Act Like It, by Lucy Parker

Review "Renowned London actor Richard Troy's reputation has taken a beating. Given Richard's stoic, icy, some might even say rude demeanour, combined with rumors of his temper and rich-boy status, the British tabloids are having a field day that only his stage presence can repel. Even his talents can't stop the gossip, and when his agent suggests a solution to his sullied reputation--a fake relationship with the theater world's sweetheart Lainie Graham--Richard reluctantly agrees. Lainie wants no part of this ploy and certainly no extra time with ornery Richard Troy, but then she's offered a deal she can't resist, and they'll both be in for the most difficult roles of their careers--acting like they're in love. Yet when real affection and a fragile closeness grow, Lainie and Richard understand a grain of truth in their ruse and must decide whether their tempestuous love is worth the fight... Well written, with very human characters and an entertaining plot, this debut novel is highly recommended for romance lovers who enjoy gratifying, hilarious stories... - Library Journal."ACT LIKE IT combines some of my favorite elements in a chick-lit novel: sharp, relevant humor, celebrity gossip and a couple of complex characters that grow into a relationship instead of sharing insta-love... I absolutely adored the biting and sometimes snarky humor; it was both relevant and hysterical... Bottom Line: Funny, sexy and plain ole' terrific chick-lit read!" - The Romance Reviews

About the Author Lucy Parker lives in the gorgeous Central Otago region of New Zealand, where she feels lucky every day to look out at mountains, lakes, and vineyards. She has a degree in Art History, loves museums and art galleries, and doodles unrecognizable flowers when she has writer's block.  When she's not writing, working or sleeping, she happily tackles the towering pile of to-be-read books that never gets any smaller. Thankfully, there's always another story waiting. Her interest in romantic fiction began with a pre-teen viewing of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice (Firth-style), which prompted her to read the book as well. A family friend introduced her to Georgette Heyer, and the rest was history. You can find her on Twitter @_LucyParker, or on her website: lucyparkerfiction.com.

The basis of the story is similar to ones I have read before, but it is written so much better.Richard Troy's public image needs a boost, and his agent thinks up a brilliant plan. Well, brilliant from everyone else's point of view, but not Richard's. He has to appear to be romantically involved with Lainie Graham, a fellow theatrical actress who has previously been romantically linked to yet another of her co-stars.Richard is best described as a grumpy git who fancies himself as a bit of a ladies man. But therein lies the problem. His previous liaisons, combined with the fallout from his bad temper, have led to him having a very poor image in the public eye. Lainie doesn't expect much from him, and that is proved to be right as they begin the charade.Being theatrical people the language the characters use is absolutely brilliant throughout the story. The author, I believe, has either had a theatrical background herself, or is more than familiar with those working within the theatre. The language used makes for some hilarious moments throughout.I really enjoyed this story and found myself laughing out loud on more than a few occasions.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. From Pretend to Real By Katrina T. The hero and heroine are stage actors who have to pretend to date each other for publicity. The hero’s image gets cleaned up, and the heroine gets to have some money donated to her charity, which would be a win-win for all. The author’s voice is authentic and fresh. I like the light-hearted banter and how the characters grow on each other. There aren’t any of those “I’m pretending but I’m not and I’m so confused” thoughts that we usually see in these tropes. They are honest from the moment they stop pretending and really begin seeing each other romantically. The hero is a redeemable alpha-asshole.

I had no idea how much I was missing that artfully smart/dry British humor until I read this little beauty. This was the type of slow burn read that makes the brush of an arm leave you REELING for pages!!! Seriously, the amount of squealing butterflies Lucy Parker's writing gave me is kind of pathetic (on my part...not hers).Okay favorite things about this book:1. The Characters!!! Richard....R.I.C.H.A.R.D. I've never read a more hot, owly, opinionated, smart alec of a hero that I wanted to make my own. And Lanie...just the perfect contrast to his crassness. They were exquisite together.2. The Writing!!! Skillful, highly talented and gorgeously executed. Not to mention super smart. Several references I didn't even understand, which I LOVE. I like being pushed!3. The Setting!!! Set in the London backdrop of the West end theater district, I loved all the stage/acting references. They weren't over-done or forced, they were light, perfect, and beautifully executed.Loved this book. It would make the best romantic comedy. So original with the theater backdrop and storyline. Truly a fun, fun read and I look forward to more from the exceedingly talented Lucy Parker5 Beautifully British STARS!!!

The R101 airship was thought to be the model for the future, an amazing design that was ‘as safe as houses. . .except for the millionth chance’. On the night of 4 October 1930 that chance in a million came up however. James Leasor brilliantly reconstructs the conception and crash of this huge ship of the air with compassion for the forty-seven dead, including a cabinet minister – and only six survivors. One of the biggest disasters of British aviation history, which marked the end of commercial airships as a serious form of transport, this book also reads as a textbook of how state attempts to manage commercial ventures so often end in a disaster of one kind or another.

Dobbins As an airship enthusiast since my teenaged years, I have been on the lookout for this book but never was able to locate one in a bookstore or library. The book provides many details on the construction and planning for the R101 as well as operational details. When combined with other sources (such as 'Slide Rule' by Nevil Shute), a fairly complete understanding can be had of all the background and factors which made up this 'political airship'. A worthwhile read.

Dated, and the Treatment Seems Superficial By Stephen Mann This review is for the Kindle edition of this book.I was looking forward to reading this book for some time, and the story is a fascinating one, but the story was told in such a way as to make it a bit of a mish-mash, dodging around in time and space like Dr Who. There was a lot of "reports" from inside the R101 on its last flight that must have been fanciful since the people concerned did not survive the trip to recount the details. Also, I was hoping for a more structured discussion of the engineering involved. The human interest side is all well and good but I'm not intrigued by the ravings of so-called psychics as much as I am in the actual processes involved in building the ship. There was quite a lot of what I wanted, but there could have been so much more.Besides, this is a story that cannot be told absent the details of the building of the R100 in my opinion. The whole raison d'etre of the project was to contrast the design and construction processes of government-overseen vendors versus an entirely private venture. Not bad, I suppose, but not the book I'd hoped it would be. Had I read Leasor's book on the plague and the great fire of London before buying this one, I probably would have given this a miss as I find his dodge-around the story technique distracting and annoying.

By Mark File What a wonderful collection of inspirational stories about how ideas and dreams become amazing realities, making Asheville the wonderful city it is today. It's a must read for anyone that lives in or loves Asheville. And it's a must read for anyone who wants to make their community a better place. Each chapter is a short "case study" that tells the stories such as how downtown Asheville was saved and how seeds of ideas became organizations that help so many. The chapters are quick reads and end appropriately with "what we have learned." These are real stories about some determined people. It will make you smile and encourage you to think big! Thank you Marilyn for documenting these great moments of history.

Today the word “commando” conjures a picture of daring special forces raids, but originally it was the Boer word for a mobile column of fighting men. This is the account of one such fighting man. Aged just seventeen Deneys Reitz, son of the ex-President of the Orange Free State and then State Secretary of the South African Republic, took up his rifle and joined the Boer Army. It was 1899, and tensions between Great Britain and the Transvaal Republic and Orange Free State had reached boiling point. From their initial strikes into Natal to the surge of British troops and the transition to bloody guerrilla warfare, through luck and family ties Reitz was present at most of the major events. Not published until 1929, ‘Commando’ remains one of the most unique and important pieces of literature about the conflict. J. C. Smuts summed it up best in his preface: “Wars pass, but the human soul endures; the interest is not so much in the war as in the human experience behind it. This book tells the simple straightforward story of what the Boer War meant to one participant in it.” Deneys Reitz (1882-1944) was a Boer solider, lawyer, author and politician. In the aftermath of the Second Boer War, he went into exile alongside his father and brothers, spending time in Madagascar before returning to South Africa and studying law. When WWI swept across the globe he fought alongside the British against the Germans, first in Africa and then on the Western Front, rising to command a battalion. 26 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Commando and the Deneys Reitz Trilogy By K. I. Pantling Commando is the first and best known of the Deneys Reitz trilogy. It autobiographically tells the story of his part in the Boer War. He started as the sixteen year old son of a prominent Boer politician and ended with him joining Jan Smutts on his raid on Port Elizabeth. This is a story of guerrilla warfare based on minimal resources, for instance they used to visit the abandoned camp sites of British Columns just to pick up ammunition that the Tommies had dropped. They then used this to attack the very soldiers who had dropped it.However, at the end of the Boer War Reitz was unable to accept British rule and went into exile and this is where the second volume, Trekking On starts. After a disastrous effort at hauling freight by ox cart in Madagascar which nearly cost him is life, Reitz is persuaded by Smutts to return to South Africa where he regains his health and enters local politics. At the outbreak of W.W.II Reitz joins the South African Army and takes part in the putting down of the Maritz rebellion and the campaigns in East Africa. Once the Germans are defeated in Africa he travels to England and , having decided firmly which side he would prefer to be on, joins the British Army as a private. Following a chance meeting with Smutts in London he experiences a dizzying rise in rank and ends the war, after seeing much action as the Colonel of a famous Scottish regiment. The final book in the trilogy, No Outspan, covers Reitz's life in South African politics between the wars and concludes with him as Deputy Prime Minister of South Africa sitting on an advisory panel to Winston Churchill. in London. During this time he is visited by an Englishman who returned to him the Mauser rifle he took from him when Reitz became his prisoner during the Boer War. The last time I heard this rifle is still in the possession of Reitz's son and is regularly shot by him.The Trilogy has been published by Wolfe Publishing as a one volume set in recent years and if you see a copy for sale, grab it!

Vivid personal recounting of first major war of 20th Century By Ian Muldoon Written by a teenager, albeit, a resourceful, fit, intelligent son of a farmer and distinguished South African, it recounts in considerable detail the honourable soldiering on horseback and mule of young Deneys Reitz. His many encounters with the enemy; the harsh weather, difficult landscape, starvation and disease on a guerilla operation that lasted over two years, is testament in part to luck, but also to his survival skills, marksmanship, courage and tenacity. A great read which should be read with some advantage in conjunction with The Boer War by Thomas Pakenham.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. A fascinating account of the 1900 Boer War in South Africa By machoy@iafrica.com Deneys Reitz joined the Boer forces fighting against the English in the 1900 / 02 Boer War in South Africa. While still in his late teens he fought in the famous battles of Spionkop and Nooitgedacht and took part in the seige of Kimberley. His book is an account of the mobile "commando" war and is compelling for its humanity and the historical perspective it gives of a war in which the civilian dead matched those who died in action and a war in which guerrilla tactics were used for the first time.

Have you ever dreamed of being a cowboy? Who of us hasn't? The mere mention of it brings to mind images of boots and saddles, horses and cattle, and being in the great outdoors. This much is true, cowboy stories never cease to hold our attention, and The Vanishing Cowboy is an especially captivating narrative. Weaving a historical text with contemporary photographs taken on location at some of the largest and last-remaining working ranches in the United States, The Vanishing Cowboy is an informative and appealing look at one of America's most iconic figures. But for all his popularity, has the cowboy's time passed? Threatened by urbanization and industrialization, will this folk hero endure the test of time, or is he headed for the sunset?
