Philochristus, by Edwin Abbott Abbott

About the Author Edwin Abbott Abbott (1838-1926) has been ranked as one of the leading scholars and theologians of the Victorian era. He received highest honors in mathematics, classics, and theology at St. John's College, Cambridge, and in 1862 began a brilliant career, during which he served as schoolmaster of some of England's outstanding schools. At the same time he distinguished himself as a scholar, and in 1889 he retired to his studies. Although "Flatland, a literary jeu d'esprit, " has given pleasure to thousands of readers over many generations, Abbott is best known for his scholarly works, especially his "Shakespearian Grammar "and his life of Francis Bacon, and for a number of theological discussions.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. he would have been the greatest preacher in the English Church By schwent For devout Christians, this book from 1878 is a hidden gem. The author is a highly educated scholar of whom his contemporary, Bishop Percival, declared that ”Had Edwin Abbott been able to continue preaching, he would have been the greatest preacher in the English Church.” This book is a fictional memoir of one of many disciples of Christ, but it is the result of deep research of the times of Christ, from works of historians, Jewish writings (i.e., the Talmud), and the scriptures. I especially like how the author tries to capture Jesus' personality, as reflecting the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23). That would be accurate. I began reading it online at "Read Any Book" but purchased it because it is a gem - [...]

Chloe Franklin wouldn’t call herself a commitment-phobe, so much as she’s allergic to anything long term. She loves the sexy, sweaty, and intensely hot hours of the night that come before the sun rises, though. Especially when those nights are spent with Search-and-Rescuer Gage McGraw...

Gage loves his job, but there is one thing he’s starting to like more than the rush of a mission—a stacked blonde with a mouth that haunts his dreams. Every time he steps foot in the sleepy town of Beaufort, he hooks up with Chloe. But he’s tired of hooks-ups. He wants more.

Just the sight of Gage gets Chloe's blood going. Hot, bothered, and finally naked, she’s ready for their night to start. But before he takes her, he whispers what his intentions really are…and then the games really begin.

Playing dirty can be the best kind of fun…

Review for Tell Me You Need Me by Joya Ryan By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***Tell Me You Need Me by Joya RyanBook One of the Search and Seduce seriesPublisher: BrazenPublication Date: November 16, 2015Rating: 3 starsSource: eARC from NetGalley***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***Summary (from Goodreads):Playing dirty can be the best kind of fun…Chloe Franklin wouldn't call herself a commitment-phobe, so much as she's allergic to anything long term. She loves the sexy, sweaty and intensely hot hours of the night that come before the sun rises, though. Especially when those nights are spent with Search-and-Rescuer Gage McGraw...Gage loves his job, but there is one thing he's starting to like more than the rush of a mission--a stacked blonde with a mouth that haunts his dreams. Every time he steps foot in the sleepy town of Beaufort, he hooks up with Chloe. But he's tired of hooks-ups. He wants more.Just the sight of Gage gets Chloe's blood going. Hot, bothered, and finally naked, she's ready for their night to start. But before he takes her, he whispers what his intentions really are…and then the games really begin. What I Liked:This book and the next book I'll be reviewing (Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds) both feature a woman named Chloe, and both Chloe's are commitment phobes and don't want to shack up with the respective man they've come to enjoy spending time with (physically). In this book, Chloe and Gage have known each other for years; he visits a weekend at a time, and he and Chloe hook up, and then he leaves. Both are always anticipating the next time he comes. But Gage might be looking into a more permanent position in Beaufort, and he wants Chloe to go steady with him. But Chloe doesn't want anything permanent, and Gage isn't even sure he wants to stay in the town permanently. But neither of them are going to give up what they currently have. The first scene in the book took me by surprise, because I had no idea that Chloe and Gage already knew each other (I didn't read the synopsis well enough, I think). I was like... why is she about to hook up with someone who uses THOSE lines?! But they already knew each other. Nevertheless, the first scene is SO hot. Right from the start, we get to see what type of relationship Chloe and Gage have - purely physical, no emotional strings attached.I really liked Gage; he's a Search-and-Rescuer, and he is currently in between rescues. He's teaching young search-and-rescuers the tricks of the trade in the forest in Beaufort. Gage would never consider settling down in Beaufort (or anywhere), but after a near-death experience, he's decided that he wants Chloe in his life, permanently. Gage is an honest, noble, hot guy, and I liked him.Chloe was a little harder for me to like because she kept pushing away Gage. She knew she wanted him but didn't want any more from him than a physical relationship. Yet she had feelings for him. I hate this type of confusion, it hurts people unnecessarily! Still, Chloe is a strong type of woman, despite not really knowing what she wants. She's dedicated to her mother's restaurant, and it's really amazing to see how committed she is to see it flourish, after her mother's death. The pair are good together, especially physically. I didn't feel as much of a connection as I had wanted (maybe because they already knew each other?), and I wish I liked Chloe more, but they definitely had good chemistry. Good, but not really hot, like I was expecting. I've not read any of Joya Ryan's books, but I'd heard that her books were SUPER hot. This book was hot but not really hot, if that makes sense.Overall, my opinion of this one is fairly positive, despite the three-star rating. I liked it but didn't love. See below for my (vague) dislikes. What I Did Not Like:I already stated that I had a hard time liking Chloe. Unfortunately, I didn't like her indecisiveness, and when she made a decision, I still didn't like her. There was a scene in which she finally decided she wanted more from Gage, only to then back out. I'm not really a fan of the way Chloe thinks. It's totally okay to not be sure of what you want; but to string someone along in the process is cruel. This book wasn't as hot as I'd expected! Maybe my expectations were too high. I'd heard how hot Joya Ryan's books were, but this book didn't see *that* hot? Maybe I'm too demanding. Ha!I didn't quite feel the emotional connection that these two had, though this could just be me. They had decent chemistry, and the steamy scenes were hot (better than okay but not smokin', if that makes sense). But I didn't quite catch their emotional connection as the book went on - which was sad, because that's basically what this book was about. They already had a great preexisting physical relationship, and this book went through their emotional relationship. The ending felt a bit neat, which is okay in Brazen books, but doesn't stop me from wanting more! I'm not a fan of the man being the only one to work for the relationship, and the woman not doing anything. I don't really care if that view isn't seen as "feminist" - if you mess up, or even if you just really want to be with the person, you should also be invested in working things out. Grand gestures by the man shouldn't JUST be by the man.Would I Recommend It:No. I don't really recommend this one - there are much better Brazen novels. It wasn't that this one was bad - it just wasn't good enough to recommend. Typically I'd only recommend Brazen books that get a rating of four stars or higher from me. 99% of my Brazen reads have been four stars or higher, so there are a lot more Brazen novels that I could recommend!Rating:3 stars. Not terrible, but not impressive, either. I might try one of Joya Ryan's other Brazen novels, but this one didn't really do much for me. My next review, for Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds, is one in which I highly recommend that novel!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Worth Reading!:) By Jackie's Book World Tell Me You Need Me is a playful romantic story that is full of steamy scenes and is also about second chances at love.Right at the very beginning of the book we get introduced to Search-and-Rescuer, Gage McGraw, who has come to Beaufort to take some time off. In the mist all of that he is at a bar when a beautiful stranger gets his attention and as the two start to flirt they get up, and when she guides him outside he immediately calls her by her name. Gage has known Chloe for some time now and every time he gets back to Beaufort, they get together. Their relationship has been always been of the no-strings-attached-type of relationship, and it has worked for them for a couple of years now. Yet after Gage comes close to losing his life, he has realized that he doesn't have anyone permanent in his life, and by coming back to Chloe he wants to see if they can have a real relationship. Which doesn't turn out as he planned, because Chloe immediately tells him that she is not interested in having a long term relationship with someone that is not going to be there all the time. The story really begins when Gage starts to plan out how he is going to get Chloe to go out with him and get to know her better instead of just having sex.Chloe Franklin is clear on not wanting a relationship and when Gage comes into her life everything starts to change. She can't stop thinking about him all the time, and when he gets back to town and tells her that he wants more she immediately starts to take a step back. She knows that Gage will never leave his job to relocate to her town, and having a long distance relationship doesn't appeal to her. But when she starts to spend more time with him, and getting to know him better she starts to wonder if he might just be the one for her.I really enjoyed reading this story, it was funny and romantic. The characters had a lot of personality and that kept me interested in the book. It is evident that the characters have a past that they haven't worked out, but as the two start to get to know each other they help one another move on. The writing was great and the story had a good flow that was easy and enjoyable to read. Overall if you are looking for a story about second chances, then I highly recommend reading this book it is worth the read. :)***ARC provided by Entangled in exchange for an honest review.***

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It didn't really make sense the hero wanted more but not really ... what's up with that??? By Lightning City Book Reviews This novel is a strange kind of Romance. The heroine, Chloe Franklin, is commitment phobic. Her late mother pined for the husband who left her and always expected/waited for him to return. Chloe saw how that took an emotional toll on her mother. Even as her mother lay dying of Cancer her thoughts were if her husband would be coming to see her. Chloe vowed never to be that kind of woman - waiting for a man to call her, to go on dates, or to get into a relationship. The closest thing to a "relationship" that Chloe has is for two years she has been a "booty call" for Search and Rescuer Gage McGraw. He comes to her small town for a week-end, they have mind-blowing sex, he leaves, no strings, and everybody's happy.Gage McGraw had a close call recently on a job. While rescuing some climbers he was scaling down a cliff to get to them when his line broke and he was free falling through the air. Luckily he was able to catch hold of a nearby rope in time. But that near death experience make him realize that if something were to happen to him, there would be no one to call. He has no family, no close friends, and no girlfriend. But as he was falling he was thinking about Chloe. So on his next trip to Beaufort he is there for three weeks to train some new recruits and volunteers and to convince Chloe to take their arrangement to a relationship. Three weeks Chloe is horrified about. That and that Gage wants to ... take her on a date. This is a plan that Gage is determined to pursue and Chloe is to thwart. The sex is extremely hot in "Tell Me You Need Me" - there is no doubt there. However it seems as though even when Gage is trying to woo Chloe he succumbs too easily to her games of distracting him from his goal of getting her to go on a date with him. I'm a big fan, HUGE, of the SMEXY. But I felt that it took away from the story in this case. Again, the scenes were fantastic and tremendously sensual and erotic but ... I don't know ... Gage wanted to go on a date, Chloe denied him, then Gage said he'd deny her sex, but she'd trick him in to some semblance of sex and finally they go on a date and BOOM they have sex.The big thing that bothered me about this novel was that Gage wanted to date in order to get to know Chloe - talk to her rather than just have sex. Have something more meaningful that just be a "booty call" - be in a "relationship". But in talking to her he learned about her feelings about her mother and her father's leaving and how that affected her. But Gage wants Chloe to be his girlfriend - and still go away and do jobs and return to Beaufort whenever he can. So basically he wants the same arrangement as what they already had - but he wants someone to call his girlfriend, accompany him to nice meals, worry about him while he's gone, and have a next of kin on his Emergency Contacts card. How Romantic.Unfortunately "Tell Me You Need Me" did not grab me as many other novels do - in fact it took me quite a while to get into it. Even then I really wasn't invested in the main characters as much as I was the secondary characters, the friends of Chloe and Gage. Hopefully, Joya Ryan was just off her game with this novel.

This book is about nebulae-- massive clouds of cosmic gas and dust set aglow by the borrowed light of stars. In cosmic terms, a nebula is as fleeting as a sunset or a campfire, and to many casual stargazers, just as beautiful. With stunning, full-color original images and easy-to-understand descriptions, this book helps you understand a little of the science and history behind these amazing cosmic assemblies. In this book you will discover... * The 18th-century musician who turned to astronomy in search of a new challenge and discovered hundreds of nebulae and other sights in the deep sky beyond our solar system * The nature and composition of nebulae, and what these objects can teach us about the birth and death of stars in our galaxy * A tour of the famous Orion Nebula, the nearest cosmic star factory to Earth * The chess-piece outline of a churning, dark nebula among the bright blue-white stars of Orion’s Belt * A chain of astonishing star-forming nebulae along the rich band of the Milky Way that are among the most beautiful objects in the night sky * An “accidental nebula” created by a rogue star that was slingshotted across the galaxy 2 million years ago by a supernova explosion * A gnarled and glowing shock-wave in the constellation Cygnus that marks the remnants of a star that detonated in prehistoric times * Glimpses of islands of new stars and glowing nebulae in spiral galaxies tens of millions of light years away With dozens of colorful, high-resolution images captured by renowned astrophotographer Terry Hancock, this book will delight and educate “armchair astronomers” who wish to learn more about the workings of the universe.

At the start of his lifelong career, Magnum photographer Leonard Freed (1929-2006) lived in Amsterdam for many years, from 1957 to 1970. As an American Jew from a family of Russian immigrants, he felt at ease in this historic city with its liberal spirit and longstanding tradition of tolerance for Jews. Freed was fascinated by the remarkable postwar recovery of Jewish life in Amsterdam, where only 20,000 out of 80,000 Jews had survived the Shoah. This became the topic of his first major documentary project as a professional photographer. He made a multifaceted and compelling portrait of the city’s Jewish community, which had endured unimaginable suffering but was now striving to forget, and building a new life with exceptional resilience and vitality. His photographs capture the atmosphere of optimism that prevailed in the Jewish community at the time, and testify to the courage and willpower of those who had survived the war. Today we know that the traumas of war cannot be suppressed, but in those days, that seemed like the only way of coping. The buried pain and grief lingered on, resurfacing only many years later. Over time, Freed’s photographs have therefore acquired additional layers of meaning. They now form a unique and valuable historical document. In 1958, a small selection from Freed’s documentary series was published in his first photo book, Joden van Amsterdam (Jews of Amsterdam), by publishing house De Bezige Bij. In 2013, the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam rediscovered the series in Freed’s archives. The museum acquired 80 vintage prints and 150 new prints of previously unpublished images from Brigitte Freed, the photographer’s widow. This book presents some 150 photos, with an introduction by curator of photography Bernadette van Woerkom. Leonard Freed born in Brooklyn, New York, first took up photography in 1953 while traveling in Europe. His work focuses on ordinary people going about their everyday lives, expressing a special bond with outsiders and the oppressed. Freed made many probing documentary photo series about social issues, including one on black Americans and their struggle for civil rights. In 1972, he was admitted to the famous photographic cooperative Magnum Photos. Throughout his career, he showed an ongoing interest in Jewish life around the world.Leonard Freed born in Brooklyn, New York, first took up photography in 1953 while traveling in Europe. About the Author Leonard Freed (October 23, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York – November 29, 2006 in Garrison, New York) was a documentary photojournalist and longtime Magnum member. He was born to Jewish, working-class parents of Eastern European descent. Freed had wanted to be a painter, but began taking photographs in the Netherlands and discovered a new passion. He traveled in Europe and Africa before returning to the United States where he attended the New School and studied with Alexey Brodovitch, the art director of Harper's Bazaar. In 1958 he moved to Amsterdam to photograph its Jewish community. Through the 1960s he continued to work as a freelance photojournalist, traveling widely. He documented such events and subjects as the Civil Rights movement in America (1964–65), the Yom Kippur War in 1973, and the New York City police department (1972–79).[1] His career blossomed during the American civil rights movement, when he traveled the country with Martin Luther King, Jr. in his celebrated march across the US from Alabama to Washington. This journey gave him the opportunity to produce his 1968 book, Black in White America, which brought considerable attention. His work on New York City law enforcement also led to a book, Police Work which was published in 1980. Early in Freed's career, Edward Steichen purchased three photographs from Freed for the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.[2] In 1967, Cornell Capa selected Freed as one of five photographers to participate in his "Concerned Photography" exhibition. Freed joined Magnum Photos in 1972. Publications to which Freed contributed over the years included Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Fortune, Libération, Life, Look, Paris-Match, Stern, and The Sunday Times Magazine of London. In later years, Freed continued shooting photographs in Italy, Turkey, Germany, Lebanon and the U.S. He also shot four films for Japanese, Dutch and Belgian television.

This book has particular significance, since Freed took the photos at a pivotal time in the resurgence of Amsterdam's Jewish life and the photos comprised Freed's first documentary project. Also, many of these photos were rediscovered just two years ago.Although I've spent a lot of time in Amsterdam, I'm sure this book would be of great interest to anyone with a strong interest in this subject matter. Leonard Freed was a masterful and passionate photographer, as these photos attest.

I really like the part that breaks down acidic foods in comparison to alkaline foods. This will make a great stocking stuffer for my brother this year.
