Few participants in World War I are more famous than Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron. A German known for victories in a war that his country lost, a cavalry officer made famous as mounted combat disappeared, and an aristocratic hero in a century dominated by democracy; Richthofen’s celebrity stands in stark contrast to the era. World War I brought about the emergence of full-blooded aerial combat for the first time. In fact, airplanes were so foreign to past examples of warfare that few military officers were sure of how to utilize them at the start of the war. As a result, amazing new machines capable of carrying men at great speed and height were used first for reconnaissance, and it was only later that they actually became fighter planes, with each side fighting for dominance of the air and the advantage this provided. This was the era of the dogfight, in which aerial combat was effectively invented, with engineers and pilots working quickly to adapt machines and tactics to a whole new sort of warfare. In the skies above Europe, a man could once more play the role of the lone warrior, surviving or dying by skill and the power of personality. By the time he died at the age of 25, Richthofen was a living legend, celebrated by his fellow countrymen and feared by his enemies. Ironically, he had managed to become a celebrity soldier in an era of anonymous death.

About the Author Manfred von Richthofen, popularly known as the Red Baron, was a fighter-pilot and the greatest German ace of the First World War, with eighty victories in aerial combat.

In July 1917, von Richthofen was shot down by Captain Donald Cunnell of the Royal Air Force. Although he d suffered a serious head injury, von Richthofen was able to land his plane safely. While convalescing, he wrote an autobiographical sketch, The Red Battle Flyer, at the request of the propaganda department of the German Air Force.

By the time of von Richthofen s death, after being shot down again less than a year later, he was a national hero in Germany and widely known to his country s enemies. His notoriety is attested to by the fact that his plane was quickly taken apart by souvenir hunters following the crash that took his life on April 21, 1918.

By Reader Of interest to any military aviation enthusiast, this book is a short and quick first-person account of von Richthofen's exploits in WWI. By no means is it a literary accomplishment, and the foreward, written by an Englishman, assumes that it has been heavily censored, which is a shame. A very interesting book, with the modern reader knowing Richthofen's ultimate fate is looming over the whole story. It is lacking in detail, suffers from disjointed editing/censoring, and full of ham-handed nationalistic stereotypes about the Germans, Russians, French and English. Nonetheless, reading the lexicon of the day is fascinating. Well worth the time it takes to read it (which is not much at all.)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A good read By Paul V. Erickson I liked the book. It's an interesting look at Von Richtofen. He wasn't nearly as good a writer as he was a pilot, but it gives you a look into some of things he thought were important. I would like to know how much of it was edited by German censors. In the book more is written about shooting a buffalo than about meeting the Kaiser.Another thing I found fascinating was the view of an aristocrat of things in that time period. You can tell his background was very upper class. Usually in English we only get the view from the British upper class of that time period. I enjoyed the view into the world of the more militaristic German aristocracy of the period.I only gave it three stars because while I really enjoyed the book, it's not a literary masterpiece. If you like history though and know the background of the Red Baron, it's a really good look at the man written by him. He's not at all what I thought he'd be like.

Roy Brown of the RFC reportedly brought him down, but in fact it was determined later that Australian machine gunners really brought him down firing on him as he flew at a low altitude in chasing another English pilot.He was buried by English forces with full military honors. He was interred subsequently in Germany along with his brother Lothar who was a pilot inthe same squadron commanded by Richthofen.

Grant and his book about the Civil War I continue my interest in this time in history. This book filled in many areas of this war that I wanted to know. I did not appreciate Sherman's contribution to the effort required to win until I read this book. My opinion of Sherman was positively changed by reading his Memoirs. Those that are interested in this time in our history will well appreciate this book.

There was no "glory" writing or amped up egotism in Sherman's memoir just straight facts. All of his statements on different battles line up with the actual histories of the battles. Excellent incites on Grant, Sheridan, and other Union leaders. I would recommend this volume to any civil war buff or history major.

His writing style was very educated--far above mine, and I had to look up many words he used. He impressed me with his actions and writings. Even to the end, it seems he was always in control of events. He also loved General Grant.

By jhilbe@unidial.com The contents of this book are the experiences of a Christian, for sure, whose faith in God was tried. The examples are clear, the results of real. Anyone who desires to hear from God and receive "the desires of their heart" should carefully read this book. Of all my books, this one will never be loaned out, for it has many years of practical wisdom pertaining to "touching the hem of His garment". If you need a miracle in your life; If your prayer life needs a boost; If you need to know that God hears all your prayers, and is answering them; If you're a minister; If you're wandering aimlessly through life and need direction, then READ THIS BOOK. Andrew Murray wrote it 165 years ago, but it as relevant today as it was then, for the need to learn more about prayer is a timeless desire from all ages. I have read many books on prayer from Samuel Chadwick, Leonard Ravenhill, A.W. Tozer, Charles Spurgeon, John Wesley, and many others but Andrew Murray's books remain near the top. This book should be a required reading text for every disciple of Christ.Murray's chapters are short, concise, and he fills your heart with a hunger for God's presence. While his writing style may be dated and his language archaic at times, Murray's passion for prayer shines through. He truly takes you to the school of prayer and leads you before the throne of Almight God.If you love to pray, struggle with prayer, or want to learn the secrets of the saints of old who spread God's truth without technology but their voices and their Bibles then read Andrew Murray's classic works on prayer.

It turned praryer time into a tender and powerful time. I do not think that this book will have the same impact on everyone, but if you like old authors like I do then please read this book. It is written by a man that spent much time in the closet and out of the closet with the Lord.

Vivid, revelatory By Amazon Customer Here is Mendelossohn, the musical prodigy, at 20 writing vivid letters to his father and sister amounting to a journal of his visit to Goethe in Weimar, Florence, Rome, Naples, and a walk across Switzerland dealing with early summer floods. The young man writes beautifully, evokes place, the people he meets, and shares his infectious enthisuasm and love of life and music. Separately online you can see the skilled sketches he made of these places.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Informative Read with Insight into the Art Industry By Belle I would classify myself as an amatuer artist (according to the defintion in this book). I have some talent. While this book does a good job of making me consider selling my art, I do not think that I have the dedication it takes to be a professional. This book truly is the textbook for the art business. I would have rated this 5 stars if I felt that it was more applicable to my experience. I suppose that it is not what I expected. I would highly recommend this (and have recommended this book) to my friends that are artists. It was an informative read with plenty of insight into the art industry. The author is obviously very knowledgeable and does make the information accessible to all.I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

I couldn't imagine making it my full time, real job, until after reading this book. Using the good information in this book, it can be done. I like the phrase that art is purchased, not sold. How true that is. We buy a painting or another work of art because we like it, not because someone is trying to sell it to us. I don't know that anyone could sell me a work of art if I didn't really want it. Most art doesn't appeal to everyone, but properly displayed and marketed, most anyone with artistic talent can make it their life's work.The information in Ms. de Wal's book is enough to give confidence to an artist to try selling their work. Shows and galleries are explained and the ins and outs of shows and pricing are shared. Juried shows, art advisors, gallery dealers and more are detailed to "get your foot in the door" to selling work. Inventory, tax information, licensing, etc. are so well spelled out that this is invaluable to any artist in any medium.This is like an encyclopedia of making art a career and not a book to be read lightly, but read and reread as goals change. As a reference book to be used by a beginning artist or a required text for classes both professional and casual painting classes, I certainly would recommend this.I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review

It goes into every detail and then some. How to make a career and sell your art work. I found this book to be very detailed oriented . For someone who does not delve into Art it was a bit overwhelming and yet, it kept my interest. Details were laid out with an easy to follow instructions and it made it seem as if the Author truly cared about this subject matter, Explaining this in as much detail as possible on how to succeed in the business of Art. Suzy is Helly's best friend and she is plotting a more some with Helly's brothers. However her plans are destroyed when her home is severely damaged by the brothers. Here enters Ed. Sweet quiet soulful Ed. Or is he? Ed has a huge secret that Suzy finds out by using all her feminine wiles. To find out you have got to read this hot spicy book. These two heat up Alaska something fierce. Plus we get to visit with Gary and Helly which I dearly loved! Just wait til you read how hot that chair gets! 5++

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A nice guy with a SECRET! By Voracious Reader I received a free copy for an honest review.I read Two Cabins and One Lake and thoroughly enjoyed it. I then went and read everything I could by Shaye Marlow. I even sought her out on Facebook (can we obsessed! - LOL). When she asked for beta-readers for Two Captains One Chair, I said, "Sign me up!" I've now read it twice. Once prior to publication and then the final version that was published. I enjoyed Suzy's story. I really liked Ed. Nice guys are missing from modern romances. There are too many angsty-difficult-alpha-male love interests, but Ed was the complete opposite. Shaye did a great job of making him nice but with a SECRET; a really, really delicious secret that Suzy wanted to find out. This gave Ed depth that would have been missing if he'd just been NICE. I also liked Suzy, but Ed was definitely my favorite of the two.My only complaint was the build up between Suzy and Ed. It took them a while to do the deed, as it were, but it was nice to catch up with the characters I loved from Two Cabins One Lake. I laughed out loud on more than one occasion. It was a very enjoyable read, and I didn't at all mind reading it twice.

Fun and Steamy By Kindle Customer I've just had a couple of absolutely entertaining hours with a wonderful excursion through an Alaskan river adventure. There are feisty, beautiful women and hunks of hot men . The characters are so wonderful I want to hang out with them a whole lot more. Men in flannel, who can fix anything make me melt. I strongly recommend both books. Read and enjoy. I did
