Early Modern Lessons In Power By Bruce Harpham In "Queenship and Revolution in Early Modern Europe", the reader will learn a fresh perspective on power, monarchy and revolutionary movements of the early modern period. As a historian, Dr Harris brings a depth of knowledge and research to her work. While some may guess what Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-1669) - wife of King Charles I - and Queen Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) - wife of King Louis XVI of France - thought and felt, this book introduces you to the details. For example, Dr Harris cites household accounts and letters to show how the queens expressed their parenting philosophy. Then as now, decisions on how to spend money show what a person values. Drawing on financial records, letters from ambassadors, journals and other primary sources bring the book to life with vivid detail. The reader gets a robust sense of the fact that Henrietta Maria and Marie Antoinette were real historical people who faced challenges in their marriages, with their children and friends and foes at court.The changing and contested nature of queenship and royal authority is another insight from this book. Many of us assume that European monarchs of this era had unlimited authority and power - similar to the 20th century's dictators. However, kings and queens in the early modern era had to campaign for support much like today's elected officials and they faced problems. For example, Charles I issued a proclamation pardoning criminals yet the evidence shows that this decree was often ignored. In other cases, royal decisions were fully implemented. Absolute power may have been a dream for some in the early modern period but it was rarely achieved in practice.While the book is firmly grounded in early modern Europe and robust scholarship, there are timeless themes and struggles explored that make for engaging reading. For example, controversies and criticism over royal parenting decisions and child-rearing philosophy continue to resonate to the modern day. In addition, Dr Harris demonstrates that many courtiers and noble families were motivated to act by the drive for patronage appointments (e.g. seeking employment in the queen's household or as a royal governess). There was still fierce competition for high prestige roles and places at court despite the fact that many nobles had considerable resources and land.

Great Hough Genealogy Book By Billy Huff A story of a journey to discover ancestral roots of her known Carolina ancestors aided by recent DNA testing that defined two separate Hough branches. Very detailed information on the descendants of John and Hannah Hough of Cheshire, England and Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Includes many maps, photos and family history. A must have book for everyone interested in Hough (also spelled Huff) family genealogy.

Example in this ebook JOHN GOTTLIEB ERNESTUS HECKEWELDER, the author of “An Account of the History, Manners, and Customs of the Indian Nations who once inhabited Pennsylvania and the neighboring States,” was born March 12th, 1743, at Bedford, England. His father, who was a native of Moravia, a few years after his arrival at Herrnhut, Saxony, was summoned to England to assist in the religious movement which his church had inaugurated in that country in 1734. In his eleventh year, the subject of this sketch accompanied his parents to the New World, and became a resident of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Here he was placed at school, and next apprenticed to a cedar-cooper. While thus employed, he was permitted to gratify a desire he had frequently expressed of becoming an evangelist to the Indians, when in the spring of 1762 he was called to accompany the well-known Christian Frederic Post, who had planned a mission among the tribes of the then far west, to the Tuscarawas branch of the Muskingum. Here Post, in the summer of 1761, had built himself a cabin (it stood near the site of the present town of Bolivar), and here on the 11th day of April, 1762, the intrepid missionary and his youthful assistant began their labors in the Gospel. But the times were unpropitious, and the hostile attitude of the Indians indicating a speedy resumption of hostilities with the whites, the adventurous enterprise was abandoned before the expiration of the year. Young Heckewelder returned to Bethlehem, and the war of Pontiac’s conspiracy opened in the spring of 1763. In the interval between 1765 and 1771, Mr. Heckewelder was, on several occasions, summoned from his cooper’s shop to do service for the mission. Thus, in the summer of the first mentioned year, he spent several months at Friedenshütten, on the Susquehanna (Wyalusing, Bradford county, Pennsylvania), where the Moravian Indians had been recently settled in a body, after a series of most trying experiences, to which their residence on the frontiers and in the settlements of the Province subjected them, at a time when the inroads of the savages embittered the public mind indiscriminately against the entire race. This post he visited subsequently on several occasions, and also the town of Schechschiquanink (Sheshequin), some thirty miles north of Wyalusing, the seat of a second mission on the Susquehanna. Machu Picchu - One of the New Seven Wonders of the World is an unbelievable place - a place you almost have to see for yourself to truly believe. I still remember the first time seeing a photo of the 15th century Inca site located high up in the mountain ridge not being able to believe such a place existed in this world. For 8 years my wife and I kept on doing research in wanting to go but and kept on postponing the trip since it seemed quite difficult to get there and the altitude sickness seemed to be common with travelers not being able to enjoy the trip. In spring of 2015, we finally made it out there guided by our good friend and travel expert helping us safely get there and not get sick! All I could say is that the trip was just amazing. Our initial expectations were high to begin with but it even exceeded those high expectations. This 74 page book captures the exact route we took, what transportation methods we used, what hotels we stayed in, what altitudes were in each location and how we avoided getting altitude sickness. All this information along with all the on-location sketches I did (along with some photos) are bundled into this one book. I truly hope there is something fun or informational in this book for everyone!

By Charles Johnson This charming travelogue is filled with all of the interesting things one sees when they're travelling. But, instead of just photographs, Mike shares Peru by showing the brightly-colored sketches he drew on location. We get to see everything, just the way he experienced it, from a simple cup of tea, to one of the Seven Wonders of the New World.This is a great example of what CreateSpace was made for.

This book is encouraging me to sketch my next travel adventure. Mike is a very talented Urban Sketcher who really has a passion for drawing his travels. I would highly recommend this book. I love his other books as well.

The main characters Lynn and Tom have certain charisma, there is a lot to learn from them, even the story is in the realm of fantasy , but due to the good writing you perceive it as real. I’ve got so many quotes, which are so expressive, they just trigger in my mind, love to remember them and connect with my existence….
