Wildlife photography is an adventure—and as any great adventure story unfolds, odds are, there are bound to be some great risks involved. Whether it’s the risk or the reward—or both—that motivates wildlife shooters, there is one pervasive truth: Preparation is key to success—and survival. In this book, Joe Classen approaches the art of wildlife photography from a hunter’s perspective. He teaches readers how to select and use the appropriate specialized photographic gear required for the rigors of wildlife photography—as you’d expect. However, he also teaches you how to mentally and physically prepare for an outing in which your wits must be as keen as your eye. Classen provides detailed insights into planning and packing for a wilderness adventure. Readers will learn how to securely pack their delicate photographic gear for a rugged, outdoor environment but will also learn how to choose and tote the best clothing for the site, accessories to ensure your personal safety, and even basic cooking and drinking requirements for days spent shooting in remote areas.Once you’ve scouted your location, you’ll learn how to track and lure your photographic subject using time-honored practices (calls—from lust to hunger, to anger and sloth; decoys; attractor scents; working invisibly, etc.) while “shooting” (your camera!) from a blind or stand—or, conversely, by using a more aggressive stalk-and-ambush approach. You’ll learn how to read animal behaviors—from eating to mating—and predict how, when, and where your best photographic opportunities will arise—and when your safety should be a greater concern than your shot. With this soup-to-nuts approach, readers will find, in this book, a compendium of information about wild-animal behavior, wilderness survival and safety, the art and science of photographic capture, and even storing and processing your prized digital files once you return home from your adventure. Armed with Classen’s suggestions and strategies, you’ll maximize your photo opportunities and increase the odds that your wildlife images are the mount-and-frame trophies for which you risked life and limb.

Wildlife Photography: Advanced Field Techniques for Tracking Elusive Animals and Capturing Magical Moments, by Joseph Classen

About the Author Joseph Classen is originally from St. Charles, Missouri. Located along the Missouri river, and nearby the mighty Mississippi, this historic town was founded in 1769 by Louis Blanchette, and was known as a launching pad for early explorers, traders, and immigrants who were heading west. St. Charles was a thriving trading community back in the day, it was the site of the famous Lewis and Clark Rendezvous, and it was also the familiar stomping grounds of individuals such as Daniel Boone. It was along those muddy rivers, immersed in that adventurous, pioneer spirit that his undying love of the outdoors was born.Throughout his entire life, from his earliest memories as a child, up until this very day, a passionate love of the natural world has possessed his soul. There has never been a time that his heart didn’t begin to beat faster at the very thought of heading outdoors for an adventure of one kind or another, no matter how big or small. His infatuation with Mother Nature has produced an unquenchable thirst which has taken him to some of the wildest, most unforgiving, and remote locations in the United States and Canada. In fact, that “call of the wild” certainly played a part in bringing him to the place he currently calls home: Kodiak Island, Alaska, one of the most beautiful and rugged places in the world. Over the last decade or so, he's shared his experiences and love of nature through various forms of media. He's written numerous books and articles on a variety of nature related topics, and was the host of an outdoors themed radio show for several years, been a member of the Professional Outdoor Media Association, and also work as an Alaskan photography, fishing, and wilderness guide. Please visit his website Wild Revelation for more information. (wildrevelation.com) His photography work has won awards, been published in numerous magazines, featured by conservation organizations and travel bureaus, and continues to gain worldwide exposure.

(I haven't found a better consolidated resource.) So too for anyone preparing for extended wilderness adventures where self sufficiency and thorough preparation are necessary for survival. I especially liked the suggested packing and gear lists. After 30 years of remote hunting and fishing adventures in Alaska, I found them to be comprehensive and updated with the most recent technology in high-performance gear. Joe's proven skill as a lifelong hunter shines through in his tips for approaching (even dangerous) wildlife for the best possible photographs. This book will satisfy all your gear and technique research requirements you are headed into remote wilderness with a fire burning in your soul for stunning wildlife and wilderness photography. Also, the book is full of some of Joe's stunning wildlife photographs that will definitely serve to ignite that fire!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Field Craft By Conrad J. Obregon There are a number of good books about wildlife photography that deal with photographic techniques, like focusing, exposure and composition. Fewer deal with what I call field craft, that is, taking care of one's self in the wilderness at least as well as your equipment and then finding and getting close enough to the wildlife to capture the image.Joseph Classen deals almost exclusively with field craft in this book. After an introduction showing the relationship between photography and hunting, he talks about researching the target animal and the importance of safety. There is a discussion of field gear including self-defense (!), bags, cooking and the like, and then specialty gear like clothing, scent, blinds and calls and decoys. He urges the photographer to practice before the big shoot, and discusses scouting the shooting location. Classen considers the two techniques of stalking and waiting for animals. Next are a few thoughts on the actual shoot, and its follow-up, both on site and at home, where, curiously given his avoidance of photographic technique, he discusses editing the images.Unfortunately, the book seems aimed at photographers who are going to be introduced into an extremely wild habitat where survival will be an important element. Places like the more well-traveled national parks are not disdained, but looked on only as places to practice wildlife photography. On top of that, most of the recommendations are generic. For example, the author tells us to research a target animal on the web, but offers no specific hints of places to look, or even the type of Google searches that help. For approaching animals, other than the suggestion that one use heel-toe walking to avoid sounding human, there is little advice other than to be prepared to walk or crawl into position. It would have been useful for the author to provide some specific examples of how he deals with particular animals. As to animal images they are all of the mega-fauna that hang out in Classen's area of Alaska and are rather pedestrian. I'm not certain that the author's advice would even be useful in say, Uganda. Some of the images are laughable, like a photograph of a person reading a book to support the point that the reader should research his target species. I certainly didn't need two small images of helicopters accompanying the text that tells me that rescue in the wilderness may be difficult.Even though I've photographed plenty of wildlife, I hoped to learn a few tips that went beyond common sense and what I could figure out on my own. I didn't.

He covers the research and planning for such shoots. He gives lists of the necessary equipment not just for taking the picture itself but also what you need to survive in the wilderness. He goes very in depth with these items and the other necessary skills of tracking, camouflage, and calling which enable the amazing wildlife images in the book. He also stresses keeping safe and legal in all activities. He also states right from the start you should already have the photography knowledge behind you. This is not a book about f-stops and shutter speeds but it is a great read for those wanting to take their wildlife skills to the next level.I received this book in order to review.

From reviews of the hardcover edition:

“More Curious begins by making you wonder what kind of book it is, exactly, and ends by reminding you that categories are nonsense when you’re enjoying something this much.”—Jennifer Egan, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of A Visit from the Goon Squad

“Mr. Wilsey can write in a range of emotional octaves, moving from the comic to the philosophical to the streetwise with ease, while putting body language on his prose to give the reader an almost synesthetic sense of what he’s saying.”—Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

“More Curious captures the dizzying absurdity of contemporary America.”—Vanity Fair

“Sean Wilsey’s witty essays from his cross-country adventures form a portrait of the weird side of contemporary America.”—Los Angeles Times

“When Wilsey is at his best, and he often is in More Curious, his prose has a barely contained energy that makes his work both informative and entertaining. And often, whether his subject is rats or NASA or skateboarding or soccer, that work is provocative and huge-hearted.”—Alex Lemon, Dallas Morning News

“Sometimes he’s funny and self-deprecating and sometimes he’s somber; sometimes his scope is as sweeping as our country, and other times it’s as narrow as Buzz Aldrin’s taste in wristwatches. There’s one through-line from beginning to end, though: those careful, thoughtful, perfect sentences.”—Alison Hallett, Portland Mercury

“Generation-defining . . . a welcome chronicle of our age.”—David Kurlander, San Francisco Bay Guardian

Now in paperback, with a bonus essay not included in the hardcover edition, here is Sean Wilsey’s celebrated collection of essays on the glory and misery, the beauty and absurdity of contemporary America.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful! By Jon Hunt Sean Wilsey's book, "More Curious", is a gem. It's kind of like Seinfeld....a book about nothing...but it is about slices of the author's life which are funny, informative and make a good read. I wish there were more books like this.Wilsey takes us from Marfa, Texas...about as far as one can get from civilization and still be in the lower forty-eight....to a trip across the south in a truck that can do no more than forty-five. Along the way there's a chapter about buying a dishwasher online....I just bought one so this story was great fun. There's another tale about the World Cup, where he bemoans America's lack of interest in the game, which is curiously a little out of sync after so many Americans were enraptured about soccer recently. There are many more chapters, each with its own flair. "More Curious" is a potpourri of interest with no particular theme or direction....they stand by themselves. But the author's heartwarming tales make it a wonderful read. I highly recommend it!

At 29 my husband and I decided we'd had enough of it and left. Maine was our adventure, and here we have stayed. Reading this book reminded me of what I miss about Texas--the sky, the horizon, the adolescent "life ahead of you " memories. Wilsey captures the uniqueness of Marfa as it was and as it is. And art. And artists. Crazy. Now I will read Infinite Jest and Oh the Glory of it All.

I learned some new information from this book, but there was so much tidbits of information that it was a very slow read. I would have liked to have seen the traditional "curious" information edited out.

My dad had a hardback original back in the 1930s and I use to read the stories over and over again. I'd recommend it to young grade school kids instead of some of the junk they are encouraged to read in our schools. Brings back memories of my childhood. Terrific read.

Colorado's central and southern mountains still draw droves of skiers to the slopes. However, many of the historic runs and areas that were popular over the past century -- some near the current resorts of Aspen, Breckenridge, Crested Butte, Purgatory, Telluride and Vail -- no longer exist. Local hills like Whittaker Ranch near Eagle featured little more than a rope tow and warming hut. Now underneath Lake Dillon, Prestrud Jump hosted tournaments where Olympian Anders Haugen broke ski-jumping world records. From Lands End near Grand Junction to Sugarite near Trinidad, from swanky Hoosier Pass in Summit County to Stoner in Montezuma County, authors Caryn and Peter Boddie take readers on a tour of the lost ski areas of central and southern Colorado.

*Includes pictures of the various amusement parks and rides *Traces the history of Coney Island and includes accounts of the old amusement parks and rides *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "If Paris is France, Coney Island, between June and September, is the World.” – George Tilyou There are few places on Earth that have as much hustle and bustle as New York City, so it’s no surprise that people nearby flock to some sort of escape. For many, that escape comes in the form of Brooklyn’s Coney Island, which has been one of the area’s most popular seaside resorts and amusement park areas since the late 19th century. People may come for different things, such as the festivities held there on July 4th (most notably the hot dog eating contest), the newest rollercoaster, or a minor league baseball game, but just about everyone is sure to have a good time. Like so much of New York’s development, the manner in which Coney Island has become what it is over the past 130 years is full of surprise and controversy. For most of its history, Coney Island was virtually uninhabited, even when the native Lenape lived in the region before European explorers arrived, yet that very aspect made the place attractive for vacationers looking to escape city life during the summer. In fact, New York City’s leaders tried to prevent development on the island in hopes of establishing it as a giant natural park, only for wealthy resorts to ultimately pop up along beachfront property. Far from it, Coney Island spent the last few decades of the 19th century operating like Las Vegas, with every kind of vice helping keep things running. In time, Coney Island became America’s biggest and most visited amusement park resort, with Dreamland, Steeplechase Park, and Luna Park all becoming some of the nation's most famous and historic parks. Although Coney Island's heyday has long since passed and those three parks have all closed, Coney Island remains best known for amusement parks today. The first rides were built on Coney Island in the 1870s, and there are now multiple parks on Coney Island, which has actually since become a peninsula thanks to the addition of landfill over the course of its development. Coney Island: The History of New York City’s Most Famous Amusement Park Resort looks at the history of the popular landmark. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Coney Island like never before, in no time at all.

The first time that man set out to locate and bring back to safety a lost friend, animal or precious object, the concept of search and rescue was born. In this book, David Morris, Curator of Aircraft and Large Objects at the Fleet Air Arm, takes a look at a century of Royal Navy search and rescue, from the first mission to rescue a downed pilot in the Balkans in November 1915 to the present day. With a foreword by former Royal Navy Chief Test Pilot Captain Eric Brown, David Morris describes the aircraft and recounts some of the missions flown by Royal Navy search and rescue pilots over that century, from the Antarctic and South Georgia’s Fortuna Glacier to the jungles of Borneo, the Arabian Sea and Hong Kong, not forgetting rescues in British waters, including the floods of 1953.

Now that the job is done, it’s time to park his motorcycle, kick up his boots, enjoy a few drinks, and possibly find a honey to warm his bed for a night. After all, nothing quite refuels the magik like pleasure. That was the plan, anyways. Too bad life had something else in store for this magikal biker bad boy. When a stubborn redhead is set in his path, it’s all he can to do to keep from instantly claiming her—his mate. Evil has its sights set on his woman and he’s not about to let her go without one hell of a fight.

By SFF Dragon I love Mandy Roth's books, have been reading them for a decade or more and the Druid Series of Immortal Highlander paranormal romance novellas is a real winner for me. I've read the first three books in the series so many times that if they were paper they'd have fallen apart by now. 'A Druid of Her Own', the fourth book in the series has finally made it's long awaited appearance, I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review and once I got my grubby little mitts on it there was nothing else in my universe except this book. I devoured it in one go and absolutely loved it.After a couple of centuries of hunting and chasing, Immortal Druid sorcerer and werewolf Kennard O'Caha, along with his twin cousins Liam and Cillian, has finally managed to trap and kill the evil Athol, but it seems too easy to Kennard. Something is niggling and he isn't sure that the dark sorcerer is really dead, but Liam and Cillian are and they all need some R&R. Pulled by a feeling he can't name, they head to the small town of Sandsville where Kennard had failed to kill Athol 23 years ago. Riding into town at the start of Bike Week and the Christmas in July festivities, they'll fit right in, but as they round the corner, Kenndard is compelled to look at the woman standing outside the Mystic Grounds Coffee Shop and then he can't get her out of his mind.Alone all her life, except for her BFF Maria and her family of witches, 23 year old Maggie grew up in foster care, has scrimped, saved and worked hard to get her coffee shop and make it a success, despite having been ridiculed and abused most of her life. It's not really her fault she's haunted by a snake headed demon. Living on romance novels, plagued by nightmares and feeling more exhausted and drained every day, she and Maria spend their free time fighting evil and the demons trying to move into Sandsville. The combined Bike Week and Christmas in July bring in more business for the town but she's never really taken any notice of the newcomers, until she's compelled to stare at one of the bikers riding past.I don't want to give any spoilers, but this action packed paranormal romance is written with Mandy's usual humour, some steam, bad guys to fight and of course, the happily ever after we all expect for true mates Kennard and Maggie, but there's a twist in the tail. I really couldn't put it down and absolutely loved it. I can't wait for the next one and hope it won't be long coming.

By Jean Smith A Druid of Her Own is the first in the Druid series that I’ve read. I’m definitely interested in picking up the others in the series. I’ve found I totally enjoy reading Ms. Roth’s books. This particular romance is a blend of fantasy and paranormal with its magic and wolf shifters. Anyone that has read their share of novellas and novels of varying lengths has probably noticed that the shorter the piece the more concise and tight the writer has to be with the storyline. This takes a lot of skill. Ms. Roth has the skill. But sometimes in being so concise and tightening things down so much to fit a smaller footprint there are some aspects of a story that aren’t as detailed as you might hope for as a reader. In this particular instance, it was the amount of actual romance you get to see happening. I truly don’t think that Ms. Roth could have told the story differently, though. Thank heavens that it’s an accepted fact that wolf shifters know their mates almost instantly and not much wooing is needed. So, you might ask if there wasn’t a whole lot of wooing going on, what was going on? The beginning of the story is all about getting to know Kennard O’Caha, his cousins and the very real threat they have in the mage Athol. At one time Athol had been a Druid… until he decided to walk the dark paths. Thinking they have finally vanquished their enemy they go off to celebrate. But a random hookup is the furthest from Kennard’s mind when he and his cousins ride into town. Nope nothing random will do when he sees the curly redhead. Distraction becomes the name of the game when the single-minded focus of his wolf leads him right to the door of her coffee shop. The chemistry is immediate. Sparks fly and lips lock. You get a real good sense of Kennard’s sense of humor and drop dead sexiness after all the seriousness of battle when he encounters Maggie. This is one bad boy alpha that is close to losing his control when presented with his mate, something just not done in the company of humans. Something that has our hero doing a kiss and run.So, what is our heroine, Maggie supposed to think? She has her hands full with managing her coffee shop, battling rogues and chasing demons, let alone a town full of people that call her Crazy Maggie. Nightmares have plagued her life. Power emanates from her core. Her best friend is a witch. Men who pay her a mind are what I wouldn’t hesitate to call real douchebags. So, now she has Mr. Hotness playing hit and run on her… definitely time for a girls night. It takes skill for an author to be able to take a few short scenes and give you such a fully developed sense of who and what her characters are about. Although you don’t get a whole lot of wooing, what you get is distilled and powerful. If you haven’t guessed, Athol is so not out of the picture. Expect a few twists. As I said, I totally enjoy Ms. Roth’s stories. If you are looking for a great blend of fantasy, paranormal and romance then the Druid series will definitely fill the bill.*****Reviewed for Xtreme-Delusions*****

A Druid Of Her Own : Immortal Highlander Book 4 By Robin Manor A Druid of Her Own is the fourth book in Mandy Roth's magical paranormal series of Immortal Highlanders. This book focuses on Kennard one of the O'Caha Druids. His clan has been saving humans from demons, evil creatures and dark magic for hundreds of years. Presently on a quest to rid the mortal world of the evil Sorcerer Athol Kennard and his twin cousins Cillian and Liam hop on their motorcycles to seek him out. When they finally locate him and he is reduced to ashes Kennard thinks that was a bit to easy and something isn't quite right. of this three very hunky alpha Druid team Kennard is the more serious voice of reason while the twins provide backup with some fun and humor. Liam in particular is a very loose cannon, can't wait for his book. The three Druids bike their way into a small town not only celebrating bikers week but also Xmas in July. Coincidentally this is also a town Kennard has been to before where he encountered a the evil Athol some twenty years ago. Suddenly drawn to a striking red head by a coffee shop he finds himself making his way back there to further pursue this strange attraction.Maggie, the red head that owns the coffee shop is my type of girl. When not running her coffee shop or chasing evil demons and vampires with her bestie Maria, she is reading romance novels and wishing that sexy gorgeous man on the cover would come to life and claim her. Maggie has magical powers, she is a witch, but since she had alarmed the town years ago about bad snake men in her dreams she's learned to keep that part of herself hidden. Other than her shifter friend Maria no one knows her secrets, unfortunately the townsfolk had already nicknamed her "Mad Maggie."So when a book cover worthy man walk into her shop and kisses her Maggie doesn't quite know what to think. One thing she does know is there is a strong attraction and strange forces between them.Another awesome novella from Ms. Roth who has once again written a wonderful story filled with paranormals, magic, romance, suspense, excitement, danger, humor and just the right amount of hotness to round the story out. Love this series and can't wait for book number 5.
