About the Author Author of the iconic novel The Thirty-Nine Steps, John Buchan filled many roles including barrister, colonial administrator, publisher, Director of Intelligence, and Member of Parliament. The Thirty-Nine Steps, first in the Richard Hannay series, is widely regarded as the starting point for espionage fiction and was written to pass time while Buchan recovered from an illness. During the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan wrote propaganda for the British war effort, combining his skills as author and politician. In 1935 Buchan was appointed the 15th Governor General of Canada and established the Governor General s Literacy Award. Buchan was enthusiastic about literacy and the evolution of Canadian culture. He died in 1940 and received a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the United Kingdom.

Adventure on a Large Canvas: South Africa By Chris Ward This novel, set more than a century ago in backwater South Africa, is the great grandfather of today's thrillers. Buchan, who perfected the form in "The 39 Steps" some years later, gives his young hero plenty to do in sussing out and confronting a massive uprising by tribesmen who wish to slaughter all the white settlers for a hundred miles around. The writing is smooth and the situations are generally believable, though modern readers will have to forgive Buchan for some racist sentiments completely common at the time. Both black and white characters are compellingly and sympathetically drawn, though, so there's no reason to apologize for the book. Read it and be taken back to another time and another place, and imagine how Hollywood would produce this today-- it feels totally contemporary in terms of its "Indiana Jones" adventure plot. Enjoy! If you want to learn how the native population may have viewed that colonization, you got it, this is the book. This book is about a Scottish immigrant who comes to South Africa and becomes involved in both situations. This book is a very active narrative that keeps the Scot on his feet, and then some, literally. Be prepared to try to understand the attitudes and customs of that time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Adventure in the Transvaal colony in late 19th century By catlover John Buchan's Prester John is non-stop adventure. A plucky young Brit, David Crawfurd, is sent by his uncle to South Africa to serve as assistant storekeeper on a lonely stretch of African countryside. The head storekeeper is a drunk who engages in secret meetings with local tribesmen and a dissolute Portuguese. The native Africans are behaving strangely, and a mysterious, charismatic African minister with dark secrets appears to have some kind of hold over the countryside. As David pieces together the clues, he discovers a terrifying plot afoot on the plains. Buchan knew how to slowly build suspense and then set a prolonged, breakneck pace for the adventures, struggles, and seemingly insurmountable odds for his protagonists to overcome. I have also read his Salute to Adventurers and 39 Steps, and this was his plot device in all three. He was a master at this genre. David's chief adversary, the African minister, is a rich and complex character, both brilliant and noble and written with heart, despite his drive to overcome the white settlers. Buchan was apparently a strong advocate for the British Empire over colonial interests, so some of his observations will strike modern readers as offensive. But, if you read this with a sense that you are doing so with the hindsight of evolved ideas, it is great reading.

About the Author Jean Lucey Pratt was born in 1909 in Wembley, Middlesex and lived much of her life in a small cottage on the edge of Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire. A Notable Woman By S Riaz Author Simon Garfield first came across Jean Lucey Pratt when he was looking for war diaries, from the Mass Observation archive, for a previous book. He renamed her ‘Maggie Joy Blunt’ for that project, but now has edited the diaries of her whole life, from when she first began her diary in 1925 at the age of just 15, until her death in 1986. I have to admit to a feeling of discomfort if reading the private diaries of an individual, but if you have the same feelings then you can safely put them aside. For her entire life, Jean was an aspiring writer and often remarks that she hopes her diaries will be preserved, and even published. As such, I felt great pleasure in reading the words she wrote not just for herself, but for posterity.Jean was born in 1909 and began writing the journal which would continue for sixty years in 1925. This book incorporates about one sixth of the written material and much of it, but not all, does centre on the war years, when she was in her early thirties. We begin with childhood crushes and the remarriage of her widowed father, as Jean considers becoming an architect like her father and worries about her performances at the tennis club. These early years really give us a sense of Jean’s personality and, although obviously she changes, there are some traits that stay with her. She has a fear of being suburbanised and narrow minded, she yearns for love and encouragement and she dreams of romance and writing.Without doubt, Jean longed always to learn and experience the most from life. She enjoyed travel and always embraced the most from every holiday, friendship and romance. However, she was also often crippled by self doubt, shyness and insecurity. Despite her personal worries though, she did her best to enjoy every experience. She transfers from architecture to journalism, travels to Jamaica, Russia and even Germany in 1936 and was interested in politics, art and literature. Although she did her best to remain upbeat and worshipped her elder brother, she suffered from the petty humiliations of life – being unable to come up with a partner for a dance or foursome, for example. As such, I really warmed to Jean for exposing her fears, cheered even her minor triumphs and suffered her self-doubts alongside her.Some readers may have come across Jean before, from Simon Garfield’s previous compilation of war diaries and a large part of this book does contain entries from those years – from early worries about the possibility of war, through the blitz and her concern that she must ‘do something’ to help. She is also surprised at how life goes on in London, despite the bombing and muses on how, when she reads Katharine Mansfield’s journals, she is astonished at how she stood aloof from events in WWI. Obviously, this is something she is unable to do, as she is personally impacted by everything from bombs to rationing and it does really does illustrate life on the Home Front during the war.Even during wartime though, Jean is always concerned with the private as well as world events. She is constantly assessing eligible men and longs for marriage. This then is the story of the private, as well as the public. Anxieties, frustrations, affairs of the heart, her feelings of failure and her successes – the little victories, delight over small windfalls and her own frustration at failing to feel content will all resonate with readers. I am delighted I read this diary and felt great affection for the romantic Jean. It was a shame that she was often so hard on herself, but I am sure she would be so pleased to find that readers were finally discovering her. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

It is more something you choose to observe and perhaps passing judgement is unfair. In my view this book is a very interesting insight into the life of a forward thinking woman, living through the second world war. It is at times frustrating to read, you want to shake the author, but at others to utterly honest and relatable even many years later.Worth a read but it does move slowly and isn't 'gripping'.

The Great Depression of the 1930s had a devastating impact on sparsely populated Nevada and its two major industries, mining and agriculture. Luckily, thanks to Nevada’s powerful Senate delegation, Roosevelt’s New Deal funding flowed abundantly into the state. Among the programs thus supported was the Civilian Conservation Corps, a federal program intended to provide jobs for unemployed young men and a pool of labor for essential public lands rehabilitation projects. In all, nearly thirty-one thousand men were employed in fifty-nine CCC camps across Nevada, most of them from outside the state. These “boys,” as they were called, went to work improving the state’s forests, parks, wildlife habitats, roads, fences, irrigation systems, flood-control systems, and rangelands, while learning valuable skills on the job. Rural communities near CCC camps reaped additional benefits when local men were hired as foremen and when the camps purchased supplies from local merchants.  The Civilian Conservation Corps in Nevada is the first comprehensive history of the Nevada CCC, a program designed to help the nation get back on its feet, and of the “boys” who did so much to restore Nevada’s lands and resources. The book is based on extensive research in private manuscript collections, unpublished memoirs, CCC inspectors’ reports, and other records. From the Author "One need not look far to find reminders of the Great Depression in Nevada. Most Nevadans, however, don’t remember that the Civilian Conservation Corps built many of the park trails, roads, reservoirs and canals that 70 years later, remain important parts of our infrastructure. As an archaeologist, I often stumbled across old truck bodies or crumbling water troughs in the desert. I hiked trails in our state parks without giving a second thought as to the builders. I learned about the CCC after researching a CCC-built road through Ruby Valley. I looked for books or reports on the CCC program and found bits and pieces but no comprehensive works covering the entire state. I was intrigued and wanted to know more.

"Between 1933-1942, tens of thousands of young men (aged 17-28) were sent here to help Nevada with its environmental dilemmas. It was hard to imagine New Yorkers in Nevada in those days when the population was barely 90,000. Nevada’s insular communities were exposed to men from very different backgrounds. Similarly, the outsiders often suffered from culture shock and homesickness. But overall, it was a positive experience for both Nevada’s citizenry and the boys who were away from home for the first time.

"My father, a member of the 'Greatest Generation,' died in 1999. I miss him terribly and found solace in the company of men of this age—listening to stories about hoboes and hard times during the Great Depression and then the loyalty they felt when our country came under siege during WWII. He enlisted in the Navy seven days after Pearl Harbor was bombed. My father never mentioned the CCC but he would have fit the eligibility criteria (young, poor, and out of work). I wish I had asked him why he never joined." -Renée Corona Kolvet

About the Author Renée Corona Kolvet is a federal archaeologist with a special interest in the Depression-era American West. She has written several articles on the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Indian New Deal and recently completed a photo history of Hoover Dam.   Victoria Ford is a former communications specialist for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. She is an oral historian who has published fifteen books on Nevada and its people.

Smith This is a worthwhile statewide history of the CCC that should appeal to both the leisure reader and the scholarly researcher. Anyone who's undertaken to research just a single CCC camp knows what a daunting job that can be; imagine researching CCC work across an entire state! Utilizing a range of source material Kolvet and Ford detail CCC work under every technical service that operated in Nevada from 1933 to 1942. Of particular interest is the camp listing at the rear of the book, which lists Nevada's CCC camps in groups by designation: Division of Grazing (DG), Bureau of Reclamation (BR), Biological Survey/Fish & Wildlife Service (BF/FWS), National and State Park (NP/SP), Navy (M), Forest Service (F) and Soil Conservation Service (SCS or PE or P for camps on private lands or for work done for a private entity). Often long on statistical data, this book is nevertheless a must-have for any CCC or New Deal library, as it includes the personal memories of men who will not be around to tell their story too much longer.

For example chapter one - Germans invade Poland, British stops all trade with Germany after the Jews in Poland were round up according to this book. What about the British and France declaring war on Germany after they invaded Poland? Trade stopped at that point. Further in this chapter is written "His conquest was successful as most of Sweden and Norway was occupied by the Germans. ", Sweden occupied???? Later in this chapter " Germany faced a huge monetary loss and to top that the winter set in the Soviet Union claimed the lives of several German soldiers." , Several????Just of the few items that make this book hard to read and believe.

Sad to Report By Red Ryder This book appears to be written by someone who writes English as a second or third language, or translated by someone who faces the same language problems. Granted there is information re: the life and proclivities of Ms Grese; however, nothing is offered that could not be surmised by knowing she was a rising star of the SS. Horrible use of the English language with little information. Don't buy this book.

Hager What I thought was the beginning, preface, leading into more in-depth coverage ended up being the entire first half of the book. Much time was wasted in "what you will read in this chapter", "what will be covered shortly". Instead of events occurring in chronological order, all of a sudden and needlessly it would flash to the end then go back to detail before. (Execution described bluntly, to then go back and describe trial and execution in-depth). Typos and autocorrect galore.

About the Author Julie Checkoway is an author and documentary filmmaker. She graduated from Harvard College, the Iowa Writers Workshop, and the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars. By Caroline I've been waiting about four months to post my five stars and great review of Julie Checkoway's book since my independent bookseller cousins unloaded it on me in NYC after they attended book convention here in June--this rather than having to drag all their free books back with them to New Orleans, La. (Poor cousins!) Anyway, I definitely won on this one. If I could have read this book in one night, I would have. My deterrent to one-night reading was that some portions/descriptions were so good that I had to read them over at least once. I also re-read my favorite portions several times after I finished the book. Although I thought that some portions should have moved more quickly than they did (specifically the first 100 or so pages describing the children's poverty-stricken life conditions and the World War II conditions the boys had to endure while fighting,) I thought the rest of the book more than made up for it. On a personal note, one of the boys in the Three-Year Swim Club was the reason my college's rival swim team had a reputation for so many years as unbeatable! Checkoway's research was daunting and so thorough it will make your eyes "swim" if you read the chapter where she details it. Ever since I read this book in late June, I have thought that it would be a best seller and a major motion picture. If I'm wrong so be it. But if you read it, you may understand why I think so many people will be drawn to it!

By Amazon Customer Julie Checkoway brings to life one of the most remarkable “LOST” stories in athletic, Olympic and swimming history. She incorporates a fascinating history of Hawaii, Japan and the Olympics to help tell the story of a Hall of Fame swimming coach who dreamed of making champions from the children of poverty-stricken, uneducated Japanese and Philippine- American sugar cane cutters on the island of Maui, in the Hawaiian islands. The coach was Soichi Sakamoto, a regular school teacher who had no background in athletics, let alone swimming, is the true-life hero. Fueled by the success of Japanese swimmers at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games, Sakamoto started teaching children swimming in the dirty, muddy sugar cane-plantation irrigation ditches. Some of his swimmers did so well that he came to believe, by 1937, that some of these kids could be Olympic Champions. Thus came the idea for the “Three Year Swim Club.” It was a challenge to the kids he had been training: if they worked hard, didn’t smoke, drink or gamble, obeyed their parents and coach, in three years, some would represent the United States, in the home of their ancestors, at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, in 1940. It is both an inspirational and emotional story - against all odds - filled with tragedies and triumphs and one that changed the world of swimming for ever. The story has been likened to Unbroken and Boys on the Boat. I would add Seabiscuit to that list (as the swimmers from Maui often had bigger headlines in the nation's papers than the horse). This story will be a fantastic new exhibit at the International Swimming Hall of Fame and could make a great movie.I recommend the audible.com version, as read by Alex Chadwick, but you’ll also want the book for its photos.I also really enjoyed her presentation in San Francisco, along with two-time Olympian Steve Clark (see photo). By Jacqui Wittmeyer Awe-inspiring characters against all odds achieve extraordinary feats in all aspects of life, impeccably researched and well written--what more can one ask for in this extraordinary book. Thank you Julie Checkoway for so thoughtfully and skillfully telling us this unforgettable story that otherwise very well would have faded into history. I found myself thinking about excerpts long after I had left the page and throughout the day. Coach Soichi Sakamoto saw promise and potential in what others, at first glance, would dismiss as hopeless; both in the tenacious, embolden kids that he trained, as well as with the tools he resurrected (that others had discarded as junk) that he resourcefully and ingeniously engineered as cross-training tools. He is a true American hero, far ahead of his time. All members of The Three Year Swim Club should be properly recognized and commended for their truly remarkable accomplishments, both in and out of the water. For success and achievements in life are not simply measured by the end goal, but how far and swiftly one swims upstream through the overwhelming current they are up against.
