From the fifteenth century onwards, as European explorers sailed forth on grand voyages of discovery, their encounters with exotic plants and animals fanned intense scientific interest. Scholars began to examine nature with fresh eyes, and pioneering artists transformed the way nature was seen and understood. In Amazing Rare Things, renowned naturalist and documentary-maker David Attenborough joins with expert colleagues to explore how artists portrayed the natural world during this era of burgeoning scientific interest.

The book focuses on an exquisite selection of natural history drawings and watercolors by Leonardo da Vinci, Alexander Marshal, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Mark Catesby, and from the collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo—works all held in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle. Attenborough and his coauthors offer lucid commentary on topics ranging from the 30,000-year history of human drawings of the natural world, to Leonardo’s fascination with natural processes, to Catesby’s groundbreaking studies that introduced Europeans to the plants and animals of North America. With 160 full color illustrations, this beautiful book will appeal to readers with interests that extend from art and science to history and nature.

Amazing Rare Things: The Art of Natural History in the Age of Discovery, by David Attenborough, Susan Owens, Martin Clayton, Rea Alexandratos

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Beginning with Leonardo da Vinci, this historical overview of scientific illustrators between the late 1400s and the mid-1700s includes beautiful, intricate specimens from the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Natural History Museum, among others. Filmmaker Attenborough provides an introductory survey of the artistic representation of plants and animals through human history; succeeding chapters focus on five figures-four artists and one collector-none of whom are well-known in either scientific or art history circles. Cassiano dal Pozzo proves an eager and curious antiquarian, a church functionary in Rome who amassed a remarkable collection of illustrations featuring everything from ancient Roman artifacts, minerals and fossils to newly discovered plants and animals. Stunning work by Alexander Marshal, Maria Sibylla Merian and Mark Catesby capture plants and animals in their natural state, including dispatches from the New World and fauna newly arrived from foreign lands. Merian proves most fascinating, working in a time (the late 15th century) when women seldom left their homes, let alone traveled unattended to South America to draw insects and plants in the jungles of Dutch Surinam. A true feast for anyone interested in natural history, this marvelous book makes the underappreciated artworks of a passionate, talented group widely accessible. Color illustrations. Exquisite Design, Beautifully Illustrated By Magdalena Bassett As a botanical illustrator, I purchased this book to learn from the masters, and be able to see these vibrantly colorful illustration in full size. I was not disappointed. The book is beautifully printed on creamy paper, the colors look true, and the design is very elegant. I have returned to it time after time to see the different details, and always find something new. It's a great addition to my botanical wonders library.

The key word is ART, not 'natural history' or 'age of discovery'. The book is in fact a series of essays about five pioneering scientific illustrators: Leonardo da Vinci, Cassiano dal Pozzo, Alexander Marshal, Maria Sibylla Merian, and Mark Catesby. I certainly don't wish to scoff at the importance of scientific illustration, or to deny that there is no true line between such illustration and fine art. I only wish the book in hand included a good deal more of the illustrations and less of the sometimes rhapsodic texts. As it happens, this is effectively a 'coffee table' book, large format, high quality paper, excellent color printing -- just the kind of book you'd give as a holiday present to an ungrateful lout like me.Added months later: Since I first looked through this book, I've become deeply impressed by and interested in the lief and work of Maria Sibylla Merian, one of the illustrator-subjects of this book. The plates of her scientific illustrations are phenomenal, and her life was as unique an adventure as that of any woman in Early Modern European history. I refer you to the biographey of her, "Chrysalis", by Kim Todd.

I was surprised to see that Leonardo Davinci's art was the worst of any artist in the book. I had heard that David Attenborough had not made enough comments in the book according to one Amazon reviewer, but I found that that was not the case. He certainly is the main author of this book.

How disappointed I was after reading this book. I personally think its an insult to the heroic efforts of those mighty souls who accomplished so much while enduring hatred and bigotry of a magnitude few of us today can imagine.I had to keep reminding myself I was supposedly reading factual accounts because it read more like a cheap novel. I'm going to purchase Hannibal B. Johnson's version in hopes of getting some indepth insight into the important events that unfolded in the town of Greenwood Oklahoma in 1921.

Was Expecting More By AllYouNeedIsLove When I came across information about this event, which I had no previous knowledge of, I was eager to read about it. I order this book thinking it would give me a lot of insight into the Tulsa Race Riot, and Black Wall Street. The book is not as factual nor as informative as I was hoping for and like previously stated by another review, reads like a cheap novel.

I originally heard about the book in an email and was so excited that I purchased it that same day! A book about such a serious topic should have been written, edited, and published in a very serious manner; it was not. While there are instances in the book where the characters' speech is written in a way so that you can understand the southern accent, there are numerous (about 3 per page) other instances where you can tell the book wasn't even spell-checked, much less checked for grammatical errors - I mean simple errors that the spell check in Word should have caught! Anyway, overall, this was a great story, but a bad read!

Earle Nelson is one of history's early "pioneer serial killers" committing more than twenty horrific murders during the 1920's. Nicknamed at the time "The Gorilla Man" for the savagery of his rape and necrophiliac murders, he targeted landladies mostly whom he met through 'room to let' classified advertisements. Nelson carried a well-worn Bible for appearance to reassure his female victims before brutally strangling them, raping their corpses, and making a cursory attempt to hide the bodies. In 1926, following the murder of Laura Beal, the newspaper reporters began calling him "the Dark Strangler." Also dubbed the "Original American Monster" Nelson killed women, not only in multiple US cities, but eventually he crossed the border into Canada where he killed several women before authorities finally arrested, convicted and executed this early serial killer. In an era before the term "serial killer" had been coined, Nelson was a serial killer as we today define them.   This book is 150 pages.    This is the 9th book in the Crimes Canada collection. Each month for 2 years, a short-read book (between 100-180 pages) will be published by RJ Parker and Dr. Peter Vronsky     View the books in this series at CrimesCanada.com

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Horrible By Marlene fabregas This book is about Earle Leonard Nelson. Back in 1920 he was a most wanted serial killer. He would obtain entrance and access to his victims by answering signs for rooms to rent. He's fascination of killing through strangulation, and other stomach turning acts made this book a real page turner. The dark strangler is the perfect name for this deranged man. Good read.

He was very manipulative and conniving in order to gain the ladies' trust. Mr. Newton did an excellent job in telling this dark tale of an evil 1920's serial killer and the author kept me interested in the story. Very welI researched. I highly recommend this book and other books by Michael Newton.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Evil evil man By Kim Jackson This book was written with great details about a man that deserved everything he had coming to him. It was full of details and short. Michael Newton has went above and beyond to find this information to make a great book. Nelson was a guy I would never want to be around. I would recommend this book to anyone. Innocent women lost their life to a horrible evil no good man.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. my favorite triptych in a long while By Tiffany "I Once Knew"... my favorite triptych in a long while. This is a woman in touch with the rio debajo el rio and the llorona and the pme and qme of herself. This is a cantadora, a griotte, and she is my sister in ways that remind me of why I got my degree in Transformative Language Arts. She is a truth-teller using the magic around us, and her amazing talent as a story spinner. I see her soul on display when I read her tales, and I see every woman unafraid to be wild. This book, and every other work I've read by Kristy Webster horrifies me, because she makes me look at myself in all my artistic nakedness (the work I have done, and have yet to do). I hate her, and I love her, as I hate and love all who carry the burden of telling, including myself. Kristy MAKES me look at my heart and my crotch, and my tears, and my power. Damn her and praise her – she makes me look.Coco is an amazing tale, and so magical it'll knock you over, but so sweet you'll dive into it, as you will all of her other short stories. Despite all of the awesome vignettes, art pieces, short and long tales, and hilarious phrases, I think "The Conscience of Spiders" is the most beautiful realization of Transformative Language Arts I've seen. It inspires me to do the work of story, of body, of myth and archetype. On par with Clarissa Pinkola Estés (and oh how I'd LOVE to sit down to tea with these two), Webster's powerful wielding of words will leave you spellbound, and begs the question - where has this awesome mind been, and how can we read more of what she is writing?!She makes me work harder to be a more honest wordsmith.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exquisite, Piercing Prose By Julie Johnson "The Doctor who fixed Maria's madness was nearly impossible to look at. Not because she was ugly, but because she was so severely handsome. Her face and body were arranged in sharp angles that sliced the air as she moved through space. When the Doctor sat in her armchair, Maria wondered if the cushions cried out when the daggers of her elbows sunk into them." From "Graduation"Story after story crafted in this exquisite, piercing prose. Kristy Webster invites us into a world that shifts in the shadows just beyond our own. This collection of short stories and flashing moments reveals an inner life that in our rush to achieve, earn, interject, assert, we pass by. Stop and listen to the scariest things, the most painful things, the most beautiful and haunting. Kristy has. She stopped and listened to hear the stories behind the noise and then gave us the gift of her own particular magic."At age fifty, after three decades of rejection, Eldon marries an onion." From "The Harvest"Allegory is a delicate thing and in Kristy's hands it becomes a web made of shimmering strands, woven with an imagination fixed on the terrible beauty of the world. These are stories of the lost and forgotten, the vulnerable and compromised. Stories of falling for the wrong person or perhaps the right one at the wrong time, of mothers who love like lionesses, of lovers who love until the sky cracks open, of the wounded who keep secrets and learn to survive."A woman was in the habit of taking on lovers and not repeating herself. At night, upon their arrival she would open the door to her home without a word, turn and walk away, letting her silky cape fall to the floor, leaving a trail for the man in the doorway. In the dark, her body was collection of moons. In the morning she would offer coffee, and leave all conversation to her paramour, while keeping herself in little books, secretly stacked inside her ribs." From "Birth"In "Coco", the novella which closes the book, a little girl with a third arm leads us into an embrace of compassion. It is a story full of love and joy, that speaks of all the ways celebrating our weirdness liberates us from the burden of self-doubt. It shows the high cost of envy and the rewards of community, the perfection of children, the grace of hope.Magical realism is storytelling's gift, for it takes us out of our present world and shows us the possibilities alive in our imaginations. It touches the most vulnerable parts, brings them to life, and allows them to dance. Kristy's gift is giving voice to the inexplicable, putting words to the things we feel but cannot account for.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Prepare yourself to fall in love By thorn Kristy Webster lets you into her heart and psyche like it's no big deal...and yet, we feel ourselves shamed that we cannot live with authenticity with which she writes with such apparent ease. Too often the stories that emanate from the disenfranchised, tortured souls are stories of victims and their survival, and we are to be stunned by their accomplishment. Kristy, however, is other worldly. She writes with such sweet simplicity, and such staggering imagery, that we are left with a vague awareness that there is so much that goes on in our own lives that we are too numb, or too blind to see. You cannot read Kristy without loving her. She is the reason that men love women: vulnerable, real, and with a spirit so deep it can never be plumbed.

Excerpt from The Painters Palette: A Theory of Tone Relations, an Instrument of ExpressionIn taking up the practice of painting, it is a question what pigments to use, how to arrange them on the palette, and then how to use the palette. Following the example of most painters, we take certain pigments; blacks, browns, reds, yellows, greens, blues, and whites; and, putting them in a row, we proceed to mix them, two or more together, quite freely, following our visual impressions or the suggestions of the imagination. In so doing we hope to produce results and effects which will be appropriate to what we have seen or to the ideas we have to express. There is no principle or law in this procedure and the effects produced depend, in every case, upon the taste and judgment of the performer; who is, necessarily, as much concerned with the problems of the palette as he is with the problem of his Motif or Subject, whether it is well chosen; of his Design, whether it is consistent; or of his Drawing, whether it is true or expressive. It is so difficult to decide what to do, in view of the great number and variety of pigments, and the infinite possibilities of mixing them together. Most painters get over the difficulty by acquiring a habit and doing the same thing repeatedly, following the precedents of their own particular practice, whatever it happens to be.Considering the Art of Music and the use of musical instruments, it seems that the musician has a great advantage over the painter in having a fixed scale of tones and definite rules for using it, - rules based on good precedents and representing the practice of recognized masters. Thinking of musical instruments and the laws of Counterpoint and of Harmony, the question comes up whether it may not be possible for the painter to convert his palette into an instrument of precision and to make the production of effects of light and color a well ordered procedure, - a procedure which everyone can understand and follow.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From the wheatfields of the Civil War to the jungles and paddies of Vietnam, the United States has led the world in adapting modern transport technology to the humanitarian goal of saving the lives of the sick and wounded. Drawing on its first experiments with helicopters in Korea, the Army in Vietnam came to rely almost entirely on the helicopter for medical evacuation. The Dust Off and Medevac helicopter ambulance unites tested and perfected for medical use the Army’s new helicopter, the UH-1, and developed several new devices, especially the hoist, that helped save thousands of American and allied lives between 1962 and 1973. The pilots of these helicopter ambulances displayed a courage and devotion to duty that earned them widespread respect from soldiers in Vietnam. This book chronicles the early problems of medical evacuation in Vietnam, recounts the valor of several of the Dust Off crews, and describes the procedures and equipment used to speed the movement of patients to in-theater Army hospitals. It also shows the effect that the helicopter had on traditional Army procedures dating back to the Civil War. The widespread use of the helicopter for medical evacuation in America since the Vietnam War testifies to the broader issues raised by this study, and of the relevance of Army history to the civilian community.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic book. Covers how Medical Evac with Helicopters began By JAMES P MULLEN Fantastic book. Covers how Medical Evac with Helicopters began. How Vietnam became the proving ground for the first set of Hueys. How the term "Dust Off" was created, and how the Dust Off crews had to literally "Learn on the Fly" to find what worked and what didn't in a jungle environment with no drawn out battle lines. Fantastic read for anyone interested in how this now vital part of any military operation grew from infancy to a well defined operation.

This feeling, however, is more the result of a disinclination to search for information on the subject than from any lack of existing sources from which to draw the knowledge required.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
