The Origins of Ancient Vietnam explores the origins of civilization in the Red River Delta of Vietnam and how related studies can inform our understanding of ancient societies, generally, and the foundations of Vietnamese culture, specifically. Long believed to be the cradle of Vietnamese civilization, this area has been referenced by Vietnamese and Chinese writers for centuries, many recording colorful tales and legends about the region's prehistory. One of the most enduring accounts relates the story of the Au Lac Kingdom and its capital of Co Loa. Founded during the third century BC, according to legend, the fortified city's ramparts still stand today. However, there are ongoing debates about the origins of the site, the validity of the literary accounts, and the link between the prehistoric past and later Vietnamese societies. The Han Empire's later annexation of the region, combined with the problematic accounts found in the Chinese chronicles, further complicates these questions. Recent decades of archaeology in the region have provided new perspectives for examining these issues. The material record reveals indigenous trajectories of cultural change throughout the prehistoric period, culminating in the emergence of a politically sophisticated society. Specifically, new data indicate the founding of Co Loa by an ancient state, centuries before the Han arrival. In The Origins of Ancient Vietnam, Nam Kim synthesizes the archaeological evidence for this momentous development, placing Co Loa within a wider, global setting of emergent cities, states, and civilizations.

Review "A timely study of early state formation in Southeast Asia. Kim's confident and clear account of developments centered on the monumental site of Co Loa in northern Vietnam includes a review of textual and archaeological data, along with the key finding that Co Loa's initial construction phase preceded the area's formal incorporation into China." --Francis Allard, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

"In this outstanding volume Nam Kim describes how his excavations have identified a capital that was founded by an aristocratic elite, prospered in its rich habitat, and ultimately faced Han Chinese imperial ambitions. Formerly the stuff of legendary kings, we now have a new and convincing prehistory anchored by the results of intense archaeological fieldwork." --Charles Higham, University of Otago

Ebook PDF Online Wild Yankees: The Struggle for Independence along Pennsylvania's Revolutionary Frontier, by Paul B. Moyer

Northeast Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley was truly a dark and bloody ground, the site of murders, massacres, and pitched battles. The valley's turbulent history was the product of a bitter contest over property and power known as the Wyoming controversy. This dispute, which raged between the mid-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, intersected with conflicts between whites and native peoples over land, a jurisdictional contest between Pennsylvania and Connecticut, violent contention over property among settlers and land speculators, and the social tumult of the American Revolution. In its later stages, the controversy pitted Pennsylvania and its settlers and speculators against "Wild Yankees"―frontier insurgents from New England who contested the state's authority and soil rights.

In Wild Yankees, Paul B. Moyer argues that a struggle for personal independence waged by thousands of ordinary settlers lay at the root of conflict in northeast Pennsylvania and across the revolutionary-era frontier. The concept and pursuit of independence was not limited to actual war or high politics; it also resonated with ordinary people, such as the Wild Yankees, who pursued their own struggles for autonomy. This battle for independence drew settlers into contention with native peoples, wealthy speculators, governments, and each other over land, the shape of America's postindependence social order, and the meaning of the Revolution. With vivid descriptions of the various levels of this conflict, Moyer shows that the Wyoming controversy illuminates settlement, the daily lives of settlers, and agrarian unrest along the early American frontier.

Review

"The concept and pursuit of independence was not limited to actual war of high politics; it also resonated with ordinary people, such as the Wild Yankees, who pursued their own struggle for autonomy. With vivid descriptions of the various levels of the conflict, the author shows that the Wyoming controversy illuminates the process of settlement, the daily lives of settlers, and agrarian unrest along the early American frontier."―Pennsylvania Heritage

"Moyer can hold his head high, having written for the northeastern Pennyslvania frontier a history comparable to Alan Taylor's Liberty Men and the Great Proprietors and Reeve Huston's Land and Freedom for upstate New York."―American Historical Review

"In Wild Yankees, Paul B. Moyer provides more than a fresh take on the sad history of the rural insurgency in Pennsylvania's Susquehanna Valley. At the same time that Moyer unpacks the story of how Anglo-Americans competed violently with Native Americans and with each other, making his book a useful study for historians of Pennyslvania, he uses the fight for land to provide an alternative framework for understanding the American Revolution."―Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography

"Wild Yankees is a highly readable account of the turmoil in Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley from the 1750s to the early 1800s. Paul B. Moyer characterizes the events as a farmers' revolution, and his key argument is that the contest over control of northeastern Pennsylvania (commonly referred to as the Yankee-Pennamite Wars) was part of a larger pattern of agrarian unrest that paralleled the Regulator Movement in North Carolina in the 1770s, Shays' Rebellion in western Massachusetts in the mid-1780s, and the Whiskey Rebellion in southwestern Pennsylvania in the 1790s. . . . It is a vivid account of the turmoil along Pennsylvania's northeastern frontier from the mid-eighteenth century into the early nineteenth century. . . . Wild Yankees certainly is an important contribution to the literature of the American Revolution in Pennsylvania, and it is a volume that anyone interested in frontier settlement, ethnic conflict, and Pennsylvania history should read."―Pennsylvania History

"Paul B. Moyer casts the struggles between Connecticut claimants and Pennsylvania settlers at the center of a new view of the American Revolutionary period. Moyer's emphasis on the farmers' revolution and the struggles over property and power on the Pennsylvania frontier significantly adds to the growing scholarship focusing on the lives of ordinary folk. Wild Yankees clearly illustrates how the everyday experiences of those living on the frontier shaped the American Revolution."―Jeffrey A. Davis, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania

"Paul B. Moyer's evocation of the day-to-day interests of Pennamites and Connecticut claimants is vivid; Wild Yankees shows that the American Revolution and its immediate aftermath were part of a larger internal struggle over the future of America. Moyer helps to demolish the notion of a single group of 'settlers' by showing the vehement animosity among Anglo-Americans in the region as they struggled with each other over subsistence and land rights."―Gregory Knouff, Keene State College

"In Wild Yankees, Paul B. Moyer recaptures the violence and uncertainty of the Susquehanna backcountry during the Revolutionary Era. This book skillfully reconstructs the mental and social world of the Yankees and Pennamites who clashed over these lands and connects them to the wider currents of private ambition and agrarian protest that transformed the new nation's frontier."―Timothy J. Shannon, Gettysburg College

From the Back Cover "Paul B. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a fascinating read By Gail Strevy Bought this book hoping it would shed some light on the lives of Susquehanna Company settlers in northern Pennsylvania. It delivered that and more. If you have ancestors who lived in Bradford County Pennsylvania before 1800, this book is a must-read. If you just like reading history books, this one covers an American war most people have never even heard of.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. tells the story well but ignores too much yankee culture By Barry J. Levy Paul Moyer tells the prolonged and complex story of the Connecticut colonization of Pennsylvania and its attendant violence. The research is quite good and the narrative clear, if academic. Moyer brings many of the characters in this bloody series of incidents to life and this book will highlight one of the major wars within the American Revolution. Readers will be shocked at the amount of blood letting between Yankees and Pennsylvanians.Moyer wants to strip the "wild Yankees" of their special character as New Englanders, arguing that their surge for independence was nearly identical to North Carolina regulators and other frontiersmen. But this point of view denudes the Yankees of their own culture including schools and powerful and engaging towns-- unusual features on the Pennsylvania frontier-- and the Yankees continuing ties to their Connecticut homelands.Still, a first rate piece of work.

A Fascinating Look at Revolutionary Spirit in Early America's Frontier By RDD In "Wild Yankees: The Struggle for Independence Along Pennsylvania's Revolutionary Frontier", Paul Moyer examines conflict between Connecticut and Pennsylvanian settlers in the backcountry of Pennsylvania. Moyer argues "the violent struggle over property that beset America's hinterlands, rather than representing the byproduct of the 'real' Revolution made by the Founding Fathers, was the Revolution for large numbers of ordinary folk. The farmer's revolution was not the result of ideas that trickled down from above, but of aspirations and experiences that bubbled up from below" (p. 10). Farmers in the backcountry viewed the acquisition and possession of land as independence made manifest and viciously fought those they believed were a threat to their property claims. Further, "the revolutionary frontiers' struggle for independence was also closely bound to male settlers' efforts to attain and protect a masculine ideal" in which their ownership of land and status as head-of-household represented the most localized form of independence (p. 63). In the end, the settlers' development of the land led to the creation of towns and societies bound by the market to the country around them, putting an end to their desire for a break with Pennsylvania.Moyer's research relies heavily on letters, court records, and other testimony from the region with occasional segues to provide backgound about concepts or developments in the larger social fabric of revolutionary New England. His greatest contribution is to show that these incidents of frontier violence were not exceptions to the revolutionary spirit of the fledgling nation, but rather expressions of those ideas on the individual level.

This is about how an unplanned encounter by the author evolved into a worthy story ...a life story about how a young Walter Rothwell, born in the US, grew up in Switzerland and became fluent in four languages by the time he was ...drafted in the US Army during World War II.  Being drafted the same month that the war ended might seem fortuitous, but because of his shrewd language abilities, it enticed him into a world of strategic intelligence ...and ultimately Cold War espionage. He became a spy.He earned rank as well as prestige as the go-to person for unearthing worthy information ...from gumshoe to classroom expert ...from authority of on-the-street mole tactics to eventually delivering the necessary backup for momentous Cold War decisions in 1952. Rothwell delivered consequence ...oh so inconspicuously.[Special update:  Walter Rothwell passed away the morning of January 21, 2016 ... peacefully while reading his favorite books]

Inconspicuous: Walter Rothwell's Undercover Journey During the Cold War, by Wes Choc

From the Author In 2013, I took photos of Wally Rothwell ... pictures that I incorporated into our community newsletter called Javalina.Line along with a short story about his thirty years living here and specifically in celebration of his 90th birthday. This lead to my questions about what he had done in his life, and we chatted about some mutual activities in Vietnam. I gave him my book, Just Dust - An Improbable Marine's Vietnam Story, to read. Every time we met at the mailbox, we'd exchange questions. These chats got deeper and deeper, and his reminiscing more captivating and poignant. Paragraphs turned into chapters, and in the course of a year, into the book titled Inconspicuous - Walter Rothwell's Undercover Journey During the Cold War.

From the Back Cover My first work, Just Dust - An Improbable Marine's Vietnam Story is my personal heartfelt journey during an audacious period of US history ... about seing war and trekking many "roads less traveled" than most other young military men ever do.More recently, I innocently befriended a neighbor, Walter Rothwell. Unknowingly, Our encounters turned into hours of chatting with Wally about his own journey. I had no idea I lived near a spy ... not just a spy of consequence but one with a story worth telling! So, I present to you Wally's journey ... Inconspicuous. Wes Choc, Author

About the Author Wes Choc grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, living there until 1965 when he joined the Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. Since the end of his military service in 1969, he worked for the American Automobile Association for over forty years. In 1992 he was appointed president and CEO of AAA MountainWest, overseeing business and club operations in Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska. After retiring from AAA in 2008, he and his wife, Carol, moved to Arizona. Wes has become an active community volunteer. With his TEFL certificate in hand, he spent three months teaching English as a second language in Ecuador. Back at home, Wes tutors English regularly for new US residents. He also mentors homeless and troubled youth. Wes has worked with veterans in Montana and Arizona, especially with vets returning from overseas with PTSD or other disabilities. He is currently an active volunteer at the Tucson Veterans' Hospital helping recovering vets. Wes enjoys writing and has recently established his own publishing platform aptly named Chosen Journey Media. With his initial success of   "Just Dust - An Improbable Marine's Story", Wes went back to work and is delighted to have completed "Inconspicuous" as a life story told to him by a friend who also served the United States proudly in uniform. Carol and Wes Choc make their home in Tucson, Arizona. With his first work in the 'books', Wes Choc sought new work after publishing Just Dust. As it turns out, Wes' next project lived right across the street. Wes befriended his neigbor, Walter Rothwell. In casual conversation, Wes establsihed that Wally was a spy. After hours and months of casual conversation, Wes captured Wally's story. He is now proud to present it first a a tribute to Wally for his service to our nation and then to you for your enjoyment. An individual raised during WWII in Europe and starting his trade at the beginning of the Cold War. This account is about an agent in the shadows but yet with a private family. From West Germany in the late 1940's to Vietnam in the early 1960's, an account of learning the trade of an Intelligence officer and retiring to America to live out his life. Uniquely different!Sadly one of the last of his generation.

A simple guide on DSLR photography By Matt Smith I am planning to buy a DSLR camera anytime soon but my worry is that I have no idea how to use it as I find it too complicated compared to a smartphone. Thanks to this book, I learned the basic functions of the different parts of this tool and how I can use them to adjust how the image would like. I really love the lessons inside especially Chapter 5 wherein the author gave some tricks on how you can best capture your object. Upon learning these things, I became more interested to get one so I can try it out myself. I can't wait to start capturing life events and nature using this awesome tool and implementing the things I learned from this informational read.

For a man who grew up to become the “Bull Moose”, Theodore Roosevelt was a sickly child, suffering from asthma and other maladies. But his physical weakness actually drove him to be more active, which also fostered an interest in nature. It also helped that Teddy’s family was wealthy, allowing him privileges including home school and the ability to attend Harvard, where he was an athlete and took an interest in naval affairs. After finishing at Harvard, Teddy entered politics, but it didn’t stop him from writing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, establishing himself as a professional writer and historian.  In the 1890s, it was Teddy’s turn to make history, leading the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War and being decorated for his service with a Medal of Honor. He parlayed his glory into the governorship of New York and then the Vice Presidency under William McKinley. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, young Teddy was thrust into the presidency, one that would earn him a place on Mount Rushmore, Roosevelt’s “Square Deal” domestic policies favored average citizens while busting trusts and monopolies. Roosevelt also promoted conservation as an environmental stance, while his “speak softly and carry a big stick” foreign policy is still an oft used phrase today. Roosevelt even earned a Nobel Prize during his presidency.   By the time Roosevelt died in 1919, he was an American icon. Today, Teddy is remembered for being an explorer, hunter, author, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, all of which combine into one unique reputation.

Roosevelt writes with honesty (who admits that they miss alot more that they actually hit with a rifle?) and gives you a sense of being there.
