Amazon's Book Cover is misleading By lesley9 The nude woman bookcover on Amazon's page seems to imply this is perhaps a racy type book which couldn't be further from the truth. It is a series of anecdotes about a @1900 English fictional couple in their 40s I'd guess who are childless.Very tame short humorous stories told by the husband about his life with his wife, Eliza. The couple are like an English version of George Burns and Gracie Allen.A gentle chuckle of a book. Get it free from MobileRead.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's okay, but it's missing a lot By Obi Wan I got this book as a gift and while I kind of like it, it could use improvement. The pictures are great. But some of the facts about the ballparks are incorrect or misleading. For example, when discussing Baltimore's Memorial Stadium (predecessor to Oriole Park at Camden Yards) the fact sheet indicates the stadium opened in 1922 as Baltimore Stadium. That's kind of accurate, but not quite right. A different stadium opened in 1922 on the same site as Memorial Stadium. The original was completely removed to make way for Memorial Stadium, but this book describes the change as a simple 'renovation'. In reality nothing of the original stadium remained. And the original stadium on that site was known briefly as Baltimore Stadium but the longest running and most common name for the stadium was Municipal Stadium. There's no mention of the Municipal Stadium name at all.The Baltimore Stadium history is the only city that I have intimate knowledge of the facts of the stadium history on. So that's the only section that I can read and see obvious errors and omissions. But I have to assume there are other discrepancies like this scattered throughout the book as it seems unlikely that my particular area of knowledge coincides with the only mistakes in the entire book. The other issue I took with this book is the disparity between different cities. For Baltimore, Boston, and New York for example, there are multiple page spreads showing numerous photos of stadiums from those cities in various states of age and renovation. But for other cities like Anaheim and Oakland there are just 2 pages that barely highlight the history of those parks. And as far as ballparks go, Anaheim has one of the more interesting developmental histories as it's been massively renovated multiple times. It was built as an open outfield design, later closed in so the seating bowl went all the way around the field, then the outfield stands were later demolished to open the stadium back up again as part of a huge renovation that totally transformed the look of the park. But there are no photos or mention of any of those changes. That seems odd for a book titles Then and Now, indicating it's showing old pictures in contract with modern photos.Ultimately the photos that are in the book are really cool. But the photos are the only real draw. I wouldn't read any of the text and assume I really knew the history of a particular stadium.

"All Worth Their Salt: The People of NWI" is a collection of 100 interviews human interest columnist Jeff Manes has written about those hailing from Northwest Indiana. Manes feels Northwest Indiana is or should be the 51st state of the union where those living in nearby Chicago look down upon them as bumpkins and rubes while the remainder of the Hoosier State deems them as aliens and thugs. The folks Manes showcases are mill rats, sod busters, hash slingers, boilermakers, barbers, bricklayers, truckers, teachers, tree huggers, eccentrics and altruists. Sometimes their stories are hysterical and sometimes they are heartbreaking. Sometimes they are both hysterical and heartbreaking within the same interview. The people of Northwest Indiana are salt of the earth. Truly, ordinary people who do extraordinary things.

By Amazon Customer This book by Jeff Manes is a brilliant collection of interviews of a cross section, of a region of Indiana that few people know of. The unique collection tells the story of immigrants, steel mill workers, veterans of World War II, and other later wars, and people who think they are just plain folk without a story to tell, but when the author sits down with them, he brings out what makes them unique. I would recommend this book.

By Amazon Customer Jeff Manes tells the stories of the working heroes of Northwest Indiana, in their own voices, with respect and the honest admiration they deserve. At a time of intense disappointment with the perspectives of too many of our public figures, the words of ordinary Americans, often from the vantage point of years of experience, offer a hope for our country's future.

Rochester, Strood & the Hoo Peninsula From Old Photographs examines a diverse and fascinating area. Rochester, with its medieval castle and cathedral, Tudor buildings and Dickensian associations is a busy and vibrant tourist destination. Across the bridge from the ancient city, but far less well known is the town of Strood. Originally a medieval fishing village, which played host to Knights Templar travelling to the Crusades, it evolved over the centuries into a Victorian industrial and commercial hub. To the north of Strood, extending eastwards to the Thames Estuary is the Hoo Peninsula. Its marshes and isolated villages led the area to be denigrated by travellers who stumbled across it. Brian Joyce and Sophie Miller explore the entire area from Rochester to the Isle of Grain, using a unique collection of photographs, prints and postcards. In doing so, they have at last done justice to parts of Kent that have been neglected by historians for so long.

Perhaps predictably, Rochester occupies much of the book, but the views of old Strood are fascinating and the peninsula out to Grain is well represented. The text accompanying each picture is far more informative than in many books of this kind - all round, this is a wonderful addition to the Kentish bookshelf.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good book for "older" nature lovers! By AB I bought this for my nature loving daughter. She is 10 years old and loves nature, animals, being outside and drawing! This seemed Like a perfect match. When I received the book I peeked inside and saw a few things that really did not apply to her. This book, I believe is made for an adult, not a kid. I did however, give it to her because it is cute, and surely she will enjoy using it. I haven't seen her actually take it outside yet, but I imagine when the weather gets warmer she will overlook the adultish things and learn a thing or two and have fun with it. It really is cute! I would recommend it to a college aged person or young adult who enjoys hiking and camping. Would be a great book to take while hiking the AT.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. For nature types and creative types! By Elizabeth Doodling for Tree Huggers and Nature Lovers is a great book for a family to take on a camping trip or a day of hiking. It reinforces nature and fun while also encouraging creativity to draw a snake or a tent or inventive butterfly species. There’s a learning component, too, with terminology and how to learn the differences between similar animals. The illustrations are fun and cute and don’t take themselves too seriously, which helps if your drawing skills aren’t the best. This book is a great gift for your outsoorsy friends, too. Instead of getting them a foufy water bottle or something else they probably already have, this is a unique way to support their interests with something new and fun. The author is clearly an animal lover and many different kinds are showcased here. I received the entire series of six books as a gift and I love them! They are all very well-made with a high-quality cover that blurs paperback and hardcover.

While I'm not an artist, I enjoyed doodling with the directed activities. Enjoyed the facts and reading about some of the activities. Will have to try out some of the suggested hikes around the world if I'm ever nearby. Would be great to take camping or as a present for someone going. Really enjoyed. Received copy from publisher with hopes of an honest, unbiased review.

The Boids are back in town . . .

The follow-up to the award-winning Extinct Boids, this book features more of the incredible art of cartoonist Ralph Steadman. This time, the focus is not on the birds that are gone, but on the ones that there is still time left to save. These are the 192 critically endangered birds on the IUCN Red List, species such as the Giant Ibis, the Kakapo, the Sumatran Ground-cuckoo and the iconic Spoon-billed Sandpiper--these, along with a number of classic Steadman creations such as the Unsociable Lapwing, are the Nearly-Extinct Boids.

Woids are again by author, conservationist, and filmmaker Ceri Levy. Together, Ceri and Ralph are THE GONZOVATIONISTS.

A portion of the proceeds from this book will go to BirdLife International to help them prevent the Nextinction.

Review

“Steadman's colourful, spiky illustrations of critically endangered birds ... a dazzling aviary of 'nearly extinct' boids. Save them all and make the ink-spattered Steadboid vert happy.” ―Saga

“Hatched from the minds of gonzo cartoonist Ralph Steadman and writer-filmmaker Ceri Levy, “Nextinction” is a visual plea for conservation efforts, depicting nearly 200 birds facing an irrevocable fate: extinction. Levy's humorous but educational text accompanies a spectacle of colorful plumage rendered with Steadman's unique illustrative style, right down to those trademark ink blotches.” ―Boston Globe

"Steadman has a talent for birds, and his scratchy, ink-splattered style works wonders with beaks and feathers. The text is informative and wildly eccentric by turns." ―New Statesman

"Even readers with only a passing interest in birds are sure to come away with a greater appreciation for avian diversity as well as the need to preserve endangered bird species." ―Publishers Weekly

"New book Nextinction is both trippy and poignant.” ―Popular Science

"Quirky commentary in the form of diary entries, emails, and phone conversations between the creators is accompanied by conservation information.” ―Library Journal

"It’s a colorful take on a serious topic.” ―BirdWatching

"The 192 here, in Steadman's trademark trippy style, are alive but endangered, including the giant ibis, the kakapo and the spoon-billed sandpiper. Steadman and Levy have dubbed themselves the ‘gonzovationists.’" ―Associated Press, gift guide

"Ideal for the birder or art enthusiast, this vibrant collection is perfect for holiday giving and even contains a portrait of two turtledoves.” ―Shelf Awareness

"The brilliantly bizarre cartoonist follows up 2012’s Extinct Boids with this compendium of the world’s critically endangered birds." ―Entertainment Weekly

"Levy and Steadman have created a work that is likely to have appeal outside the group of hardcore birders." ―American Birding Association

Founded in 1774 by members of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club (and other organizations), the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry is the only unit in the U.S. Army today that elects its own officers and owns its own armory. By tradition dating back to the 18th century, men who would normally qualify to serve as officers in other units choose instead to enlist in the Troop as privates, forgoing their military pay. Since the American Revolution, the Troop has thus functioned as an ad-hoc leadership school for gentlemen. Of the nearly three thousand men serving in the unit since 1774, seventeen have attained the rank of general. Others have been diplomats, statesmen... and even the third astronaut to walk on the moon. Today, the Troop still reflects its early cultural melding of Quaker humility and cavalier panache. Its members have recently deployed to Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt, and Kuwait.

By Kip Guen The Gentlemen of Gloucester is a fascinating read about the First Troop Philadelphia CityCavalry, the oldest military unit in the United States still in active service. Itreveals a unique part of America's living military history tracing back so many centuries(since 1774) which I am sure not many Americans are aware and of which they should beproud.Mr. Meschter captures well the history as well as having a friendly and personable tone. His book was comfortable to read through. One did not have to struggle with heavy andboring descriptions. It is a great social record that Mr. Meschter has written.Throughout the book, I, as a reader, felt engaged and could familiarize myself andidentify with the persons and events he was describing. Mr. Meschter captured well theups and downs of the human psyche as well as describing his own experiences in beingdeployed.I would recommend this book to anyone. It makes me want to travel to Philadelphia and tothank the Troopers for what they do!

A City's Cavalry, All Our Wars, Heroics & Fun By J Lawrence Grim Jr From Philadelphians fox hunting across the Delaware River in Gloucester Co., NJ, to Washington's only cavalry at battles of Trenton&Princeton, escorting Martha Washington, fighting in every war since, the author, who served in Desert Storm after an education in England and befriending singing German scholar-soldiers, tells the true tale of the nation's oldest, Nov. 17, 1774, mounted military, highlighting battles, combat deaths, heroic service, high leadership and low-jinks comic pranks, bawdy songs and parties executed in distress.. This fast moving account, personalized by the perceptive presence of the bachelor narrator, moves through 240 years of a city's social history, parties for debutants and dignitaries, interwoven with demands of fighting around the globe, where all who join start as privates, regardless of previous military or monetary rank, but rise in rank, particularly in wartime, some to leadership and fame, and one to walk on the moon.

The unknown troop of Philadelphia By Jacob Field Swelling with waspy Main Line pride, Meschter's The Gentlemen of Gloucester proves to be a valuable companion to the study of the oft-ignored historical culture of Philadelphia. The subject, the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, is displayed as it exists in both fantasied tradition and modern military aptitude. It is a look into the possibility of military service that is grounded in something other than the nationalism of the WWII postbellum and the relationships that can form through comedy and strife. Written from the memories of an American, the distinctly German attitude of this book is for those who love ceremony and tradition. This book is equally for those hoping to simply find tales of brotherhood through booze, women and war, bridging the cultural gaps that exist in the dichotomous city of Philadelphia.
