So I decided to read this book to remember how to draw people.I can say that there are very good advices on how to prepare for painting and how to choose the right pencil. And there were given excellent advices on the construction of proportions for drawing the human body. I think that drawing people is the most difficult thing in the work of the artist. Therefore, I recommend to all the artists who want to learn how to draw people to study this book.

Northern Kentucky University: A Panoramic HistoryFrom University Press of Kentucky

Review "The dramatic photographs of Thomas Schiff, the historic black and white images and the lively narrative bring to life the history and the buoyant and creative spirit of Northern Kentucky University."―James Ramage, Regents Professor of History at Northern Kentucky University

"This is a novel, refreshing addition to the genre of commissioned institutional histories. It is especially timely and fitting to bring attention to the under-studied region of Northern Kentucky and its home grown institutions and leaders."―John Thelin, professor of education at University of Kentucky

"This is more than a history lesson. It feels like a trip down memory lane! I love the pictures past and present and I couldn't be prouder to be an NKU alum. Great read! Go Norse!"―Sheree Paolello, class of 1996, WLWT News 5 anchor

"Tells the dramatic story of NKU's journey from an inspiring early vision to the dynamic university it is today. Much has changed in our nearly 50 years but one thing has remained constant: A steadfast commitment to nurture and support the dreams of our students and our region. Seeing NKU's breathtaking evolution through the lens of Tom Schiff and others leaves no doubt in my mind that our flame will burn ever brighter in the years ahead."―James Votruba, President Emeritus, Northern Kentucky University

"I couldn't ask for a better way to show the remarkable story and history of this university. Words alone could not do it justice."―Arturo Minera, class of 2014

"[. . .] Juxtaposed against historic images of the campus through the years, the images tell

a compelling story about the University's evolution. But it is through the words of those who

know NKU best – professors, staff, and alumni – that its story truly jumps off of the page."―River City News

"The highlight of the book is renowned photographer Thomas Schiff's 360-degree panoramic views of the university taken at different times of the year. His panoramic photographs offer a beautiful and unique perspective of the campus. Historical photographs juxtaposed with the panoramic shots illustrate the university's evolution and expansion.

[. . .] This coffee-table style book offers stunning photography alongside an excellent account of NKU's history."―Kentucky Library Association

About the Author Thomas R. Schiff is a professional photographer and a native of Cincinnati. He is the author of numerous photography books, including Prospect, Wright Panorama: Elements of Frank Lloyd Wright's Architecture in 360 Degrees, and Vegas 360: Panoramic Photographs of Las Vegas.

Experience Civil War historic sites and small towns that can be found nowhere else in America

Today, throughout Vermont, it is possible to identify hundreds and hundreds of Civil War–related sites. Throughout Vermont are soldier homes, halls where war meetings encouraged enlistments, churches where soldier funerals were held and abolitionists spoke, monuments to those who served, hospital sites, and homes where women gathered to make items for the soldiers. The Vermont State House is a virtual Civil War museum. A building survives in Woodstock where the war was administered. Cemeteries hold the gravestones of many of the 34,000 who fought. A field even exists where in 1803 a Quaker preacher heard a voice from above fortell a bloody war over slavery. With the help of this book, Civil War sites can be located as in no other state, taking the reader through the beautiful Vermont landscape of hill farms and small towns that looks more like the Civil War era than that of any other state. "Something Abides" is a very thorough book, and excellent for anyone interested in the Civil War and in Vermont. Each town seems to have its own accounting here, and as you may know, Vermont paid a huge price in terms of the sheer number of young men lost in the Civil War. Howard Coffin has done some beautiful and meticulous research. And the illustrations are helpful and add a nice dimension to the book. Very illuminating and helpful.

I commend Mr. Coffin for the intent behind his publication - showcasing Vermont's role in the Civil War -- but I found his research to be a bit sketchy and found six errors in just the short write-up regarding Barton. Misspelled names, locations, and other easily vetted mistakes turned me off to this well-intended tribute to Vermonters in the Civil War.

Thomas Peterson, MD, the successful Chief of Thoracic Surgery of a large Philadelphia hospital, is mysteriously transported to ancient Israel during the years 27-30 A.D. With his 21st century medical knowledge he rises to become the famous, fabulously wealthy royal physician to King Herod and is given a villa on a large estate, which includes over a hundred slaves.  An atheist Jew, Thomas, who relies on science and not faith, is suddenly faced with the fact that unlimited wealth and power over others brings out in him a dark side he never thought possible. This book deals with faith, doubt, confusion and even anger as he meets the lowly Carpenter who declares He is the Son of God and challenges him in a gentle, mysterious way. During his treacherous journey Thomas rises from the height of success only to plunge into the debts of despair in order to find his true destiny. Dream or reality, that is his constant question during his leap into the past as his professional, moral and spiritual world is shaken by events beyond his control.   Be prepared for a stunning surprise at the end!

At first, I thought of Thomas as a spectator to the stories of the Bible until they began to come alive with each part of the journey. The depth of feeling and the experiences of Thomas drew me into the story as if I were witnessing it myself! I found myself teaching these same stories each week to my class, but now with much more clarity and depth! It was an amazing journey to go on! You will just have to experience it for yourself. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I have.

Being a Messianic Jew myself this book was uplifting and further proof that Jeshua is the living Messiah. I sincerely hope that other Jews get to read this story and finally read the new Testament and compare it to the prophecies in The Torah. My thanks to Barbara Martin for writing this book which I read from cover to cover and just could not put down. Spoiler alert...He lives !!!

By Floridalady Isn't it amazing how Thomas' wicked heart began to be exposed as he went from the important Philadelphia surgeon to a victim humbled by leprosy? Barbara intricately weaved the reality of who all of us are, or could be, into this fictional character from the future. I enjoyed every page and especially the message that was challenged and ultimately preached by Thomas. I will pass this book on!

Excerpt from The Higher Criticism and the Verdict of the MonumentsI cannot do better than conclude with a quotation from an interesting and pertinent article by Prof. Hommel, the illustrious orientalist, in the Sunday Sc/zool Times for March 5, 1893: It is the whole perception of history that divides all Old Testament theology into two opposing camps. The genuineness and authenticity of an account like that in Gen. Xiv. Involves a sweeping and destructive criticism of the now fashionable view as to the trustworthiness of the Old Testament traditions, and therefore this chapter will ever be a stumbling-block to those critics who will not allow a single line to be Mosaic, not even the Decalogue and the so-called Book of the Covenant; and accordingly these men for a long time to come will bend their utmost energies, though with little success, to remove this stone of offence from their path.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Older than springtime By Patricia Heil Sorry. This book went through 7 editions, the last one published in 1910. The 1910 version is available free on archive.org and incorporates material about archaeological discoveries in the 14 years after the first edition.Having said that, you really need to read some edition of Sayce. Wellhausen's Prolegomena (see my review) wasn't even twenty years old when Sayce published his book for the first time. And already, Sayce could show that the breadth of scholarship required to really understand the Tanakh didn't exist among scholars of the Documentary Hypothesis, willfully so, and that in their opinions physical evidence had to go to the wall when it conflicted with said opinions. He could also level against them the charge that they pretended to adopt their attitudes as part of the scientific waves spreading across Europe, at the same time as they ignored scientific results that contradicted them. They emended texts to conform to their notions, and as every scientist knows, changing the data to support a concept that the data contradicts, is basically fraud. Ask Andrew Wakefield. He revealed the bigotry of scholars who, trained in Greek and Latin classics, pretended to judge as if those works sprang fully formed and in divinely revealed writing from -- something, Athena and Zeus both being discredited -- instead of arising on a pyramid of prior development. They condemned everything before Homer and east of Miletus as barbaric, false and inconsiderable. He convicts them of a number of fallacies such as false argument from silence and presentism.Of course Sayce has his problems, just as any author does who draws conclusions in the middle of a series of studies. He tries to liken the twelve tablets of Gilgamesh to the twelve signs of the Roman zodiac. In 1910 Gilgamesh had not yet been published in its entirety in full scholarly fashion; that didn't happen until 1936. Sayce wrote a hundred years before the rediscovery of Ebla and the satellite imagery showing the five city foundations south of the Dead Sea and could not know that the reference to the Cities of the Plain in Genesis 10 show that the chapter could not have been invented in Assyrian times, 15 centuries after destruction of all six. At the same time as Sayce published his last edition, Axel Olrik was publishing his Principles for Oral Narrative Research which shows that the Documentary Hypothesis does not pass the test of Occam's Razor. (see my review) Olrik's book was not translated from Danish to English until 1992. All that is timing. What is important about this book is that all of the flaws it reveals in Documentary Hypothesis are fundamental, original with Wellhausen's teachers and sources, and continuous through Ernest Nicholson's overview published in 1998, as well as recognized by people with scholarly backgrounds at the same time as people like Hermann Gunkel were doing some of the heavy lifting. It's not hindsight that is pointing out the flaws now. It's intelligence and even-handed shrewd perspicacity that pointed out the flaws then.

In this unique and compelling book Tom Hayden argues that Barack Obama would not have been able to mount a successful presidential campaign without the movements of the 1960s. The Long Sixties shows that movements throughout history triumph over Machiavellians, gaining social reforms while leaving both revolutionaries and reactionaries frustrated. Hayden argues that the 1960s left a critical imprint on America, from civil rights laws to the birth of the environmental movement, and forced open the political process to women and people of colour. He urges President Obama to continue this legacy with a popular programme of economic recovery, green jobs and health care reform. The Long Sixties is a carefully researched history which will be of interest to activists, journalists and historians as the fiftieth anniversary of the 1960s begins.

Long Sixties: From 1960 to Barack Obama, by Tom Hayden

From Booklist *Starred Review* With the approach of a decade of anniversaries of the 1960s, iconic figure Hayden stakes a strong claim in the ongoing debate over memories of the turbulent time. He begins by reviewing “movements and Machiavellians,” attempts at social progress and the powers that be that blocked every step before co-opting and adopting modified reforms. Concerned about how memories of the ’60s are presented in the media, he argues that the decade has had a profound effect on American culture and politics, leading up to the election of Barack Obama. Hayden’s analysis offers a sense of the sweep and depth of reform movements across the U.S. that had been brewing for decades and ignited in the ’60s, including civil rights, women’s rights, gay and lesbian rights, and the green movement. Hayden intersperses analysis with personal memories of his years with Students for a Democratic Society, the Chicago 8 conspiracy trial, visiting Vietnam. He ponders how different global politics would be now if Machiavellians hadn’t stopped leftist developments and laments the commodification of the ’60s and its activist figures. Hayden combines the fervor of his radical youth and continued commitment to progressive politics, the introspection of his years, and the research and analysis of his academic career in this insightful, passionate look at progressive reform. --Vanessa Bush

And lots of good things came out of the 1960s. Hayden himself and then-wife Jane Fonda gained cult-like status as figures of the left while they organized against the war in Vietnam and for other progressive causes such as civil rights. So it's natural that he'd want to reflect on these 'glory days'. Unfortunately, how he's doing it just doesn't work. The book format is too long. And Obama has by now demonstrated that he is not the second coming of that New Left.Merely being the first African American elected to the office and from the Democratic party does not qualify somebody as a 'liberal'. Coming from the trenches of Chicago's political machine, Obama's political expedience strategically places him to the right of predecessors Jesse Jackson and then earlier, Shirley Chisholm. They were candidates of the left, but they had no chance of obtaining either the nomination or the election because of that alliance.Trying to make peace with the administration's current policy decisions, he appears to romanticize Obama: the image.

This may have been the defining document of the New Left in this era.Up to Berkeley and Pacific School of Religion for 4 years graduate work, the ideas and feelings of the moments are well remembered by Tom.The 70's and 80's and his perspective are rich in what I observed and what I didn't. I had him speak a community forum in the fall of 1972, at Asbury United Methodist Church, East Los Angeles. He drew a nice crowd, tho we had hoped Jane would come along. Most writers, one can skim and spead read. Not this book, each sentence and paragraph contains multiple ideas and references. Not a difficult read, but one that must be put down, absorbed, reflected on, and then picked up again. When the firestorm over Reverend Jeremiah Wright and his black liberation theology hit the headlines, I remembered James Cone and many others voicing these same points 30 years earlier. Todays' young reporters did not live this, nor did whites (mostly). He hopes to connect the 60's with Barach Obama but fails. His primary beginning statement: "Obama was created in a classic rebellious act of interracial love". Beyond that, President Obama is his own man.All said and done, Tom Hayden is a brilliant thinker and advocate. For those seeking to know the thinking of the era, a must read book.

Hayden makes this point here, that The Movement grew spontaneously and had no real leader. In fact he seeks to generalize about The Movement and movements in general. This may be useful but seems of academic interest, mostly. It makes no predictions and uncovers no new insights about the 60's.I agree with Tom that the 60's began around 1957 and lasted until 1974 when Nixon resigned, and that there were two 60's divided sometime around 1965. Taken together, these form the Long Sixties. Prior to that year, prior to the Vietnam War, there was only a diffuse and inchohate feeling that change was happening. After 1965 there was a demand for change, now! When it did not come, things got intense. Tom makes good points about the assassinations; we forget that there were many more than the Big Three of John, Martin, Bobby. He also makes a good point about the infiltration of dissident groups by the FBI, etc., and the possibility that the CIA was behind some of the proliferation of drug use at the time, the idea being that this would divert the movement from politics into...recreation. Remember how the CIA sold crack to raise money for the Contras? Coulda happened. But Tom needs better editors. Is this a personal memoire or history? He needs someone to rid him of the bad habit of the dash. His sentences should be shortened to where they communicate one idea at a time. Extraneous material following dashes should be given a sentence of its own, be fair. These days, I just plain hate dashes. Also his attempt to tie Obama to the 60's does not work. Progressives wishing he were otherwise are in for further disappointments I'd say. He has enough problems without we lay the 60's on him, too.The 60's are important in their own right and they have a lot to say about today. For instance those who decry the present divide in national politics should look back. They would see these are halcyon days comparatively. Go down the list: cities burning? Nope. Street demonstrations practically daily? Nope. Campus unrest? Nope. Assassinations? Nope. Excellent music on underground FM radio stations? Nope. :)He gets three stars for coming on like a leader and using too many dashes besides.
