The war in the South Pacific saw some of the most gruelling fighting of World War Two. Conditions were unpleasant - fetid heat, torrential downpours and hostile flora and fauna - while the Japanese enemy were ruthless and would often fight to the last man. Amphibious warfare, jungle warfare and the need to co-operate with their American allies all meant that extra demands were made on New Zealand soldiers.

Yet the war in the South Pacific came to be perceived as an easy war and, with the exception of Guadalcanal, was generally overlooked by historians. From ignorance of what the soldiers were called upon to endure, the notion arose that service in the South Pacific was somehow less worthy than the 'real war' in Europe against the Nazis. This attitude continued in the postwar world, and today the soldiers of 3NZ Division are all but forgotten.

Pacific Star sets the record straight, shedding new light on the sacrifices and tribulations which the soldiers of 3NZ Division had to endure in the service of the Allied cause. The book covers their initial deployment in Fiji and New Caledonia and describes the major battles the division fought in the Solomons - Vella Lavella, the Treasury Islands and the Green Islands - as well as their sometimes strained relationship with the US military. Reg Newell has interviewed veterans for this important book, which includes new maps and previously unpublished photographs.

Well written, good illustrations and clear maps. A pity that more military history is not as easily readable as this.

There is a dearth of material about 3NZ Div so this, along with a volume on Operation Goodtime, makes a welcome appearance. The only comment I'd make is that a few personal recollections of duty, both garrison and combat, would have been an excellent addition!!Many thanks to the author for putting this most readable history together... kudos!!

A mere handful of battlefields have come to epitomize the anguish and pain of America's Civil War: Gettysburg, Shiloh, Chancellorsville, Chickamauga. Yet another name belongs on that infamous list: Stones River, the setting for Peter Cozzens's No Better Place to Die. It was here that both the Union and Confederate armies lost over one-quarter of their forces in battle casualties. The Confederacy's defeat at Stones River unleashed a wave of dissension that crippled the army's high command and ultimately closed Tennessee to the South for two years. The loss deterred the British and French from coming to the aid of the South in the Civil War, with tragic effects for the Southern cause. In the 126 years since the guns fell silent at Stones River, few books have examined the bloody clash and its impact on the war's subsequent outcome. No Better Place to Die recounts the events and strategies that brought the two armies to the banks of this central Tennessee river on December 31, 1862. Cozzens re-creates the battle itself, following the movements and performance of individual regiments. A series of maps clarifies the combat activity. Cozzens frequently lets the men who fought the battle speak for themselves, through letters, diaries, memoirs, and battlefield communications. Here we learn about such critical moments as General Philip Sheridan's gallant defense along the Wilkinson Pike, one of the war's most tenacious stands against overwhelming odds, and the bravery in battle exemplified by Brekenridge's attack on the Union left, a doomed assault with the poignancy of Pickett's charge. Over twenty thousand Union and Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured in the bloody New Year's battle of Stone's River. The impact of their struggle extended far beyond the thousands of shattered human lives, ultimately imperiling the fortunes of the Confederacy. No Better Place to Die pays tribute to the heroes, the scoundrels, the mistakes, the bravery, and the grief at Stone's River.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Detailed study of a crucial yet neglected battle By Theo Logos Few major battles of the Civil War have been more neglected than Stones River. It was among the bloodiest battles of the war, and started a ripple effect that would end with the defeat of the South, yet there are less than half a dozen books on it, and only the most devoted students of the war know much of anything about it. Peter Cozzens' book, `No Better Place to Die', is perhaps the best single book detailing and explaining the significance of this nearly forgotten battle.December of 1862 had been a very bad month for the Union. General Burnsides and the Army of the Potomac had been horribly defeated at the Battle of Fredericksburg, and Grant and Sherman had been stopped cold in their attempt to take Vicksburg. The Union badly needed a victory, and another defeat could have been disastrous. Stones River was fought between the Union's Army of the Cumberland and the Confederate's Army of Tennessee over three days; from New Years Eve 1862 till January 2, 1863. Though the battle was considered by many to be a tactical draw, and both sides claimed victory, General Bragg and his Army of Tennessee retreated, conceding middle Tennessee to The Army of the Cumberland and the Union, and setting the stage for opening up the back door to the heart of the Confederacy. Though many today have forgotten the significance of this battle, its importance was not lost on President Lincoln, who after the battle wrote to General Rosecrans, commander of the Union forces at Stones River, "I can never forget whilst I remember anything, that... you gave us a hard-earned victory, which had there been a defeat instead, the Nation could scarcely have lived over."Cozzens is no great wordsmith, but his research is meticulous and his detail is exacting. `No Better Place to Die' is not so dry as the previous book of his that I have read, perhaps because though detailed, it is still a short book (just over 200 pages), and because he uses many interesting quotes from participants in the battle that add the color that his own words lack. It is, in my opinion, the best, clearest, and most detailed book on this important battle, and anyone who wants to seriously study the Civil War and understand how it was won in the western theater can ill afford to miss it.Theo Logos

His narrative of troop movements, supplemented by sketches of unit locations throughout the two days' fighting, make it easy for the reader to follow the flow of action. Cozzens tells the story of Stones River through the eyes and words of the participants, drawing extensively on soldiers'memoirs. To set the stage, he describes how the Kentucky campaign and Bragg's defeat at Perryville affected the preparation and strategy at Stones River. Generals Bragg and Rosecrans are profiled, and how their personalities and relations with their subordinate commanders affected the outcome of the battle. Cozzens wraps things up by analyzing how the results of Stones River affected public opinion in both North and South. An excellent treatment of a long-neglected battle.

26 of 30 people found the following review helpful. No Punch, No Verve. By Michael E. Fitzgerald This is a very complete, very detailed account of the Battle of Stones River but it lacks the intensity of other works by Peter Cozzens. As a result, I was disappointed with the narrative. However, it is a good work, deserving of your time.Fought by two mediocre generals, Braxton Bragg and William S. Rosecrans, this engagement was intense and ugly. As the 24,000 casualties indicate, once begun, there was little strategy involved. The opposing armies simply mauled each other. As mention in my review of Stones River by James Lee McDonough, this was the first major battle in the Union's plan to seize the Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta corridor. Claimed by many to be a tactical draw, it was a Southern defeat of the worst sort. The South lost control of an invaluable asset, middle Tennessee's railroads. It is from this spring board that Union armies once again sliced the Confederacy in two.If you are a Peter Cozzens fan as I am, know ahead of time that this is not Peter Cozzens at his best.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. BEAUTIFUL! By Elizabeth Elle This book is beautiful! I love these stunning illustrations. This book includes 20 hand-drawn cards with various sayings and illustrations on them. They are easily torn out if the book- so many of these types of books have cards that are almost impossible to tear out, but not this book! I have not ripped one on accident in this entire book. These cards are easy to color with colored pencils, or thick enough to use markers on. The fronts of these cards contain the beautiful lettering and designs, and the backsides of the cards contain blank spots for writing, framed in a simple but lovely design.I have used these cards in a few different ways. I always color them (again, using colored pencils or markers) and then tear them out. I have used a few of these as cards for friends. These cards contain birthday messages, congrats, or thank yous, but mostly some beautiful affirmations such as the title, don’t quit your daydream! Besides using these as cards for my friends, I like to use these when I scrapbook or in my planner. I simply hole punch these cards and insert it as a divider, or I’ll put it in my pocket scrapbook! These make wonderful decorations as well. Seriously, stunning art!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Be free and dream By AwesomeBEA Coloring is fun. Anyone says different is wrong. This book is filled with interesting designs and fun fonts to color and bring to life. What I like most is all the blank, framed pages where I can let my imagination soar. As much as I like coloring, what I like even more is sharing that joy to others. The pages are easily removed and I sat around with a couple of my friends to color. We gave each other a theme and just went with it. It was a great way to be creative. Afterwards we just talked about our pictures, art and everything in between. Crazy that a coloring book can do all that, but it can . It can be anything you make it.Now, I don't expect anyone else to have such an experience, but it's nice to enjoy coloring for what it is: a fun activity to pass the time. Although, I do think a couple of pieces came out nice enough that I will give them away as personalized cards for birthdays. Note: It is a good idea to use colored pencils with this book. A lot of the designs are smaller and it's easier to navigate with a colored pencil over a crayon.

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.
