Glossy magazines write about them, celebrities give their names to them, and you’d better believe there’s an app (or ten) committed to finding you the right one. They are New York City restaurants and food shops. And their journey to international notoriety is a captivating one. The now-booming food capital was once a small seaport city, home to a mere six municipal food markets that were stocked by farmers, fishermen, and hunters who lived in the area. By 1890, however, the city’s population had grown to more than one million, and residents could dine in thousands of restaurants with a greater abundance and variety of options than any other place in the United States. Historians, sociologists, and foodies alike will devour the story of the origins of New York City’s food industry in Urban Appetites. Cindy R. Lobel focuses on the rise of New York as both a metropolis and a food capital, opening a new window onto the intersection of the cultural, social, political, and economic transformations of the nineteenth century. She offers wonderfully detailed accounts of public markets and private food shops; basement restaurants and immigrant diners serving favorites from the old country; cake and coffee shops; and high-end, French-inspired eating houses made for being seen in society as much as for dining.  But as the food and the population became increasingly cosmopolitan, corruption, contamination, and undeniably inequitable conditions escalated. Urban Appetites serves up a complete picture of the evolution of the city, its politics, and its foodways.

Urban Appetites: Food and Culture in Nineteenth-Century New York (Historical Studies of Urban America), by Cindy R. Lobel

Review “[O]ne snapshot of New York in a century that brought enormous changes in eating and food production…. Through the lens of food, the book surveys changes in the culture, demographics and politics of the city.” (New York Times)“Lobel uncovers the 19th-century roots of New York City’s claim to be the food capital of the world and its implications of diversity, abundance, and exoticism associated with the rising urban US. . . . The book's best sections cover the growing cultural expectations of urban restaurants in the rise of public culture that serviced specialized clienteles. Recommended.” (Choice)“Lobel’s fine book leads us on a fascinating tour of New York’s foodways past, letting us explore the farms and markets that supplied kitchens in the city’s homes and restaurants and introducing us to men and women who raised food, sold it, cooked it, and ate it.” (Ann Fabian, author of The Skull Collectors: Race, Science, and America’s Unburied Dead)“Lobel's accessible cultural history takes us on a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of New York's food system, covering everything from the provisioning of family kitchens to the emergence of the greatest restaurant scene in the world. Scholars and policymakers have recently recognized that food systems are a key to cultural and environmental sustainability, making this is an ideal time for Lobel's much-needed primer on the historic context for this essential human question. This is a must-read for all who hunger for a better understanding of how cities really work.” (Owen Gutfreund Hunter College, City University of New York)"New York's roots as the world's greatest culinary center are firmly cemented in Cindy Lobel's wonderful survey of the dazzling dining options of the nineteenth century. Her descriptions of markets, dining rooms, restaurants, and kitchens tell us not only what people ate but where they dined and how the city's rich ethnic diversity influenced it all." (Lisa Keller Purchase College, State University of New York)“A compelling story. . . . Lobel has written an engaging book about a fascinating subject, and it deserves to be widely read by food historians, New Yorkers, and anyone with an interest in how urban culture has historically shaped food distribution networks.” (Journal of the Early Republic)

About the Author Cindy R. Lobel is assistant professor of history at Lehman College.

The author did well with the action scene and portrayed a strong courageous heroine. There were numerous errors through out including pronoun discrepancies, punctuation, etc. that demonstrated a lack of editing. There needed to be more backstory for the main characters as well as more world building regarding the park, shifters, etc.Overall I did like this and will read more of the series. This author shows potential.

I so love standalone series. It is exciting getting to know the personalities of the characters and their back stories. The characters are powerful, sultry, their personas unique, and full of unexpected surprises. This story focuses on; Alex, a strapping, heart-stirring handsome bear-shifter and Alpha to the Glowstone Guardians; Susan, a curvaceous, bold, intelligent human beauty, and research assistant. What you'll find in this story; a remarkably cast of impressive and engaging characters, fantastic story-line, picturesque and dynamic vivid scene descriptions, phenomenal banter, gripping suspense, pent-up rage, action packed, gut-wrenching moments, camaraderie, earth-shattering toe-curling sensual romance, and a magnificent conclusion leaving you content and wanting more.Alex and his clan are protectors of the Glowstone Park. Poachers have been killing the elk that roam the forest free. Susan, a GIS tech has been sent by her boss Dr. Handley to track the elk, as his research is in danger due to their deaths. When Alex learns Susan is his fated mate, convincing her presents a challenge. Horrific danger lurks in the shadows of the park and it is after the shifters, and anything else that stands in the way.WOW/SPECTACULAR-fast paced well written creative read by a truly gifted author. The characters come alive with fantastic dialogue, thrilling action, and breathtaking scene descriptions that keeps you hooked from start to finish. The romance sizzles to a slow passionate burn, and Alex’s devotion to Susan shines like a beacon. Susan’s lion-hearted persona make her a most valiant heroine. You can’t help but love and cheer for the awesome characters in this story. This was a most exhilarating read and I loved it. I look forward to reading the next book in this exciting series. If you treasure shifter romance this is certainly a terrific book for your library. In the world of shifter romance the possibilities are endless and always fascinating. Usually I can tell where the story is going about midway through. The romance was nicely done, but the action was sublime. All I thought was "you go girl and Damon Ren". Can't wait to see whose story is next. Thank you J.H. for such a good book!

The Peter Pan of English monarchy Edward VI, the only son of Henry VIII, became king at the age of nine and died wholly unexpectedly at the age of 15. All around him loomed powerful men who hoped to use the child to further their own ends, but who were also playing a long game—assuming that Edward would long outlive them and become as commanding a figure as his father had been. Stephen Alford's wonderful book gives full play to the murky, sinister nature of Edward's reign, but is also a poignant account of a boy learning to rule, to enjoy his growing power, and to come out of the shadows of the great aristocrats around him. England's last child monarch, Edward would have led his country in a quite different direction to the catastrophic one caused by his death.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Edward VI reign had an enduring impact on the English Reformation By Susman .Thomas Penn and a number of his colleagues have embarked on a venture to publish a short series of profiles of England's and eventually Britain's Monarchs. The aim being that the reader will think afresh about the Monarchs - their place in history and the continued significance of this national institution.Edward VI (12 October 1537 - 6 July 1553) was King of England and the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, he was the third sovereign of the Tudor house and England's first monarch raised as a Protestant. During Edward's sovereignty, the kingdom was administered by a Regency Council, as he never reached maturity. His reign was marked by economic difficulties and communal turbulence that, in 1549 manifested into insurrection and rebellion. It was during Edward's reign that Protestantism was recognised for the first time in England. There were reforms that included the culmination of clerical celibacy and the Mass and the obligation of obligatory services in English from the previously prescribed Latin. The main architect of these fundamental restructurings was Thomas Cranmer, who was Archbishop of Canterbury. Thomas Cranmer also created the Book of Common Prayer that is still in use today. Edward ruled for only six years and died at the age of 15, his sovereignty made an enduring impact to the English Reformation and the structure of the Church of England. This book is a fine academic edition, with good attention to detail , which is probably aimed at the younger reader - but not exclusively so. It's a small hardback book with just under 100 pages of the main text in small font sized print. The cover dust jacket covers the centre half of the book, which makes it, look rather fetching. It has a number of lavish colour plates at centre of the book, it's attractively bound and paper is of good quality. There is a useful section of notes as well as guide for further reading. The book is written in a clear and concise manner and can be considered a good primer on the subject of Edward VI short, but event filled reign. This edition is the first of 5 initial books to be published this Dec 2014, is part of a series of narratives under the collective banner of `Penguin Monarchs'...

The story of 50 men hand-picked by Churchill to form a secret army that attacked, kidnapped, ambushed, and killed Germans across Europe during WW2 They were Britain’s own Second World War "Band of Brothers": a privately selected secret army of 50 cross-channel raiders who formed the elite Small Scale Raiding Force. Part SOE, part Combined Operations, their full story of courage, audacity, and ultimate tragedy has never been told before. Created after the fall of Dunkirk, the raiders were much admired, especially by Churchill. In almost twenty daring missions over two years they kidnapped sentries, ambushed patrols, and shot prisoners—wreaking havoc along the rim of Hitler’s Festung Europa. One night, they landed in a secret armed reconnaissance mission at what would become Omaha Beach and ran into a German patrol; with nowhere to hide but the sea, they were gunned down. Those left behind continued their extraordinary legacy, told here for the first time by Tom Keene

Worshiped for over three-fifths of recorded history, ancient Egypt's Gods and Goddesses are among the most fascinating of human civilization. The lives of pharaohs and commoners alike were dominated by the need to honor, worship, and pacify the huge pantheon of deities. From lavish tomb paintings and imposing temple reliefs to humble household shrines, countless tributes throughout Egypt reflect the richness and complexity of their mythology. This book examines the Egyptian gods and goddesses - from minor household figures such as Bes and Taweret to the all-powerful deities Amun and Rethat made Egypt the most completely theocratic society of the ancient world, and made Egyptians, according to Herodotus, "more religious than any other people." Ancient Egypt has held humanity in its thrall for over 5000 years. The image of the Great Pyramids of the Valley of the Kings rising ghostlike from the white sands of the Sahara Desert is synonymous with the mysteries of the Ancient World. Ancient Egypt was remarkably advanced, especially considering its origins date back 30 centuries before the Common Era. From clocks to the 12-month calendar to agriculture and fashion, we continue to experience the echoes of Ancient Egypt in the world we live in today. Since in my childhood I am already very interested to know the different gods and goddesses. By reading this book, I felt like I was brought to the ancient times of Egypt. I really felt like I was beholding the gods and goddesses in front of me. It is concise, with short summary for each god and goddess but still with valuable information. I also love the hieroglyphics included in the book. If you want to know the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt, then get this book!

"The Leatherwood God"(1916),based on an actual case, is a novel about a small Ohio village in the 1820s. One day a charismatic stranger, named Joseph Dylks, turns up there. At first he claims to be sent by God, then to actually be God himself. As unlikely as it seems, about a third of the town believe him and become his followers. But there are skeptics in the village of Leatherwood. One of them Matthew Braile, justice of the peace, is content to poke fun at the ease with which this con man has won over so many in the village. But when Dylks promises a miracle and fails to deliver, some of the skeptics become violent and Dylks and his followers are driven out. In this novel Howells shows how ready some 19th century Americans were to believe almost any religious claim, however outrageous. The thoughtful reader might wonder whether we are any different today. A wise and amusing book.

About the Author Sean Gordon has been working in the music industry professionally for over 15 years and has been composing music for over 20. He has composed and produced music for NBC, Discovery, Nintendo, X-Box, Shell, Bank of New York, Franklin Templeton Investments, Kikkoman, Redd’s Apple Ale, Spy Gear, Bay Club, Philips, Underworld, Wasteland, Urgency, Red Robin… and many more. His earlier years were spent in touring rock band “Burning Tree Project” as the lead guitar player. After four albums and even appearing on MTV, he quit the band to pursue his own music. He then got his big break in licensing via a phone call from an old friend who was working behind the scenes in the music business. As a hobby Sean would record and posts videos on his YouTube channel as "Shonsta". As a result of posting his first video “Simpsons Unplugged” way back when YouTube first started, he was invited to several Simpsons scoring sessions where composer Alf Claussen (Composer for The Simpsons) helped transform him into the composer he is today. He then opened his own recording studio (Digital Dungeon) and began producing bands and artists in North Hollywood, CA. This would lead to film score and the very secretive world of custom commercial cues. In 2011, Sean moved to San Francisco, CA and opened a post audio house with a business partner for several years. He has since been solely composing music for commercials and finally retired from the composing business to pursue his other life passions.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love it! By Derek W. Lantzsch Well Sean has done it in a big way. This is an easy to follow and obviously a hands on approach to making it with your music. As a musician and a writer I am appreciative to someone who's made it clear for me something that is obscured and complex. I can see this benefiting both the new writer/composer and professionals alike. I'm actually printing out, to post on my wall - to keep me motivated, some of the pages.
