Saddam Hussein ruled Iraq as a dictator for nearly a quarter century before the fall of his regime in 2003. Using the Ba’th party as his organ of meta-control, he built a broad base of support throughout Iraqi state and society. Why did millions participate in his government, parrot his propaganda, and otherwise support his regime when doing so often required betraying their families, communities, and beliefs? Why did the “Husseini Ba’thist” system prove so durable through uprisings, two wars, and United Nations sanctions?

Drawing from a wealth of documents discovered at the Ba’th party’s central headquarters in Baghdad following the US-led invasion in 2003, The Ba’thification of Iraq analyzes how Hussein and the party inculcated loyalty in the population. Through a grand strategy of “Ba’thification,” Faust argues that Hussein mixed classic totalitarian means with distinctly Iraqi methods to transform state, social, and cultural institutions into Ba’thist entities, and the public and private choices Iraqis made into tests of their political loyalty. Focusing not only on ways in which Iraqis obeyed, but also how they resisted, and using comparative examples from Hitler’s Germany and Stalin’s Russia, The Ba’thification of Iraq explores fundamental questions about the roles that ideology and culture, institutions and administrative practices, and rewards and punishments play in any political system.

Review "Faust’s work makes an important contribution to a number of areas, some very specific, some wider, that will leave an imprint on the study of totalitarian dictatorships in the Arab world and even in the world beyond. The complex system through which Saddam and the party endeavored to ‘Ba’thize’ Iraq is presented and analyzed very convincingly and the myriad details create an impressive whole." (Amatzia Baram, Professor of Middle Eastern History and Director of the Center for Iraq Studies, University of Haifa, and author of, among other books, Culture, History, and Ideology in the Formation of Ba’thist Iraq: 1968–1989 and Saddam Husayn and Islam 1968–2003: Ba`thi Iraq from Secularism to Faith)"The research is excellent, the writing is engaging. Faust is particularly good at discussing the mindset, the worldview that the Ba’thist tried to create, and fleshing this out systematically." (Dina Rizk Khoury, Professor of History and International Relations, George Washington University, and author of Iraq in Wartime: Soldiering, Martyrdom, and Remembrance)

THIS SCHMUL PUBLISHING CO. EDITION IS NOT A SCANNED FACSIMILE OF A USED BOOK. It has been carefully typeset and proofread for accuracy and for easier reading by today's readers. Consequently there are no odd characters or missing text. The evangelistic team of Dwight L. Moody and the Methodist Church’s Ira Sankey provided the prototype model for twentieth-century mass evangelism. Early on, Moody recognized the value of working with a song evangelist, setting the emotional and spiritual tone for the sermon. He called it “singing the gospel,” comparing it to “preaching the gospel.” In "My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns" Sankey describes how he had hardly arrived in 1871 to help Moody in Chicago when the Great Fire broke out, consuming Moody’s meeting hall and sending Sankey onto Lake Michigan in a boat to save his own life. Despite the catastrophic setback, the two set about re-establishing their ministry in the city and reaching beyond its environs to enlarge the Kingdom of God. Over the years they crisscrossed America and traveled around the world, winning souls by the thousands. In today’s environment of growing hostility to the Church, it is hard to believe the extent of their influence. It was so great that theatergoers would boo attempts by comedians to lampoon the pair or to blaspheme their revivalist message. Streetcars crowded with singing Christians on their way to revival meetings in large cities would be applauded by passerby on the street. Sankey became world renowned for his singing, and hymnbooks published by him sold out repeatedly. Composers of new gospel songs offered their work to him, and he freely used the new songs to move sinners to the Cross and to build up believers. This is the story, in Sankey’s own words, of the great campaigns, the trials and obstacles, and the victories won in the name of Christ. Here, too, are the back stories to scores of gospel songs and hymns, many of them born out of tribulation— many more, out of blessing.

I have so far read nearly 100 pages and it is still a "cannot put down" book. Thanks to the Netherlands Publishers for putting together a updated edition of this dear old book. I am glad I have the photos in my previous order, that was unfortunately missing about 8 pages, but this book is a great read. Worth paying out a lot of money again. As a long time church musician since the age of 10 (now 57) I have known Ira D. Sankey's Hymns and the Sacred Songs and Solos for many many years.Regs,Geoff Moore Australia

On the other hand, most people in my country know Moody but not Sankey. It is way for me to understand the supporter of Moody. This is a nice book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another excellent book by Haarr. By Brian Lee Knipple Another excellent account of the early days of the war by the author, in this case focusing on operations of the submarines of England, Poland and The Netherlands off northern Europe. The largest part of the book covers British submarines for the simple reason that they performed the overwhelming majority of the the operations in this. A must read for anyone interested in early WW2 naval operations.

An enjoyable story with a great hero By Mignon Mykel Received a copy of the title in exchange for an honest review. This was a good book -- well written with likable characters. Sadly, though, the one thing that resonates the most for me was the overuse of the word "Crazy", whether it was this is crazy, or the thought was crazy, or however the author chose to use the word, it was simply overused. I love the subtle hints about why a book was titled the way it was, but when the single word that is the title is thrown in as often as it was here, I really yearned for a different title...Now that that's done...I actually did enjoy this story. This was a spin-off, sure, but I didn't read JUST GO and I certainly didn't feel lost -- the author gave enough information on Benton for the reader to know what was going on in his life and how he got to the point he was at.Gabby, though... this woman had quite the past, and it took some time to unfold. After a relationship gone sour, Gabby spent more time with the ladies than the men -- it was too easy for her to become attached to men, and she had just as much fun with women and did not get attached. Her girlfriend is in a similar situation -- has her man on the side, but spends most of her time with Gabby. Gabby likes her time with Benton, but she can feel herself maybe wanting a little bit more, and she definitely can feel that he does want more, so she's at a bit of a crossroads.I can say that I didn't necessarily care for Gabby's character. I felt she was flippant and definitely had more 'me, myself, and I' moments, and as such, I wanted something more for Benton. I didn't care for her teenaged attitude she had during some serious moments; while the situations themselves definitely were attention seeking situations, her attitude of them simply had me wanting her to grow up some.Benton was a great father (and oh, the heartstrings that pull surrounding his daughter and being widowed... major brownie points for this man) and he cared deeply for Gabby, so watching him allow Gabby to pull him back and forth hurt my heart a little bit. I did love him, though, for allowing Gabby to open up at her pace... slow as it was.The story, again, was enjoyable. The writing style was simply 'good' in my book, though. Some dialogue felt choppy, some lines felt too 'skim the surface' when they could have delved a bit deeper... but not a bad story!

Once again we were taken on a crazy adventure as always we were not disappointed with this book By Bloggers From Down Under **arc received for honest review**We have been a bit of an M. Dauphin fan for a few books now and when we seen the arc come up for this we just had to have it. Once again we were taken on a crazy adventure as always we were not disappointed with this book.Gabby is a beautiful young lady who has had a crappy up bringing a really s***ty childhood thanks to her mother. Then she was handed another blow that totally broke her. She lost her abusive partner but she also lost he baby boy in a car accident. She is barely living.Shes hanging on with help of medication that she is abusing so she can make it through the day. Gabby has crippling anxiety and a lot of the time she also blacks out.But she is alive.Benton has been dealt some pretty bad stuff even though he had a great childhood with parents he adores he lost his wife in a car accident the day they adopted there baby girl Hannah. He is livingHis a single dadHe adores his daughterHe lives for herThen his life is changed when he meets her……Gabby……They don’t start of dating or the norm couple as Gabby doesn’t do relationships she isn’t tide to one person she never gets close enough to get hurt and let them get hurt. The are just f^/$ friends until Benton give her the ultimatum.“Bad things happen, Gabby. Life is random, but love is true. I’m sticking with you through this, thick and thin. We’ll figure this out together, day by day…”Life is hard for them both there trying to move on but danger and crazy is lurking in the back ground.“I’m so in love with you it hurts physically when I have to think about a world without you.”Do Benton and Gabby get there happy after?Or is the crazy danger around them to strong?“Sometimes life can be crazy, but when you find that one person that makes you better, the crazy doesn’t seem so bad.”That you will have to read to find out!We absolutely loved this book we felt the emotions of the characters we laughed, we cried, we were scared to turn the page.Thank you M. Dauphin for an amazing roller coaster of a ride.“I may be a little crazy, but aren’t we all?”

By Books and Boys This book contains heartache, secrets, and sensitive matters such as abuse and PTSD.WOW I just have to say is “WOW”…. So I know I’m not supposed to say this but I’m going to say it any way this is my first book that I have read by this author and I will defiantly be reading more of her books. So I didn’t realize that this book was a continuous from Just Go where we first met Benton a grieving widowed father and Gabby who has a dark past that she fights every day.It was only supposed to be one night but she couldn’t stop think about him. She hasn’t seen him in months but she keeps reliving that night. She didn’t do relationships didn’t like to be tied to one person she never gets close enough to get hurt or let them get hurt. She wants to keep things casual but he wants more can he change her mind and he is going to get what he wants and that Gabby? He knows she has demons but he just can’t seem to stop thinking about her. He has a lot going on trying to make a happy life for himself and his daughter Hannah. Benton and Gabby have come so far that I loved the way they deal with everyday life it’s so unbelievable. They are surrounded by great family and friends who love them and just want to see them happy and to move on from the past.I love the chemistry between Benton and Gabby it was awesome to see how Benton will do anything he can to help Gabby, even if it means putting everything he's worked for on the line. Will Gabby realize the efforts he has gone to before it's too late? This book is a must read I just simply loved it like I said earlier this book touches on sensitive topics but it shows you; you can overcome anything…

Over some 1200 years, the Romans proved adept at learning from military disaster and this was key to their eventual success and hegemony. Roman Military Disasters covers the most pivotal and decisive defeats, from the Celtic invasion of 390 BC to Alaric's sack of Rome in AD 410. Paul Chrystal details the politics and strategies leading to each conflict, how and why the Romans were defeated, the tactics employed, the generals and the casualties. However, the unique and crucial element of the book is its focus on the aftermath and consequences of defeat and how the lessons learnt enabled the Romans, usually, to bounce back and win.

Roman military « disasters » and « defeats » By JPS This is an interesting and valuable book that lists and presents under the title “Roman military disasters” “sixty or so decisive and significant defeats” ranging from the Gallic invasion in the early fourth century BC and the first sac of Rome to the second sac of Rome in 410 AD by Alaric. Alongside the better known disasters, such as Cannae, Carrhae, Teutoburg Forest or Adrianople, there are also a number of lesser known ones, including some – such as Arausio against the Cimbri and Teutones – were the Romans suffered horrendous losses that exceeded some of the better known events. I had however three sets of reservations with this book, hence the three star rating.A first set of problems is about the book’s scope. While the author quotes the Oxford Concise Dictionary definition of a disaster as “a great or sudden misfortune, a complete failure, a person or enterprise ending in failure”, some of the events selected are in fact not military disasters in the strict sense of the term. For instance, the Roman failure to force a river crossing in 171 BC against the Macedonians of King Perseus was certainly a defeat, and a rather bloody one since the Romans lost some 3000 men against (allegedly) a few dozen. However, it was certainly not “a disaster of the first magnitude for the Romans”, contrary to the author’s assertion. Also questionable is the author’s choice of the Boudica’s revolt among the military disasters. The revolt ended with the Romans crushing of the insurrection in a decisive battle. Moreover, the IX Hispana which had attempted to rescue the Roman colony of modern Colchester was defeated, but the legion was not wiped out and the (nevertheless huge) destructions and loss of human life mainly affected civilians, whether Romans or the (numerous) Britons from other tribes that were living in or around the destroyed cities. Also a bit odd is the listing of the sac of Rome by Alaric as a “military disaster”. It certainly was a political and human disaster, but for both the Romans, because of the symbol and because they were on “the receiving end”, and for Alaric and his Goths, because there was no chance they would get what they wanted once they had used (and lost) their bargaining counter. Some choices of military disasters are even more curious. This is the case of the chapter titled “Doom monster – Cleopatra VII”. A first problem here is that the civil wars opposing the Roman warlords were not caused by Cleopatra. To be more precise, the opposition between Mark Antony and Octavius, just like the opposition between Caesar and the so-called Republicans (the high-born Senators who were in fact defending their “right” to share power) pre-existed Cleopatra and the Civil Wars would have taken place without her. A second problem is that only these Civil Wars have been selected as “military disasters” and rate a special chapter, and no others, although all of them were rather “disastrous” in terms of military losses if only because every casualty would be a Roman soldier and because, given the losses and disruptions, they clearly weakened the Empire.Another curious choice is the selection of the Theban Legion Massacre that took in AD 286 as a “military disaster”. This little known episode was about a Legion initially recruited in Egypt and made up of Christians. The Legion was purged when in Gaul by Emperor Maximian for refusing “to comply with Emperor worship” which was both insubordination (refusal to obey orders) and treason. While the story is certainly an interesting one, I am not sure that this qualifies as a “military disaster”. Finally, there is at least one campaign, that of Julian in 363 AD, which could have rated as a military disaster. It is not included, despite the loss of about a third of the Roman expeditionary force, the death of the Emperor in battle and a rather disastrous peace that his successor had to agree too in order to save the remaining two-thirds of the force. In fact, rather than just “military disasters”, it seems that the author has selected just about any significant reverse and defeat that he could find, although by only choosing some civil wars without singling out others, he may have been somewhat selective and perhaps not entirely consistent.A second - and related – issue is that the author seems to have in fact tried to summarise the military history of Roman and its Empire through its military reverses, defeats and disasters. This is an interesting and a somewhat original approach even if another book on military disasters during the Roman Republic has already been published. It does however raise a couple of issues. One is that the author does not have enough space to cover the subject. Another consequence is that while the selected events are generally well or at least adequately described, the summaries between these events tend to be short, sometimes superficial and may even contain inaccuracies or simplifications as the author tries to “cut corners”.The third issue is the number of incorrect statements that are included, probably because the book has been poorly edited. It is, for instance, quite incorrect to state that the First Punic War was only the second time that Rome had to fight against a non-Italian enemy, with the Gauls being the first. This is clearly a slip in editing, since the author also describes the wars against Pyrrhus, the Hellenistic King of Epirus. It is also incorrect to state that Crete or Marseilles were part of the Carthaginian Empire. Both were Greek and rivals/enemies of Carthage. There are quite a few more statements such as these, together with a few repetitions and typos which tend to show that, unfortunately for the author, the editing of this book is not among its strongest points.

The number is less surprising when the thousand year plus time frame of Rome is considered. The other thing to bear in mind is that some stages of Rome’s history are less well covered by surviving sources so there are gaps and scant details. Also, it is not comprehensive in the sense that it covers every disaster. The loss of 21st Rapax in 92AD or the damage to the army in Britain in the early 2nd century is not mentioned for instance but these events are known of only in fragments and not much could really be added I suppose. There were still plenty of stories new to me. The famous disasters are covered in some depth but there are reasonable write ups for lesser and (to me) completely unknown battles. There is a heap of small nuggets of information, which makes for a very informative whole. There’s a couple of confusing passages and some minor spelling mistakes not picked up by the spell-checker but otherwise it is very competently put together. There’s a few maps and diagrams but the great bulk is text, which suited me. It’s more a book for the generally interested reader, rather than someone researching specific campaigns or battles. One goal of the book was to reveal how the Roman’s learned from their defeats. I don’t think this is fully addressed but the resilience of the Romans is made very clear.I quite enjoyed reading this book. It left me knowing more than I started with and wanting to learn even more!
