In this concluding story of the Trails series, young George Northwood (formerly known as Georgy), all grown up, travels back East from Oregon and lands in the middle of the American Civil War. Unwilling to take sides, having loyalties in both the North and the South, he chooses to use his medical abilities in treating the wounded—on both sides. Along the way he teams up with a young nurse from Montana, and rescues a little orphan boy. Donning the uniforms of both sides, George finds himself in the ticklish situation of having to prove his loyalty to the North as well as to the South. His refusal to lie makes this all the harder to do. But through it all, God’s hand shelters him and molds him into the man He created him to be, accomplishing His purpose in George’s life.

War trails By Boannah A good story line as with all her previous books in the series, but was disappointed in the ending which got so bogged down the I didn't even finish it. It would have been just fine without the two epilogues. Each book was detailed and followed almost daily events, and I was looking forward to George returning home reuniting with his family. But the time line jumped forward fifty years completely bypassing all events and landed with the author's viewpoint of how a family reunion will be in heaven corralling all the characters for one big curtain call at the end. She used over an hour of reading time having dead family members being reintroduced along with those that had only been fleetingly mentioned before. This ending also became a summary of the entire series, which is ok, but it flipped from being Patrick's ministry to George's; only the last book was about George, so it should have been Patrick's reunion and meeting with Jesus in the end.

A vivid reminder of the cost we paid for the Civil War By Mary Jane Kail Like many of the other readers, this was my favorite of the four book series. But, like a few of the others I was totally disappointed with the ending. Epilogue 1: Medical Degree Earned - And Then What! would have been a good ending. STOP THERE!!!!! But, Epilogue 2: Trails End - And Then What, totally messed up what was a very good book until then. I read the whole thing & even though some questions were answered in that part of the book I felt like there were many other ways that information could have been brought about. In fact, I almost took off one star because of the ending but decided I didn't want to ruin my memory of a good book so I choose to ignore the second Epilogue.I haven't yet read the companion books to this series but I'm going to not let the ending of the fourth book discourage me from reading the last two. I do recommend this series highly but just don't be too turned off by the end of this one.

I loved this series and I cried like a baby at the end when everyone is in Heaven. It made me more appreciative those in my family who have gone on before me and how important it is to share the word so I can see more people I love. George was a great example of a true believer and it was one of the best books I've ever read on the Civil War. Thank you Sally Hull for this series

‘In his khaki shirt and shorts and with his curly blonde hair, he looked so much like a little boy. One leg was blown off at the knee leaving a ragged brown stump. He was lying on his stomach, his head resting in his arms and it was just as if in his agony and his loneliness he had just turned over and died.’ Excerpt ... El Alamein, 26 October, 1942.George Hopper, ex-bank clerk and now Rifleman with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, begins his superbly illustrated diary in May 1940 by telling of the early frustrations of military life. Eventually deployed to Egypt, George vividly recounts the horrendous conditions in the troopships and of Montgomery’s epic 8th Army battle with Rommel at El Alamein. As a stretcher bearer in the midst of the most violent warfare, his terrible and gruesome experiences resulted in the nightmares that were to stay with him for the remainder of his life. After journeying though Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel the regiment finally departed from Alexandria in Egypt to take part in the invasion of Italy. Here he recounts the bitter fighting that took place in the cold and mountainous areas around the infamous Monastery at Cassino, as the Nazis with backs against the wall made their last stand. Victory finally came, but at an appalling cost in Allied lives.Ultimately deployed to the Military Mission to Greece, George experienced and wrote of the intense and treacherous civil warfare that took place after the Nazis departed as the Communists tried to take over Greece from the British supported Nationalists. This was the beginning of the lengthy and disastrous Greek Civil War and led to what eventually became known as the ‘Cold War’ with Russia.Masterfully written and illustrated, this is an epic story of one man thrown into the battlefields of Egypt, Italy and Greece. From the Battle of Britain to El Alamein, to the invasion of Italy and the Greek Civil War, this is a historic account, both gripping and compassionate, of a world at war.REVIEWS ‘Superb story-telling with often a touch of humour but mostly depicting the terrible events of an ordinary life.’Books Monthly UK

What if this were your life.I like the fact that the book has drama, comedy, and a plot you can follow. It makes you hope that get their HEA, but fear they won't. I like that it has a believable story line and that the main female character has gumption. She is not a weak individual. Chase's character is more of the self centered type and makes you hope he grows up.It is a quick read with a little drama.

I love them. The secondary characters are just okay, Spike and Sophie so far I don't get their purpose but am patiently hoping for some insight in the next books. I love what I've read on Chase and Meghan up to this point. I will be reading book 2 out of curiosity and I'm really hoping for a HEA. Hoping for good and more sex scenes too and that Mia gets hers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. quick, romantic, and humorous read By Book Bangs Meghan and Chase are a fun couple and the secondary characters Spike and Sophie just as likable. This is a quick, romantic, and humorous read all around. What I really liked about this book is the characters are not perfect. The heroine is strong but with just enough weaknesses to make her believable. Chase was a little dark and pessimistic at times, but by the end, the feelings he and Meghan shared had brought him around.

I love the details about their day by day struggles. Untwisted history. My great grand parents were tough and hardy loggers and mill workers here when there was only one log per truck, and misery whips were a way of life. How did these women do all that work and live some of them to a ripe old age??? Was so happy to find this book and others in the Kindle book section on Amazon.com.

Although this book is quite old, I still took offence at the anti-United States rhetoric. When I got to that I just stopped reading. Most of it was really quite insulting and to think folks up there made such sweeping generalities at such an early stage of both of our country's settling was disappointing.

In the four years of the Korean War, America lost almost fifty-four thousand men, roughly the same number who lost their lives in Vietnam, yet this war has almost disappeared into American history as the ''Forgotten War.'' George-3-7th Marines recounts the bloody Marine infantry campaigns fought in the deadly mountain ranges of Korea. It is a story told by the men who fought and died anonymously in a little-known yet bloody war. These never-before-told tales of the battle-hardened Marines of G-3-7 have been collected and recorded by one of their own. Described by those who experienced the action firsthand, these accounts blend the shocking details of savage, bloody killing with gentle, almost heartbreaking prose seldom seen in a chronicle of war. Jim Nicholson paints a brutally accurate picture of America and the Valhalla culture that shaped the toughness of soldiers in the fifties. He examines the events and mistakes that led to a collision of the free world with the rapidly expanding Communist military machine. He reminds us that the sacrifice of young American boys saved the South Koreans, who now live freely in their beautiful ''Land of the morning calm.'' Awarded the Military Writers Society of America Gold Medal.

George-3-7th Marines: A Brief Glimpse through Time of a Group of Young Marines, by Jim Nicholson

Review ''I think George-3-7th Marines is destined to become the definitive book on the warrior's-eye view of the Korean War. It is the most graphic and human account of ground warfare I have ever read.'' --Ronald M. Wade, Major, USAFR (Ret.)''Jim Nicholson has done for his Marine buddies in the Korean War what Ernie Pyle and Bill Mauldin did for World War II soldiers. He has put a human face on what has been called 'the Forgotten War.' This is a beautifully written account which will move the reader from laughter to tears to gratitude for the bravery of these young Americans.'' --Carol Ferguson, Greenville Herald-Banner columnist''George-3-7th Marines: A Brief Glimpse through Time of a Group of Young Marines captures the essence of who these Marines were, who they are today, and how they came together a blend of World War II Pacific War Veterans, old China Service Marines, and young regulars and reserves, jelling rather quickly into a formidable, highly professional fighting force.'' --W. Joseph Webber, EdD, Dean of Students Emeritus, Texas A&M University-Commerce, CWO-5, USMCR (Ret.)

About the Author Jim Nicholson, MD, is a natural-born storyteller and family physician. He served in the US Marine Corps as a Marine infantryman during the Korean War and received both the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Known to his military friends as ''Nick the BAR man,'' he belongs to the small group of men who carried a Browning Automatic Rifle through five major campaigns and lived to tell the story. After his return from Korea, he married his wife Wanda, and they raised four daughters, Judy, Liz, Jennifer, and Rebecca. He is devoted to the mission of telling the story of the ''forgotten'' Korean War so that future generations will remember the sacrifices made by so many.

These brave Americans risked everything to protect all of us and to secure our country's freedom. We must remember and be thankful. I believe all Americans should read this book. Jim Nicholson does an outstanding job of bringing each and every story to life. His attention to details and his descriptions are so vivid that one can actually imagine how cold the young soldiers were. Nicholson is a gifted writer and will have you hooked from the very beginning I recommend this book with 5 stars. !!!Jim Nicholson has also been awarded the silver star medal 61 years after his service to our country. A true American hero.

This incredible first hand account of the forgotten war brings the reader into the heart and souls of these brave soldiers. This book is a glimpse through their eyes, but also incorporates history in a page turning must! I hope all generations will have a chance to hear this story through JIm Nicholson's exceptional gift of words.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Best told story of Korean War By kphillips This book touches the heart. It was written by a Marine in the George 3-7th Marine and fellow Marines. The excerpts are the actual details of battles won and lost in the Korean War. My Father in Law has several excerpts written of the many battles he was a major part of. It has given me an insight to who he is, a hero, though he would never accept that role. He always says that the real heroes gave their lives there. It is an emotional story, one chapter will be tear gripping and the next chapter you can be laughing hysterically. Their sense of humor was a part of what kept them going and continues to keep them going. They had and still have that strong sense of brotherhood, strong morals, rigid ethics, live a good life and do what you have to do and do it right! This was written to tell the true story of the Korean War and let fellow Marines tell their experiences and versions.

In Hands on the Freedom Plow, fifty-two women--northern and southern, young and old, urban and rural, black, white, and Latina--share their courageous personal stories of working for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. The testimonies gathered here present a sweeping personal history of SNCC: early sit-ins, voter registration campaigns, and Freedom Rides; the 1963 March on Washington, the Mississippi Freedom Summer, and the Movements in Alabama and Maryland; and Black Power and antiwar activism. Since the women spent time in the Deep South, many also describe risking their lives through beatings and arrests and witnessing unspeakable violence. These intense stories depict women, many very young, dealing with extreme fear and finding the remarkable strength to survive. The women in SNCC acquired new skills, experienced personal growth, sustained one another, and even had fun in the midst of serious struggle. Readers are privy to their analyses of the Movement--its tactics, strategies, and underlying philosophies. The contributors revisit central debates of the struggle including the role of nonviolence and self-defense, the role of white people in a black-led movement, and the role of women within the Movement and the society at large. Each story reveals how the struggle for social change was formed, supported, and maintained by the women who kept their "hands on the freedom plow." As the editors write in the introduction, "Though the voices are different, they all tell the same story--of women bursting out of constraints, leaving school, leaving their hometowns, meeting new people, talking into the night, laughing, going to jail, being afraid, teaching in Freedom Schools, working in the field, dancing at the Elks Hall, working the WATS line to relay horror story after horror story, telling the press, telling the story, telling the word. And making a difference in this world."

Review

"The stories of the 'beloved community' of unknown women in Hands on the Freedom Plow convey a transcendent message of how history can be changed by committed individuals who stand up to what is wrong and live by that old freedom song 'Ain't gonna let nobody turn me roun.'"--Essence, Charlayne Hunter-Gault   "Hands on the Freedom Plow underscores the neglected role women played in the civil rights crusade. Women answered the call, assumed weighty responsibilities, experienced persecution and worked together in the cause of freedom and social justice. Their spirit remains alive in this remarkable book."--Charlotte Observer

"Completely upend[s] both traditional and radical histories of the modern civil rights movement by placing women at the center of their narrative and interpretive process.  This is a breathtaking achievement. . . . Because of the power of the storytelling, as a reader I felt as though I were living through events as they were unfolding.  I felt the terror of the violence and the euphoria of triumph."--Women's Review of Books "Powerful, inspiring, and tremendously moving, the oral histories collected here highlight the essential role women played as organizers and activists with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in the South of the early 1960s. . . . Essential reading for anyone interested in the Civil Rights Movement."--Library Journal

"Page after page reveals remarkable stories of courage and defiance. . . .The book opens a window onto the organizing tradition of the Southern civil rights movement."--The Root"These primary source documents read like a modern novel. . . . Of immense interest and value to scholars and students of the Civil Rights Movement."--The Journal of African American History

A Book That Touches the Soul of the Freedom Movement By Bruce Hartford This is a wonderful and fascinating book that illuminates the soul of the Freedom Movement of the 1960s. There are many excellent histories of the Civil Rights Movement that provide the chronologic details of events & outcomes, and many fine biographies that examine the lives of the central figures. But the movement was at heart a mass movement of ordinary people transforming their lives, and the lives of others, with extraordinary courage. In Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts by Women in SNCC 52 women describe in their own words the roots, the meaning, and the personal effect of their own participation.James Baldwin once observed that: "The great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do." No book in recent memory better illustrates the essential truth of that observation than Hands on the Freedom Plow. This is not a book that has to be read in sequence first page to last. Rather, it reminds me of the Talmud, a sea of subjects, insights, experiences, points of view, and historical periods that you sail on voyages of discovery. Each time you dip into it, in whatever chapter, it reveals something new and fascinating.--Bruce Hartford

By AfroAmericanHeritage The Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was the cutting edge of the Civil Rights Movement. Born out of the student sit-ins that erupted on February 1, 1960 in Greensboro North Carolina, within months thousands of students across the south were engaged in similar non-violent protests against racial segregation, risking their lives in the process. But it was far from a spontaneous uprising; the organizers (though mostly college age) were well trained and deeply committed to building a grassroots movement within the communities of the Deep South, working with local people to bring about change. This well-organized book shares the personal narratives of 52 women - northern and southern, young and old, urban and rural, black, white and Latina - who served on the front lines of freedom. The narratives are grouped by regional movements, and also by themes such as issues of personal identity. There are similarities found in some of the narratives; many relate terrifying encounters with the Klan and the public authorities who were supposed to protect them, beatings and deprivations in jail, but also love and overwhelming support from local people who lifted them up, fed them, and sheltered them to the best of their ability in the Jim Crow south. One recurring theme that touched me deeply was how many of these women were just girls, often the first in their family to attend college, terrified not only of being murdered in the Deep South but equally terrified about disappointing their parents by postponing (or sometimes being expelled from) college. Some recount having broken bonds with family which were never mended. But beyond these similarities each woman's story is related through a very personal lens. In fact, they are so intensely personal and compelling that at times I couldn't stop reading, and at other times I had to look away because I was overwhelmed. I especially appreciated the biographical notes, and was heartened by how many of these women continued to work for freedom and peace in some capacity throughout their lives, many as teachers, organizers and activists. As I write this review, Memorial Day is just around the corner. I hope I live to see the day that veterans of the Civil Rights Movement are honored for their valiant service to this country in the cause of true freedom and democracy. They are heroes and deserve to be honored as such, but it's now over 50 years later, and time is running out. This book should be on every public library shelf, and I think it would make an inspiring gift for a daughter heading off to college.Related: American Experience: Freedom Riders Available at Amazon.com120 minutesPBS 2011The powerful harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961 more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South.

Women's Stories from the Heart of the Civil Rights Movement By Miriam Glickman In Mississippi in the 1960's, both whites and blacks could walk on the same sidewalk, but when they approached each other, blacks stepped off and into the gutter so the whites could continue on the sidewalk. This, and all the other inequalities that this symbolized, was a way of life that had existed for generations. It was a world almost unimaginable now.Hands on the Freedom Plow is written not by reporters or historians but by women active in the Civil Rights Movement. These women, many in their late teens and early twenties, took great personal risks to work to change this way of life. In doing so they helped change our country's history. The book is an insider's view of the challenges the women faced in their efforts to bring change - and the ways the Movement changed their lives. The writing is beautifully clear.I was a woman in SNCC and a part of this. I was in the jail cell with Cathy, Penny and Faith in Albany, GA in the summer of 1963. I was in Mississippi for the mock election in the fall of 1963 and there for Freedom Summer in 1964. I stayed until February 1965.I thank my sisters-in-struggle for writing their stories. I found this book deeply moving and feel fortunate that we have it.

When a man claiming to be an alien walks into Indigo's wellness emporium, she isn't really surprised. She was raised on stories of a fierce alien race that secretly interacts with humans. Still, hearing the stories and coming face-to-face with an alien are two very different things.Zilor Nox is sent to Earth to recruit a psychic healer, but he finds so much more in Indigo. She's wild, passionate, and genetically compatible with him--as well as seventy-three other warriors. He wasn't looking for a mate, but now that he's found her, he has no intention of letting her go. And there's no way he's losing her to one of her other suitors.Indigo has spent most of her adult life downplaying her abilities, so when Zilor offers her the opportunity to help Chandar, a woman crippled by years of abuse, Indigo doesn't hesitate. But shortly after Indigo and Zilor leave Earth the "mating pull" ignites and neither can think of anything but indulging the fire. Even after the passionate interlude, Indigo insists her only purpose for leaving Earth is to help Chandar. Zilor is just as determined to prove they are destined to be together. Unfortunately, there are seventy-three other warriors with exactly the same goal.Note to Readers:This book contains detailed descriptions of sizzling passion only suitable for mature readers. From Cyndi: Battle Born is a spinoff of my Shadow Assassins series. However, it's not necessary to have read the earlier books to enjoy these new stories. All of my books are cross-genre romances. They blend elements of science-fiction, fantasy, and paranormal romance. The Battle Born books lean a bit more toward sci-fi, but there is still plenty of steamy romance. Enjoy!

Few remember that two famous orators shared the stage with Lincoln at the Gettysburg dedication. The day’s concluding speech remained lost until recently, when an anthropologist stumbled upon it in a cardboard box at a remote ranch in Wyoming. Forgotten too was the incredible true story of its author, Charles Anderson, a slave owner who risked everything to save the Union. We accompany Anderson on his exciting journey through some of the most dramatic events of the Civil War. Born on a Kentucky slave plantation, he struggles to reconcile a morally bankrupt slavery system that yet holds the nation together. Imagine yourself standing in the crowd as Anderson delivers a bold Union speech in San Antonio just weeks after Lincoln’s election. Imprisoned by Confederate officers, he makes a daring escape, and arrives in New York a national hero. Anderson nearly loses his life in the battle of Stones River. He is elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio on a ticket that defeats exiled Copperhead Democrat Clement Vallandigham. Two years later, Anderson becomes Ohio’s governor. The New York Times called Anderson’s story, “among the most moving and romantic episodes of the war.” This is the inspiring tale of a true patriot. Charles Anderson had the courage to hold steadfast to his convictions, remaining loyal to the Union at a time when nearly all Southerners turned against their country.

Review It's amazing that stimulating and informative Civil War books with whole new perspectives keep coming out of the woodwork. This one makes it a pleasure to be a book review editor. This book is so well written and edited. Don't miss it. - Edward Bonekemper - Civil War News "Dixon introduces his readers to the stranger-than-fictional life of Anderson, son of a Revolutionary, and brother to Robert Anderson of Fort Sumter fame...because of Anderson's storied past, there is something for everyone in this book." - Emerging Civil War Book Reviews

From the Author Do we really need another biography of Lincoln or Washington? David T. Dixon champions the lesser-known characters of American history. We gain new insights from their amazing experiences. B-List history celebrities should be pulled out of the shadows and given their due. Today's history consumers are ready to discard tired myths and get on with serious stories well told. Find their stories and join the B-List History renaissance.

From the Inside Flap The dedication of the Gettysburg Soldier's Cemetery on November 19, 1863, was more than a way to honor fallen heroes at the most famous battle of the war. It was the administration's most important political event since Lincoln's election three years earlier. The three major addresses at Gettysburg were not a random collection of individual orations. They were a carefully planned and constructed ensemble designed to accomplish different yet complimentary purposes. Each speaker intended to eulogize to some degree. Edward Everett's style was deliberate. He sought to educate his audience. Lincoln was inspirational. He intended to elevate the war to a higher moral plane. Anderson was provocative. His address was designed to motivate, even agitate the crowd to support a vigorous prosecution of the war. Lincoln's words entered the canon of American scripture where they remained, timeless and permanent. Everett's speech was printed and then largely forgotten. Anderson's oration had an even shorter exposure, disappearing from sight immediately and remaining buried for nearly 150 years. Author David T. Dixon's fast-paced narrative tells the remarkable life story of Charles Anderson, who kept turning up at critical places and moments in the Civil War. The book features a complete printing of Anderson's lost speech and his hand drawn map of the Stones River Battlefield, both published for the first time.

By Larry Dickinson This is a detailed biography of a great American patriot that I did not know before picking up this book. A must read for the CIvil War and American history enthusiast, it is by no means a stuffy history text. Mr. Dixon brings history to life in this narrative. Although filled with facts and a thorough index, it is an enjoyable read for a non-historian like me. The author does an excellent job of placing us in the middle of this, our country's most challenging tim; the fulminant debates, the bloody battles and the broken lives. There are interesting parallels to be drawn to issues our nation is facing today. Filled with great life lessons, I am a better person as well as a more educated citizen having read this book.

By Amazon Customer Meet Charles Anderson, an amazing patriot who lived through a tumultuous period when the written principles upon which this country was founded were finally forged into iron. Time and again Anderson found himself at the center of powerful confluences of events that tore this country apart, and then joined it again into a more perfect union. He was the son of a famous Revolutionary War hero, and like his father, he would be ready to sacrifice all he owned including his life for this country, but he would never compromise those ideals for which it stood. As the Civil War clouds gathered Anderson used his political skills, his silver tongue, and his strong personality in the struggle to hold the country together while the abolitionists and the slave holders were ripping it apart. When the war started he was trapped in Texas with his family and they were held prisoners of the Confederates. Their daring escape into Mexico was an exciting journey involving spies, compatriots, rebel soldiers and the hot dry desert. When he finally returned to Ohio he was appointed a Colonel in the Union Army where he served with distinction until he was wounded. Later as a political leader his support for the Union was tested against the forces pushing to end the war and settle for peace with the country remaining split in two. Anderson would not stand for this and at every opportunity he spoke eloquently, and with spirit, in opposition to the idea. The Governor of Ohio selected him to “prepare suitable remarks” for the dedication of the new cemetery at Gettysburg. In his address he encouraged all citizens to continue the unfinished business for which the fallen had given their lives. His words were enthusiastically received by the overflowing crowd, which included President Lincoln and some of his cabinet. It was the third speech given at Gettysburg that day, and then it was lost without a trace. The author, David Dixon, by an extraordinary stroke of luck, came across the original hand written speech. This inspired him to follow through with intense research and he accumulated an abundance of facts and details from which he was able to resurrect this marvelous story of the life of Charles Anderson. The prose of this work is sprinkled with minutiae in such a way as to portray the characters as complete individuals, personalities and all.David Dixon has skillfully combined rich history and high drama to produce a very good read.Lawrence Ward, Scituate, MA, January 26, 2016.

By Rob Tolley A full Charles Anderson biography was something I dreamed of when I stumbled upon boxes of his personal papers in Pinedale, Wyoming. The collection included the complete draft of Charles Anderson’s Gettysburg Address. The collection was donated of these papers and documents in historical societies and libraries around the country.David Dixon is the first author to make full use of this discovery. He has created the biography that Charles Anderson’s life is worthy of. And he presents the full text of Charles Anderson’s Gettysburg address to readers for the first time. So it’s here, and historian or not, you’re in for a treat. If you’re just a casual history reader, it’s a true story well told. The story line has themes present in romance novels. If there were lurid details (generally not available to researchers….) the book could have a very dramatic looking cover. Don’t be put off if you’re not a Civil war buff….there’s plenty of human drama here!If you’re well versed in Civil War scholarship, you’re also in for a treat. Every other paragraph connects Charles Anderson’s life to other military and political history luminaries. Charles Anderson attended Jefferson Davis’s wedding? Anderson’s daughter Kitty was a regular dance partner of Robert E. Lee at social gatherings in San Antonio? Are you kidding? New details on speeches at Gettysburg? Who knew? You will, when you close the last page. This biography is extensively and comprehensively researched. .If a resource on Anderson existed, David Dixon sought it out. This effort created what I would refer to as Dixon’s Dilemma. How to include all the fascinating details of Anderson’s life without generating a 1500 page, 3 volume set? One full volume could be written on Anderson’s Gettysburg Address alone.Dixon manages his Dilemma well, giving us the rich fabric of a complete and notable life. But there is more! This book should be a trigger point for further in-depth scholarship. Academic readers be on the alert….your next Civil War paper or conference presentation may be inspired by this book. Read it, and soldier on! The book’s reference notes are your roadmap! So David Dixon gives us the first complete vision of Charles Anderson. It is a fascinating story, well told. I am a graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. I’m proud to see a biography of a fellow Miamian. Coincidence again!

From the beach to the moon--explore the incredible hidden world of sand, seen through a microscope.

To the naked eye, the tiny particles that make up sand are less than inspiring. Under the microscope, however, it's a completely different story. Looking at sand under extreme magnification, we quickly find ourselves immersed in a new world of brilliant colors, organic shapes, and the stunning patterns of nature.

Every grain of sand is a snapshot in time: Each grain originated somewhere and is headed somewhere else. Biogenic sands often contain fragments of the hard tissues from marine organisms such as shells, corals, sponges, sea urchins, forams, and bryozoans. When these organisms die, the hard tissues that are left behind erode into some of the most spectacular grains of sand imaginable. In this book, deep-focus microscope photography, x-ray images, and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy reveal their secrets.

The Secrets of Sand is a virtual tour of sands from across North America. It shows their origins, the environmental forces that have acted upon them, and their journey from bedrock or invertebrate shell to the fine particles that, in countless billions, form our familiar beaches and dunes. It then moves on to an exploration of lunar sand, which has been formed under such alien conditions that it has no terrestrial counterpart. The Secrets of Sand is an amazing voyage of discovery in the ancient past--and the dynamic present--of the earth and our nearest neighbor.

First, the photos: they're beautiful and mesmerizing! I've always been fascinated by super-up-close photos (especially those freaky ones of bug mites and stuff that lives ON your skin or IN your hair), but never thought of, or realized, how intricate and beautiful grains of sand can be.Beyond the photos, I learned a lot about sand itself. How sand is made is interesting - and it's not just sand that makes up sand, so to speak! I especially liked all the places the book covers - sand from beaches, mountains, and more.Kids will love the photos and be really intrigued; adults will love the photos, too, and the science and information about sand.

An amazing book that will change the way you think about the beach By Jeff Serena It's the rare book that exposes the fascinating reality behind a seemingly prosaic subject. The Secrets of Sand does that for sand, a ubiquitous substance that under the microscope turns out to be composed of a startling array of tiny mineral grains, seashells, crystals--even bones and plastic--often polished to a gem-like luster by the action of waves and wind. The authors look at sand from beaches and dunes from around the world, explaining how the sand reveals the geologic and environmental history of each place. There's even a chapter on lunar sand collected by the Apollo missions, showing how the extraterrestrial environment creates sand of a character that cannot be replicated on earth. This is a terrific book for anyone interested in geology and the environment--or just curious about that stuff between your toes on the beach. The color photography is astonishing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really more a picture book of various sands than a book about sand. The pictures really are exceptional. By lyndonbrecht This is an odd book. The text is well-written, as far as it goes, and the photographs are excellent, some superb. But the whole book has a sort of adult gee-whiz-this-is-so-cool tone. The only secrets are that at magnification and with Gary Greenberg's sophisticated techniques, the sand is revealed to be the opposite of the uniform feeling of sugar granules underfoot. There is every conceivable shape and color. The sand is diverse--from volcanic and barrier islands, river sandbars, desert dunes (and some dunes in the US, such as the Lake Michigan dunes), freshwater lake shores. The creation process of various sands is briefly described--abrasion by wave action, river currents, rain, wind, glacial action and more.I was hoping to read more about the geological processes at work in places like beaches and sand dunes. This book disappoints in that regard. It's really a picture book with fairly good commentary. It's a slender book and can be read quickly. The various sand pictures will remind some readers of modern painters, particularly Jackson Pollock.

After Nola Bianca and Luca D'Andrea fall in love in an Italian mountain village, Nola abandons her plans to enter a convent and Luca works toward his dream of going to America. After they marry during Luca's furlough from his World War I army duties, Nola is determined to live a happy life with her new husband, despite her father's belief that she should have married Guido, the man who has loved her for years. When the war ends, Luca heads to America, leaving Nola and their two sons behind and with his promise to return in short order unfulfilled. Nola's love does not waver as she lives for Luca's letters. As years pass, Guido continues to profess his undying love and Nola is harassed by the village constable. Nola is thrilled when, after six years, Luca comes home. After he is warned he will be arrested by Mussolini's henchmen the next day, he escapes during the night, leaving Nola pregnant and alone once again. It is not until years later when she and the three children finally arrive in America that Nola discovers everything is not how she imagined. She emerges triumphant in the decision she must make.

A Family Saga By Morgan McBain As soon as I began reading this tale of passion and hardship witnessed and experienced by the Italian-American author, I could picture the charming mountain village and its characters so vividly and thought "wouldn't this make a teriffic movie!" The history comes through in the dialogue as well as the vignettes of gossip, romance, pathos, and surprising humor . Kump gets the mood of time and place just right. She evokes an intimacy which adds to the understanding of not only Italian immigrants but of so many others who passed through Ellis Island on their quest to become Americans. We recognize the commonality but at the same time realize this story is highly personal, therefore all the more poignant. It's a gentle, satisfying read from a first-time novelist with love and heartbreak at its core.

By Amazon Customer This can’t-put-it-down romantic novel with its graphically descriptive language and strong character development, thrusts the reader back in time—in a tiny village of Italy during the early 20th century.Caught in this closet world, Nola, the main character, finds herself raising her children alone and suffering through the cultural controls of the era while her husband, Luca, frolics through, spending years away.Nola is real! A loyal, self-giving woman many can identify with! I found myself championing Nola as she dealt with the gossip of the village, warding off the advances of the men left behind. She faced the common challenges of the times--washing clothes by the riverbed, no matter the weather, keeping enough food on the table, waiting for, reading and rereading Luca’s letters, trying to find the full meaning in every word. What she had to give in emotional support she gave to her children, other family members and her neighbors.Luca was an opportunist, ambitious and free of the moral and cultural constraints of his family. He found pleasure, and quite stereotypically of the era, made choices to fulfill his needs, insensitive to the impact of his family. He pledged loving loyalty and lived dubiously.Fitting the title, Aprons of Stone describes Nola’s physical environment: stone houses, stone streets, stone landscape. Figuratively it captures the heaviness of her life, giving credence to her emotional fatigue.Kudos to this first time author in capturing memories of her youth and creating a sensitively alive story, guiding us picturesquely through her family’s history. Oh, and you might want to check out how she places herself in the story: hint, check out the little girl Alissa.Nancy Davis

In 1890, Claude Monet bought a house at Giverny in Normandy. Soon he had laid out the first of the three studios in which he could paint. Now the garden that was to be a constant source of inspiration for those paintings claimed all his attention. In 1893, work started on the excavation of the famous pond that he would plant with water lilies, and over which he would build a Japanese bridge festooned with wisteria.Richly illustrated with photographs taken as the seasons unfold, this guide takes us on a tour of the house and gardens, inviting us to explore the settings in which Monet and his family spent their daily lives, from the iconic yellow dining room to the famous salon-studio. Adrien Goetz leads us through the gardens laid out by the father of Impressionism, where we can admire the dazzling planting schemes and successive flowerings that inspired the paintings that now hang in the world's greatest galleries and museums: drifts and avenues of iris, tulips and narcissi, wallflowers, peonies and forget-me-nots, roses and cascades of clematis and wisteria, not forgetting the legendary water lilies.

**The full-length third book in T. S. Joyce’s new Bears Fur Hire series.** Vera Masterson has been called a lot of names through the years: witch, misfit, mad scientist. She’s let the rumors go because they kept her safe. But now she’s ready to leave the secluded island she was banished to, and she’ll need some big protection if she is going to escape the biggest rule of Perl Island: no misfit leaves. She has a plan, a burning desire for a better life, and her sights set on Tobias Silver, a dominant grizzly shifter, Alaskan bush pilot, and muscle-bound shifter enforcer. She doesn’t have much to bargain with, but she has the ability to make something he needs. And the second she lays eyes on the growly, sexy stranger, she’s pretty sure he has exactly what she needs too. Tobias Silver is flying to the notoriously dangerous Perl Island to talk to a misfit about a rumor he’s heard. Some say Vera Masterson can suppress shifter animals, and he’s headed into a brutal hibernation season desperate to cure his grizzly instincts. What he doesn’t expect is to meet a smart-mouthed enchantress who is determined to hire him as her mate. She’s hiding a mountain of secrets, and she’ll need more protection than he’s prepared for, but she could be the answer to all his hibernation problems. All that’s left to do now is keep carefully detached from his accidental mate, because falling for the secretive woman could spell disaster for them both. Content Warning: Explicit love scenes, naughty language, and piles of sexy shifter secrets. Intended for mature audiences.

By Amazon Customer Tobias Silver brother to Ian and Jenner, all three of them are shifters enforcers....his brothers found their mates and he couldn't be happier for them. When Lincoln McCall told him about someone that could help him and his brothers with their bears, he was skeptical yet very intrigued.Vera Masterson was a "witch" who was called an outcast or misfit like some called her. She wanted more out of life and the only way she would make her dreams come true was if she got off the island she was being kept on. The only person who could help her was Tobias, the grizzly bear shifter who caught her eyes.Tobias found himself in an unexpected predicament when he went to make a delivery on Perl Island, he met Vera his would be mate. Their unconditional relationship and adventure led them to fall in love with each other. But despite them getting closer, Vera was hiding something that could put Tobias and his family at risk. When he found out, Tobias was furious at the main person who was behind Vera turning into a shifter.Tobias felt betrayed and rightfully so because he and his brothers trust that person more than anyone only to find out that they had been duped. The twists and turns in MATE FUR HIRE were magnificent.T. S Joyce had me on the edge of my seat with each chapter, the bond between the Silver brothers, their mates and Link tethered them together as an united and loyal family. You all should get your hands on this baby. 5+++

This is the story of Tobias the bear and Vera his mate and how they came to be mates. The struggle she goes through to get in touch with her animal side and to make the scientific strides she hopes will help her mate and his brothers. It's a very good story. I look forward to reading the next book about Link, he's gotten to be one of my favorite characters. I'd certainly recommend this book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very Intriguing and Entertaining Read By winzie Loved it. Tobias story was heart warming, the way they both healed each other is more than words casay TS. Very moving and intriguing, learning that the person who was giving them their orders all this time was their own father..very cold hearty person..who would do what he would for bit anyone else to do and he started playing God so to speak. Losing out of having three wonderful hard working sons who turned out to be better men than he was. I just love happy endings and thus one was the best TS. Now I can't wait to see Link get his life back and be the good person he turned out to be, regardless of the madness that seems to be taking over his live. So far I have read all ur books and now as disappoint...looking forward for more to come. From be of ur number 1fan...always Winsome.
