Crassostrea virginica, the eastern oyster. These humble bivalves are the living bones of the Chesapeake and the ecological and historical lifeblood of the region. When colonists first sailed these impossibly abundant shores, they described massive shoals of foot-long oysters. But the bottomless appetite of the Gilded Age and great fleets of skipjacks took their toll. Disease, environmental pressures and overconsumption decimated the population by the end of the twentieth century. While Virginia turned to bottom-leasing, passionate debate continues in Maryland among scientists and oystermen whether aquaculture or wild harvesting is the better way forward. Today, boutique oyster farming in the Bay is sustainably meeting the culinary demand of a new generation of connoisseurs. With careful research and interviews with experts, author Kate Livie presents this dynamic story and a glimpse of what the future may hold.

Chesapeake Oysters: The Bay's Foundation and Future (American Palate), by Kate Livie

Review "Selected for its breadth of research in terms of the Bay's oyster fishery and its economic and cultural impact on the development of the Chesapeake Bay region and beyond; the importance of the topic for those who would understand the ecological impact of oystering upon the health of the Bay; author Livie's graceful prose and selection of lively anecdotes; and her valuable contribution linking the history of oystering, oystermen, politics, and the current role of aquaculture in the future of the seafood industry."Dr. William S. Dudley, Maryland Historical Society

About the Author Kate Livie is a professional Chesapeake educator, writer and historian. An Eastern Shore native, Livie is passionate about the Chesapeake Bay’s culture, heritage and landscape. She lives with her husband in Chestertown, Maryland, and to date she owns thirteen oyster knives.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. With lyrical prose and impeccable research, this book serves as THE definitive resource about the Chesapeake oyster By Marie K. Thomas With lyrical prose and impeccable research, this book serves as THE definitive resource about the Chesapeake oyster. One would think a book written about a humble bivalve would certainly be informative, but perhaps not a book that would fly off the shelves. Livie's book, however, proves this assumption wrong-- reading like historical fiction-- I found myself forgetting I was reading non-fiction. The author's uncanny ability to pull the reader into the context of the time period and weave a narrative tale made this a page turner that I finished in two days. In particular, the chapters about the Jamestown settlers felt as though I'd hopped in a time machine as Livie described the daily life, smells and missteps of these intrepid colonists.Growing up on the Eastern Shore, I've always enjoyed seafood, and oysters in particular, but I never understood the importance of their role in shaping not only the lives and land of the Chesapeake region, but the United States as a whole. As the book weaves its tale to present times, and the oyster becomes a source of intense political contention, Livie painstakingly presents multiple sides of the issue, interviewing watermen, elected officials, environmentalist and oyster farmers.Although the issue of oyster sustainability both as a possible solution to clean up the Bay and as a viable fishery continues to be a hot button issue, the author ends the book with a note of hope, offering a synopsis on how both of these goals could be accomplished.I sincerely hope this author continues to write more books about Chesapeake-related subjects, because it's clear that is where her passion lies.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A worthwhile biography of the Chesapeake Bay oyster---Highly recommended By Amazon Customer In this enlightening and honest account of the Chesapeake oyster, Kate Livie skillfully navigates the history of a bivalve that is immersed in controversy more turbid than the waters of the Chesapeake Bay itself. The opening chapters serve as a reminder of the biological and historical importance of the oyster and later chapters address the deep seeded reasons for the passionate debates about the economic, cultural, and environmental implications for our region. Kate brings each of these aspects together through her extensive research. Carefully selected from every side of the oyster conversation, the Chesapeake people highlighted in her book provide readers with the continuum of the oyster discussion. From the oyster wars of the past, to the legislative battles of modern times, to the balance between the wild fishery and oyster farming, Kate has done her research. Whether the reader is deeply immersed in current oyster discussions or simply interested in the origins of a tasty delicacy, this book makes the oyster conversation accessible to everyone. Ultimately, the book serves as a valuable reminder that the future of the Chesapeake Bay oyster is entwined with the decisions that we make as inhabitants of the region.Within my collection of Chesapeake Bay books, I put this one on the top shelf, and I am proud to say it was purchased with money made in today's oyster industry. I feel I owe that privilege to Kate, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and others who see the importance of the Bay's oyster to our environment, culture, and economy. Highly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A really wonderful read. By M. Ford I savored this book as if I were consuming the delectable oysters it describes. Deliciously written, using lyrical language to honestly present the complex ties between man and this “simple” marine staple, “Chesapeake Oysters” presents a thoroughly convincing treatise on one of the defining commodities in our history. If you are interested in history, especially that of the Chesapeake Bay, this book is a must. But more importantly, it is an interesting tale, well told, with wit and intelligence and an obvious attention to research. A really wonderful read.

Mungo Park (1771 – 1806) was a Scottish naturalist and explorer of the African continent. He was the first Westerner known to have travelled to the central portion of the Niger River. On 26 September 1794 Mungo Park offered his services to the African Association, then looking for a successor to Major Daniel Houghton, who had been sent in 1790 to discover the course of the Niger River and had died in the Sahara. Supported by Sir Joseph Banks, Park was selected. On 22 May 1795, Park left Portsmouth, England, on the brig Endeavor, a vessel trading to the Gambia for bees wax and ivory. His book Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa was a success because it detailed what he observed, what he survived, and the people he encountered. His honest descriptions set a standard for future travel writers to follow. This gave Europeans a glimpse of what Africa was really like. Park introduced them to a vast, unexplored continent. After his death public and political interest in Africa began to increase. He had proved that Africa could be explored. Perhaps the most lasting effect of Park's travels, though, was their influence on European governments. Parks writes: "My instructions were very plain and concise. I was directed, on my arrival in Africa, “to pass on to the river Niger, either by way of Bambouk, or by such other route as should be found most convenient. That I should ascertain the course, and, if possible, the rise and termination of that river. That I should use my utmost exertions to visit the principal towns or cities in its neighbourhood, particularly Timbuctoo and Houssa; and that I should be afterwards at liberty to return to Europe, either by the way of the Gambia, or by such other route as, under all the then existing circumstances of my situation and prospects, should appear to me to be most advisable.” This book originally published in 1893 has been reformatted for the Kindle and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.

Dukel Jr. Personally, I don't like Amazon's 5 star rating system, in my opinion too many people rate books 5 star, which in my mind would be a book 100% perfect in every category. To me this is practically unattainable. So I give this book a 5 star rating with reservations, I would prefer a 4 3/4 rating if this were possible. There should be a 7 star rating system, with 7 stars being practically unattainable.Having said this, this is the greatest work of travel and exploration I have ever read. And I have read the greatest, all the African greats; Burton, Baker, Stanley, Livingston, Mary Kingsley & etc., etc. Also the North American giants; Lewis & Clark, Champlain, La Salle, Jedediah Smith and the rest; and most of the South Americans of fame, Spruce, Bates, Humbolt, Dr. Richard Schultes et.al. And last but not least the the Asian explorers, such as Doughty, Thessiger, Hedin and many more. I say this so you know where I'm coming from. But "Travels into the Interior of Africa" by Mungo Park is my favorite. Read it and you may agree with me, I don't know why this book is so ignored, especially after reading so many rave reviews on Amazon on Mary Kingsley's, "Travels in West Africa" {but she deserves it}.There are heart touching as well as humorous scenes in this book especially in his encounters with African women. Park's courage, perseverance, humility, humanity and his empathy for the African peoples he encounters as well as his informative account of the exotic makes this book a great read. The "good, the bad, and the ugly" are all here, and it is written in a straightforward and manly style. To me he was truly one of the greatest explorers of all times!I have a more expensive edition of this work but it sure looks like this "Wordsworth" edition is a good buy!I've got to check out more of their titles on African exploration if any are available!

This book should be required reading for all high school graduates, since reading it would clear up many false notions connected with African/American slavery. Although Mr. Parks was anti-slavery, he plainly states that 75% of Africans were slaves to the other 25%, and that the buying and selling of slaves among Africans and the selling of slaves to Europeans were as common and natural as life itself.

Raw Gem By AC303 I read this a while ago, so I can't remember details, but it's a terrific first-person account not peppered with any conventional narrative glossing, so it's a raw gem that provides great insight into exploration before the world became much smaller.

By Amazon Customer This book was a lifesaver; it’s very thorough, teaching not only the basics but also best practices.I got this book just as I was finishing typesetting my first book (a non-fiction tome with tons of complicated formatting). I already had some knowledge of indesign and succumbed to the temptation to only skim the book. Initially, I thought some of their suggestions seemed tedious and overly-restrictive, and I only loosely followed their steps. But now, four books later, I've stumbled into all sorts of problems that I've only been able to remedy by carefully going back through the book and following their steps.I suggest you typeset your book from start to finish without deviation from any of their steps. Once your book is put together, then go through and make your own stylistic changes. They definitely know what they’re doing, and by following their carefully crafted steps, you can avoid many of the mistakes I made.

Wray As an author and self-publisher, I grappled with the problem of taking a box full of draft manuscript and turning it into something that could be sold in a bookstore. Like most authors, I knew little about the process involved in turning a manuscript into a book. At first, I hoped that a "publisher" would see the value of my work and make my manuscript into a book for me, but that didn't happen. However, faced with the choice of abandoning my dreams or publishing my own book, I chose to learn publishing and make my book a reality. More writers than ever before are choosing the path of self-publishing, and there is no better resource for guiding one along that path than, "Book Design Made Simple." I am grateful to Fiona Raven and Glenna Collett for publishing this book, a unique resource that presents all the information you need to take a book, step by step, from draft to finished product. I heartily recommend this book!!!

Well worth the investment By Kevin When I set out to design my sister's first book "My Father, In Snow", the computer screen for Adobe InDesign (the best design software) looked like the cockpit of a 767 jet. I had no idea where to start. Fortunately I stumbled onto this book, and was able to follow it step by step from beginning to end. The results were fabulous. I highly recommend "Book Design Made Simple". It is well worth the investment.

The classic account of WWI aerial combat By A Customer Eddie Rickenbacker was, of course, the top-scoring American ace of the First World War, shooting down 26 enemy aircraft. This hard-to-find book is _the_ classic account of aerial combat in World War One. It fairly breathes the cocky, pugnacious spirit of the successful combat aviator, and is, in itself, a remarkable survival story. Rickenbacker was a squadron leader of note as well as a formidable single-combat warrior, and his observations on command are applicable today. Like other great aviators who racked up impressive victories but survived, Rickenbacker was aggressive and confident but not rash. He took pains to plan his missions and to assure their success, attending to the smallest details himself (even to inspecting the individual rounds loaded for his SPAD's machine guns). Rickenbacker is a skillful narrator, and his precise description of the lethal ballet of aerial combat is readable and comprehensible for the flyer and non-flyer alike. Rickenbacker had the reputation of being overbearing at times, but this is not communicated in his writing. Indeed, one of the most memorable passages in this book describes his repeated but ultimately unsuccessful attempts to bring down a particular German observation plane. This is a wonderful book that deserves to be read. Any reader with an interest in flying, but especially combat flying, can do no better than to pick up this excellent work.

This story is the definitive acount of WWI air combat. The only books that come close are by British pilot Arch Whitehouse, but those lack the descriptions and heart of Eddie Rickenbacker's "Fighting the Flying Circus". One can almost smell the dirt and grass from the runways and see the tracer fire from the machine guns. Throughout we see the character of a simple midwestern man who became the Ace of Aces in American flying history. The individual flying episodes are memorable such as the time he refused to let an (allied) French Nieuport get behind him after he became lost on patrol. He later found out that a German pilot in a captured Neiuport was slipping across the lines to wreck havoc on the Allies. Or the time an anti-aircraft shell lodged in his engine yet failed to detonate. The story is vivid and thrilling until the end, even though we all know the larger outcome.

This race car driver turned fighter pilot wrote this he was still a young man just back from the first air war in 1919. In reading it again as an adult I was surprised to find that he was quite honest and self efacing. When he made a mistake he was forthcoming about it. In many incidents contained in this book it is obvious that luck played an enormous part in survival of pilots in those days, as the training and equipment by today's standards was to put it bluntly, inadequate. I imagine that this book is still a good one for fighter jocks of today because there are still lessons here that apply to today's combat environment. It is always easier to learn from someone else's experiences than to repeat them yourself. If you want to learn what it was like to fight in the air in the First World War this is your book. It is on a par with James McCudden's book "Flying Fury," and that is high praise indeed.Since reading this book I have read Rickenbacker's autobiography and was not nearly as impressed as I was with this book. By the 1960's Rickenbacker had mellowed and his words were carefully chosen and not nearly as spontaneous as in this book. After all, by then he had been a CEO of Eastern Airlines, and seemed more guarded about his reputation. The Kindle price of this fine book works for me!

In the center of Mantua, in northern Italy, a covered bridge stretches over the narrow Rio where vendors sell fish from pushcarts just as locals did more than two hundred years ago when Napoleon Bonaparte laid siege to the city. Four cannon balls protruding out of an adjacent wall offer a tacit monument to the sufferings of townspeople during the 1796–1797 siege, when the city, held by Austrian troops, finally fell under French control. Two years later, Mantua was again barraged, this time by a combined Austrian and Russian army, which took it back after four months. In Napoleon in Italy, Phillip R. Cuccia brings to light two understudied aspects of these trying periods in Mantua’s history: siege warfare and the conditions it created inside the city.

Drawing on underutilized military records in Austrian, French, and Italian archives, Cuccia delves into these important conflicts to integrate political and social issues with a campaign study. Unlike other military histories of the era, Napoleon in Italy brings to light the words of soldiers, leaders, and citizens who experienced the sieges firsthand. Cuccia also shows how the sieges had consequences long after they were over. The surrender and proposed court-martial of François-Philippe de Foissac-Latour, the French general in charge of Mantua in 1799, sheds new light on Napoleon’s disdain for defeat. Foissac-Latour faced Napoleon’s ire, expulsion from the army, and harsh public criticism.

Napoleon in Italy is not only the story of Mantua’s strategic importance. Mantua also symbolized Napoleon’s voracious determination to win and Austria’s desperation to retain its possessions. By placing the sieges of Mantua in an eighteenth-century international context, Cuccia introduces readers to a broader understanding of siege warfare and of how the global impacts the local.

Review

“Drawing on research in French, Austrian, private, and numerous Italian archives, Colonel Cuccia’s authoritative study of the sieges of Mantua during Napoleon’s conquest of Italy will be the standard work on the subject for decades. The author’s firsthand knowledge of the terrain, exhaustive research, and military background have enabled him to produce the definitive work on a well-known but little-studied aspect of the Napoleonic Wars.”—Michael V. Leggiere, author of The Fall of Napoleon: The Allied Invasion of France, 1813–1814

About the Author Phillip R. Cuccia is Director of European Studies in the Regional Strategy and Planning Department of the Strategic Studies Institute. He taught history at West Point and is the author of numerous articles on the Napoleonic era and the American Civil War.

Invitingly Well-Written Account Of A Campaign That Invented Modern Warfare By Paul Berg Cuccia's invitingly-written account draws you into the mind of this world changing military leader Napoleon during his crucial northern Italian offensive, where his military and political styles were tested and matured. The siege of Mantua was a template for today's wars of hearts and minds engaging whole populations, not just soldiers; the military scholar will think of Vicksburg and perhaps Falluja. Cuccia's writing is based on years of research, and it shows in his fastidious documentation and thorough annotation, what scholars value. Non-experts and mere aficionados like myself are as likely to be attracted to his clear, readable prose and supple way with a narrative; Cuccia knows how to create a convincing narrative out the big bundle of disorganized research notes he must surely have begun with. One more thing. Military education today in both the academies and the War Colleges has been migrating away from studies of classic historical figures such as Napoleon, a mistake. Reading Cuccia will convince you how Napoleon's gift for testing, reviewing and recreating strategy in the face of changing conditions on the battlefield and among the local population is as relevant to contemporary warcraft as counterinsurgency studies and Sun Tzu. A must read.

By Steve In The Sieges of Mantua, Colonel Cuccia has delivered a massive amount of historical facts placed in a wonderful and easily flowing style that engages the reader from page one. His attention to detail draws one into the region and more especially the city of Mantua under siege. The carefully placed details of what was happening inside as well as outside of the fortress lead me to a sympathetic understanding of both the protagonists and the besieged. Although the book centers on the sieges, be ready for a broad and comprehensive study of Bonaparte's campaign strategies for the entire Lombard Plain.I highly recommend this book to both lay persons (such as myself) and academics who are interested and enjoy factual history. Thanks to Colonel Cuccia for a greatly interesting and very enjoyable read.

Nikola Tesla was one of history’s greatest scientists, and though he is best known for his pioneering work with electricity, the fact that he is mostly remembered solely for that actually does a disservice to his legacy. Born a Serb in the Austrian Empire, Tesla came to the United States and worked in a laboratory for none other than the Wizard of Menlo Park, Thomas Edison. It was through his work on behalf of Edison that Tesla flourished and became a well-known figure in his own right. His work there helped him establish financial backing for his own projects, particularly the design of AC (alternating current) as a system for supplying electricity. This later put him at odds with Edison, who championed DC (direct current), but Tesla’s model would come out on top as the 19th century came to a close. Having established AC as an electrical supply system, Tesla became a global celebrity, and his devices and inventions fascinated people. Tesla tinkered with everything from X-rays to wireless communications and even attempted a primitive form of the radio. While Tesla was not able to successfully execute the devices and concepts he foresaw, his forward thinking in fields like wireless communication certainly proved prescient, and his futuristic devices and his later reputation for eccentricity helped create the “mad scientist” image that still remains a pop culture fixture. Tesla seemed to have come to grips with this aspect of his legacy late in life, noting, “The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. His duty is to lay the foundation for those who are to come, and point the way.”
