A pioneering treatise that aroused great controversy when it was first published in 1725, Vico's New Science is acknowledged today to be one of the few works of authentic genius in the history of social theory. It represents the most ambitious attempt before Comte at comprehensive science of human society and the most profound analysis of the class struggle prior to Marx.

The New Science of Giambattista Vico, by Giambattista Vico

Review

"This new edition of the famous Bergin and Fisch translation of Vico's Scienza nuova, originally published in 1948 and reissued in a revised edition in 1968, includes a translation of a piece of Vico’s work called the Practica . . . . It is a great advantage to have [the “Practic of the New Science"] reprinted with the text of the New Science as it offers some of Vico’s views on the application of his science. . . . Cornell University Press is to be congratulated for . . . this new full edition.”―Review of Metaphysics

Language Notes Text: English, Italian (translation)

About the Author Although Vico (1668-1744) lived his whole life as an obscure academic in Naples, his New Science is an astonishingly ambitious attempt to decode the history, mythology and law of the ancient world.

By Timothy Harfield *** IMPORTANT ***This review is intended as a criticism, NOT of the Bergin and Fisch translation or of Vico's master work as a whole, but rather ONLY of the Penguin Edition of the New Science. It has come to my attention that my comments have been attached to BOTH the Penguin edition and the classic translation by Bergin and Fisch. This is an Amazon problem, and one that I would ask the reader to bear in mind. Thank you to commentators on this review for bringing this problem to my attention.--Professor Donald Phillip Verene, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Metaphysics and Moral Philosophy at Emory University, and Director of the Institute for Vico Studies has written a devastating review of the Penguin translation (by David Marsh) and its introduction (by Anthony Grafton), both or which are fraught with egregious errors. These errors betray an inattention to Vico's life and writing as a whole, as well as a near-total ignorance of the field of Vico studies which has blossomed in the 20th century. Although this edition is attractive on account of its price, it was an unnecessary endeavor (Isaiah Berlin hailed the Bergin and Fisch edition as exceptional, and a role model for translation practice in general), a botched effort that is likely to do more harm to Vico's reputation in the English-speaking world than good. For those with a serious interest in Vico, the Penguin Edition of the New Science should be absolutely avoided. Instead, purchase The New Science of Giambattista Vico: Unabridged Translation of the Third Edition (1744) with the Addition of Practic of the New Science (Cornell Paperbacks)For the fulltext of Verene's thorough review and criticism of Marsh's translation, please see Verene, Donald Phillip, "Critical Discussion on Translating Vico: The Penguin Classics Edition of the New Science," In New Vico Studies, Vol 17, 1999, pp. 85 - 107.

It is an unorthodox view of history that became the source of inspiration to a diverse group of scholars such as Karl Marx, James Joyce and Marshall McLuhan. It was my reading of McLuhan that caused me to seek out Vico, and therefore, read this book.If you have an interest in words and entomology, this is a book for you. Vico looks for the origin of civilization in the origin of words, and proposes theories that provoke thoughtful reflection. McLuhan used Vico to chart the future of civilization, as did Joyce. It is impossible to sum-up this book in a few words, and it is difficult to explain why it is worth reading, but nonetheless, I recommend it to those of you who have stumbled upon it here. If you've gotten to this page, of the 800 million pages in cyberspace, then you are probably someone who should read Vico.If you've never read Vico before, I highly recommend his autobiography, which contains a scholarly overview of Vico and his thought. It is a slimmer volume than this one, and could help you decide to read-on.

Vico mines history in his own unique method and style to compose a theory of civilizations, or what today is called the Philosophy of History.Several people asked where Vico is taught/who studies Vico. The Graduate Institute at St. John's College (Great Books program) studies Vico at length in the History segment, which is really Philosophy of History. The Great Books curriculum designers thought Vico was worth reading, and they were right. Also, the late philosopher Eric Voegelin wrote an essay in "Order and History" singling out Vico's work and advocating his "New Science." At Emory University Donald Philip Verene runs the Institute for Vico studies. There are also many collections of essays on Vico by both American and European scholars. St. John's College library in Annapolis contains a good number of them.Vico writes in numbered axioms and conclusions so he can refer to ideas numerically and connect them. The numbered ideas are not necessarily sequential but are connected around themes. There is a definite ending (in the Conclusion) regarding the culmination of civilization, which is what you want to get to, but without understanding how you got there it is significantly more hollow, so at least understand the trajectory of the earlier chapters first. To avoid getting bogged down or disoriented I would suggest doing the reading sequence listed on the St. John's College Grad Institute website. You can download the Graduate Reading List for History free. Remember to get to the end, otherwise you missed the big picture.

This story delves into the Hierarchy of the very secret vampire world. This is a sexy love story with a happy ever after ending. I would like to thank the author for a book so well edited. I didn't notice any errors at all and it adds so much to the reading enjoyment.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Vampire intrigue By blingsupreme I generally don't care for vampire stories, but this was well written and very interesting. It has great characters, romance and lots of intrigue. I got an ARC in exchange for an honest evaluation, and I highly recommend this story to lovers of this genre. I plan to read more stories from this author.

Goes Downhill after Chapter 4 By Valley Armchair Good first few chapters (a sample's worth) with interesting plot start and characters, but soon it evolves into one boring fight scene after another with wooden characters plus repetitive dialogue and descriptions. There is a desperate need for editing, with numerous examples of incorrect word choice/usage, such as "not with terror but with agape" and contradictory phrases such as when "the guards visibly relaxed... And Leah sensed their fear."I had to laugh when one description of Damien noted that "his cotton shirt was open at the neck, defining his scapula," which must have meant he had his shirt on backwards and pulled down to reveal only one of his shoulder blades, which I've never come read before as being a particularly sexy male body part, ha.

He often forgets he's a cyborg. All she sees in the mirror is a killing machine. Marine Lance Corporal Eric Anderson tended to forget he was cyborg. Hell--most of the time he didn't give being mostly a military machine any thought. He'd always lived by his human gut, not his logic chip, so thinking out of the cybernetic box was just how he worked. Then he met her--Evelyn 489--a female cyborg so erratically dangerous she has to be kept locked away. Angry, violent, and full of deadly intentions, Evelyn 489 epitomizes every fear about cyber scientists that ever kept him awake at night. Some warped cyber scientist stripped away her real identity to create the perfect companion. Until he gave into his urge to be her superhero, the woman didn't even know she used to be Army Captain Lucille Evelyn Pennington. Though Peyton is full of doubts, Eric is compelled to help Kyra and Nero restore the woman who once liked to be called Lucy. It doesn't help his cause that several people seem determined to kill her.

At first I did not want to read this series because how romantic could it be with two machines touching metal and kissing well metal. Donna McDonald 's Eric 754 is about people in the military who volunteered over ten years ago to have parts of themselves replaced by machine in order to win the war which they did. They became known as enhanced machine/humans or cyborgs. So they are not metal machines kissing or making love. They are people who are wired like machines.Well after the war was over they were programmed to become husbands and wives for a high price given to the government and the scientists who sold them as slaves. They were not given a military discharge or metals of honor. They were abused and sold as companions. The original programer knew nothing about how her program was used after the war but when she found out, she resolved to restore as many cyborgs to their original selves as humanly possible. Her name is Kyra and her love story is in Peyton 313.Thanks to Kyra most of the male cyborgs regained their humanity and one female cyborg Rachael. Lucille also known as Lucy or Evelyn 489 is the most abused cyborg they found and Eric 754 falls for her and tries to help her by finding her human name. When he does her program kicks in and she becomes a cyborg companion to a cyborg. He constantly tries to find her human side and treats her respectfully. This is their love story, and it is filled with drama because she has a bomb inside of her that can explode at anytime. This story has scientists, long lasting military friends, people, A1 bots, and cyborgs working together to restore cyborg military people to their original selves. It also has hot love scenes, angry cursing and some funny parts too. Don't forget that this is a love story amid this high drama.Read this book because if like syfy then this is right up your alley. Then you can read about the other cyborgs. They all begin with a name then a number by Donna McDonald.

By Janet Overstreet When Eric 754 (a cyborg) follows his gut feelings to protect Lucy (female cyborg, Evelyn 489) then you know something outside of the “rules” is bound to happen. Most of the time, Eric doesn’t even think of himself as being a cyborg. Lucy is a strong female, that deep down inside still retains some of her humanity, regardless of all the trial experiments she has been through. I like that the story had a unique different path of the relationship between these two characters, but also stayed true to the overall theme of the series. I love the way Donna can tell a story, it captures the imagination from start to finish.

By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Title: Eric 754Series: Cyborgs: Mankind RedefinedDesignation: Book Four of Series, Standalone, No CliffhangerAuthor: Donna McDonaldMy Rating: FIVE DIVINELY ENTERTAINING STARS*****Wow! I love, love, love it! Eric 754 is the fourth release in the riveting Cyborgs: Mankind Redefined series by Donna McDonald and she totally knocked it out of the park - again! I discovered Donna McDonald last year and became a diehard fan after reading Peyton 313, the first release in this amazing series. I adore a sexy romance, fall head over heels for anything with suspense or intrigue, and truly love an intelligent science fiction/fantasy tale but combine those elements into one fabulous read and I'm in heaven, especially when they're well done and Donna McDonald is definitely a master of her trade. McDonald is not only a skilled storyteller with a boundless imagination but she's also a wonderfully gifted wordsmith whose talent never ceases to amaze me. Although this is the third book of the series, it can most definitely be read as a standalone and does NOT end in an actual cliffhanger but there is a common underlying premise and conflict with recurring characters and continuing storyline that run throughout the entire series. The author does a remarkable job of including ample backstory so that each book can be enjoyed as a standalone read. However, having said that, I would highly recommend reading at least the first book since it establishes the premise and sets the stage for each of the future releases in the series. The first story featured brilliant cyber-scientist and cyborg code co-creator Dr Kyra Winters and dashing Marine Captain Peyton Elliot aka Cyborg Peyton 313 who both reappear in each subsequent release along with several other characters who were also introduced in the first book. The sexy cyborg heroes featured in this series are a combination of genetically and bionically engineered super soldiers who were cybernetically imprisoned, reprogrammed, enslaved and sold as 'Cyber Husbands' after aiding the United Coalition of Nations to end a near apocalyptic global war. Dr Winters and her team are now working diligently to rescue, reprogram and restore the humanity of all the cyborgs whose freedom, memories and lives were stolen by Norton Industries acting under the purview of the UCN. But their efforts are being sabotaged by a malevolent unknown entity known only as Creator Omega who continues to covertly engineer the failure of Dr Winter's campaign to free the cyborgs and prevent their reintegration back into society. And unfortunately, the lies, deceit and heinous machinations are, surprisingly, even more complex than they could ever suspect. Each book in the series deals with a different restored cyborg finding true love while attempting to recover their humanity and regain a semblance of balance in their new life. Each couple do get their happy ending but all of the books follow a unified underlying plot in which an unknown enemy wants their efforts to fail. In this story, we follow beautiful former Army Captain Lucille Evelyn Pennington aka Cyborg Evelyn 489, and now restored former Marine Lance Corporal Eric Anderson aka Cyborg Eric 754. I fell in love with Eric when he was introduced in an earlier book and was over the moon when I learned he would have his own story and even more excited after discovering he would be paired with the female cyborg who up until now, the team had been unable to identify other than just Evelyn 489. Both of these characters quickly worked their way into my heart and have become my favorite characters to date. Yes, I know I say the same thing every time, but it's true. I've loved all four of these books but this one really tugged on my heartstrings and yanked hard. I laughed, I sobbed, I cried, I shook my fists in anger at the injustice and was completely and totally captivated! But I digress, let's talk about this book. I found this story to be well researched, well crafted, well executed and exceptionally well written and edited. The language, terminology and science is intelligent, imaginative yet realistic. The characters are well developed, engaging, endearing and surprisingly, at times, laugh out loud funny. They explode from the pages, come to life in my mind and completely stole my heart. I cried for them, empathized with them and sometimes, laughed with them. I became completely vested in their well-being, their survival and most of all, their happiness. I especially loved the added elements of romance, mystery, intrigue and suspense that are brilliantly interwoven into the story. The dialogue is smart, witty and flows effortlessly. And the premise for this entire series is a stroke of genius. We all know that real life research and inventions often mimic science fiction, and although the general public may not be aware, bionics and AIs do already exist so who knows what they future may hold! The two protagonists are devilishly handsome former Marine Lance Corporal Eric Anderson aka Cyborg Eric 754 and beautiful but deadly former Army Captain Lucille 'Lucy Hellcat' Evelyn Pennington aka Evelyn 489. These two characters play off each other brilliantly and their sexual chemistry is smokin' hot. Their interaction is seductive and arousing but their relationship is also so much more and I don't mean just more sex. It's sexy without the nonstop sex, if that makes any sense. Don't get me wrong, there are some steamy sex scenes but these two characters start out with an explosive connection, quite literally, and then gradually progress to a very tenuous relationship of sorts where Lucy identifies Eric as the owner of her contract, but despite the odds, they form a strong, meaningful and trusting connection that supersedes mere physical attraction. Eric and Lucy may both be cyborgs but their love story is the most heart-wrenching, heartwarming and human of any of the couples to date. The relationship and situation with the couple in each book is different, unique and not cut from the same cookie cutter mold so it always keeps me on my toes, never knowing what to expect. I love that about this series! Eric and Lucy Hellcat's relationship doesn't start out as instant attraction and OMG, you're my soulmate. In fact, it's quite the opposite with these two unlikely lovers, but I still loved it and just as in the first three books, I found myself on the edge of my seat, glued to every page with my heart pounding and gasping for my next breath. I was immediately drawn into this story, completely immersed, happily lost in a wonderful new adventure with hours passing as minutes and completely unaware of the passage of time.. It was utter perfection!Former Marine Lance Corporal Eric Anderson aka Eric 754 often forgets he's even a cyborg. He's only one of two surviving restored cyborgs who was cybernetically double wired with dual processors. Eric has since been successfully freed and restored by his former commanding officer, Captain Peyton Elliot, and his genius wife scientist and original co-creator of the Cyborg program, Dr Kyra Winters. He's currently working as part of their team to recover, free and restore more of his fellow comrades. They currently have one poor soul imprisoned in a basement bunker at Norton Industries but the chances of survival or restoration are slim. Eric regards Evelyn 489 as a dangerous and volatile weapon but he also sees her as a complete mystery that needs to be solved, and poor Evelyn 489 is literally a disaster waiting to happen. They don't even know her human identity but they do know she has been seriously abused and used as a science experiment by the evil original creator Dr Jackson Channing and his protege, Dr Bradley Smith. She had been weaponized with highly dangerous experimental technology including a bomb, and then programmed into a New World Companion to serve the needs of her master, which was basically an unwilling sex slave. When Eric is finally allowed to meet Evelyn 489, he feels an immediate connection along with an inexplicable need to discover her true identity and help her reclaim her human life, or at least as much of it as possible under the circumstances. And those circumstances had been devastating. This woman had suffered horrible abuse and extreme experimentation at the hands of her captors. She had initially volunteered to be part of the program to help win the war after her husband created suicide but the things that had been done to her went far beyond her original agreement. Unfortunately, the one thing Eric had never anticipated was falling head or heels in love with the beautiful highly unstable cyborg. But can she be saved or will she be the death of them all??? We'll see!If you love cyborg science fiction, romantic suspense, spine-tingling intrigue and thrilling adventure, then I highly recommend trying this remarkable series. It's divinely entertaining! What did I love about this story? Everything! What didn't I like? Not a darn thing! Would I recommend this book? You bet and I am! Will I read this author again? Absolutely! Just as soon as I can one-click the next book in the series. It's bloody brilliant!!! Currently, this is the last book available in this series. I have no idea if McDonald has any plans for future releases in this particular series but I certainly hope it's a consideration. If so, I'll be at the front of the line waiting to purchase my copy! Regardless, I can hardly wait to see what adventure Ms McDonald has in store for her readers next!

The affinities between Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) and Edvard Munch (1863–1944) have long been noted, yet a formal comparative study of the two artists has never been made. Known for emotionally charged paintings, deeply personal and innovative styles, and dramatic lives of hardship, both Van Gogh and Munch fundamentally shaped the modern art movement in late-19th-century Europe. Munch:Van Gogh is the first publication to compare these two infamous and influential artists side by side, offering a groundbreaking critical examination of the parallels between their oeuvres and artistic ambitions. Gorgeously illustrated, the book offers a close consideration of the artists’ uses of color, stylization, brushwork, and unconventional compositions in both paintings and drawings. The authors also draw connections between Van Gogh’s and Munch’s evocative and poignant correspondence with family and friends, allowing readers to understand more profoundly the essence of their art.

In No Depression in Heaven, Alison Collis Greene demonstrates how the Great Depression and New Deal transformed the relationship between church and state. Grounded in Memphis and the Delta, this book traces the collapse of voluntarism, the link between southern religion and the New Deal, and the gradual alienation of conservative Christianity from the state. At the start of the Great Depression, churches and voluntary societies provided the only significant source of aid for those in need in the South. Limited in scope, divided by race, and designed to control the needy as much as to support them, religious aid collapsed under the burden of need in the early 1930s. Hungry, homeless, and out-of-work Americans found that they had nowhere to turn at the most desolate moment of their lives.Religious leaders joined a chorus of pleas for federal intervention in the crisis and a permanent social safety net. They celebrated the New Deal as a religious triumph. Yet some complained that Franklin Roosevelt cut the churches out of his programs and lamented their lost moral authority. Still others found new opportunities within the New Deal. By the late 1930s, the pattern was set for decades of religious and political realignment.More than a study of religion and politics, No Depression in Heaven uncovers the stories of men and women who endured the Depression and sought in their religious worlds the spiritual resources to endure material deprivation. Its characters are rich and poor, black and white, mobile sharecroppers and wealthy reformers, enamored of the federal government and appalled by it. Woven into this story of political and social transformation are stories of southern men and women who faced the greatest economic disaster of the twentieth century and tried to build a better world than the one they inhabited.

No Depression in Heaven: The Great Depression, the New Deal, and the Transformation of Religion in the Delta, by Alison Collis Greene

Review "No Depression in Heaven is a compelling and beautifully written story of the ways in which poverty, welfare, God, and Roosevelt shaped Americans' lives in the 1930s. Greene has provided an excellent history based on first-rate research that speaks in important ways to the present as much as to the past." --Matthew Avery Sutton, author of American Apocalypse: A History of Modern Evangelicalism

"While historians have long understood the Great Depression as a decade of political and economic upheaval, Alison Collis Greene brilliantly demonstrates that it sparked a revolution in American religion too. With deeply grounded research and soaring prose, No Depression in Heaven forces us to rethink the tangled relationship between religion and politics in modern American history in innovative and exciting ways." --Kevin M. Kruse, author of One Nation Under God: How Corporate America Invented Christian America

"In her eloquent, incisive, and ultimately heart-breaking book, Alison Greene captures not only the excruciating local effects of the Great Depression, but the powerlessness of local religious institutions in the face of such extreme want. Her work shows us, in elegant prose, that the intensely local consequences of economic collapse in the American south, nourished by racism and myths of self-determination, grew to reshape both the nation and its memories of itself in crisis. No Depression in Heaven provides historians of religion in America an exemplary model for making sense of this devastating period in American history." --Jonathan H. Ebel, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

"A gifted historian with a novelist's ear, Alison Greene discerns the texture of lived experience in the most recalcitrant sources. No Depression in Heaven is a masterful work of social history. Equally attentive to the intimate and the political, Greene shows how deeply fraught the responses of the people of the Delta were to the upheavals and transformations of the 1930s. She also demonstrates that religious history at its best is about how people fight, often in ways that are destructive to themselves and others, to make lives for themselves on the razor edge of change." --Robert A. Orsi, Northwestern University

"This book combines powerful stories and brilliant historical analysis to reveal an important chapter in the reconfiguration of church-state relationships. A vital and important book." -Choice

About the Author Alison Collis Greene is Assistant Professor of History at Mississippi State University.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very Informative study about the Great Depression, and the role that The Church played. By Maureen An exceptionally well researched study, into the role that the The Church played during the Great Depression in the US, particularly in Southern rural society. Very informative yet heart-rending accounts of people living in dire poverty. There are incidents in this book that shame humanity, and it shows how The Church failed to alleviate suffering for those most in need. Recommended for those with an interest in the Great Depression, the history of religion, and Southern history in particular. The author has done a great job in bringing all these details together to produce this hugely comprehensive study.* Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC*

Millard Along with Howard Zinn's ,A Peoples History of the United States, we get a clear picture of dixiefication of american politics as a fear and loathing of governments's support for the destitute, as this support displaced religion.

This edition gives the essay due attention, but the document teaches little about playwriting(as Lope intended, not wanting more competition!)
