The racialized and exoticized cult of Voodoo occupies a central place in the popular image of the Crescent City. But as Kodi A. Roberts argues in Voodoo and Power, the religion was not a monolithic tradition handed down from African ancestors to their American-born descendants. Instead, a much more complicated patchwork of influences created New Orleans Voodoo, allowing it to move across boundaries of race, class, and gender. By employing late nineteenth and early twentieth-century first-hand accounts of Voodoo practitioners and their rituals, Roberts provides a nuanced understanding of who practiced Voodoo and why.

Voodoo in New Orleans, a mélange of religion, entrepreneurship, and business networks, stretched across the color line in intriguing ways. Roberts s analysis demonstrates that what united professional practitioners, or workers, with those who sought their services was not a racially uniform folk culture, but rather the power and influence that Voodoo promised. Recognizing that social immobility proved a common barrier for their patrons, workers claimed that their rituals could overcome racial and gendered disadvantages and create new opportunities for their clients.

Voodoo rituals and institutions also drew inspiration from the surrounding milieu, including the privations of the Great Depression, the city s complex racial history, and the free-market economy. Money, employment, and business became central concerns for the religion s practitioners: to validate their work, some began operating from recently organized Spiritual Churches, entities that were tax exempt and thus legitimate in the eyes of the state of Louisiana. Practitioners even leveraged local figures like the mythohistoric Marie Laveau for spiritual purposes and entrepreneurial gain. All the while, they contributed to the cultural legacy that fueled New Orleans s tourist industry and drew visitors and their money to the Crescent City.

When the Apache wars ended in the late nineteenth century, a harsh and harrowing time began for the Western Apache people. Living under the authority of nervous Indian agents, pitiless government-school officials, and menacing mounted police, they knew that resistance to American authority would be foolish. But some Apache families did resist in the most basic way they could: they resolved to endure. Although Apache history has inspired numerous works by non-Indian authors, Apache people themselves have been reluctant to comment at length on their own past. Eva Tulene Watt, born in 1913, now shares the story of her family from the time of the Apache wars to the modern era. Her narrative presents a view of history that differs fundamentally from conventional approaches, which have almost nothing to say about the daily lives of Apache men and women, their values and social practices, and the singular abilities that enabled them to survive. In a voice that is spare, factual, and unflinchingly direct, Mrs. Watt reveals how the Western Apaches carried on in the face of poverty, hardship, and disease. Her interpretation of her people’s past is a diverse assemblage of recounted events, biographical sketches, and cultural descriptions that bring to life a vanished time and the men and women who lived it to the fullest. We share her and her family’s travels and troubles. We learn how the Apache people struggled daily to find work, shelter, food, health, laughter, solace, and everything else that people in any community seek.Richly illustrated with more than 50 photographs, Don’t Let the Sun Step Over You is a rare and remarkable book that affords a view of the past that few have seen before—a wholly Apache view, unsettling yet uplifting, which weighs upon the mind and educates the heart.

Review "Her voice is a pleasure to listen to—kind, observant, with a this-too-shall-pass quality." —Los Angeles Times"Readers will find her unaffected honesty as enlightening as it is refreshing." —San Diego Union-Tribune"This outstanding account of an Apache woman remembering her family stories is a gem." —CHOICE Magazine“Her voice rings so clearly in the stories about three generations of her family that reading her words is almost as good as sitting at her kitchen table.” —Western Historical Quarterly

From the Inside Flap When the Apache wars ended in the late nineteenth century, a harsh and harrowing time began for the Western Apache people. Eva Tulene Watt, born in 1913, now shares the story of her family from the time of the Apache wars to the modern era, particularly offering a wealth of observations about the early part of the twentieth century--a dark and turbulent time when the Apaches' treatment as wards of the U.S. government left much to be desired. The largest body of historical accounts yet set down by a White Mountain Apache person, Mrs. Watt's narrative presents a view of history that differs fundamentally from conventional approaches, which have almost nothing to say about the daily lives of Apache men and women, their values and social practices, and the singular abilities that enabled them to survive. In a voice that is spare, factual, and unflinchingly direct, Mrs. Watt reveals how the Western Apaches carried on in the face of poverty, hardship, and disease. Her interpretation of her people's past is a diverse assemblage of recounted events, biographical sketches, and cultural descriptions that bring to life a vanished time and the men and women who lived it to the fullest. We share her and her family's travels and troubles. We learn how the Apache people struggled daily to find work, shelter, food, health, laughter, solace, and everything else that people in any community seek. We also gain new insight into how events such as the Great Depression and World War II affected the Apaches--and a new appreciation of the changing face of America as seen from a non-mainstream perspective. Richly illustrated with more than 50 photographs, Don't Let the Sun Step Over You is a rare and remarkable book that affords a view of the past that few have seen before--a wholly Apache view, unsettling yet uplifting, which weighs upon the mind and educates the heart. It is an exceptional work in Native American culture, history, and historiography that will be of lasting value not only to scholars in a wide range of disciplines but also to general readers interested in Native American lifeways.

About the Author A renowned moccasin maker and storyteller, Eva Tulene Watt is cultural advisor to the Nohwike Bagowa, the White Mountain Apache tribe's cultural center, was a charter member of the tribe's cultural advisory board, and also served as a key advisor to the Western Apache Place Names Survey. A recipient of the Arizona Indian Living Treasure Award, she lives with her son's family near Hon-Dah on the Fort Apache Reservation in Arizona. Keith Basso, whom Eva Watt invited to record her narrative, is University Regents Professor of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico and a leading expert on Apache culture, language, and history. Among his books are Wisdom Sits in Places: Landscape and Language Among the Western Apache, winner of the Western States Book Award, the Victor Turner Prize, and the J. I. Staley Prize; Portraits of 'the Whiteman': Linguistic Play and Cultural Symbols among the Western Apache; and Western Apache Language and Culture.

As a member of the White Mountain Apache living in Indiana with my four boys it made them proud of their heritage and as each of them read out loud the look on each of their faces as Eva describes places on the reservation they knew the exact place she was talking about. Their great grandma who is still alive in Whiteriver use to tell them a lot of similiar stories Eva talks about, the Soldiers in Fort Apache, and just life in general in the early 1900's seeing it in print just made the experience of reading the book as a family was just awesome!! as my 6 year old stated when we asked if he liked the book.

Later I found out, from my grandparents that Eva was a distant relative to me. She mentions her uncles, one of them is John Lupe; my great-great grandfather. I loved this book and was completely taken in by her stories. This book has become a treasure to me and the rest of my family's members.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An enjoyable, fun story loaded with serious cultural information. By Virgil Alexander, Author "The Wham Curse" This book is a verbatim transcription of Mrs. Watt's interviews and stories of Apache life after the end of the Indian Wars and the modern reservation period. It is both an oral history and a revelation of Apache culture, tradition, belief, and lifestyle. As a person who has Apache friends and has enjoyed the opportunity to do volunteer work and teach college classes on the San Carlos Reservation, it was delightful to read the story in the Apache accented English, with it's distinctive word usage and cadence. It was also exciting to get a glimpse of Apache home life from her childhood, before the traditional lifestyle was diluted by the reservation, technology, and the influence of American society.Keith H. Basso, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at UNM, has done a masterful job of allowing the story to be a truly Apache story both in viewpoint and the enigmatic way of the Apache to leave some things unsaid but implied. There are a few places in the narration where he adds a bit of explanation, but most clarification is given in end notes at the end of the book. This is certainly not a typical scholarly paper, but an accurate engaging real life story of drama, humor, love, hardship, and survival all told in Eva Watt's upbeat and energetic style. This book was fun to read, yet in a number of places inspired me to do more research on things that were not major events in the story, but opened questions I wanted to answer. A great book on several levels, this "good read" is now a valuable part of my research library.

Sophia looks & acts like she has been hit by lightening. But truthfully, Des is not too far behind!! I loved every page of this too short beginning and hated for it to stop for now. But we leave on a up note, so that is terrific. I suggest everyone start grabbing this series now, while its 'green.' Another great adventure from Ava Claire again By Jamie Mounts Ava Claire as always done it again in this new series on the kinky side of love and lust. Although I miss Jacob and Leila, Desmond and Sophia have the same exact connection. I can see a lot of the power couple in this new couple. Sophia is a entertainment reporter looking for her big break after her break up with the man she spent her college years with that also cheated on her making her give up on love and Desmond has it all but dealing with the losing the love of his life and now only wants the D/s relationship with no strings attached. Sophia goes undercover at Desmond's BDSM club Hush to get her big story but has trouble being the submissive she is acting to be but once Desmond lays eyes on her after she puts another Dom in he's place and he's world starts to change. One look at Desmond and Sophia is ready to submit to him and him only. I can't wait to see where this adventure takes us. Who is going to change their mind about love? Will sophia submit completely? Will Desmond be able to let Caity go finally and move on with his life? All questions we are waiting for answers too. I can wait till the next book comes out.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The start of a great new series By A. J. Powers I really like this storyline and am looking forward to more. I love Desmond and cannot wait to learn what happened in his past that continues to haunt him. I cannot wait to see how far he pushes Sophia. I like Sophia alot but I loved her when she showed how clearly she was fascinated by the BDSM stuff in the room and how excited she got from his touch, it felt like we were seeing the real Sophia. I am curious to see what happens with her co-worker Peter, not sure what is up with that. I also can already see where there is going to be some major issues down the line with her and Desmond having any kind of relationship due to her job and her recent assignment, can't wait to see how that unfolds. I love everything Ava writes and once again she has written another winner.

Sons of the Sun: Rise and Decline of the Fifth Dynasty, by Miroslav Verner

Review This well-researched study explores the complicated histroy of the royal line of Egypt's Fifth Dynasty. Using extensive archaeological evidence, as well as current theoretical opinion, Verner examines the political instability at the end of the Fourht Dynasty, the questions surrounding the lineage of the Fifth Dynasty kings, the dynamic changes that occurred throughout the period of the Funerary and Sun cults, and the development of the Pyramid complexes. A comprehensive and insightful work for those with a special interest in the Old Kindgom. -- Caitlin McCall Current World Archaeology

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Best By qalmaq Perhaps nobody knows more about the Vth Dynasty than Miroslav Verner. His archaeological work makes the term hands-on truly meaningful. This volume is what many have been waiting for. It is a detailed, closely argued and well supported evaluation of a highly interesting, very important period of change in the political and religious structure. Dr. Verner presents all the material relevant to the topic. He sites everyone who has written about it, comments on the various theories and makes his own arguments for why he supports one theory over another. There are lots of lacunae and areas of uncertainty. He makes sure the reader understands what is what. The illustrations could be better, but that is a publishing matter, not a problem of the author. This is an exception volume and, if there is an interest, a must have.

Excellent study of the Fifth Dynasty kings By JLee in this book, Verner brings together all the latest information available on the Fifth Dynasty based not only on the extensive Czech excavations at Abusir and Abu Ghurob, but also research by others. It is an invaluable resource and highly recommended for those interested in this fascinating, complex and confusing period. The first section of the book is entitled "The End of the Fourth Dynasty: What Went Wrong?"It includes the following chapters:Living Kings (a reign-by-reign chronology);Eternal Kings (the business of mortuary monuments and their provisioning and upkeep);Feast Days in Mortuary and Sun Temples;Standard and Improvisation: Remarks on the Development of the Pyramid Complex in the Fifth DynastySun Temples, andSanctuary mrt and the Royal Cult. The final section is entitled, "The Fifth Dynasty – a Time of Changes."As is usual with publications from Charles University in Prague, most of the illustrations are small and in black and white, but of high resolution and excellent black and white contrast.

At the height of the Jazz Age, Millicent, or Milly, moves from a small town to the big city with the hopes of striking it big, and ends up working at a nightclub, paying her bills with her enchanting voice. And enchanting it truly is, catching the attention of two eligible young men -- Jackson and Albert, who are as strong as they are handsome. Thus, the competition for Milly's attention begins, and only escalates as the two men compete for her heart, but they have a secret even she doesn't know, a secret they share only with each other, the full moon, and the rest of their packs...

Interview with the Author:

Q – So, what makes your shifter romances special? A – It’s a mixture of things, actually. When I started writing these books, I wanted to create a series of books that I would love to read. I love paranormal romances and shifter love stories, but I also love books with some action, danger, suspense, and a strong female character. I try to roll all of these interests into my books. My shifter books are a mix of romance, sex, longing, danger, and mystery. I also try to create some really memorable settings, whether it be historical, fantasy, or present-day, that I hope readers will enjoy. Q – What else do you like to write? A – I love other paranormal genres, such as vampires, psychics, and ghosts. I have a vampire/psychic suspenseful romance series, called Remembering Raven. These books take place in New Orleans where there is an evil vampire orchestrating murders of young women. The psychic heroine and her vampire soul mate re-connect after being separated centuries ago to try to solve the murders. There are six books in the series, including the free prequel. They are called: - Remembering Raven: Always Mine - Remembering Raven: Cheyenne - Remembering Raven: Sabine - Remembering Raven: Allegra - Remembering Raven: Nanette, and - Remembering Raven: Juliana Thanks for reading!

By Sue Kay Davis I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK FOR AN HONEST REVIEW AND THIS IS MY HONEST OPINION .... OVER 18 Milly (Millicent) Brown is a singer in the speakeasy downstairs from where she lives. Then one night she notices two men staying on opposite sides of the room , but both watching her. After her set Jackson Leonardo ask to get her a drink and ask if she would dance, but Albert Johansson tried to cut in, she kept the trouble down in her own way, at that time. But that wouldn't be the end of the problems, fight in the speakeasy causing Milly to refuse to see either. Being strong headed guys (alphas) they then decide to take it out to the country just the two of them and their seconds to fight it out on the full moon as it was intended. Jackson made arrangements with his strongest wolves at what they should do if he didn't win. So he would know they had some place to go and live well, then he waited. The fight would lead to ones death but not my the other. When morning comes and they change back , orders are given about what to do with the dead and what would happen next. Then the survivor goes to tell Milly not knowing what will happen then.

By Shirleyjt2003 I was given this book for an honest review, so here is my review, this book is about the is 18 year old Milly who sings at night in a club below her apartment, although her mom has no clue about it, she also has a day job in retail. one night while singing she looks and notices these two men who are staring at her and one ask if he can buy her a drink and then for a dance, and while they are dancing the other one opts to cut in and they settle for her finishing her dance with Jackson with a promise the next dance will be with Albert. Well the two men both want to be with Milly and a fight breaks out at the club between their two packs and this causes alot of trouble for Milly, which leads to a fight of the two men, and the winner wins the prize which is Milly and the other has to leave town with his pack, now Milly is mad at both men and tells them to stay away from her, so what happened? Well I guess you will have to read it for yourself to find out!!! Happy reading ya'll!!

By Amazon Customer Millicent *Millie* Brown, works by day in a department store selling men's clothing, and on the weekends ( I assume ) singing in a hidden speakeasy, where she meets two handsome but very different men, Jackson and Albert. Jackson is bold and has no problem in going for what he wants. Albert is more of a refind gentleman. The following weekend Millie is sing, the speakeasy is full. Jackson and Albert are both there along with their packs. Somehow a pwithh is thrown and the fight is on. Millie is so angry that she refuses to have anything to do with either man. So the men agree to settle it between themselves. The winner, well is there ever truly a winner? You will have to read the book to find out. I was very impressed with Ms. Lacey story line, it was humorous, Ms. Mille is a wee bit of a spit fire.....lol Another hit for Ms. Edward. I recommend this highly. I was given a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Review "The book separates artists away from their history-making songs and symphonies, and brings us closer to their human experiences, if for just a fleeting moment." - Cool Hunting"...as one makes his or her way through The Musician Says, something seems to happen...Quotes are not thrown in randomly. Instead they are juxtaposed on opposite pages with clear intent, offering supporting or competing views of a similar experience...Use The Musician Says as coffee table reference or cover-to-cover read. Either way, it works." - Under the Radar"Thanks to the newly released book, The Musician Says, compiled by Benedetta LoBalbo, we found some damn good reasons to make it through to next season with confidence and bravado." - Glamour

It's beautifully crafted and includes a ribbon bookmark for your favorite quote. I have it on my bedside table and will turn to it often. It will make a perfect gift for music lovers of any age. I'm so glad I bought it!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Musician Says hits all the right notes By Mary Vettel Ms. LoBalbo has done her homework in creating this fascinating compilation of quotes, quips and words of wisdom from Mose Allison to Hans Zimmer. Her clever use of juxtaposition in comparing Vladimir Horowitz to Billy Joel's pre-concert rituals, Mozart vs. Tommy Ramone on keeping time, and Chrissie Hynde vs. Cher on Cher. Some remarks are lighthearted, some are serious, and others are deep and thought provoking. The Musician Says has something for every music lover to enjoy. A nice gift idea, but keep one for yourself.
