He never expected the clues to lead to her…

Edward Adair, heir to the Duke of Boulstridge, is more interested in finding a missing family heirloom than a wife. But when his parents issue an ultimatum – marry or lose your allowance – he reluctantly agrees to attend a house party to find a bride. Instead, he discovers attractive but infuriating Miss Isabella Winthrop in his library, reading the private family journal that holds clues to the location of the heirloom.

Though Isabella finds Edward haughty and arrogant, she offers to take him to the next clue mentioned in the journal if he will pay her, which will enable her to help her brother restore his estate. Edward counters with an offer of an even larger payment…if she agrees to masquerade as his betrothed to deter the other ladies until the house party ends.

As they work together to solve the mystery their mutual attraction grows, but just when they begin to think they should make their engagement real, a secret is revealed that could destroy everything.

It will definitely be in my keeper file one that I will read again and again. ~Night Owl Reviews, 5 Stars & Top Pick Ally Broadfield has created strong characters full of personality. For Julia Quinn's fans, How to Bewitch an Earl is a story that will find its way to your heart without you realizing it. ~Lizzie, My Read Journal Ms. Broadfield is one of the authors who's making historical romance easy to read, when the language used is not complicatedly accurate for the time period, but at the same time maintaining the feel of it with the proper habits and ways of the moment. ~An Edgy Review by Sparkles Loved this quick, felt-new and different romance. Highly enjoyable By Splashes Into Books This is a regency/Victorian mystery to uncover a family heirloom with a romance, too.Edward Adair is heir to the Duke of Boulstridge but his parents have had enough of his gallivanting and issue dire warnings about the consequences should he not change his ways. His father believes the best way for Edward to do this is to marry. With that in mind they have, without consulting him, organised a house party in a fortnight to which they have invited several eligible young ladies (with their mothers as chaperones). Edward is told he can invite some of his friends, too. He’s not really impressed by the idea as he hopes to make a love match like his parents and can’t see any such relationship developing from the party.Miss Isabella Winthrop is staying in the family home of the Duke as the companion to one of his mother’s friends. He is irate when he discovers her in the library reading the personal journal of his ancestor which contains clues to help uncover the location of a priceless family heirloom – a gold and pink diamond tiara. After this uncomfortable introduction the two end up working together to help discover the heirloom and mutual attraction grows. Isabella, however, has a secret and its discovery could change everything for them all.As a novella, this is a quick read and there isn’t really time for lots of character or plot development. However, this didn’t detract from making this an enjoyable story to escape into and the mystery of the missing heirloom added intrigue to the experience. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.

All in all, delightful By Mrs. RML This is a charming story, featuring a plucky heroine and an earl who must marry or be deprived of much of his inheritance. There's a house party full of potential brides, a mystery to be solved and the heroine's hidden secret. They all add to the atmosphere in this spirited tale. Edward Adair, the hero, is dashing but somewhat immature -- after all, his parents are fed up with his lifestyle and his father wants him to marry (we know his mother and father, the Duke and Duchess, from "How to Beguile a Duke"). Isabella Winthrop, on the other hand, is living as a companion so that her brother doesn't have to support her. She is smart and attractive -- and interested in the family mystery and intelligent enough to piece the clues together. The two team up to solve the mystery, leaving the potential brides all by their lonesome and eventually fake an engagement so they can spend more time searching for the lost tiara (the same one Edward's mother came to England to find). This is a light, enjoyable read, with a couple who you can see fall in love as they work together -- although Edward's reaction to Isabella's true identity does seem a bit much. He really does need to grow up, but I think Isabella will take care of that. All in all, delightful.(I received in ARC in return for an honest review)

I will say that I have read the first book "How to Beguile a Duke' and feel that it is helpful if you read that book first. You can go without reading it but I found that I was glad that I did not. This is a sweet story that did not have any real bad person and was basically a story about Edward Adair, heir to the Duke of Boulstridge and Miss Isabella Winthrop. Edward parents are throwing a house party for Edward to find a bride. Edward doesn't want to be married yet but see no choice as his father is threatening to cut him off with out a penny. Isabella is having to work as a paid companion to help her brother out to pay off the family bills. Isabella is attending the house party and meets Edward. They both set out to solve a family mystery that is been in Edwards family for years. This draws them closer together and set them to pretend to be engaged to hold of the young women after Edwards and Isabella thinks with the money Edward is paying her she can help her brother. The just didn't count how their feels would turn to the real thing. A really nice read and I hope that you will like it too!

These fifteen or so square miles of east central Ohio look quiet, but have played host to nearly anything and everything that can happen to a place. I'd say it's like wading into a puddle to find it thirty feet deep, cold and full of kraken, but that would ignore the uproarious laughter, loud noises and chocolate involved. If your ancestors were from here, this won't give you their begats and dates, but it might explain who they were and who we still are. If you live here, I hope you can look back and remember most of it more or less fondly.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You'll enjoy it and learn from it. By Marian Kowalski This book is thick with details of life around Pipe Creek and Dilles Bottom. It isn't a coffee table book, and it is clear that production costs were held down in making it. The pages aren't numbered, and it has no index. But it holds serious research about Mead Township, in spite of the lighthearted chapter titles. For example, it traces the origins of the various churches, when they were built, when they were flooded or burned out and where they were rebuilt, comparing the versions published in county histories and maps from the 1800s with records kept by the denominations, residents, and remaining congregations. It also contains amusing and sometimes tragic stories about the community over the years. It delves into changes brought to the community by business, natural disasters, and coal mining, from the perspective of the people who lived there and still do.

I grew up hearing stories of her childhood there and I was also looking forward to reading this book and seeing all the pictures. This was enthusiastically recommended by someone from that area who posted on a message board that I visit frequently.Sorry to say that it was a real disappointment. It is written in a rambling manner and laid out in very tight, small print. The book was touted as having many great photos. Yes, it does have many, all of which are extremely small and very poor quality. It is too difficult to read.Maybe with better organization and layout, and larger print, I could recommend it. As it is now, I cannot read it in order to recommend it. It was a waste of money.

Review

“The chapter opening immediately drew me in to extent that I went straight to YouTube and began watching and listening to footage of the Cat Island festival from 2007.”

Professor David Moskowitz, University of South Dakota

“The introduction is spectacular, especially components such as "basic assumptions" and "universals"; also box on "transmission" and summary points. The colored boxes, coded for listening or important items and issues, are truly a "plus", as are the end-of-chapter references to further readings and listening.”

Professor Patricia Campbell, University of Washington

“I was very impressed with the quality of this book.  The information was concise, easy to read, but most importantly, touched on important issues in ethnomusicology that cut across cultures.”

Professor Jay Keister, University of Colorado, Boulder

“The writing is engaging, the listening guides are helpful (and not overly detailed), all the writers are knowledgeable.”

Professor Stephen Blum, CUNY Graduate Center

“The introductory sections of most chapters help to engage the students and make them feel like a part of each culture. The chapters generally have clear explanations of a culture's musical style (especially Indonesia, China, Japan, India, the Middle East, and Latin America). Having chapters written by different specialists helps to keep the student's interest because of the individual approaches taken.”

Professor John Robison, University of South Florida

“I like how the authors introduce and define musical terminology and concepts into the text as they are being talked about, rather then segregating these materials to separate chapters. This allows the instructor to talk about these terms and concepts 'in context.' I also like the straight-forward style of narrative that, at the same time, does not shy away from introducing complex problems.”

Professor Peter Marsh, California State University, East Bay

Information is based on authors opinion By nky The narration of this book is based more on the opinion and story of the author rather than an informative textbook. I only bought this book because it was required for one of my classes, otherwise, I would not have even considered it at all.

The book is story-like, I am not a fan of that style as I prefer the authors get straight to the point when writing on diverse topics. The chapters are fairly lengthy, but it was everything I needed for a class that required this book

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Socialism and botany By Rose Hobart This eccentric and beautiful book, kept in print all these years by the noble Charles Kerr Publishers, makes the case for sentience in the plant world. France's writing is expertly rendered into careful and poetic English. The book was a part of the Workingman's Library, a counterweight to that tedious propaganda called 'education' which merely serves to further the pathological idea that capitalism is true progress. In the West, we ignorantly assign perceptive life only to blooded creatures. This book extends perceptive life to the green world and demands a humane socialism from the intricate analogy of the stamens, flowers, and roots of a republic we have denigrated and forgotten. The book is also a fine rebuff to the social-Darwinist racists and mechanists who see the universe as one great adding machine. Indeed, the universe of William Blake is not far from 'The Germs of Mind in Plants'. France's book achieves an earthy magic, where the working day, riddled with exploitation and class war, can be pierced by a dialectic of flower and fly.I strongly recommend this passionate, civilized, and highly original work. All ecological work should proceed along these lines. If it did, it would avoid the sentimentality and suburban misanthropy that so often plagues it.This book is both a treatise and a work of poetry by a true scientist. Should be contemplated as such.

SOE agent Violette Szabo was the daughter of an English father and French mother, and widow of a French army officer killed in action in North Africa in 1942. On her second mission she was captured by the Germans, interrogated and tortured, and deported to Germany, where she was eventually executed at Ravensbrück concentration camp. The bare bones of her story say nothing of the sabotage, gun battles, betrayal. Violette was the second woman ever to be awarded the George Cross, and she was immortalized in the film Carve her Name with Pride. What marks out this book is the simple, extraordinary fact is that is written by her daughter, Tania: she would have been two years old when she last saw her mother, the woman fellow agent Odette Churchill called "the bravest of us all."

By Kznalstud A story that needs to be read, it shows the horrors that existd in the 1930's till the end of World War II. It shows the mass horrors created by the Germans and makes a person wonder how the general population in Germany could not have known what their leaders, and fellow country men were doing to the Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, POWs, spies and anybody a leader did not like. It shows the courage and dedication that other people demonstrated in this time of conflict, especially one true woman patriot of the British SOE.

The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish religious work, ascribed by tradition to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah, although modern scholars estimate the older sections (mainly in the Book of the Watchers) to date from about 300 BC, and the latest part (Book of Parables) probably to the end of the first century BC.  From the preface:  "THE object of this series of translations is primarily to furnish students with short, cheap, and handy text-books, which, it is hoped, will facilitate the study of the particular texts in class under competent teachers. But it is also hoped that the volumes will be acceptable to the general reader who may be interested in the subjects with which they deal. It has been thought advisable, as a general rule, to restrict the notes and comments to a small compass; more especially as, in most cases, excellent works of a more elaborate character are available. Indeed, it is much to be desired that these translations may have the effect of inducing readers to study the larger works. Our principal aim, in a word, is to make some difficult texts, important for the study of Christian origins, more generally accessible in faithful and scholarly translations. In most cases these texts are not available in a cheap and handy form. In one or two cases texts have been included of books which are available in the official Apocrypha; but in every such case reasons exist for putting forth these texts in a new translation, with an Introduction, in this series."
