A beautifully illustrated version of the classic and humorous song, “Jennie Jenkins”   A beautiful take on a timeless story, this picture book will become a favorite of today’s children, another wonderful chapter in the continuing legacy of a delightful, classic songtale. In the United States, “Jennie Jenkins” was sung as a way for a boy to ask a girl to dance. The boy would sing the first part and pick a color and the girl would have to make up an answer that rhymed. If the girl failed to quickly respond with an appropriate answer, she would be required to dance with the boy. The fully notated version of this song with all the words is included at the end of the book, along with a detailed history of the song. An MP3 of the song is also available for free download.

This book is a reflection on the subjects and places that made the deepest impression on the author during his years spent in Eastern Africa. His interest and skill in capturing the emotions of wild animals, their resilience and beauty make it unique. The author has sought out the most dramatic weather conditions for his photographs—morning mists, dust storms and heavy rains, or rays of light shining through the clouds—and followed the animals on endless journeys along ancient trails, accross dry lakes or raging rivers, documenting their never-ending fight for survival. He had his camera with him all the time, always hoping for the perfect blend of elements to come together in one image.

Even when I wanted to know what was going on with the animals in the images, I couldn't bear to read the accompanying stories, which are in odd tenses, usually present or present progressive tense (e.g., "I am sitting in the back of my car...) or mixing tenses in a single passage. My copy had a flawed print with color streaking across an image.

A Book for Aspiring Wildlife Photographers By Mythmaker It took me quite some time to decide whether to purchase this book, because there is absolutely no page preview anywhere either online or in physical bookstores. Personally, I dislike photography books which are full of words and lacking of quality images. But this book strikes a nice balance of both.If you are looking for an encyclopaedia of animals in Africa, this is not the book you are looking for. This is a book for photographers, shot in beautiful light and composition with a great mix of close-ups and natural habitat. Federico Veronesi is more of a fine art wildlife photographer rather than a documentary photographer, so silhouette is a common theme in a number of his shots. There is also a 1 page long write-up of behind-the-scene story beside many of his images. Hopefully all these information will give you an idea of what to expect in the book.So if you are sick and tired of shooting the same stuff in your local zoo over and over again, hopefully this book will inspire you to get out of the house and bring your wildlife photography skills to the next level.

Stunning book, must-have for wildlife fans By Margot Raggett Having seen Federico out and about in the Maasai Mara for a number of years I was interested to finally get my hands on his book when it came out and I wasn't disappointed. Too many wildlife books are filled with images but no context to when they were taken but this book addresses that. The stories that accompany the images bring them to life for me but if like some I know, you just want to look at the pictures, you won't be disappointed with that either. The images are beautiful and also very inspiring for other aspiring wildlife photographers. Must buy.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ethical Lectures By Jay Young Felix Adler is an unjustly neglected figure of American religious history. Unless you are familiar with the current American Humanist community, you probably haven't heard of him. Adler lived from 1851-1933 in New York. The son of a Reform Rabbi, Adler abandoned the faith of his childhood, but didn't want to give up on religion entirely. What he did was found the Society for Ethical Culture, which survives to this day. Adler was active in fighting against child labor at the turn of the 19th century, promoted tenement house reform, and strongly opposed the imperialist adventures of Teddy Roosevelt."Life and Destiny" is a collection of some of his notes from lectures that he delivered at the Ethical Culture gatherings; this is a good place to start for someone who is interested in his teachings. The two philosophers who affected Adler the most were Immanuel Kant and Ralph Waldo Emerson, and their influence is clear in these lectures. Basically, Adler believed that salvation was in action in this world, and that activity was to replace prayer. He thought that religions were ethical only insofar as they foster moral development, and that supernatural revelation was unnecessary thereto. This is an interesting book for anyone to read from a profound thinker.

PDF Ebook Into Woods, by Bill Roorbach

Into Woods is an exuberant, profound, and often wonderfully funny account of ten years in the life of author Bill Roorbach. A paean to nature, love, family, and place, it begins with his honeymoon on a wine farm in France's Loire Valley and closes with the birth of his daughter and he and his wife's return to their beloved Maine. These essays blend journalism, memoir, personal narrative, nature writing, cultural criticism, and insight into a flowing narrative of place, a meditation on being and belonging, love and death, wonder and foreboding.

Into Woods, by Bill Roorbach

From Library Journal Fiction writer Roorbach's first collection of personal essays, Summers with Juliet, traced his courtship of his wife and ended with their wedding. Into Woods continues their story, moving from the honeymoon to university teaching to settling in Maine. Roorbach's writing continues to be that freewheeling mixture of nature writing, personal detail, humor, philosophy, and social commentary that makes his personal essays unique. His self-deprecating humor is especially evident in "Honeymoon," an essay describing the couple's time in France, where his landlords, a farm family, love Juliet but snub her idle writer husband. The strain on the family caused by moving for jobs is a theme of the final essay, "My Life as a Move," in which the author describes giving up "probably the best creative writing job in America" to pursue a dream, find a home, and raise the couple's child. Roorbach won the 2001 Flannery O'Connor Award in short fiction for Big Bend: Stories. Recommended for both public and academic libraries. Nancy P. Shires, East Carolina Univ., Greenville, NC Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

Review "In these vigorous, boisterous, and earthy essays, Bill Roorbach gives us a shrewdly candid self-portrait, while telling us reams about what it means to be a man. He writes confidently and confidingly, elegantly, and articulately."-- Phillip Lopate"Here is a narrator who makes you glad to be alive, giddy to be in his presence, grateful to love friends and family and dogs with generosity and abandon, to show tenderness and thus be saved by strangers."-- Melanie Rae Thon

About the Author Bill Roorbach is the author of the O’Henry Award-winning story collection Big Bend, as well of the novels The Smallest Color, Life among Giants, and The Remedy for Love. He also wrote the memoir, Summerswith Juliet and the essay collection Into Woods. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including TheAtlantic, Harper’s Monthly, Granta, and the NewYork Times magazine. He lives with his family in Farmington, Maine.

I have loved reading his work in various journals and magazines; reading them again here, along with essays I'd never read, is such a satisfying experience.I found myself laughing out loud on the subway reading the first essay, "Honeymoon," as Roorbach described some of the challenges of comunicating in France. "Into Woods," the title essay, is one of my favorites. It was an essay I made my whole family read. What I admire most about Roorbach's work is how much he can cover in an essay. He will start out in one place and then end up somewhere completely unexpected. His is such an amiable presence... so funny, so smart. Hey, he had me reading about fishing and liking it :)I look forward to any journey he takes us on.

The history of the 'barbarian' peoples of Europe is filled with dramatic wars and migrations along with charismatic and often farsighted leaders. Inevitably, their greatest challenge was their struggle with the renowned military might of Rome. Even when outnumbered and faced by better equipped and trained Roman legions, the barbarians could inflict devastating defeats upon Rome. Though sometimes fickle in battle, the barbarian warrior was capable of reckless bravery. The Romans themselves admired the size and strength of the barbarians, which, combined with a life of hardship and intertribal warfare, made them dangerous opponentsThis book, however, is as much about Rome as it is about its tribal foes. Ludwig Dyck begins with the foundation of the city of Rome and follows her growth into a martial empire, complete with its pageantry and glory, its genius, its brutality and its arrogance. All this is told in a fast-paced, accessible narrative style.

The Roman Barbarian Wars: The Era of Roman Conquest, by Ludwig Heinrich Dyck

Review "Dyck has produced an engaging, well-written book that not only discusses the campaigns and leaders of the period, but also gives a detailed look at tactics, clothing and weapons as well. It is popular history at its best." - Military Heritage Magazine"Dyck's details of ancient battles and the people involved provide as much sword-slashing excitement as any fictional account." - Kirkus Reviews"Dyck has provided us with one of the few accounts of this period available to the general reader...the book is well written, researched and organized, and, above all, highly informative."-Military History Magazine  "...the writing is colorful and the focus is on a brisk narrative of the various campaigns."- Ancient Warfare Magazine"Getting the feeling of being transported to another time is usually the realm of historical fiction, but Dyck does such a great job of presenting the story that he can allow the reader to really see the events."- William McLaughlin, War History Online

From the Author Although I have enjoyed writing magazine articles on a broad range of historical subjects, ranging from Brian Boru the Irish warrior king, to Shih Huang Ti the first Chinese Emperor, the majority of my writing has focused on the Second World War, the Habsburg-Ottoman wars and the Roman barbarian wars. The latter became the subject of my book, "The Roman Barbarian Wars, the Era of Roman Conquest." Rome's wars with tribes of Europe ultimately presented her greatest challenges yet traditionally received less exposure than her conflicts with Mediterranean civilizations. The barbarian wars were about the encroachment of civilization on cultures still closer aligned to the natural world. It is a conflict replayed throughout history and sadly still relevant today.

About the Author Ludwig Heinrich Dyck was born on Nov. 19, 1965 in Wesel, of what was then West Germany. A Canadian citizen through his father's citizenship, Dyck spent his early childhood amidst the countryside of rural North Rhine-Westphalia. It was not until his preteen years that he permanently moved to the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada, where Dyck still resides. An artist, naturalist and traveler, and above all a history buff, Dyck writes from a well-rounded perspective. Since his first publication in 1998, Dyck has written for numerous popular US history magazines. His first book is the well received "The Roman Barbarian Wars, the Era of Roman Conquest."

A WONDERFUL ACCOUNT OF ROMAN CONQUEST AND RESISTANCE By Eric Niderost Gaius Julius Caesar was a man of many talents, not only a superb general but one of the greatest statesmen that Rome ever produced. Caesar and others helped create the Roman Empire, an empire that helped forge Western civilization. But the creation of this empire involved conquest, conquest that was often brutal and bloody in the extreme. Ludwig Heinrich Dyck's "The Roman Barbarian Wars" is an impressive account of these campaigns, done up in a very readable, enjoyable style. In spite of the book title, Dyck puts a human face on Rome's "barbarian" enemies, people who lacked the sophistication of the Greco-Roman world, but more than made up for it with their love of freedom and boundless courage. The portions that describe the battles are particularly compelling and well written. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in this period.

44 of 51 people found the following review helpful. A really different, and unique read. By Sabrina What I can say is that Cruel and Beautiful is a tale about more than falling in love. It's about what happens after you fall in love, the ups and downs, the painful memories and the good, and the love for a person that makes everything else disappear.I got this ARC awhile ago but I was being a big baby after reading the emotional prologue so I wasn't ready to start it. But I put on my big girl panties and dove in...and then face planted. What I was thinking would be an emotional rollercoaster ended up being a little boring. I found myself getting easily distracted with this one and even though I started it on my lazy day I still didn't finish until the next day. That's a big thing for me, I'm a one book a day type of person! The overall story was good and interesting and I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out what the hell was going on. But that became the problem...I couldn't figure out what was going on! Every chapter went back and forth from the past and the present and it honestly got a little confusing. Also a little frustrating because it almost seemed like I was reading two different books.Cate was also a little hard to handle and she seemed really immature, especially in the chapters that were in the past. When she first met Drew and their relationship started it wasn't easy for me to get past her attitude that seemed a little childish at times. At first her character was a little funny but it soon became really annoying. And I really really couldn't get over the fact that she names her va jay jay Louise. Just no, okay. No.The book sort of came together at the end when the past and the present finally came together but even after that I still can't really say how I feel about this story. Once I figured out what the hell was going on and it all made more sense I finally understood the pieces that I was missing but by that point I had just spent the whole book being confused and a little annoyed. So really by that point I'm not sure if finally finding out was worth it or not.Overall, the story was really different, and unique, and it made the book a really interesting one. I couldn't fully get into it because of the back and forth from past to present but now that I've finished the whole book I can appreciate all the confusion I had to go through to get to the end.ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

I am still trying to figure out what the big hook is all about. I like a lot of other readers was very confused with all the jumping around from past to present, both with the same name from the same city. I have to be missing something, I definitely don't get it and it did not work for me. I am really surprised by all the raving reviews. I purchased last night and I found things boring and thought a lot of the things that I think were supposed to be funny really over the top dumb and really immature. I skimmed through trying to make sense of two different stories written by two different authors. There were some things in the plot I have read before in other books that is why I really don't get the big hook? The title of the book was pulled into the epilogue of the story and really does not match the cover. I think readers should understand before reading this book the story is about cancer. Like other cancer stories this one moves on so I am not sure what makes it so special I thought it was a confusing mess.

Maybe writing this will give me closure. No details will be in my review, so read away. I loved and hated this book at the same time. In the end love one out. My heart literally broke. I have been crying ugly tears since last night. I'm having a hard to getting through my day with out wanting to bawl!! There is so much love it was almost too much for me. I'm more of a fan of alpha male leads. And he wasn't really. He was more I love you and I'll lay down my life for you. But I still feel hopeless in love. The only thing I didn't like about the book is there was a lot of talking. I can't really explain it but I would think ok, move on what happenes next. The book goes back and forth between past and present. Wasn't to hard to follow. But could be slightly confusing at times. (Note to author: chapter 27 says past but it's the present. Think that's the only one.) in the end I felt so torn about the hero but the epilogue made me see Cate is ok and love is there. That will make more sense once you read this amazing work of art. Also the book is in Cate's POV. That changes in the epilogue. I like duel POV better but totally understand why for this book. It would have been way to much and no doubt would have made the book confusing and unreadable. When I read the "a final word" part I almost couldn't breath. This book meant so much more then just telling a story. It was beautiful and soul changing. thank you to the authors for taking the time to write Cate's story. It will be a book I remember for years to come. May favorite quote from the book:"Even if we did have to fight to overcome the cruel, we hung on to the beautiful and it was damn worth it. "This book is worth the price and the time. Just make sure you have plenty tissue handy:) happy reading!

A look up at the night sky reveals a treasury of wonders. Even to the naked eye, the Moon, stars, planets, the Milky Way and even a few star clusters and nebulae illuminate the heavens. For millennia, humans struggled to make sense of what's out there in the Universe, from all we can see to that which lies beyond the limits of even our most powerful telescopes. Beyond the Galaxy traces our journey from an ancient, Earth-centered Universe all the way to our modern, 21st century understanding of the cosmos. Touching on not only what we know but also how we know it, Ethan Siegel takes us to the very frontiers of modern astrophysics and cosmology, from the birth of our Universe to its ultimate fate, and everything in between.

Beyond the Galaxy:How Humanity Looked Beyond Our Milky Way and Discovered the Entire Universe, by Ethan Siegel

Review "Beyond the Galaxy offers a fun, informative excursion through the universe and the complex history of our attempts to grapple with its size, age and content. Ethan Siegel writes clearly and confidently, drawing upon wonderful analogies and fascinating tidbits of astronomical history, including outstanding accounts of the heated debates of the past about the nature of the cosmos. The book is richly illustrated, nicely supplementing Siegel's lucid prose. A must read for anyone curious about the development of cosmology and where it stands today!" -- Paul Halpern, Author of Einstein's Dice and Schrödinger's Cat

"Ethan Siegel takes us on an engaging journey from the smallest to the largest scales of space and time. He illuminates the path with abundant useful figures, and clearly explains the varied topics he tackles. His descriptions for how the Universe expands, depending upon what it is made of, are particularly nice. His prose exudes enthusiasm and passion — not just for the things we have learned, but for the scientific process. A great read for the science enthusiast." -- Robert Garisto, Editor, Physical Review Letters

"Ethan Siegel has achieved the rare feat of writing a textbook that reads like an engrossing page-turner. This is a book that belongs on the reading list of every undergraduate introduction to astrophysics and cosmology." -- Dr Roberto Trotta, Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics at Imperial College London, and author of 'The Edge of the Sky: All you need to know about the All-There-Is'

By Yurlungur The history of science is filled with ideas that were once compelling, but have since been ruled out by empirical evidence. Ethan Siegel's Beyond the Galaxy understands this fundamental truth of science. With eloquence and clarity, Siegel tells us the story of the universe, from the (inferred) cosmic inflation and the Big Bang at the very beginning to the (predicted) Big Freeze at the very end. In the process, Siegel also tells us the story of the sciences that study the universe. Many authors describe how we learned that obselete ideas like geocentrism and tired light are wrong. However, Siegel also illustrates why these ideas were widely accepted in the first place: They explained the world well. Given the limited knowledge of their time, they were good ideas. And modern science is just as susceptable to revision. Siegel speculates about how our current best ideas may be wrong and enthusiastically describes the mysteries that plague us. In doing so, Siegel teaches readers about both the study of cosmology and the nature of scientific inquiry. Beyond the Galaxy is one of those rare books that not only communicates scientific ideas, but communicates what science itself is all about.

By mousegle "This is not just the story of the Universe as we presently understand it, but also the story of how the scientific process works in general."That's why it must be the first page turner to contain meson diagrams. An excellent primer for beginning space nerds and wannabe astrophysicists of all professions, and a neat reference for the more advanced ones. The best part is that it shows the history and process of how science is made, including wrong assumptions and colorful personalities and simple rules to separate workable from useless theories. ("Can it make novel predictions that would be supported by experiments?") It emphasizes scientific understanding as an evolving process instead of a holy writ - something I happen to find particularly appealing both about this book and about science as my own profession. In addition, the author succeeds in addressing lay audience in a colloquial style that still never doubts the intelligence or logic of the reader. Combine that with the sense of humor and the fact that every time I started thinking "this is confusing, let me draw it out" there was a neat diagram on the very next page... I want a sequel, thank you.

Beautiful and well-executed book about the science's current knowledge of the Universe By ein kunde Ethan Siegel's books features, in my opinion, exactly the "right" level of presentation for those who want to learn about the current (2015) state of the art of science's understanding of the Universe without actually going through all the relevant formulae. There's the history of the discoveries and there are enough of precise illustrations to help the reader understand the nuances of these discoveries. Just an example: while reading about the Hubble's measurement of different speeds of galaxies, we see an image directly from Hubble's 1936 book with the example of the black and white photographs of the spectra he had made with the markings of the recognized position of the K H Fraunhofer lines (and the different shifts of them). Seeing original material deepens my understanding of the process, as well as demonstrates better the exact context and the details which were important exactly at the time the discoveries were made.I'm not aware of any other book that has this level of the up-to-date information on the knowledge of Universe with a good balance of being scientific and precise enough while remaining still easy to read (by preferring to show the detailed pictures instead of formulae or just long text-only descriptions).Even if in the current description on Amazon it's not clear, in the "paperback" edition (at least, 978-9814667166 that I have) the whole book is printed in high resolution, full-color on the glossy acid-free paper, so it's much higher quality than the typical plain paperback book. The font size allows easy reading.Ethan Siegel, the author, also actively writes the articles about the Universe on the internet: Forbes, Medium and his own "Starts With A Bang" blog, so the potential readers can easily sample his approach even if there's no "Look Inside" the book at the moment.
