MAKES THE U.S. ECONOMY UNDERSTANDABLE FOR YOUNG AND OLD By Tom A great Christmas book for young people (and even old folks) who may not understand how money works in our present-day system. Through a clever fairy tale, it traces the system back to the counting houses and gold storage concerns which discovered that, instead of just watching people's money, they could lend it out at interest. Which was followed by financial panic. The villain of the story absconds by night leaving the tiny kingdom of "Pizza and Pasta" destitute and sets up shop in another distant kingdom, "Beer and Strudel" by claiming religious persecution. He does the same thing, causing inflation. This is followed by paper bank notes "good as gold" and a financial crash. The imbecilic king lets him set up a royal central bank, which is followed by income taxes and wars and financial busts and booms, which ultimately brought financial ruin. Helping the villain is a sleazy editor he puts in place in the kingdom's "paper of record" (sounds like the N.Y. Times) to sell the people on the various schemes and cover his tracks. Also helping is a well-paid "chrome dome" university economics expert who comes up with complex and fallacious explanations for all the economic mischief. Many economic fallacies explored in this book along with important quotes from major historical figures. A very timely book.

Mike King has a rare talent, for presenting issues that are usually shrouded by complexity, with clarity and precision. This book is no exception.This particular book present the topics and true events almost in the guise of fables and allegories. Those are excellent techniques, to convey important topics in ways that they are not only easily understood, but more importantly, truly understood. The insights that can be gained from the fables of Aesop, the spiritual teachings of the gospels when explained by the use of allegory, are examples of the power of such literary techniques.This first edition contain a few typos, but otherwise it is superb. It is a excellent book, that children and even dumbed down so-called adults can learn from. Buy it, read it, and pass it on for others to learn from.

By david falcone A vast subject boiled down into a funny short story that taught me more about money and our fraudulent economic system than college and the Wall Street Journal ever did. The tale is followed by a section called "Economyths" which is just as informative. As with all of his books, King demonstrates a unique talent for taking a complex subject and presenting it in concise terms that even a child could understand.In many ways, this is indeed a children's book --- yet it is highly educational for adults.Would have liked to have seen some more meat to the story -- but this is a 5 Star nonetheless. Read it, and pass it on.
