit for every patient, friend, sister, husband, father, daughter, son, partner, neighbor, lover, kindergarten teacher, oncologist, nursing student, shopkeeper, artist, social worker, babysitter, the guy who fixes your car, his wife, the waitress at your favorite restaurant, your bartender, counselor. I challenge any of them, or you, or me, to feel alone with Amy Ferris's book in our pockets. This book belongs to all of us who have ever felt the pang of despair or the full blown crush of depression, or worried about someone precious who may be struggling this very very minute.”—Nina Gaby, editor of Dumped: Stories of Women Unfriending Women, and psychiatric nurse practitioner"It takes great courage to get up in the morning when depression has closed in. It also takes courage to tell the truth about what it feels like to have lost hope. These brave essayists decribe the darkness and their efforts, not always successful, to stare it down. By sharing their stories, they are making it a little easier for others to get up in the morning."—Suzanne Braun Levine, author of Inventing the Rest of Our Lives"Shades of Blue is a courageous venture into the darkness, out of which we inevitably emerge with a newfound light. There will be a point while reading this book when the words come alive with the preciousness of life. It was like being invited into someone's darkness and witnessing it in all of its devastating beauty—all its horror. It's a first-hand look into a beating heart. That sound of a heartbeat kept recurring as I read—probably my own. I felt pride and exhilaration for being alive. It was the very definition of inspiring. A tremendous gift."—Ana Surviladze, author of The Voice of a Falling Tree“You’re not alone is the grief-soaked message on every page . . . The contributors’ writing is often brilliant, and proves, at least, that depression—if confessed, illuminated, investigated, and shared—can defeat denial, and begin to help us heal.”—Mimi Kennedy, actress and author of Taken to the Stage“A ground-breaking, raw, honest new book that dives headfirst into feeling blue, depression, and suicide. Yes, even suicide. Shades of Blue must quickly become required reading in high school, in college, at church, around the family dinner table, and wherever people that care about other people gather. Shades of Blue can help us heal that which needs healing.—Tom Zuba, author of Permission to Mourn: A New Way To Do Grief

Isolation gets a few shades lighter with this brave and beautiful book By Nina Gaby As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I sit with patients and their depressions, their anxieties, their hopelessness every day. My toolkit has now expanded with the publication of Ferris's "Shades of Blue".... I can tell people about this book, I can encourage them to become a part of a larger narrative, possibly begin to more deeply explore- or possibly even write - their own stories. They can find another way to stay present in this world by reading the inspirational, stigma-busting, brave, life-affirming (no, life-saving) stories of these writers that Ferris has assembled. The crushing isolation of depression gets a few shades lighter each time someone realizes..."I'm not alone. I'm connected to a bigger picture." Thank you for this beautiful and necessary book.

I didn't count on the immediate recognition of empathy and identification with the editor Amy Ferris' introduction: 'The Balls-out Truth About Depression'. I didn't expect to be so sucked into such stories of struggle, despair, loss, renewal, irony, acceptance, hope and even amusement in one tragically absurd story of rock bottom in Samantha White's: 'The Dialectics of Suicide.' Or absolutely haunted by Jimmy Camp's: 'A Slip Of The Noose' and Jenna Stone's: 'Upon Being Told To Be True To Myself.' The order of the stories is quite perfect, ending with the attainable and sustainable hope written about in Pam L. Houston's: 'A Kind Of Quiet Most People Have Forgotten.'I read somewhere that thus book was conceived in the wake of Robin Williams' suicide, even in response to it. It's an important book that sheds much-needed light on the lingering stigma of depression, suicide, mental illness and feeling blue.

By Tom McMasters-Stone Millions of people suffer from depression, many of them undiagnosed. The beauty and scope of this book, and the value of understanding more completely what people go through, and that we don't walk through this disease alone, is invaluable. I have observed the struggles and successes of many such people and this fabulous author brings the reality of it right into your den, your living room, or your bedroom. Fabulous work!Highly recommended!!!

Update on the MacKenzie Family the will Please Fans By Sheila M "But Ian knew, without understanding how he knew, that someone who shouldn't be there was inside the house."FINAL DECISION: A welcome update on the MacKenzie family for fans of the series, this novella features Ian as an investigator -- a role he always fulfilled in the family. I loved that the story focused on the relationship between Ian and Beth and their children.THE STORY: Ian and Beth MacKenzie have been married for 10 years. Their visit at Kilmorgan Castle for his oldest brother Hart's birthday is interrupted by a burglary that Ian interrupts but not before a great portion of Hart's art collection is stolen. Ian is determined to discover who has invaded the family home. Ian is also struggling with the appearance of Beth's first husband's brother who comes to visit. Appearances by most of the family and the mystery of the art theft along with Ian's worry about his own limitations are the focus of this novella.OPINION: Great for fans of the series, this novella gives updates about the MacKenzie family but focuses on the relationship between Ian and Beth and their children. I especially loved that the story shows Ian's pride in his children and how wonderful his relationship with his own children are.The plot involves the theft of Hart's art collection and Ian's determination to track down the criminals involved. There is more to this story than a simple theft and the solution and journey to discover the criminal will be best appreciated by readers who have read the other books in the series. The story also focuses on Ian's continuous dealing with his own "madness" and his wish to be normal. I loved how this storyline developed and I think this is what moves the story into great territory. Readers of the series will know that Ian is considered "mad" (he falls somewhere on the asperger/autism scale although because the story is a historical it is not explicitly diagnosed). His madness is something that he has learned to deal with and even overcome for the sakes of his wife and children, but the chance to be normal tempts him.I think this story will be most satisfying for those who have already fallen in love with the MacKenzies. My only compliant is that I wish there had been a chance to see more of the others in the family -- or maybe we need an update novella for each couple!WORTH MENTIONING: I know that Ian and Beth are many people's favorite characters in this series, but I prefer Hart and Eleanor and I was glad that they had appearances here -- though I wished to see more of them.CONNECTED BOOKS: A MACKENZIE CLAN GATHERING is book 8.5 in the MacKenzie Family series. It should be read after at least THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE. It is really an update on the family (with a mystery that provides the plot) so it is better if the reader is familiar with the family.STAR RATING: I give this novella 4.5 stars.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Reminded me why I love this series By Jen (Red Hot Books) I have to admit that I was a little worried about whether I could love this story after The Stolen Mackenzie Bride was such a miss for me. But Jennifer Ashley brought the magic back with the Mackenzie clan we know and love. All the brothers, wives, and children are here, but this is really an Ian story –and we get the chance to see the man he has become with Beth and his children in his life. It’s been a dozen years since The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. Ian and Beth now have three children and life as a husband and father has given our hero a joy and stability he had never believed possible. Beth is still his salvation and his world, but their children have widened the bubble of domestic happiness to include them as well. The thing is… Ian is still Ian. The autism or Aspergers he has still exists; he just has learned coping mechanisms that make life better.Anyway, the Mackenzie clan is on the cusp of a big gathering for Hart’s birthday at Kilmorgan Castle. Only Ian’s family is there so far when thieves break in and plunder Hart’s art collection. Ian sets out to solve the crime with Inspector Fellows. But his plans get a bit complicated when Beth’s former brother-in-law Ackerley shows up for a visit. He is fascinated by Ian and convinced he can cure the madness that has plagued him for so long. Of course, Ian wants to be normal for his family, but the question is… can anyone really help him? The story follows Ian as he uses his keen mind to root out his enemies and faces off with the parts of himself that make him so different.I enjoyed going back inside Ian’s head. It’s also really great to get a peek after the Happy Ever After. Finding the love of your life fixes many things, but not everything. I like that Ian really struggles with questions about his madness, and I really enjoyed being with him as he reflected on his life as he got to this point. Ackerley was an interesting character, too. I honestly didn’t know what to make of him for most of the book. It was cool that his motivations were not obvious and I liked the way it all unfolded. The big bad was kind of silly to me. But it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story at all. Because that mystery wasn’t what made the book good. That was Ian… and his Beth. Together, they reminded me why I loved this series so much. I see a great future hero in their son, Jamie, too. Fans of the Mackenzies will definitely enjoy this one too. Great characters and a love story that stands the test of time. Plus, appearances from all the rest of the clan we’ve loved throughout the years.Rating: B/B+

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Just didn't work for me By DiDi GPBR A Mackenzie Clan Gathering has many different characters and twist in the plot. It was a novel that had potential but it did not hold my interest. There were a lot of characters introduced and a lot of different ideas coming together in this novel. Sometimes it was a bit much, I had a very hard time relating to any of the characters and or following the story line. I could definitely feel the heat and attraction between Ian and Beth, along with the depth of love Ian had for his children. However I could not connect with the secondary characters, and there were a bunch of characters that I didn’t really feel needed and introduction. I liked to see Ian and Beth and how they interacted with their family, and how calming Beth was to Ian. I do see that in many relationships that one can help calm, center and focus the other partner, and she did that very well in this novel. I didn’t understand the urge to help fix parts of Ian; it added a lot of confusion to the story line. Were we reading about a gathering or a therapy session? Overall it was a struggle to keep reading, I had to force myself to stay with this book and not start another.Review copy provided for an honest review.

Murder and dark deeds shadowed the extravagance of the Gilded Age in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. In the summer of 1893, a tall and well-dressed burglar plundered the massive summer mansions of the upper crust. A visit from President Teddy Roosevelt in 1902 ended in tragedy when a trolley car smashed into the presidential carriage, killing a Secret Service agent. Shocking the nation, a psychotic millworker opened fire on a packed streetcar, leaving three dead and five wounded. From axe murders to botched bank jobs, author Andrew Amelinckx dredges up the forgotten underbelly of the Berkshires with unforgettable stories of greed, jealousy and madness from the Gilded Age.

The Whiteness of the Whale brings together Paul Graham's three bodies of American photographs: American Night, a shimmer of possibility and The Present, made from 1998 to 2011. These 3 remarkable photographic series reflect upon the social fabric of contemporary America, whilst trying to find something closer to the experience of being and seeing in the world today. American Night (2003) examines the social fracture of America - the great divide between have and have-not rendered through the dichotomy of light and darkness, presence and absence. The images oscillate between high-key near invisible photographs in bright light, and the antithesis - deeply saturated colour images of freshly minted homes glowing under California's blue skies. a shimmer of possibility (2007), is an American epic of the small and incidental. Originally published as twelve photographic visions of everyday life, the stuttering sequences form a kind of 'filmic haiku', revealing the flow of life found in quotidian America, where we share moments with people waiting for a bus, cutting the grass, or smoking a cigarette. a shimmer of possibility was winner of the 2011 Paris Photo Book Prize for the most significant Photobook of the past 15 years. The Present (2011) taken in the streets of New York, and unfolds two images of the same scene separated only by the briefest fraction of time. Here the present is revealed to be a fleeting and provisional alignment, glimpsed as part of an ever flowing continuum of life: before/after, coming/going, either/or. The luxurious catalogue is printed in wide gamut inks on natural white paper, and coincides with the first solo exhibition at Pier 24, San Francisco. It includes newly commissioned texts by David Chandler and Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa.

By nerose Great book by Paul Graham and Mack books, in a lovely red cardboard protective box, published to coincide with a one person exhibition at Pier 24, S.F. This brings together his 3 bodies of work on the United States over the past 15 years. I can't think of anyone who has done more to reinvigorate photographic language than Mr Graham during this time. 'A Shimmer of Possibility' is his masterpiece, and is right up there with the very best of photographic works. Sadly, that (12 volume) book sold out a long time ago, but this is a chance to own this work, plus his New York street photographs 'The Present' along with the early work about the invisible poor of America, 'American Night', for those who missed it. Mr Graham 's work appeals to me, as it's made out in the world, with real people and life as it arrives. I think most people fall in love with photography want to work this way, but it's surprisingly hard, hence the fad for employing actors, 'staging' situations, and manipulating the final results in Photoshop. Tiresome. This is a lot to claim, but collectively, these 3 bodies of photographs are probably the first truly great body of photographic work of the 21st century.

Cleveland loves its craft beer. The city's breweries are flourishing under a period of brewing renewal and an insatiable taste for quality local craftsmanship. But Cleveland's brewing industry hasn't always enjoyed such prosperous times. The industry boomed during the 1800s only to see Prohibition, dwindling demand and increased competition stifle production. Each brewery, one by one, closed its doors until none remained. In 1988, Patrick and Daniel Conway opened the fledgling Great Lakes Brewing Company, and the industry was born anew. Today, local visionaries are engineering the comeback and bringing national attention to Cleveland's award-winning craft brews. Authors Leslie Basalla and Peter Chakerian chart the remarkable history of the ups and downs of Cleveland beer.
