“An altogether path-breaking collection of riveting essays.”—Robert A. Hill, Editor in Chief of The Marcus Garvey & UNIA Papers

“A fascinating, original, and much-needed history of the development of Black Power on the various islands of the Caribbean. By moving the center of the analysis away from the United States, this collection raises important new questions about the rise and impact of Black Power.”—Stephen Tuck, author of We Ain’t What We Ought to Be

“The little-understood role of the Afro-Caribbean Left in the English-speaking islands receives a powerful dose of insight here.”—Paul Buhle, author of C.L.R. James: The Artist as Revolutionary

“A scintillating addition to Black Power’s vibrant historiography. While its geographic focus is relatively small, its implications for our understanding of black radical politics could not be broader. It proves beyond a doubt that Black Power was a truly transnational phenomenon.”—Joe Street, author of The Culture War in the Civil Rights Movement

“Most case studies of the Black Power phenomenon which swept through the Caribbean islands in the seventies focus mainly on one or two Caribbean islands.  The value and importance of Kate Quinn’s book is that it marshals studies drawn from as far south as Trinidad and Tobago to others as far North as Jamaica and Bermuda. It also has the advantage of looking at cultures and languages other than English. The book is a must-read.”—Selwyn Ryan, author of Eric Williams, The Myth and the Man

Black Power studies have been dominated by the North American story, but after decades of scholarly neglect, the growth of “New Black Power Studies” has revitalized the field. Central to the current agenda are a critique of the narrow domestic lens through which U.S. Black Power has been viewed and a call for greater attention to international and transnational dimensions of the movement. Black Power in the Caribbean highlights the unique origins and causes of Black Power mobilization in the Caribbean and its relationship to Black Power in the United States, ultimately situating the historical roots and modern legacies of the movement in a wider, international context.

2015 Reprint of 1900 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. From about 1870 onwards, Massey became increasingly interested in Egyptology and the similarities that exist between ancient Egyptian mythology and the Gospel stories. He studied the extensive Egyptian records housed in the Assyrian and Egyptology section of the British Museum in London where he worked closely with the curator, Dr. Samuel Birch, and other leading Egyptologists of his day, even learning hieroglyphics at the time the Temple of Horus at Edfu was first being excavated. This collected edition brings together 10 of his most famous lectures: The historical Jesus and mythical Christ. Paul as the Gnostic opponent of Peter, not an apostle of historic Christianity. The logia of the Lord, or pre-historic sayings ascribed to Jesus the Christ. Gnostic and historic Christianity. The Hebrew and other creations fundamentally explained. The devil of darkness in the light of evolution. Man in search of his soul during fifty thousand years, and how he found it. The seven souls of man and their culmination in Christ! The coming religion.

In "The Meddling Duke", His Grace, the Duke of Danby is up to his holiday matchmaking meddling with his two unwed granddaughters! ***These two novellas are previously published Danby novellas. Winning a Lady's Heart was previously published in "A Summons From The Castle". Winning a Lady's Heart For Lady Alexandra, being the source of a cold, calculated wager is bad enough...but when it is waged by Nathaniel Michael Winters, 5th Earl of Pembroke, the man she's in love with, it results in a broken heart, the scandal of the season, and a summons from her grandfather--the Duke of Danby. To escape Society's gossip, she hurries to her meeting with the duke, determined to put memories of the earl far behind. Except the duke has other plans for Alexandra...plans which include the 5th Earl of Pembroke! A Season of Hope Five years ago when her love, Marcus Wheatley, failed to return from fighting Napoleon’s forces, Lady Olivia Foster buried her heart. Unable to betray Marcus’s memory, Olivia has gone out of her way to run off prospective suitors. At three and twenty she considers herself firmly on the shelf. Her father, however, disagrees and accepts an offer for Olivia’s hand in marriage. Yet it’s Christmas, when anything can happen… Olivia receives a well-timed summons from her grandfather, the Duke of Danby, and eagerly embraces the reprieve from her betrothal. Only, when Olivia arrives at Danby Castle, she realizes the Christmas season is a time of hope, second chances, and even miracles.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 Stars - Sweet stories in the Duke of Danby series By amtmcm I've read several of the Duke of Danby stories by Ava Stone and Jane Charles and enjoyed the premise, so it was nice to read a few more of these stories by a favorite author. The premise is based on an autocratic and seemingly omniscient duke who summons his numerous grandchildren to his castle at Christmastide so he can play matchmaker. These two short stories are about Lady Alexandra and Lady Olivia who are sisters.Winning a Lady's Heart - 4 starsLady Alexandra is heartbroken when she discovers Lord Pembroke has wagered against them getting married. She creates an embarrassing scandal and is relieved to be summoned to her grandfather's castle in Yorkshire to escape the London gossip. Very likable characters and I could feel their hearts breaking over their split. The story lost momentum for me during their reconciliation - it felt flat and rushed. They have a brief conversation and all is forgiven. I was just expecting something different, especially after all the emotional lead up to this point. But it's still a good story, it's well written and I was happy to root for these lovely characters getting their HEA.A Season of Hope - 5 starsCaldwell always does an excellent job of pulling me into her stories and turning on the emotions to make my eyes well up with tears. This story includes an injured soldier with a beauty and the beast / second chance theme, but I never tire of this storyline and it's particularly well written. Lady Olivia has waited five years for the man she loves to return from war, but her father is insisting it's time she move on and marry his 60 year old friend. She's relieved to receive a summons to her grandfather's castle to spend Christmastide with him. Will the Duke of Danby play matchmaker again? There was nothing I disliked about this story and thoroughly enjoyed it.** Sweet and clean romances.

By Teatime and Books Reviews Book 1 Winning a Lady’s Heart:We are first met by Alexandra and Nathan in the parlor of Alexandra’s home. Alexandra is deeply in love with Nathan but alas he no longer returns those feelings. He leaves her, breaking her heart and utterly devastating her. She soon learns of a wager he’s made at Whites that tarnishes her reputation but what tarnishes it further is when she confronts him some weeks later at a high society ball. She’s wrought with hurt and is dragged out by her shocked, yet comforting mother. The Christmas season is near but Alexandra’s heart feels as cold as the fallen snow and colder still when she is summoned to her grandfathers, the Duke of Danby’s castle for Christmas. After her family’s long travels, Alexandra wants nothing more than to disappear under the covers of her warm bed when she is called to see the duke immediately. Fearing his rage and disappointment about her recent scandal, she shakenly but courageously goes to his office. However, to her surprise he talks of love and her true feelings for Nathan are expressed. Her grandfather calls in another of his guests and Alexandra turns to see before her, Nathan and her heart stops. Why did the Duke of Danby invite Nathan and his granddaughter? Will Nathan and Alexandra rekindle their love? Or will their love fall like the Christmas snow?Book 2 A Season of Hope:We meet Olivia curled up in the window seat of her room watching the falling snow. She’s reflecting on her age of three and twenty and that another season has passed and to her father’s disappointment, she’s not married. Her mother comes to her room and she and Olivia discuss her father’s desire for her to wed. Olivia does not want to wed for her heart belongs to another, Marcus Wheatley who went off to war five years before and has been presumed dead. She and Marcus loved each other very deeply and she made a promise to him and has pushed off all other suitors that is until now. Her father has offered her hand to a Lord Wellesley. However, to Olivia’s surprise and relief, she’s been summoned by her grandfather, the Duke of Danby’s castle for Christmastide. She and only she has been summoned. The Duke of Danby is in his office and is talking with his employee, a dark haired man with a patch over his eye and scars marking his face. He is informed by the duke that they are expecting a very special guest, his granddaughter, Olivia. A carriage draws up and Olivia enters the castle only to be whisked immediately to her grandfather’s office. There she not only meets the duke but also hiding in the shadows is none other than her long lost love, Marcus Wheatley. What game is the duke playing now? Will Olivia and Marcus rekindle their love like the fire in the great hall or will Olivia be forced to marry Lord Wellesley and live with only her memories?Christi Caldwell’s writing is impeccable, she takes the reader on an enchanting ride back in time to the age of Lord’s and Lady’s and of course one rascally Duke. What more romantic than at the most magical time of the year, Christmas, where love reawakens and sparkles just as the candles upon the yew tree. Caldwell’s characterization and plot development are so rich and one can’t help but fall in love with the young lovers in both stories. These stories are sweet, deeply romantic and so very enchanting. You will want to be sure to add this to your Christmas list this season and read these again and again each Christmastide!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love, LOVE, LOVE!!! By Amazon Customer The characters in these two darling tales will first show you heart break, then the triumph of love, all the while celebrating the season. All Christi Caldwell stories have similarities. The differences are what make the stories, and the characters make the differences. These characters grow fast, fill out fully, and finally, find their futures in the glorious background of the Christmas season in Regency England.

I learned new hand positions to use while drawing as well as toning and shading my drawing. There’s also a step by step procedures on how to do portrait drawing, drawing from memory and dealing with drawing mistakes. It was fun to try the suggestions given as well I think. This is something I can share with my son who also likes to draw.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Binding with my son! By Ryan I got this book for both me and my son. He's been showing an interest in drawing and we would really like to encourage him with it. Personally though I am not a creative person so I thought it would be a great idea for the both of us to bond over drawing. Eva's book has been a big help in even making my personal drawings bearable.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Oh. My. God. This. Book. S#cks. By The Wizard of Oz Seriously, this is the ultimate guide to drawing funny cartoons? It reads like a book of instructions on how to put together something from Ikea. The handful of basic illustrations look like they are taken from Pixar's website. Nuff said. PS Five star reviews? Uggghhh. PPS I am a professional cartoonist living in Australia. My advice is to save your money (I downloaded this book while it was free) and spend it on a pen and some paper and just draw. PPPS Any down votes of my review will have come via one FB group or another. Ignore them. This book really does s#ck the big one.

Best PDF Ebook Online Muhammad Ali: A Man of Many Voices (Routledge Historical Americans), by Barbara L. Tischler

Muhammad Ali was not only a champion athlete, but a cultural icon. While his skill as a boxer made him famous, his strong personality and his identity as a black man in a country in the midst of the struggle for civil rights made him an enduring symbol. From his youth in segregated Louisville, Kentucky, to his victory in the 1960 Olympics, to the controversy that surrounded his conversion to Islam and refusal of the draft during the Vietnam War, Ali's life was closely linked to the major social and political struggles of the 1960s and 70s. The story of his struggles, failures, and triumphs sheds light on issues of race, class, religion, dissent, and the role of sports in American society that affected all Americans.

In this lively, concise biography, Barbara L. Tischler introduces students to Ali's life in social and political context, and explores his enduring significance as a symbol of resistance. Muhammad Ali: A Many of Many Voices offers the perfect introduction to this extraordinary American and his times.

"Muhammad Ali: A Man of Many Voices is a clearly written and accessible synthesis that provides students with a broad and life-spanning introduction to a significant athlete who impacted the world beyond the ring."

-Michael Ezra, author of Muhammad Ali: The Making of an Icon

"Muhammad Ali: A Man of Many Voices does a fine job of taking us through the Champ's life, including fine descriptions of his fights. Barbara Tischler ably describes one of the greatest sports careers of the twentieth century, but far more, she shows us why Muhammad Ali mattered, still matters. If any man defined his times--turbulent, painful, wild times--it was Ali, and Tischler shows us how and why."

-Elliott Gorn, author of The Manly Art and co-author of A Brief History of American Sports (with Warren Goldstein)

"With a balanced mix of primary sources and secondary literature, Barbara Tischler has written an accessible and approachable account about the greatest athlete of this generation, Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Ali: A man of Many Voices, is a reader friendly text that accurately captures the social significance and complex life of ‘The Greatest.’"

-Louis Moore, Associate Professor of History, Grand Valley State University

About the Author Barbara L. Tischler is the Head of the Speyer Legacy School in New York City.

This book does an amazing job of capturing Ali's life and is very detailed in the significant events that led to his becoming a cultural icon. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone as it was very educational about a man who was famous, but not well understood.

In high school, Melody Joy's boyfriend had rated her a 10 on the Marriageable Mormon Maiden desirability scale. She did everything on the check list, walked the walk and talked the talk, and had three marriage proposals in the space of one short summer. It was simply a matter of choosing, and choose she did. When MJ married Walter, he said “I Do” and she thought he meant it. After all, when Mormons get married in the temple, it’s for keeps: happily-ever-after lasts forever. Then Lacey - six feet tall and built like a Barbie Doll - came along and snagged Walter's attention. When MJ discovered that the one person she had trusted with her heart and her eternal soul was actually a treacherous, lying cheat, she had to decide what to do. The church discouraged divorce, she didn't want to do jail time, and she couldn't afford a hit-man. What other options are left when your fairy-tale marriage is in serious trouble? Follow MJ's adventures in this three-part journey of self-discovery as she sorts out her priorities, learns how to protect her heart, and uncovers things about herself and her LDS family she never knew she needed to know.

Fool Me Once: Melody Joy's Personal Mystery (Book One), by Malena Crockett

About the Author Malena Crockett is a recovering fairy tale princess and a story keeper: She writes fiction, but her stories are true. Taking inspiration from historical records, archives, published journals, and other sources, she weaves literary narratives about the messy, mysterious, and complex human entanglements involved in living a religiously devout life. Like most humans, Crockett’s characters can be naïve, vulnerable, and flawed, but they are more often strong, smart, and courageous, and have to rely on intuition and heart to work through the challenges and mysteries life presents. But isn't that what life is about? After all, it is good to stay busy busy while we're waiting around to get into heaven. * Having lived for many years in both the Mormon corridor and the Bible belt, Malena now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her beloved human, canine, and feline family.

Page turning read of a woman's struggle with a pathetic hsuband By Roanld Tenney Not being one to read many novels, this book was a fun departure for me. I came across an old friend that recommended this book. Sharing much of the background and culture with the main protagonist, I was very interested to see how this story played out.MJ feels trapped by a culture that promoted marriage to the “right guy” and in the “right place” at the “right time”. Her attraction to Walter was real enough, but for some reason she was blind to the nature of Walter’s self-centeredness and even cruelty until the time of their marriage. The abuse and neglect that follows is both hard to read and so frustrating. MJ doesn’t try to justify her choices. In fact, the way the story read to me, she seems to wonder herself why she continues to forgive and try to make it “work” with Walter. In order to not spoil the plot, I will say that I wanted to move through this book quickly wondering how this was going to end. This book promises to be one of three novels moving from the present to the past and even the future. It makes me wonder how her life will turn out. There are many unresolved issues and challenges facing MJ and her only son, Christopher. An LDS reader may find himself recoiling at the criticism directed at the culture of the church. I viewed her story as one person’s authentic experience or interpretation of her life through the lens of her family, her church and her difficult and often unproductive choices. I am cheering for MJ in her future books.

Deep Internal Strength By Linda H Rather than pity MJ--her fairy tail shattered by a cheating, lying, stupid husband, she is to be applauded for not wallowing in self-pity. We’re treated to her eloquent discourse as she reasons soundly with herself, and exhibits tremendous self-restraint while expressing clear terms of change for her husband.A masterfully written story that refuses to sink to bitter diatribe, yet skillfully balances considerations of child welfare, religious constraints, financial burdens, and care for a spouse who no longer deserves such compassion. An inspiration, and sometimes blueprint, for women who are dealing with a cheating spouse while trying to keep the household afloat as well as their own sanity intact.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent story! By Amazon Customer If you know anything about growing up in a structured religious family, you know just what sort of frustration and turmoil this character is going through. There will be those that give a one-star simply because they believe the author is attacking the foundation of the church, so you should dismiss those reviews. This is a well established, knee-jerk reaction from those still under the LDS spell. This is a well written, descriptive story about one woman's struggle to break the bonds on the establishment and save herself and her child from a destructive relationship and start anew. Whatever it takes. Love this story!
