It demonstrates how this third-world country in the twentieth century, became a world super power in the early twenty-first century. To explain China’s transformation into the second largest economy in the world, only after the United States, this book adopts a general format consisting of overviews on 18 key topics such as geography, economy, law, government, religion, military, social classes and ethnicities, gender, education, and media, followed by more than 250 short entries related to these topics. Readers can quickly grasp China’s experience, and understand the facts and costs of the modernization of the most populous as well as one of the largest countries in the modern world. It is a very useful reference book.

Five Stars By History Reporter This book provides a comprehensive resource on modern China, including complete coverage, such as ideologies from classic Confucianism in 2,500 BC to current communism and nationalism; balanced views with the progress and problems such as poverty, one-child policy, death penalty, and comparison of Chinese standards with Western and American values. All the entries are written by the same author, Professor Xiaobing Li, who lived in China for 30 years. The consistency through the book reflects a Chinese perspective, and an insider’s view offers a better understanding of complicated issues and policies, identifying several general patterns according to China’s own logic in its modernization. Some other titles on the same topic have overlooked the complex nature of the tremendous changes in China during the modern age. This book provides enlightening information for those engaged in the study of Modern China, including high school juniors and seniors, college students, grade school teachers, and those who are interested in the general topic of Asian and China Studies.

By Amazon Customer I’ve found the background data, brief historical information, statistics, and factoids fascinating in this book. For example, it describes China’s death penalty and law enforcement as the following: “China accounts for over 70 percent of criminals executed in the world per year, and some international human rights organizations have put the number at between 10,000 and 15,000 a year, or approximately twenty to thirty executions per day, more than the entire rest of the world combined. The 1997 legislation further decentralized the appeals process, giving final authority to the provincial supreme courts rather than to the national Supreme Court. Executions are often carried out on the same day as sentencing. Both of these measures have increased the annual number of executions in recent years.“In October 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown condemned the Chinese governmental decision to execute a British citizen in Xinjiang. Despite his request, and the British family’s appeals for clemency on the grounds of mental illness, Chinese authorities executed the British
