I enjoy it because, unlike photography, the subject is selective, focused on one part of, say a plant, and sees the environment much like I do. Yes, I'm an artist too. I enjoy this book. Great delivery service. It came quickly.

The words of a true prophet By Guardian of the Scales It will strike the reflective mind with some surprise that this classic piece of Victorian sagacity from the year 1850, a milestone in socio-moral analysis, is not better known to the modern reader. Carlyle was the last great prophet of the Western tradition, who looked at the atheistic, money-grabbing, materialistic society around him, enthralled to such cants as utilitarianism and other materialist philosophies, and felt himself compelled to protest in the strongest possible terms about the moral dung-heap the world had become. He called for a complete overhaul of the system of government - of democracy he had seen quite enough. Democracy does not cause the wisest to be given power, but the talking-machine, the man dedicated not to wisdom but to the sham of wisdom, to all the arts of popularity and stump-oratory. Better far to cultivate the greatest virtue, Silence. The Talker is insincere, much given to cant and flummery. He has departed from the Eternal Laws of the Universe, and so has the society which has produced him, and of which he is the emblem.Carlyle called for the Organization of Labour, so in some respects one could perhaps call him a socialist, and, indeed, earlier works by Carlyle were favourably reviewed by Engels. Where Carlye differed from socialism was in that this organization was to be under the control of the wisest or ablest men, who were to reign tyranically, but with God's justice in their hearts. This was especially urgently required in the light of the Europe-wide revolutions of 1848. This year was not a glorious one in European history, said Mr C - quite the contrary, indeed! As he wrote on the first Pamphlet that makes up this collection, called "The Modern Age":[W]e had the year 1848, one of the most singular, disastrous, amazing, and, on the whole, humiliating years the European world ever saw. Not since the irruption of the Northern Barbarians has there been the like. Everywhere immeasurable Democracy rose monstrous, loud, blatant, inarticulate as the voice of Chaos. Everywhere the Official holy-of-holies was scandalously laid bare to dogs and the profaneQuite so. Alas that this benighted age has not its own Thomas Carlyle to declaim such great truths from on high. Not only that, but we neglect even to read the man himself, as though his prophecies did not hold good for our own age! This foolishness must end, as an offense against the Eternal Verities of the Universe. There is only one Sage, and this is he, fittingly reverenced by many in his own time (Charles Dickens for example called him "the man who knows everything", and also said "I would go farther to see Carlyle than any man living". His Hard Times is also inscribed "To Thomas Carlyle"), shamefully neglected in ours - I say shamefully, yet also dangerously, catastrophically, for his lessons are the lessons of the universe, if we could but read it aright. He, taking up where his hero Goethe left off, read the open secret of the universe, and set it down for us - find a wiser than thee, and reverence him, for he is wise, and thou art a blockhead. In this we have the essence of Carlyle, and let us not forget it.This edition has only the first 5 of the 8 pamphlets that Carlyle issued monthly during 1850. This incompleteness seems to be common to many editions, for reasons I'm unsure of. It's not easy to get all 8. On original publication, the Latter-Day Pamphlets met with some disfavour; his biographer Froude said they caused "universal offence". Yet some there were to hear their message, and Carlyle's reputation survived this offence. To our day, they are still more relevant, for what does our age lack more than Obedience, the first of all virtues? As Carlyle said elsewhere, "[A]ll men, and especially all women, are born worshippers, and will worship, if it be but possible." Consider this well, O foolish Reader, till the meaning of it begins to make itself felt, even to thy poor, faithless head.

Lobsters and lunacy: The zaniest Surrealist of them all   Painter, sculptor, writer, film-maker, and all-round showman Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) was one of the twentieth century’s greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics. One of the first artists to apply the insights of Freudian psychoanalysis to art, he is celebrated in particular for his surrealist practice, with such conceits as the soft watches or the lobster telephone, now hallmarks of the surrealist enterprise, and of modernism in general.Dalí frequently described his paintings as “hand-painted dream photographs.” Their tantalizing tension and interest resides in the precise rendering of bizarre elements and incongruous arrangements. As Dalí himself explained, he painted with “the most imperialist fury of precision,” but only “to systematize confusion and thus to help discredit completely the world of reality.”Revolutionizing the role of the artist, the mustache-twirling Dalí also had the intuition to parade a controversial persona in the public arena and, through printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, and film, to create work that could be consumed and not just contemplated on a gallery wall. This book explores both the painting and the personality of Dalí, introducing his technical skill as well as his provocative compositions and challenging themes of death, decay, and eroticism.   About the Series:Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Art series features:

  • a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance
  • a concise biography
  • approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

Not quite surreal By Floccinaucinihilipilification This is a small coffee table book with a good collection of Dali's artworks. The text is provides a basic, superficial overview of Dali's life and art. Neret's extensive use of extended quotes in the place of actually authoring content can be annoying.Overall, an acceptable introduction to Dali with a good timeline of his life and work at the end. Buy the book for its art, not its text content.

Review “Published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the World Monuments Fund, World Monuments is a lavish new coffee table book that highlights 50 historic sites alongside compelling essays by eight experts...from Angkor to Yaxchilan. Each chapter begins with an essay by a leading scholar. John Julius Norwich covers the effects of natural catastrophe and climate change on Venice while Anne Applebaum uses the remaining Jewish synagogues in Krakow as a framework for discussing intentional damage at the hands of war and human conflict. Other essays by luminaries including William Dalrymple and Andre Aciman address additional concerns by focusing on sites in Rome, Cairo, Agra, Cusco, Mexico City and Beijing. World Monuments complements the thoughtful essays with informative summaries and splendid photographs that get at the heart of each historic site. While the book’s primary focus is on the importance of historic preservation efforts, it also inspires as a ‘bucket list’ for the educated traveler—armchair or otherwise.” --Longitude, Recommended Reading for Travelers"No mere coffee table book, [World Monument's] pages are filled with though-provoking essays by some of the world's prominent writers . . . In essence, the book is an armchair bucket list for the educated traveler. From Petra to new Orleans and Angkor to the Tempel Synagogue in Krakow, the Mughal Gardens of Agra, India to the Changellerie d'Orleans in Paris, it offers 50 of the world's more compelling destinations, cultural heritage sites and significant architectural works." -ARCHITECTS & ARTISANS

About the Author World Monuments Fund is the world’s premier nongovernmental organization that protects against the loss of the world’s architectural and cultural heritage, comprising the built environment, the artworks that embellish it, and the cultural traditions that it sustains. Incredible book and important cause By JO Reynolds This is a very important book, especially in light of what is happening in the world right now. 50 sites, eight essays by some of our time's finest minds, and striking images from renowned photographers. It is a call to save the treasures of the world and to visit them while you still can. Well done.

By Mike O'Connor WORLD MONUMENTS, 50 IRREPLACEABLE SITES TO DISCOVER, EXPLORE AND CHAMPION is a triple-threat book. It interweaves concise histories of many of the world's most beautiful sites with information on preservation efforts directed at those same sites and illustrates all that with marvelous color and b&w photographs of such delights as the Taj Mahal, Stowe House, Brancusi's Endless Column, the Petra Archaeological Site and the Chancellerie D'Orleans. A 2015 Rizzoli release, the book is a breathtaking, informative and compelling look at the current state of our earth's cultural heritage. The book is divided into eight chapters, each with a different theme. The 'War and Human Conflict' chapter, for example, describes the impact that conflict has had on such sites as Coventry Cathedral in England, Cambodia's Angkor Park and Krakow's Tempel Synagogue. The 'Natural Catastrophe and Climate Change' chapter, likewise, summarizes the natural dangers posed to Venice, the Petra Site and New Orleans neighborhoods. The 'Vigilance and Reinvigoration of Threatened Landmarks' chapter discusses Easter Island, St. Georges' Bloomsbury Church and Austria's Belvedere Gardens and so on. The essays are thoughtful and, at turns, uplifting and depressing. The book is illustrated throughout with wonderful color and b&w photographs of these marvels and other treasures like the Great Wall of China, Luxor Temple, Machiya townhouses and Manchester's St. Francis Cathedral. Visually, the book is a delight.WORLD MONUMENTS was written in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the World Monuments Fund, a key player in heritage site preservation. The book offers a compelling and wonderfully-illustrated 'report card' on the earth's cultural heritage not to be missed by all those concerned about the wonders of our world. Recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good story. By Snowbunny1977 Awww I loved Phoebe. I think I enjoyed her more than Vidalia. However, in this story there isn't any yummy smexy times which was a little disappointing. There was a kiss or 2 but that was it. Bummer right? LOL. This was definitely a really unique story and I very much enjoyed it. I love Jax...he was so awesome and cute. Her best friend since kids. They were foster kids together and he's a reitred marine. He's always had her back and she calls him her brother. So sweet! They made me laugh. I wasn't sure what to think of Grant. I didnt like him at first cause I didnt know his motives and neither did Jax or Phoebs. In his defense he couldnt necessarily tell her anything until she was questioned and interviewed by the Magistrate. Wow...what a weird and evil step sister. Now....one thing I didnt get and I dunno if anyone else caught it. Her Step-sister Helen was 28, 3 years older than Phoebe but she had Phoebe's mom put to death 25 years ago? Uhhh she was 3 right? So, that didnt make sense to me. Maybe I read it wrong or maybe they age differently...who knows but that didnt mesh with me. The insta love was really fast with Grant. Kinda freaked her out and she panicked a little til she calmed down. I love her....she was hilarious. Loved that he was a kitty...err....King Lion anyways. :)

Give her any challenge and she'll meet it head on. Since she just past the Bar exam its time for her to decide what to do with her life. Then a hot muscle bound lawyer steps in her path and changes her life forever . Thrown head first into a wild adventure and dragging her poor best friend along for the ride, will they survive all the trials and plots that are thrown in their path. Will she be able to finally learn where she came from and why she was abandoned all those years ago. Or will she run away back to the safety and comfort of home. This is truly an awesome new adventure.

By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Phoebe: A 'Not-Quite Phoenix Love StorySeries: The 'Not Quite' Love Story SeriesDesignation: Book Two, Stand-alone short story, NO CliffhangerAuthor: Julia MillsReading Platform: Kindle UnlimitedMy Rating: FIVE FLAMING HOT STARS*****Wow! Julia Mills has knocked it out of the park - again with Phoebe: A 'Not-Quite Love Story, the second release in her new lighthearted, fun-filled 'Not-Quite' Love Story Series. I absolutely love it! These are just the cutest little stories ever! I became a loyal reader and Julia Mills fan last year after reading the first book in her best-selling Dragon Guard Series and now 10 releases later, I'm still a die-hard fan. All of her stories are exceptional but this fast-paced, fun-filled, laugh-out-loud funny, supernatural romantic comedy is absolutely extraordinary. The story has everything you need to make a great read. Like what, you ask? Well, it has excitement, suspense, danger, drama, adventure, lots and lots of snark, sass and humor, and this one even has some action as well. Oh, and did I mention romance? Oh yes, it has that too, in spades. It's well crafted, well written and well edited. The narrative is written in the first person from the point of view of the female protagonist. Always a big plus in my book. The characters are well developed, engaging, endearing and will steal your heart. What girl doesn't dream of being a princess, right??? Or about being a princess of a clan of bird shifters on a Greek island??? Maybe not so much! Sound far-fetched? Not for Phoebe O'Byrne who has just passed her bar exam. So, what's a girl do when she's approached by a mysterious and very handsome attorney named Grant A Hollingsworth who tells her she has a half sister and needs to travel to Greece to claim her birthright. Birthright? Wait - what? She was abandoned as an infant and left on a park bench because no one wanted her. So, what birthright and family could she possibly have? Well, I guess she'll just have to make the trip to find out, and of course she'll take Jax, her retired Marine foster brother along for the ride as well. No spoilers from me but I will say this.....Beautiful, curvaceous new attorney who may possibly be 'not-quite' a phoenix-check! Oh snap! Handsome, hot attorney who just also happens to be a lion shifter and falls heads over tails for Phoebe-check! A loyal foster brother-check! An evil power-hungry half sister-check! Danger, drama, adventure and evil machinations-check! Heated attraction, sweet romance and a fairytale happy ending fit for a princess-you bet! That and a whole lot more! A deliciously cute and delightfully entertaining, can't-put-down read! These are all humorous, quick, fast-paced standalone short stories with a beautiful, sassy heroine and each comes complete with its very own happily-ever-after ending. What didn't I love about this story? Not a darn thing!

In calling for the regions separation from Mecklenburg County in 1792, John Pioneer Paul Barringer set a high-spirited standard for future legendary locals of the nascent Cabarrus County. New communities flourished on the former homesteads of Robert Harris and Paul M. Dayvault, and the county was subsequently transformed by devoted civic leaders such as John Washington Carriker, Jonas Cook, A.L. Brown, J. Carlyle Rutledge, Martha Melvin, and Allen T. and Ella Mae Small. Cabarrus County citizens, like Glenn McDuffie, the famous kissing soldier of World War II; Corine Cannon, the first African American woman to work in the textile mills; and Margaret Hagerty, the Guinness World Recordsholding senior citizen marathon runner, often tread where others recoil. Kannapolis-born Ralph Earnhardt started a racing dynasty here, while other natives found their fortunes elsewhere, including record producer Marshall Sehorn, NFL superstar Natrone Means, and broadcaster Beth Troutman. Cabarrus Countys people have always been its most valuable resource, and their inspirational and exhilarating stories are collected in this keepsake edition.

Cabarrus county( NC) is rich with history, I'm a transplant and I have learned more about this area I now call home. Much of that is due his books and attention to detail. This book does not disappoint. It is chock-full of photos, stories, and interesting historical information. This would make a great gift for anybody and I would recommend his other books as well.
