The first German immigrants arrived in Louisville nearly two hundred years ago. By 1850, they represented nearly 20 percent of the population, and they influenced every aspect of daily life, from politics to fine art. In 1861, Moses Levy opened the famed Levy Brothers department store. Kunz’s “The Dutchman” Restaurant was established as a wholesale liquor establishment in 1892 and then became a delicatessen and, finally, a restaurant in 1941. Carl Christian Brenner, an emigrant from Lauterecken, Bavaria, gained notoriety as the most important Kentucky landscape artist of the nineteenth century. C. Robert and Victoria A. Ullrich edit a collection of historical essays about German immigrants and their fascinating past in the Derby City.

By BeeRita Someone recommended this book to me when I first moved to Tucson after living "up north" all my life. I had relocated to Arizona for a job and was in somewhat of a state of culture shock at the lack of green grass, no four seasons, etc. This book was a real god-send for me. It breaks the year into 12 months and describes what is happening in the environment in terms of climate, wildlife, plant life, and the constellations. It is filled with fun-facts and things to do and watch for, so adults and children alike will find this book fun and interesting to read. It is fascinating learning about the unique-ness of the Sonoran desert and it made me really appreciate how incredible and diverse it really is! I now recommend this book to everyone (native or newcomer) and buy it regularly as a "welcome" gift to my colleagues that relocate here from other parts of the country. I highly recommend it.

During that time I roamed over much of the area, as well as the surrounding counties, looking for beetles and arachnids, bird watching, and during one very productive spring, making a plant collection for a course in systematic botany. The huge county (9000 square miles - almost nine Rhode Islands!) varies from low desert at the start of the Camino del Diablo near Ajo to high mountain forests up to over 9,000 feet elevation in the Santa Catalina Mountains above Tucson and covered with Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, bigtooth and Rocky Mountain maples, and aspen. It does indeed deserve its own book.Roseann Beggy Hanson and Jonathan Hanson have published just such book and I hardily recommend their "Southern Arizona Nature Almanac" to anyone living in or visiting the area. The book cover all sorts of subjects, many not found in other books on the areas involved. My only gripe is their lack of coverage for the Arachnida, as they seem to barely mention scorpions and spiders (mostly as food for vertebrates), while discussing rattlesnakes, lighting safety, rabies in bats, Africanized bees, and other safety issues. As an arachnologist I'm a bit prejudiced, but I do think that visitors should be warned about avoiding scorpions, violin spiders and black widows! Still this is more a personalized almanac than exactly a guidebook. Fortunately there are several excellent volumes for the Sonoran Desert (which makes up much of the county) to consult. In any case the book has a large amount of information in it on the flora, fauna and night skies of locations, such as the Buenos Aires and Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuges, Baboquivari, the Rincon Mountains, the Quinlan Mountains, and Rose Canyon Lake, among others, with which I am very familiar.Such a book is to be read and savored as a taste of places and organisms that can be seen in this remarkable county. Buy this book to get the flavor of the area and pick up a few guides (such as the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum's "A Natural History of the Sonoran Desert") and you will be well served.

From New York Time bestselling author Tricia O'Malley. The boxed set of the first four books in the Mystic Cove Series. Includes: Wild Irish Heart Wild Irish Eyes Wild Irish Soul Wild Irish Rebel Other books in the series: Wild Irish Roots: Prequel Novella Wild Irish Roots: Margaret & Sean Wild Irish Witch - January 2016 Wild Irish Heart It is time… An ancient book, a power untouched, and a heart unloved lead Keelin O'Brien from her graduate studies in Boston to a small village on the coast of Southern Ireland. Determined to unearth the secrets lying hidden in the enchanted waters of the cove, Keelin has little time for a surly Irishman who infuriates her during the day and haunts her fantasies at night. Inexplicably drawn to the woman who has stepped from his dreams and into his world, Flynn fights a stubborn battle against his increasing attraction for Keelin. Forces unknown have better plans for the two. Only the secrets of the cove can show Keelin who she really is, the beauty of her mysterious power, and a love that will break the bounds of what she knows. Wild Irish Eyes Oh, to stop the voices in her head. Other people's voices, that is. As a pub owner with an extra special gift, all Cait Gallagher craves is a moment of silence. That, and to own the building her pub is housed in along with the heart of the building's landlord, Shane MacAuliffe. Though she is irresistibly drawn to Shane, her vulnerabilities cause her to put up a tough exterior. When the two butt heads, more than sparks fly, and Cait finds herself trembling on the precipice of love. Shane has watched Cait for years. Stubborn, beautiful, and with a trim body that he is dying to get his hands on, Cait is it for him. And yet, she continues to infuriate him by walking away from his kiss. Every time. At his wits' end, Shane doesn't know what to do to make Cait his own. Unapologetic and fiercely proud, Cait must conquer her insecurities and reveal her true self to Shane or face losing everything. Wild Irish Soul Love was never her strong suit. Aislinn is used to living life on her terms. As an artist with an extra-sensory gift, she allows her moods, and those of the natural world, to inspire her paintings for her gallery set in small town Grace's Cove. Running her business as she pleases, Aislinn has danced around serious commitments her whole life. When Dr. Baird Delaney moves his psychiatry practice to town and stops by her shop to pick up some prints for his office, Aislinn's world tilts. Irresistibly drawn to his presence, yet convinced that the uptight doctor is a poor match for her free-flowing artistic soul, Aislinn is torn. Both Aislinn and Baird will have to suspend their beliefs as they tumble headfirst into a messy, unrepentant love that challenges both to accept each other unequivocally. Wild Irish Rebel A loner at heart... Morgan McKenzie has been on her own since she ran away from a nightmarish foster home at the age of sixteen. Afraid to put down roots again only to be hurt once more, Morgan prefers to be constantly on the move. Until she is inexplicably pulled to the small Irish town of Grace's Cove. Before she knows it, Morgan is settling in and forming relationships for the first time in her life. Determined to keep her walls up to protect both her heart and the touch of magick she carries, Morgan fights against her growing attraction for the town's golden boy, Patrick Kearney. Patrick can't keep his eyes off of Morgan. Since the moment he saw Morgan across the dance floor at Keelin's wedding, Patrick has been lost. Pulled in by her beauty and vulnerability, Patrick's frustration grows as his advances are continually rebuffed. As Morgan rebels against her feelings for Patrick, she is swept into a battle against her own worst demons.

Darn if I didn't stay up half the night to finish the thing and then want the rest of them and ended up reading all 6 in just over a week. I loved the gifts the women had, the stories of each were excellent and the bond that grew between all the women in these books made me feel a part of it all. Thank you Tricia O'Malley.

Must read series, just pulls you in and grabs your heart By FrostyJac Wild Irish Heart - 5 StarsI was complaining the other day to a couple of friends about how everything I’d read lately was just ok, in desperation I turned to my Kindle TBR list and opened my free copy of Wild Irish Heart, bless you Tricia O’Malley, finally something beautifully written and so capitvating I went out and purchased the boxed set as soon as I was done.A beautiful love story with a wee bit of magic and faith thrown in. I loved the interwoven connections between the generations of women and their ancestors. There was a moment or two, or three when I wanted to grab Flynn by the collar and shake some sense into him, but he came around in the end.Wild Irish Eyes - 5 StarsI loved Cait and Shanes story. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to travel through life hearing the thoughts of those around you, where would you go for silence? Although each book stands alone there is a beautiful weaving of the lives of the decendents of Grace and it was great to spend time with the other ladies.Again Shane is a little too proud at times and needs to be put in his place, but underneath is a heart of Gold and Cait is just the one to set him straight.Wild Irish Soul - 5 StarsMy favorite of all the books by far. I loved the progression through this series and each story gets a wee bit more “Irish” as we go along. I fell in love with Aislinn and the beautiful way Ms. O’Malley had of using her words to paint a picture in your mind, I cried and cried again.MINI SPOILER ALERTAislinn says to Baird at one point that she can “look” at a scene and later recreate it through memory but it doesn’t have the same impact as when she sits in nature in paints what she sees. That she paints what she “feels” not just the view. These scenes were so eloquently written that I could also feel that emotion in the scenes she wove with her words.Again we have a strong female lead character and a hero who’s a little stubborn and needs as swift kick in the seat of his pants, definetly a familiar pattern in each story, however the male characters are still likeable, if a little frustrating at times.Wild Irish Rebel - 5 StarsMorgan has had a very difficult life, it’s beautiful to watch her pulled out of her shell by her “family” of Grace sisters. Patrick is pretty open to the gifts that the women have after having worked for Cait and growing up in the Cove. Still he is put to the test and even he has some growing up and learning to do.

Again I cried and cried again, I was pulled into the story and could feel the pain and isolation that Morgan had grown up with and how difficult it was for her to accept the help and friendship of others. My heart ached for her as she re-lived the terrible things that had happened to her as a child. In the end she was forced to make a life changing decision to save someone she loved, the consequences could take away all that she had finally found, a home, love and friends.By the end of the book I couldn’t wait for more and went out and bought the rest of the series.

Tricia is such a writer. The use of Dingle as the setting strikes inspiration, provides a familiar foundation for those whom have been to Dingle. This series is a gem blending history, culture, mythology, and true life issues. If you love Ireland or just dream of visiting, this series is for you. Looking forward to next series. Sláinte.

He was pretty sure that if he said “Boo” she’d jump from the car regardless of how fast he was going. He offered up a slight smile. He couldn’t blame her really, he was aware that he could be a tad… intimidating, perhaps even overbearing at times. Okay, that was just bullshit he was intimidating most all of the time. He couldn’t help it really, it came with the territory. It was hard not to be threatening when you were a Guardian or more officially if you preferred to throw down titles which he didn’t – Vampire Guardian Assassin. He did kill people for a living. Granted they were evil, but he threw badass attitude around on a nightly basis because that’s what assholes he exterminated understood. He looked over at Jamie, so small and fragile, her injured hand lying in her lap, the other tucked up close to the door latch. As if... Jamie felt relief when he pulled the Jaguar up beside her house and killed the engine. She fumbled at the door until the mysterious tall dark and oh so handsome vampire slowly leaned his bulk across her and opened it for her. “Thanks,” she said softly, feeling suddenly warm all over at his sudden nearness and like an idiot because she couldn’t open the door herself. “I’ve never been in such a fancy car before.” He enjoyed the flush he’d brought so easily to her cheeks. “You’re welcome.” Oh my gawd he has a voice to die for. It was all she could do to not look over her shoulder like a teenager with a crush to make sure he was following her. You don’t know how right you may be little girl.

I got that the alpha needed control but seriously he constantly lie to her and treated her like what she was feeling was irrelevant to what he wanted. No thanks

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. wasn't as bad as some reviewers said By Hooked Me Made it through the book...wasn't as bad as some reviewers said...but I must admit, the heroine DID get on my nerves with her imaturity and her imature language/dialogue. I truly liked the unique approach to the vampire theme, but the heroine ruined it for me by the end.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Captivating Paranormal Romance By PURPLE JEWELS A Vampire's Garden of Stone was an enchanting tale depicting a romance between a vampire and a human woman. It's not an action packed page turner but rather an almost "realistic" depiction of the slow development of a relationship between an alpha male vampire Aerik Wolf and a mortal Jamie McPherson. Consequently, the pace is a little slow but steady. It felt like a "slow sensual burn." I tend to be an impatient reader but I found this story so charming that I never got bored despite the pace. The writing and character development are good. I liked both Aerik and Jamie. But "Oh My Gawd" Aerik was beyond sexy and his entrance when he came to the hospital was swoon worthy. " Yum, Yum I want one. "Oh my Gawd!" You'll figure out the merit behind my using this phrase twice already if you read the book. LOL Given that Aerik (by the way, sexy name) was 6'5", I still can't figure out how he fit comfortably in that awesome Bugatti Vegron. The story is told from a 3rd person POV or narrative style which I thought was very appropriate for this story. I found the plot original enough and creative to a degree. I also liked the support characters Zak was outrageous and Dare beguiling. The Dare is so sweet scenario with the proposed celebration was priceless. The little mystery that was included was quite simplistic and I surmised the identity of the villain almost immediately but that didn't hinder my enjoyment of the big reveal. The love scenes, or naughty bits as I like to call them, were pretty good but they could have been better. They lacked the level of description, prolific proses and intensity that I prefer. Some readers won't like that Aerik lies to Jamie quit a bit about certain things or that he used mind control on her several times without her knowledge. However, I felt that if one is dating a vampire the latter could happen. Moreover, given the specific circumstances surrounding these occurrences I didn't think that it was a big enough deal to get my knickers in a bunch and prevent me from enjoying the story. Some of the wording was awkward and distracting so the book loss points for that. There were also some typos and a few other grammar related problems but nothing too unbearable. There was also at least one inconsistency, i.e. during a scene Clay was drinking one of the beers that he brought over and then in the same scene he took a "drink of his water...." but there wasn't any water in the scene they were drinking beer. That error caused me to do a double take seeking clarity. These few errors were nothing compared to some of the work that independent authors publish so I didn't lower the books rating by much because of them. Because despite a few shortcoming, I enjoyed this story immensely. Hope you'll give it a shot! I plan to read the next book in the Series very soon. Since he teased Aerik mercilessly, I can't wait to see Zack tormented by love!

During the summer of 1940, Britain stood alone, defying the Luftwaffe’s aerial assault – the prelude to a proposed sea born invasion. Fighter Command faced this challenge against overwhelming odds with immeasurable courage and tenacity, the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, immortalizing these young Spitfire and Hurricane pilots as ‘The Few’. Some 2,927 aircrew comprised the ‘Few’, 544 of which made the ultimate sacrifice that fateful summer, now known as the Battle of Britain. A further 791 would perish before the war’s end.Today, precious few indeed remain alive worldwide, the Battle of Britain Fighter Association now numbering less than forty. Veteran aviation historian Dilip Sarkar, however, has spent a lifetime recording the stories of casualties and recording the memories of survivors. In this important book commemorating the Battle of Britain’s seventy-fifth anniversary, he brings us more original work, new interviews with ‘The Final Few’. This is likely to be the last such work produced, as sadly but inevitably Churchill’s Few fade from living memory.

The Final Word on "The Few" By Military Warrior Dilip Sarkar has written so many fine books about the Battle of Britain that it is hard to remember them all. This is his last book he will write about the Battle. Dilip has associated with so many of the great RAF pilots who flew in the Battle and suffered as one by one these friends and legends have passed. I greatly enjoyed this book. The volume focuses on the last surviving vets of the Battle and recounts their stories in a moving and intelligent way. Who can not be struck by the pathos of a Pilot Officer Elkington's family watching as he baled out of his aircraft during a dogfight. His mum had come out into the garden to watch the fight above and was convinced that the pilot she saw leave the aircraft was her boy. All who are interested in the Battle of Britain will relish and learn from the stories preserved in this book.

100 Years of Stanford Men's Basketball, by John Platz

Review I’m privileged to be the head coach of a college basketball program with a terrific history, and I am glad the 100-year Stanford Men’s Basketball story is being told so thoroughly and thoughtfully in John’s book. The rich portrayal of the program’s many accomplishments, as well as the occasional setbacks and how they were handled, makes me appreciate prior-era players, my predecessor coaches, and this university even more.--Johnny Dawkins, Stanford Basketball head coach (2008-present)
