Henry David Thoreau (born David Henry Thoreau; July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) is one of America’s most famous authors and poets, and one of the prominent writers of the Transcendentalist Era in the mid-19th century. Along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, who was a mentor of sorts to Thoreau, the two of them produced large bodies of work that formed the backbone of Transcendentalism. Thoreau in particular was an ardent abolitionist, naturalist, historian, philosopher, and also laid the groundwork for peaceful civil disobedience movements across the world in moral opposition to unjust states.Thoreau’s most famous work is Walden, which he wrote after living on Walden Pond outside Concord, Massachusetts for over 2 years. Thoreau in particular took a keen interest in the idea of getting in touch with nature, writing in Walden, “Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind."

An Excursion to Canada, by Henry David Thoreau

About the Author Henry David Thoreau was an American author, poet, and philosopher, who is best known for his works Waldena treatise about living in concert with the natural worldand Civil Disobedience, in which he espoused the need to morally resist the actions of an unjust state. Thoreau s work heavily reflects the ideologies of the American transcendentalists, and he has long been considered a leading figure in the movement along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, Bronson Alcott, and, at first, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who changed his views later in life). In addition to his writing, which totaled more than twenty volumes, Thoreau was an active abolitionist, and lectured regularly against the Fugitive Slave Law. Thoreau died in 1862, and is buried along with Louisa May Alcott, Ellery Channing, and other notable Americans in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.

Accompanying a major exhibition, this stunning survey and important monograph highlights more than two decades’ worth of Lisa Yuskavage’s brilliant and controversial paintings. Internationally acclaimed American painter Lisa Yuskavage is known for her seductive yet unsettling work, in which cartoony, vulgar, angelic young nymphs are cast within fantastical landscapes or theatrical interiors. In this dazzling monograph she presents the confrontational imagery, luscious paint, and technical virtuosity that are her signature, blurring the boundaries between high art’s classic female nudes and their naughty, soft-porn counterparts. This comprehensive new volume offers a rich overview of the artist’s work with interpretive essays by leading art historians and an interview with the artist. This will be the definitive book on this important artist.

Review "It's hard to alight on a response to Lisa Yuskavage's paintings. . . her typologies of formal painting conventions and of the consumerized female body are inseparable from one another, and their interactions produce an ever-increasing complexity: trapped between the familiar and the newly estranged, you keep looping from admiration to irritation, innocent pleasure to revulsion." -BOOKFORUM

Best Ebook North Wales, Llandudno, and Snowdonia: What to See, Where to Go, What to Do, by Gary McKraken

A fond and semi-autobiographical look at some of the main tourist attractions and activities in North Wales, Llandudno, and Snowdonia based around my experiences of visiting each and every one of those I have featured in this audiobook. Their main features, their history, travel information, and more.

I have visited North Wales many times throughout my life starting with family holidays to Llandudno in the 1970s when I was quite young. The whole region is wonderful. Beautiful, historic, traditional, and with many wonderful things to see and do.

My memories of those old family holidays and the many subsequent visits have given me the inspiration to put this semi-autobiographical book together, so I can introduce you to the marvelous North Wales region and what a great place it is to visit for a holiday. Or perhaps you are interested in the history of the region. I cover both aspects - travel and history - inside.

I have written about my favourite places to visit in North Wales, Llandudno and Snowdonia, so you get something of a look back in time to what Llandudno, in particular, looked like back then.

Inside the book, you have my take on many of the excellent sights in the region based on my own visits to Llandudno itself and then venturing out to other places such as Anglesey, Mount Snowdon, Portmeirion, the slate mines, and many more.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Genealogy Of The Ainsworth Families In America (1894) By Peggy J. I don't expect a book of genealogy to be fascinating reading, front to back. I bought it mainly because it includes at least one of my ancestors, Sabin Ainsworth, who married Judith Martin. When I looked online it gave a list of the people who married into the Ainsworth family. However, the book stops after the genealogies and does not include about 45 pages that are shown on Amazon. Ainsworth immigrants of the 19th century, Miscellaneous Notes, Additions and Corrections, The Index of the First Names of Ainsworths and the index to the full names of persons connected by marriage are all missing. But what it does have is very good.

Good Hunting Book For Some By arizona4570 This book is filled with page after page of hunting and killing, so if you are anti-hunting do yourself a favor and don't read it. I hunt a lot and I had to think back to what it was like back in the 1880s and 1890s, when the hunters shot a lot of game to sell the hides, teeth and tusks to pay for their safari. Back then game was unlimited and no one thought the great herds would ever depleted. Thankfully strict game laws were established and controlled hunting has kept the herds at sustainable levels. The only blights on that picture are the on going civil wars and poaching. The rebels kill elephants and sell the ivory to fund their activities.Getting back to the book, if you'd like to experience what hunting was like in the days of vast herds of game thsi will take you that trip.

He wounds an animal but doesn't always bother to follow it up, others he kills when he seems to already have a sufficiency for his needs. The writing is lacking in excitement, even thrilling encounters are put in blah, straightforward language with Victorian phrasing & sentence structure which can be dreary to read. [Much like Sir Samuel Baker's accounts of his exploits] Neither of them is a Ruark or Capstick!Still, the price was reasonable so if the subject matter interests you, go for it.

Hunting expectations & outcomes beyond belief from today's viewpoint. Nearly every second animal lost, wounded because old fashioned black powder elephant guns frequently take 20 to 35 shots to kill one elephant and some times 3 to 5 shots just to kill an antelope.

Pain and passion: The original and intimate art of Mexico’s most famous female painter   The arresting pictures of Frida Kahlo (1907–54) were in many ways expressions of trauma. Through a near-fatal road accident at the age of 18, failing health, a turbulent marriage, miscarriage and childlessness, she transformed the afflictions into revolutionary art.In literal or metaphorical self-portraiture, Kahlo looks out at the viewer with an audacious glare, rejecting her destiny as a passive victim and rather intertwining expressions of her experience into a hybrid surreal-real language of living: hair, roots, veins, vines, tendrils and fallopian tubes. Many of her works also explore the Communist political ideals which Kahlo shared with Rivera. The artist described her paintings as “the most sincere and real thing that I could do in order to express what I felt inside and outside of myself.”This book introduces a rich body of Kahlo’s work to explore her unremitting determination as an artist, and her significance as a painter, feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American culture.   About the Series:Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Art series features:

  • a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance
  • a concise biography
  • approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions

Not to sound shallow but the color reproductions and the photos are worth the purchase price on their own. However knowing what they are trying to portray always ads that extra meaning. No matter what book or movie you buy this is an added must to your library and a different look at the life and times of Freda.

At the end there is a summary grouped by morning, mid day, and evening. There are also hints about better vantage points than the most obvoous. I am puzzled why the pictures are only about 2 inches wide instead of page width. They do give an idea of what the scene is like.
