Finally, an American Environmental History for everyone! After years of teaching Environmental History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst without a textbook, Dan Allosso decided to take matters into his own hands. The result is a concise, comprehensive survey covering the material from Dan's undergraduate course in a format that will appeal to anyone interested in how we got where we are today. What do people say about the class? "This was my first semester and this course has created an incredible first impression. If all of the courses are this good, I am going to really enjoy my time here. The course has completely changed the way I look at the world." (Student in 2014 class) "One of the few classes I'm really sad is ending, the subject matter is fascinating and Dan is a great guide to it. His approach should be required of all students as it teaches an appreciation for a newer and better way of living." (Student in 2014 class) "Allosso's lectures are fantastic. The best I have ever had. So impressed. The material is always extremely interesting and well-presented." (Student in 2015 class) "It is just a perfect course that I think should be mandatory if we want to save our planet and live responsibly." (Student in 2015 class) Beginning in prehistory and concluding in the present, American Environmental History explores the ways the environment has affected the choices that became our history, and how our choices affected the environment. The dynamic relationship between people and the world around them is missing from mainstream history. Putting the environment back into history helps us make sense of the past, which will help guide us toward a better future.

Accessible to a broad audience By CJF The field of environmental history is littered with interesting studies that simply aren't approachable for most beginners. Allosso corrects this problem in the first part of his thoughtful and concisely written textbook. Beginning with the Ice Age, he walks the reader through the important role that agriculture and the environment played in the development and evolution of the earliest North American societies. Turning next to European expansion, Allosso illustrates how human beings both act and are acted upon by a variety of factors in the environment. Worth note is his vivid description of the important role that biological factors played in the development and evolution of the American colonies. Indeed, he carefully traces how the spread of disease was the critical factor allowing Europeans to establish the American colonies and consolidate their control over abundant resources that drove the famous triangle trade.Perhaps just as important, this textbook illustrates the central role that the environment played as catalyst to historical events, like the American Revolution. For Allosso, the creation and evolution of the United States of America is inextricably linked to the acquisition of resources and development of land. He reminds us, for example, that one of the driving factors which doomed the Articles of Confederation was a struggle between various states for control of western lands. Ultimately, the author makes a convincing case that when we focus on the most important events, themes, and factors that shaped American history between 1776 and the coming of the Civil War in 1860, we can not understand them without recognizing the complicated relationship between human beings and the environment. The Northwest Ordinance, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Transportation and Commercial Revolutions, sectionalism, the Trail of Tears, and even the whole notion of American exceptionalism simply cannot be understood without recognizing that the environment has shaped politics, economics, and public policy since European settlement. Because of its clear prose, attention to detail, and accessibility to a broad audience of readers, Allosso's textbook is the standard by which future American environmental history textbooks should be judged.

Written in a plain style students will find easy to follow By Kevin Furst Working in the K-12 environment with IB schools, it is often difficult to find ancillary and supporting curricula that are the unique blend of current topics, deeper focus, and a lexile level that is still approachable for high school readers. Written in a plain style students will find easy to follow, Mr. Allosso's book is a rare gem for an IB ESS teacher or any social studies teacher looking for an 11th or 12th grade supplementary text that aims to provide an historical context for the environmental reality in America today. Though likely written for a university student, this text has a range of topics that are engaging to K12 students featuring current thoughts on American Environmental history. The bonus is that unlike most official publications, the low price of this paperback edition makes it affordable enough to order a classroom set and justify its use as a companion text.Highly recommend.

The reason is that Justin goes nice and slowly through the examples. You can flip from page to page and see all of the smallest of changes made. This makes it super simple to copy what he is doing.Another thing I love with this book is that he shows how to do the different perspectives from multiple angles. In many books they show just looking down a railway track, but this one goes from above, below and level and at different sides. Really amazing book and you must check this one out!

I find this book useful for all, not only for beginners. She has taken some drawing samples for her project. Simple and clear instruction plus illustrations make this book valuable on learning and mastering drawing in perspective.

Great information in this book. I like that I can draw along with the lessons. This book will stay in my reference section.

We have thousands of titles available, and we invite you to search for us by name, contact us via our website, or download our most recent catalogues. Having some years ago, during a pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem, gained admission to the courts of the ancient Temple of the Knights Templars, which still exists on Mount Moriah in a perfect state of preservation as a Mussulman Mosque, and having visited many of the ruined fortresses and castles of the ancient order of the Temple, whose shattered walls are still to be seen at intervals in Palestine and in Syria, from Gaza to Antioch, and from the mountains of the Dead Sea to the shores of the Mediterranean, I naturally became greatly interested in the history of the order, and in the numerous remains and memorials of the Knights Templars still to be met with in various stages of decay and ruin in almost every part of Europe. The recent restoration of the Temple Church at London, the most beautiful and the best preserved of all the ancient ecclesiastical edifices of the western provinces of the Temple, first suggested to me the idea of writing a short historical account of the varied fortunes of that great religious and military fraternity of knights and monks by whom it was erected, and of their dark and terrible end.

At times, it would switch from English to a different language so you had no idea what was being said. I was very disappointed because I could not follow the history that was being conveyed and much of it was extreme detail that repeated frequently.

The follow-up to Pulitzer Prize finalist John King's Cityscapes Part pocket guide, part history, and part architectural primer, the companion piece to urban design critic John King’s Cityscapes: San Francisco and Its Buildings contains all of the wit and wonder of the first installment. In epigrammatic prose and with detailed full-color photographs, King highlights fifty structures that tell the story of San Francisco through architecture. Included are emblematic buildings such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, and the Palace of Fine Arts; but King pays just as close attention to less celebrated structures that embody the politics, architectural fads, and cultural values of the eras in which they were conceived. A fresh take on the familiar, Cityscapes 2 shows us how to read the structures around us as signposts and translations for the story of a multilayered and ever-changing city.

This monograph—published to coincide with the Bauhaus exhibition at the MoMA (November 8, 2009-January 25, 2010)—celebrates the work of twenty women artists who created feverishly in all the teaching, workshop, and production branches of the Bauhaus—women who should have been included in the major art histories of the twentieth century long ago, but whose names, masterpieces, and extraordinary lives have only gradually become known to us. Recognized figures such as Anni Albers—the first textile artist to be exhibited at the MoMA—and Marianne Brandt—whose elegant geometric tableware have become classic Alessi designs—are showcased alongside previously unknown artists such as Gertrud Grunow, who taught "Harmonizing Science"; Helene Börner, who led the textile workshop; and Ilse Fehling, a sculptor and the most sought-after set and costume designer of her generation. Founded in 1919, the Bauhaus and most of its students were poor and lacking in just about everything. What it did have, however, was an abundance of enthusiasm, talent, and innovative creativity. Furthermore, over half of those seeking to enroll at the school were women. This tornado of the "fairer sex" was initially seen as a threat, and the weaving mill was quickly turned into a separate "women’s facility." Nevertheless, over the years the mill became a hotbed of groundbreaking production, whose impact far surpassed national borders, as demonstrated by the international acclaim of photographers Lucia Moholy, Florence Henri, and Grete Stern.

The Fairer side of the Bauhaus By Peter Isaacson Most of the other books on the Bauhaus just mention the women in passing as being mainly in the fabric/weaving and pottery departments. This book seeks to redress this absence. The book is divided into sections concentrating on the various departments within the Bauhaus where the women studied, worked and also taught. Each section is further sub-divided into stand alone biographies of individual women. The bios are not bite-sized, nor are they overly detailed. But, rather nice serving-sized portions; not too long nor too short.....just right.I wouldn't recommend this book to someone just starting out wanting to read about the Bauhaus.....this book is definitely geared to fill in the knowledge gaps.I would suggest this as reading for someone who has already read a few other books on the subject, and is familiar with the prior history and personages of the Bauhaus school, because this book doesn't really address this aspect. This book concentrates upon the women, and their various influences and contributions to the Bauhaus School

By Poetry Lover If you are a lover of modern art and haven't learned enough about the women -- who should have been included in many of the other Bauhaus movement book, this is a great place to start. It is beautifully written and informative -- and it really shows the ingenuity of women, who were doing their work somewhere in the background of the men we have already come to know.

Booth and His Assassins, Lincoln and His Avengers was written for a mixed audience, ranging from high school students to adults of all ages. It tells the story of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and centers on important events occurring before, during, and following this horrific event. Readers are no doubt aware of the many books written about Lincoln. What does Booth and His Assassins, Lincoln and His Avengers, offer that other books lack? One of the features of this book is that the author addresses numerous unanswered questions, many of which appear at the end of each chapter. While definitive answers aren’t always offered, readers are encouraged to weigh the evidence and reach their own conclusions. Another feature of this book is the author’s strong connection to a significant figure in the story, James Johnson Gifford, whose role has been largely ignored by other authors. The designer and builder of Ford’s Theatre (the site of the assassination) and a close friend of theater owner John T. Ford, Gifford knew every nook and cranny in the building. In his position as head stage carpenter, he supervised the backstage crew and quickly learned the daily routines and habits of its members. That Gifford was among the very few witnesses invited by both the prosecution and defense to testify at the assassination trial attests to the respect he commanded. Booth and His Assassins, Lincoln and His Avengers retells this fascinating, though tragic, chapter of American history.

Booth and His Assassins, Lincoln and His Avengers, by Dr. William W. Joyce

About the Author For nearly half a century, William W. Joyce taught courses on the teaching of U.S. history and social studies at Michigan State University. Lincoln’s legacy for Americans was a pervasive theme in his teaching. He published professional books and articles for educators, textbooks for elementary and secondary students, reports on his research, and an award-winning series of articles for a major U.S. newspaper. His relative, James Johnson Gifford, builder of both Ford’s Theatre and the Booth family home, sympathized with the secessionist cause while serving as head stage carpenter at the theater. Joyce’s connections with Gifford provide a unique backstage perspective on the assassination and Booth’s escape from the theater. Joyce lives with his wife, Mary, in East Lansing, Michigan.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Nothing new, has its share of errors By SWalriven This book provides nothing more than a cursory examination of the Lincoln Assassination and fails to produce any new information on the subject. Like other books written on the subject, this one is replete with typos, mistakes and the retelling of events which have little to no evidence for support, yet have somehow become accepted "facts". I would not recommend this book. By the way, who is Betty Ormsby?

It all started with a game of Truth or Dare… It’s bad enough I got arrested for prostitution on Christmas Eve. Alleged prostitution, mind you. I didn’t do it. Of course I didn’t. The cops say I offered up a certain sex act for a $5 gasoline gift card, but honey? My sex acts are worth way, way more. So when I tried to explain what happened to the person who came and bailed me out of jail, she wasn’t exactly impressed. Because it was my boyfriend’s mother. Now, I got two boyfriends, so Murphy’s Law said it had to be the mother I hate the most. And she hates me right back. Even more now that I lost her son. That’s right. Where in the hell are Joe and Trevor? It’s Christmas Eve, and I keep getting pictures on social media showing Joe and Trevor all oiled up in g-strings that look like candy canes, dancing with a bunch of well-coiffed older women. I, on the other hand, am wearing Santa pants, flip flops, and smell like jail cell pee. That game of Truth or Dare turns out to be way more dangerous than anyone expected. And our savior? It ain’t the baby Jesus. Not the three wise men. No little drummer boy. Not even the donkey that carried the Virgin Mary on its back while she howled for an epidural. Nope. Can you guess? That’s right. Mavis the Chicken. Can she help us out of this clustercluck? * * * Merry Random Christmas is the eighth book in the New York Times bestselling Random series. Join the gang on Christmas Eve as Darla is unfairly arrested, Trevor and Joe are forced to become strippers, and candy canes appear in places where sugar is a bad, bad idea in this crazy, rollicking romp.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Gotta love Darla, Joe and Trevor! Another hit for Julia Kent! By sambora01 Well Julia Kent has done it again! I knew she would...she has never let me down!!! This book was funny, touching(yes touching..some moments with a chicken...yes I said a chicken...of course there is more to this but you have to read the book to find out just what that is!), some aww moments and some oh my god that just did not happen moments! We see Joe, Darla and Trevor and spend some quality time with Joanne Ross where the sarcastic humor is so so perfect! I laughed so very hard at some of the "new rule" moments! I had tears in my eyes with the acts of kindness that Trevor showed towards "Tortilla" and laughed so hard at the description of the "get up" both he and Joe were wearing or the lack there of while stripping because Sam and Liam got sick after eating bad eel! And lets not forget how the book opens with Darla arrested and in jail and being bailed out by of all people Joe's mother...that is when the fun began! We have some sighting (funny ones) of Alex and of course Darla's mom! Throughout this series you see all of the characters grow little by little and it is most evident in this book! I fell in love with this group in Random Acts of Crazy and look forward to the next one! I was honored to be able to read an ARC copy of this book provided by the author!

Malcolm It's another hit for Julia Kent I have followed this series and most all of her others, but these characters have made me smile and laugh so hard, my husband thought I was having a seizure! This is a wonderful story that shows how these three individuals have come full circle with not only there own lives, but for the least likely people. It a hit, no doubt about it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. You'll never think of a candy cane the same way again! By R Gullett Joe, Darla, and Trevor are back at it again! Who knew Christmas eve could bring jail time, male strippers and a chicken named popsicle? Well a game of truth and dare should answer that question. As always Julia's stories are hilarious and you cant help but to laugh out loud. This will start your holiday mood in the right direction. Though this is a short story it is packed with a whole of laughter. So join the gang and enjoy some holiday cheer.I received and arc for an honest review.
