From the Inside Flap The dedication of the Gettysburg Soldier's Cemetery on November 19, 1863, was more than a way to honor fallen heroes at the most famous battle of the war. It was the administration's most important political event since Lincoln's election three years earlier. The three major addresses at Gettysburg were not a random collection of individual orations. They were a carefully planned and constructed ensemble designed to accomplish different yet complimentary purposes. Each speaker intended to eulogize to some degree. Edward Everett's style was deliberate. He sought to educate his audience. Lincoln was inspirational. He intended to elevate the war to a higher moral plane. Anderson was provocative. His address was designed to motivate, even agitate the crowd to support a vigorous prosecution of the war. By Larry Dickinson This is a detailed biography of a great American patriot that I did not know before picking up this book. A must read for the CIvil War and American history enthusiast, it is by no means a stuffy history text. Mr. Dixon brings history to life in this narrative. Although filled with facts and a thorough index, it is an enjoyable read for a non-historian like me. The author does an excellent job of placing us in the middle of this, our country's most challenging tim; the fulminant debates, the bloody battles and the broken lives. There are interesting parallels to be drawn to issues our nation is facing today. Filled with great life lessons, I am a better person as well as a more educated citizen having read this book.

By Amazon Customer Meet Charles Anderson, an amazing patriot who lived through a tumultuous period when the written principles upon which this country was founded were finally forged into iron. Time and again Anderson found himself at the center of powerful confluences of events that tore this country apart, and then joined it again into a more perfect union. He was the son of a famous Revolutionary War hero, and like his father, he would be ready to sacrifice all he owned including his life for this country, but he would never compromise those ideals for which it stood. As the Civil War clouds gathered Anderson used his political skills, his silver tongue, and his strong personality in the struggle to hold the country together while the abolitionists and the slave holders were ripping it apart. When the war started he was trapped in Texas with his family and they were held prisoners of the Confederates. Their daring escape into Mexico was an exciting journey involving spies, compatriots, rebel soldiers and the hot dry desert. When he finally returned to Ohio he was appointed a Colonel in the Union Army where he served with distinction until he was wounded. Later as a political leader his support for the Union was tested against the forces pushing to end the war and settle for peace with the country remaining split in two. Anderson would not stand for this and at every opportunity he spoke eloquently, and with spirit, in opposition to the idea. The Governor of Ohio selected him to “prepare suitable remarks” for the dedication of the new cemetery at Gettysburg. In his address he encouraged all citizens to continue the unfinished business for which the fallen had given their lives. His words were enthusiastically received by the overflowing crowd, which included President Lincoln and some of his cabinet. It was the third speech given at Gettysburg that day, and then it was lost without a trace.The author, David Dixon, by an extraordinary stroke of luck, came across the original hand written speech. This inspired him to follow through with intense research and he accumulated an abundance of facts and details from which he was able to resurrect this marvelous story of the life of Charles Anderson. The prose of this work is sprinkled with minutiae in such a way as to portray the characters as complete individuals, personalities and all.David Dixon has skillfully combined rich history and high drama to produce a very good read.Lawrence Ward, Scituate, MA, January 26, 2016.

By Rob Tolley A full Charles Anderson biography was something I dreamed of when I stumbled upon boxes of his personal papers in Pinedale, Wyoming. The collection included the complete draft of Charles Anderson’s Gettysburg Address. The collection was donated of these papers and documents in historical societies and libraries around the country.David Dixon is the first author to make full use of this discovery. He has created the biography that Charles Anderson’s life is worthy of. And he presents the full text of Charles Anderson’s Gettysburg address to readers for the first time. So it’s here, and historian or not, you’re in for a treat.If you’re just a casual history reader, it’s a true story well told. The story line has themes present in romance novels. If there were lurid details (generally not available to researchers….) the book could have a very dramatic looking cover. Don’t be put off if you’re not a Civil war buff….there’s plenty of human drama here!If you’re well versed in Civil War scholarship, you’re also in for a treat. Every other paragraph connects Charles Anderson’s life to other military and political history luminaries. Charles Anderson attended Jefferson Davis’s wedding? Anderson’s daughter Kitty was a regular dance partner of Robert E. Lee at social gatherings in San Antonio? Are you kidding? New details on speeches at Gettysburg? Who knew? You will, when you close the last page.This biography is extensively and comprehensively researched. .If a resource on Anderson existed, David Dixon sought it out. This effort created what I would refer to as Dixon’s Dilemma. How to include all the fascinating details of Anderson’s life without generating a 1500 page, 3 volume set? One full volume could be written on Anderson’s Gettysburg Address alone.Dixon manages his Dilemma well, giving us the rich fabric of a complete and notable life. But there is more! This book should be a trigger point for further in-depth scholarship. Academic readers be on the alert….your next Civil War paper or conference presentation may be inspired by this book. Read it, and soldier on! The book’s reference notes are your roadmap!So David Dixon gives us the first complete vision of Charles Anderson. It is a fascinating story, well told.
