Valor features the thrilling stories that are the fruit of Mark Lee Greenblatt’s interviews with brave American servicemen from twenty-first-century wars. These soldiers, sailors, and Marines have risked their lives several times over for their country as well as for their fellow troops and civilians. Still, until now, their stories have largely gone unnoticed by the public, perhaps lost in the frenzied and often nasty debate surrounding those conflicts. As the author writes, “This generation does not have an Audie Murphy. I set out to change that with this book.” Detailing incredible and evocative feats—including an Army pilot who rescued two fellow pilots from a deadly crash in hostile territory and strapped himself to the helicopter’s exterior for the flight to the hospital—Greenblatt provides glimpses into the minds of these men as they face gut-wrenching decisions and overcome enormous odds. However, this book is much more than tales of riveting action. Each chapter goes beyond linear combat stories to explore each hero’s motivations, dreams, and the genuine emotions that were evoked in the face of extreme danger. Readers will be transported to a variety of settings—from close-quarters urban fighting in Iraq to mountainside ambushes in rural Afghanistan to a midnight rescue in the middle of the Atlantic—as they accompany the men who do not see themselves as heroes but as patriots in the line of duty.

Valor: Unsung Heroes from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front, by Mark Lee Greenblatt

Review Criminal and ethics investigative attorney Greenblatt provides nine compelling tales of the bravery of U.S. military personnel facing extreme duress and mortal danger. The author uses insightful interviews with each subject to supply details of the background and motivation that enabled these marines, sailors, and soldiers to prevail in grave life-and-death situations. Voices range from a hard-hitting marine who volunteered to piggyback an injured 'brother' through an Iraqi insurgent shoot-out to an inexperienced army specialist in Afghanistan whose determination and quick thinking prevented an ambush on his base—even after he sustained a devastating injury. Many of these stories have received relatively little publicity. The author explains that it was his desire to demonstrate that the men and women of today’s armed forces possess courage and selfless character comparable to military heroes of the past. VERDICT There are other collections of the daring exploits of the U.S. military in the Middle East, but for the mature reader interested in gripping and often intensely violent narratives of perilous military action, this collection proves riveting. (Library Journal)Rather than collectively tuning in and remembering the sacrifices made by some for our sake, we tune out and go to the beach. Mark Lee Greenblatt’s Valor: Unsung Heroes from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Home Front could single-handedly save this important holiday. (Washington Times)The stories in Valor capture very powerfully the extraordinary courage, selfless service, and sacrifice that our young men and women have demonstrated repeatedly in the wars of the post–9/11 period. Valor’s accounts of extraordinary heroism in Iraq and Afghanistan reinforce the increasingly widespread conviction—with which I strongly agree—that the young men and women who have served our country ‘downrange’ in the past decade truly are America’s New Greatest Generation. (General David H. Petraeus, U.S. Army (Retired), Commander, Multi-National Force-Iraq (2007-2008), U.S. Central Command (2008-2010), International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (2010-2011))Valor is an absolutely gripping foray into the realities of modern warfare. This book, the best collection of war stories from the all-volunteer military, is a priceless oral history. In its pages, Mark Lee Greenblatt offers us a glimpse into the lives of men who choose to move to the sound of the guns. The heroes in Valor show the highest form of love for their fellow soldiers and Marines. While our society too often raises self-interest to a high art form, Greenblatt helps show us the moral superiority of a truly selfless citizenry. (Thomas A. Kolditz, Brigadier General (ret.), US Army; professor emeritus, US Military Academy West Point; and author of In Extremis Leadership)It’s obvious from these incredible stories that we certainly do still have the spirit of Audie Murphy in our military. The daring accounts featured in Valor give us strength and hope for our future as a nation. (Sammy L. Davis, Sergeant First Class (ret.), US Army; Medal of Honor recipient)Valor is composed of stories where the rubber meets the road in combat. The warrior ethos—never leave a buddy behind, do anything and everything to protect your brother warriors—is undeniable in each man’s story. This book serves as a reminder that, amid the glamour of today's technology, the individual soldier, sailor, and Marine remain the linchpin to our success on the battlefield today. (H.C. “Barney” Barnum Jr., Colonel (ret.), US Marine Corps; Medal of Honor recipient)I was privileged and honored to lead US troops in combat in both Iraq and in Afghanistan and saw the best of them every day under the most demanding conditions in our military history. They were—they are—America’s new Greatest Generation, and they were precious to me beyond words. I’ve stood next to their broken bodies as they desperately clung to life. I’ve walked innumerable sets of their honored remains onto the backs of our transport aircraft for the flight home to heartbroken families and a grieving nation. Sadly, little of the literature of these wars has celebrated the individual heroism of these young actors in their moments of truth . . . until now. In Valor, Mark Lee Greenblatt has honored this incredible service, and, in doing so, has performed a great service for America. In his words, crafted with marvelous eloquence, Mark has captured the raw, gut-wrenching emotion of battle and its aftermath in all its forms and thus has erected the ultimate monument to America’s veterans, including the fallen, the wounded, and their precious families. We owe him, indeed all America owes him, a great debt of thanks. (General John R. Allen, US Marine Corps (ret.); commander of US and coalition forces in Afghanistan, 2011–2013)Military heroes will always be a part of America, but they are increasingly unknown to the public. They continue to do amazingly brave things as if they were all in a day’s work. As Greenblatt has shown, humility and valor seem to coincide when the stakes are mortal. Heroes don’t only save lives and accomplish seemingly impossible feats at great risk to themselves—their stories can also inspire us to face lesser dangers and fears in our own lives. (Howard T. Prince, II, Brigadier General (ret.), US Army; recipient of a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts; University of Texas at Austin)What Mark Lee Greenblatt has deftly shown are genuine reflections of what ordinary men accomplish when placed under extraordinary circumstances. Valor has established, in my mind, that these men have proven themselves as the new greatest generation. (Jim Livingston, Major General (ret.), US Marine Corps, Medal of Honor Recipient)With these dramatic accounts of heroism—in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq and in a daring rescue of a civilian from a storm in the Atlantic—Mark Greenblatt gives us a close-up view of the uncommon valor that is common among America's military today, as it has been throughout our history. Such heroes are often reluctant to discuss their remarkable deeds, but Greenblatt has managed to persuade some of them to talk not only about what they did, but about their emotions at the time, why they volunteered for this dangerous duty, and—most awe-inspiring—what makes a person risk his own life to save another. Valor is an eloquent tribute from someone who grew up hearing tales of Audie Murphy and the Second World War to the heroes of another Great Generation. (Ambassador Paul Wolfowitz, former deputy secretary of defense)The issues with 'unsung heroes' is first finding them, and secondly, corroborating their stories, thirdly writing a good tale. Greenblatt has done all three. . . . Good soldiers, all, this is a fine testament to the men with principles, ethics, and humanity. (Cottage Country Reflections)I was spending a little time today listening to Mark Greenblatt talking about Valor. He recently wrote a book of that name to celebrate some of the unsung heroes from our recent wars. So many incredible sacrifices have been made in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Greenblatt wanted to highlight a few of them in order to represent the many. (Front Porch Fighter)Valor is the fruit of Mark Lee Greenblatt’s interviews with brave veterans who have incredible stories to tell. Many of these soldiers have risked their lives several times over for their fellow soldiers and their country. Still, until now, their stories have largely gone unnoticed by the public, perhaps lost in the frenzied and often nasty debate surrounding the wars of the twenty-first century. As the author writes, “This generation does not have an Audie Murphy. I set out to change that with this book.” From the close-quarters urban Iraq war to rural Afghanistan and the stormy Atlantic, Greenblatt’s accounts allow readers a glimpse into the heart and soul of true heroes.

Kerrigan Mark Lee Greenblatt asks and answers the right questions, such as explaining performance in combat by telling true stories of brave Americans. In my opinion, Greenblatt's research is on solid ground not only by citing the work of the ancients like Plato and Aristotle but also was guided by the more contemporary work of Mike Matthews, a prominent military psychologist at West Point. Matthews recent book Head Strong provides a psychological construct to performance in combat and an insightful presentation for enhancing military leadership. As to the answers of functioning well in life-threatening environment like combat, the author of Valor by telling the stories of American heroes and weaves into their stories key themes like: maintaining focus on the mission in the face of dire consequences, humility and selfless service , the paradox of risk-seeking behavior, and the automatic response imbued by countless drills. This book should be required reading for students who enjoy the comforts of civilian life in America yet remain unaware of the sacrifices made by soldiers, sailors and Marines who risked their lives for their country, fellow servicemen and yes... civilians who do not even know who Audie Murphy was in the greatest generation. Thanks to Mark Lee Greenblatt for letting this generation know there are plenty of Audie Murphy's in our midst.

Fantastic Insight By Reader Being a veteran myself, I truly appreciated this collection of first-hand accounts of their combat experiences in today’s wars. The author has definitely provided some great food for thought. As he said in the book, I am glad someone had the wherewithal to record these histories for these brave American heroes. Not one story is better than the one before or after. Some of the themes that crossed over into each story are the comradery and brotherhood (or sisterhood or even personhood, if such a term exists) among the soldiers, the usefulness of training so repetitive and quick-action actions/tasks become instinctive and the selflessness of each soldier in the face of deadly threats. There is a lot of information provided about soldiers today, but I have not read anything like this book—which contains first-hand accounts that thrust the reader right into the fray, regardless where he/she is or his/her level of experience. I think more people should read this book to more fully understand the realities of the military and especially of war. If you are looking to more fully understand and appreciate what our men and women encounter and feel in combat, this book will definitely provide that to you. I highly recommend it. I received this from Library Thing to read and review.

1335 years ago, on the tenth day of the new year, in the early hours of the afternoon, on a sand-dune at Karbala, south of the current Iraqi capital, a small convoy of men, women, and children was savagely massacred by an army of over 30,000. It took the monstrous military force little more than four hours to completely and utterly annihilate the encampment. The small group led by Imam Hussein, grandson of their prophet, though mythically defiant, suffered a crushing defeat. The remaining women and children were taken into custody. The caravan then accompanied the severed heads of the martyrs and was paraded throughout the nation in a humiliating spectacle amidst demented festivities and celebrations and then, everything was over.. Everything. Yet in the midst of the chaos and senseless brutality, Hussein became a singular figure who fills history with his grace and grandeur, becoming a meta-historical legend, epitomizing the perennial struggle between good and evil. This is his true, albeit unbelievable story.

Very Thorough By IHJ Written as a dialogue and a story, 'God's Sacrifice' details the story of the martyrdom of Hussain son of Ali in the year 61 after Hijra (the emigration, aka start of the Islamic calendar). It gives a very thorough accounting of the situation that led up to the great event and details each of the people involved. While I think the book is a five star rating, there are several typographical errors and font issues when typing Arabic names that make reading a bit more difficult. They seem to be quite frequent about half way through the book but were not so in the first half - perhaps someone got tired of the detailed editing required?!? Overall, the book does offer some polemical commentary on the character of the 'villains' and though it could do without it, it does not detract too much from the reading of the story. I bought 3, so I recommend it highly.

This story is not one of rainbows and happily ever after’s, so if you’re looking for that, stop reading. My story is fucked and deluded, just like the person telling it. You see, I’m a trafficker. I traffic gorgeous young men for my clients. The lonely old women whose husbands are more than likely off cheating on them. You’re not going to like me; I’m not going to lie. I’m a bitch, a manipulator, the type of girl your mother warned you about. *This book can be read as a standalone*

Aria is a total badass with a mouth to go with it. She takes her job seriously but then you find out why she does what she does from past treatment. You can't help but love her. She says and does stuff we all wish we could at times.

By aschae Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review...AWESOME book! Just finished it in one sitting... as I think I have with all of TL Smith's books! I LOVED Aria and this book was so much more than I expected. Having seen bits of her in previous books I was so exciting to hear her story as this girl cracks me up... like truly had me laughing my a$$ off reading this. So many great interactions, great characters, just can't say enough... Mika was not only sexy as hell but a complete sweetheart, so in love with Aria from afar and he was clearly willing to do whatever he had to to win her over. And this girl was tough.. I winced reading parts and felt as though I was more hurt than she clearly did at times. LOVED this book and would highly recommend it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Disliked heroine By romance4ever I disliked the story and Aria. I thought that I would warn up to Her. I thought that Aria would redeem herself or at least become a better person by the end of the story. I thought she would learn to love Mika like he claimed he loved her or love someone else besides herself. None of those things happened and because they didn't she and the story left a bad taste in my mouth. She had absolute no remorse or regret for kidnapping undeserving men and beating and torturing them to the point they broke and then selling them. No only did she not feel bad about it but she loved it. It sexually excited her and that did not change. At the end of the story she gave lip service to loving Mika but it was just meaningless words. All telling and no showing. A few chapters before she participated an orgy with him and his lover and then easily walked away after she got off while they were still going at it. Then shortly thereafter she went on a date during which after around 20 minutes asked the date if he would be willing to do it with her. She got bored when he refused to answer. Mika claims of loving her were no more believable but at least he showed emotional attachment to her even if it was a result of his obsession with her. I would be more likely to believe he loved her if he could kept it in his pants when around other woman. If nothing else I want fidelity between the hero and heroine after they get physical with each other. That did not happen here. It should not bother me that he didn't as it did not concern Aria in the least. He was shocked that Aria did not care that he had sex with other woman. He shouldn't have been. She was heartless and emotionally deficient. There is no way that I believe that they will stay together. She will never love him and eventually he will find someone who can and will. I would love to read that story.

Though adventurers, explorers, colonizers, buccaneers, privateers and pirates are the groups best associated with exploits in the Caribbean, behind these were powerful kings and wealthy aristocrats. There were dukes, lords, mayors and barons behind these ventures. Overseas ventures and colonization were driven by an aristocracy and not by sea-fearing mariners and daring risk-takers as are common notions strewn by historic accounts. Overseas ventures were calculated investments and not random adventurism. Ventures were planned, capital was raised, agreements were reached, companies were established and leaders were contracted to conduct these missions. The powerful and the wealthy operated through sea-captains, managers and mercenaries. In effect, many who are cited as “discoverers and colonizers” were really hired hands, though several wealthy and powerful aristocrats ventured personally into the so-called New World. For example, Sir Thomas Roe, a pioneer in the settling of Virginia; was on his way to India as an emissary of King James I when he visited Tobago in 1611.

Colonisation - the stark reality By Ros This small book by the author who is born and bred in the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago and the editor of a well-respected Tobago magazine, provides a well-researched account specifically concentrating on the most aggressive war years of Tobago's history. Its narrative is lucid, which makes for easy reading. The author's perspective is starkly and succinctly clarified from the first page, detailing the misunderstanding of the interpretation of 'colonialism'. Dispelling the historic accounts and associations of explorers, buccaneers and pirates, being the main culprits of rampaging and pillaging of the Caribbean. The case in point with Tobago, being that of premeditated, systematic exploitation for mercantile gain by kings, wealthy aristocrats (dukes, lords and barons) who funded and masterminded these undertakings, as well as the usual suspects. The naval warfare between the Spanish, Dutch, French and English occurring multiple times in claims and counter claims, demonstrating the importance of this small island as a coup.A good read for those interested in history, Caribbean history and an ideal educational history book for schools, especially in Tobago. Equally it adds to what I consider an explicit deficiency of books on Caribbean history.

This is the story about the early beginnings of rock 'n' roll in England and the arrival of The Beatles in Hamburg where they first met Tony Sheridan. They began working with him, backing Tony on their first hit record – 'My Bonnie' which sold over a million copies in America. Brian Epstein later asked Tony to return with The Beatles to England and continue working with them. Tony declined the offer and The Beatles went on to make history. The author was with Tony Sheridan in the 'Jets' from the very beginning in London, and later with him in the 'Star Combo' – the resident band at the 'Star Club'. Many other great British and American bands visited and performed at this club in Hamburg during the 60's. Tony and the band played alongside or toured with many of them including: Gene Vincent, Chubby Checker, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Tommy Rowe, Brenda Lee, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Kingsize Taylor, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Joey Dee and the Starliters and the weird and astonishing Screaming Lord Such. This is the story about those incredible times.

In 1842 a small group of Irish nationalists, who would later be known as Young Ireland, founded the Nation newspaper. They saw their mission as awakening the Irish people to the fact that they were an historic nation that should determine its own future. This book deeply explores the Young Ireland vision of history. Often selective and polemical, but ultimately compelling and powerful, their vision would inspire generations with a pride in Ireland's history, and would set the scene for the revolutionary period 1916-21 that followed.

Young Ireland And the Writing of Irish History, by James Quinn

Review 'Educate, that you might be free. We are most anxious to get the quiet, strong minded people who are scattered throughout the country to see the force of this great truth' - Thomas Davis; 'Quinn has crafted an insightful and impartial examination into a movement which had little interest in impartiality; an exploration into why such history was written and how it was received. While his book will particularly appeal to students of the period, his style is accessible enough for anyone to enjoy.'17 May 2015, The Sunday Business Post 'James Quinn's important new book ... is a well-researched, well-written and balanced study of the ideas and writings of Young Ireland. The structure and layout of the chapters deal in succession with the environment in which they began their mission; their reading of history; their writing of it; the uses they made of the past; their attempt to make history for themselves; the narrative they wrote of their own times; how their work was continued by later writers; and, finally, their legacy.' 20 June 2015, Donal McCartney, The Irish Times 'James Quinn has analysed Young Ireland's approach to the writing of Irish history with great skill. This is a remarkably well-crafted study, grounded in deep research and written with an elegance of expression which is rare today in works of scholarly history. It is a major contribution to the intellectual history of our country.' 3 July 2015, Felix M. Larkin, The Irish Catholic 'James Quinn's new book (indirectly) allows us to appreciate how far we have moved on from insular and unsophisticated debates on revisionism in its scholarly treatment of a defining chapter of Irish identity and ideology, the fashioning of genuinely Irish history by the Young Irelanders. True, the historical writings of Young Ireland are rarely read nowadays and they produced no "great" historian or "great work" of history. But Quinn, unperturbed by the focus on the more fashionable actors and phases of Irish history, had previously taken on the "outmoded and even repugnant" John Mitchell.'July/August 2015, History Ireland 'Quinn keeps his narrative a tight one, making every page and paragraph count. This is a story of ideas, not of events (the 1848 Rebellion is told in barely a paragraph) nor of people (though there is a list of biographies at the end to help the reader keep track of who's who), and Quinn is well able to explain them, and the motivations of the men (they were overwhelmingly men, no Countess Markieviczs here) who nurtured them, spread them as best they could and, in the case of those exiled or imprisoned, suffered for them.' July 2015, --The Irish StoryQuinn does a brilliant job of uncovering the legacy Young Ireland left behind and the influence that leaders like Davis, Duffy, and Mitchel had on later generations of writers. --Irish America Magazine

About the Author James Quinn is the Managing Editor of the Royal Irish Academy's Dictionary of Irish Biography. His specialist interest is in the writing of Irish history in the nineteenth century. A fascinating study of the men who sought to use history and make better patriots By Daniel Murray James Quinn’s 'Young Ireland and the Writing of Irish History' is a fascinating look at a group of ideological intellectuals who sought to make the rest of 19th century Ireland as interested in the country’s history as they were. The purpose of this mission was not for the sake of history itself; indeed, the Young Irelanders, as these men became known, were as contemptuous of overly dry works of impartial scholarship as they were of textbooks aiming to make the Irish into better Britons.History, as far as they were concerned, was there to excite, to arouse passion and, ultimately, to inspire its audience into becoming better patriots. Orwell had yet to say: “He who controls the past controls the future,” but the Young Irelanders had already come to that conclusion. With that purpose in mind, the Young Irelanders founded the 'Nation' newspaper in 1842 to publish heroic tales of derring-do, the more battles the merrier, and with an emphasis on ‘great men’ such as Owen Roe O’Neill, Hugh O’Neill and Patrick Sarsfield. In this, they were drawing much of their inspiration from contemporary Romantic writers such as Thomas Carlyle, Jules Michelet and Augustin Thierry, as the Young Irelanders were the first to admit (though the anti-Irish snobbery in Carlyle was best ignored), and the Romantic movement in general, which celebrated the past as a source of inspiration, as opposed to the more forward-thinking and self-consciously progressive thinking behind the Enlightenment a generation before.A strength of this book is Quinn’s skill at providing the intellectual context in which the Young Irelanders thought and wrote, both within Ireland (the Young Irelanders were happy to take advantage of works by more apolitical Irish antiquarians to buttress their own research) and on the Continent, where nationalists were similarly eager to uncover the true soul and essence of their countries through history and folk culture. However, Quinn is careful to avoid cluttering his narrative with excessive detail on side subjects, with the focus remaining on the Irish scene.Besides the Nation, the other great literary project of the Young Irelanders was the Library of Ireland book series, beginning in 1845 with the publication of 'History of the Volunteers of 1782', and followed by other books on subjects such as the Nine Years War, the Plantation of Ulster and the Confederation of Kilkenny. Envisioned as a collection of interlocking chapters on Irish history, the Library of Ireland went on to exceed all sales expectations, with several of its titles appearing on R. Barry O’Brien’s ‘100 Best Irish books’ in 1866.For all its success, the Young Irelanders’ mission of education was overtaken by events (“events, dear boy”), firstly by the straining of their alliance with Daniel O’Connell over issues such as that of political violence (O’Connell solidly against it, the Young Irelanders studiedly ambivalent), and then by the Famine, which rendered the high-minded talk of historical heroes meaningless when people were dying in the fields. It was a shift in priorities which the 'Nation' had no choice but to recognise: “What man with a heart would sit to write Ballad History while his country perishes?”Nonetheless, the Young Irelanders held a moderate line, repudiating proposals like a national rent strike. This angered the more radical members such as John Mitchel who proceeded to set up his own newspaper: 'United Irishman'. As the title would suggest, Mitchel had no problem with the notion of armed insurrection, with the 'United Irishman' helpfully giving tips on the best way to construct a barricade or drill with a pike. The government’s severe response to this increased militancy (such as the sentence of fourteen years of transportation for Mitchel) prompted the ramshackle Rebellion of 1848 though, as Quinn argues, the hero-worship of past revolutionaries such as Robert Emmet (true to form, Mitchel chose Emmet’s brother-in-law as his defence counsel at his trial) made the decision to follow in their idols’ revolutionary footsteps an inevitable one.Despite the end of the Young Irelanders post-Rebellion as a coherent group, many of their leading members continued on with their mission to present and propagate an acceptably pugnacious view of Irish history. Additionally, having propelled themselves into a role of their own onto the historical stage via the 1848 Rebellion, they were keen to defend it, depicting the uprising as essential, O’Connell as an untrustworthy opportunist, the Famine as a British plot, and each other as either uncontestably virtuous (if they were still friends) or as miserable rogues (if they were not).It was at this post-mortem stage that the Young Irelanders achieved their greatest success, for in many ways the subsequent generations were to follow their lead in writing history. Mitchel’s 'Jail Journal' was to provide the template for the prison memoirs of the likes of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, Michael Davitt and Thomas Clarke. O’Connell’s reputation struggled to recover from the polemics against him (the centenary of his death in 1947 was to be a muted affair), and the idea of the Famine as a plot as much as a natural disaster has been passed down through historical works as recent as Tim Pat Coogan’s 2012 book. The turn of the 20th century was to find an Ireland which readily responded to Young Ireland’s telling of history as a call to arms: an officer in the Mayo IRA during the War of Independence remembered his father reciting Mitchel’s 'History of Ireland' “off by heart.” The first history book Éamon de Valera ever read was Alexander Martin Sullivan’s 'Story of Ireland', while Arthur Griffith’s 'United Irishman' owed inspiration for its title as much to Mitchell’s original newspaper as to the 1798 participants. This is a short book at only 147 pages, not including the extensive bibliographic notes, but Quinn keeps his narrative a tight one, making every page and paragraph count. This is a story of ideas, not of events (the 1848 Rebellion is told in barely a paragraph) nor of people (though there is a list of biographies at the end to help the reader keep track of who’s who), and Quinn is well able to explain them, and the motivations of the men (they were overwhelmingly men, no Countess Markieviczs here) who nurtured them, spread them as best they could and, in the case of those exiled or imprisoned, suffered for them.Quinn is very much not a writer of the Young Ireland school, keeping as he does his tone admirably impartial as befits the Managing Director of the Royal Irish Academy’s 'Dictionary of Irish Biography'. But towards the end, he lets slip a glimmer of admiration at the Young Irelanders’ achievements. It is hard for even a cynical reader to not feel likewise. For better or for worse, 20th century Ireland was as much a product of the Young Ireland movement as anything. This book should do much in making this team of intellectuals, pedagogues and would-be revolutionaries better known.

In 1978 Hans Cousto, a Swiss mathematician and musicologist discovered the natural formula of the "Cosmic Octave" as the link between different kinds of perodically occurring natural phenomena, such as the orbit of the planets, the weather, colors, rhythms and tones. This extraordinary book explains these relationships with examples of astronomical data comparing the frequencies of planatery orbits, in architectural works, in ancient and modern measuring systems, the human body, music and medicine. Cousto reveals how music is truly the language of the cosmos and of the natural world.

I see that 22 out of 24 readers of his review said it helped them. I would hate to think that so many were missing out on a worthy treatise on how the Universe is mathematically put together. I hope to undo some of his damage with my review. I have Masters degrees, including Math, Physics and Chemistry. I understand the details of what this book puts forth. I can say with resounding thanks, that all is well, read in harmony, in the Universe and this book goes a long way past other proofs. What Mr. Hirschorn objects to, a factor that successfully reduces the periodic orbits and frequencies of each body in our solar system, defies many mathematical traditions. The author may not understand the significance of this factor, as we did not understand the significance of Pi for so many centuries. The fact that the sun, planets and moon stand in the same frequency ratio as the notes on our most harmonic scale is the point, a brilliant one at that. In number theory, a science worthy of the best minds, we seek to understand these relationships between quantities. What Mathematician can explain the Law of Nines in our own number system? Mr. Hirschorn may reduce the studied body of work on that subject alone to mere "ramblings of numerology," our best minds have thought otherwise. How can one be a mathematician and not a musician? The significance of what we see to what we hear, the frequencies we respond to and how they repeat themselves from DNA outward, are the stuff we were made to understand. This book takes us further than we have traveled before. Have a great voyage! Once you leave the portal of what we don't want to be true, and travel into the awesome resonance of the Universe and what we see before us, your eyes, heart and mind will be in for so many surprises. Don't miss this one...

By artemis robison The Cosmic Octave is a gem of a handbook for anyone interested in understanding how music is truly the language of the cosmos and of the natural world. Cousto, a brilliant german mathematician, writes succinctly and in terms that are easy to grasp even for non-scientists. He outlines the basics of how specific musical tones and intervals are related to the color spectrum, periods of time, the sun and each of the planets in our solar system, and all the natural cycles and rythms we find in the world around us. By showing the reader the science behind how all life processes are tuned to specific tones or groups of tones, we are able to glimpse into the mystery of why and how music is a universal human language, indeed a universal language of life itself. For anyone curious about why music can affect listeners so profoundly, this book offers fascinating insight. And for readers interested in a more in-depth study of this subject, the appendices are rich with detailed scientific information and reference. For anyone pursuing a musical path, this handbook is invaluable as a guide and a powerful tool. It outlines the basics of how music may be created in resonance with the language of the universal life force. At a time when much of human civilization is out of sync with the earth and indeed at odds with it, Cousto offers a key to how music can be created to purposefully bring people into realignment with our roots in the natural world. Cousto is a brilliant spokesperson for all interested in how humanity may evolve wisely and gracefully into the new millenium. Certainly he is to be praised for his ability to educate and inspire a wide audience. The Cosmic Octave is a treasure chest in a very small package. Don't miss it.

By Midwest Book Review In The Cosmic Octave, mathematician and musician Hans Cousto shows the reader the intimate connection between levels of vibrating periodical phenomena and how the revolutions of the planets are related to musical beats, sounds and colors -- as well as the microcosmic vibratory qualities of a single cell. The Cosmic Octave will prove to be of great and enduring interest for students of metaphysics, the harmonics of music, and the relationships of colors, tones, and the cosmology of planets.

The War of Independence By Diane With the perspective of someone only 100 years removed from the Revolutionary War, John Fiske carries one along on the tumultuous ride of our forefathers. His narrative is at once informative, thought-provoking and attention-grabbing. It reads much like a work of fiction, compelling one to want to find out how it ends. Many of the facts he shares were never introduced in the public school system. In fact, it was a revelation to me that, not only were many members of the British Parliment in favor of American independence, but the British people benefitted from our struggle, as well. Another interesting angle was the illumination of Washington's military genious. I have recommended this book to my British son-in-law, in hopes he will no longer think of the colonists as self-serving brigands, whose rebellion had much more behind it than a mere desire to avoid taxes.

The author does a fantastic job of explaining why the revolution happened. I had no clue that two generations earlier, the American colonists in MA were more free. With that knowledge, the revolution makes much more sense. Also, the idea that the revolution was not Americans vs. Brits, but a war of ideas I had never heard. The author clearly states why Washington was so needed. And the plotting against him.The author also gives a great list of books to try.Picked up for free - 2,694 locations so not long at all. Definitely grab if interested in history at all.

An entertaining and insightful 19th century look at the Revolution By Gary Hoggatt As a fan of American Revolutionary history, 19th century writing, and free books, when I saw John Fiske's The War of Independence free for Kindle, I was immediately intrigued. Published in 1889, the 100th anniversary of George Washington becoming the first president and, as Fiske puts it, closing out the Revolutionary era, The War of Independence is a brisk, entertaining introductory read with surprising depth in areas that are often ignored and a writing style that has all the flavor of the late 19th century.Fiske begins his approach by explaining the different relationships with the British crown each colony had before the Revolution. This goes a long way in revealing why certain colonies were more revolutionary than others. He gives a good summary of the various military and economic stresses in the colonial/crown relationship before the Revolution sparked, such as the French and Indian War and the various acts and taxes enacted by Parliament. One of the other strengths of this book is its attention to the British politics driving their approach to the rebellion. The assorted factions vying for dominance between the King and the different Parliamentary parties goes a long way in explaining the pre-Revolution Parliamentary acts that went over so poorly and the different strategies pursued by the British during the war itself. Fiske does a fine job explaining the different British players and how their motivations affected British policy.Fiske does not get too into the actual military movements of the war. He does discuss the major battles, but he does not get into the details of any of them. For an introductory survey, this is a fair approach, and there's no shortage of entire books about the major battles, so it doesn't bother me, but it is worth noting.Fiske meant this volume as an introductory history for students. That leaves it pretty accessible even today, and his energy and pace help keep the story moving. It's still a 19th century work, though, so it's written at a higher level than one might expect today. As an analogy, consider that Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 Treasure Island is a "boy's adventure" book of that same era, and compare it to today's YA books. Fiske's student volume bears a similar relationship to today's student non-fiction.Anyone interested in an exciting and revealing history of the Revolutionary War would do well to check out Fiske's The War of Independence. Fiske does an excellent job of telling an entertaining story, and the writing style is full of 19th century flavor while still being accessible. It's a well worth reading, and you can't beat the price.

Learning to draw amazing unusual subjects

This eBook is about how to draw various robots, which you can find underneath the chapters. There are various types of robots drawn and explained with steps about how you can draw them at home. This eBook also focuses not only on the robot drawing but sketching too. Also some of the things a robot are more likely to have like a hammer robot a normal robot have been shown. Sketching gives anything a better look, so some sketching always help in all drawings. Each drawing must have a structure and a robot is the same. On the other hand, dissimilar to the human body you can draw a robot based off a human structure or simply something altogether cutting edge with its own structure and shape, however in this instructional exercise we have the humanoid structure to work from, thus we begin off with an oval shape for the head as regular and after that every one of the joints, for example, the shoulders, the elbows, the wrists, the pelvis, the knees and the lower legs are all generally outlined in as round circles and after that the biceps, the lower arms, the thighs and the calves are all portrayed in a wiener molded.

I want to give him a gift not just something I will buy but something I made an effort. And I thought of drawing a robot for him. I know how to draw but of course, I still need a guide and this book didn't disappoint me. I made it and had a great outcome. A big help indeed.

The Savage Years: Tales From the 20th Century, by Rupert Colley

About the Author Rupert Colley was born one Christmas Day, which means, as a child, he lost out on presents. Nonetheless, looking back on it, he lived a childhood with a "silver spoon in my mouth" - brought up in a rambling manor house in the beautiful Devon countryside.  It's been downhill ever since.   He was a librarian for a long time, a noble profession. Then he started a series called History In An Hour, "history for busy people", which he sold to HarperCollins UK.    Rupert now lives in London with his wife, two children and dog (a fluffy cockapoo) and writes historical fiction, mainly 20th century war and misery.  Historical fiction with heart.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Savages. By Lisa History was a subject that I hated back in school, but I discovered in my teens and twentys that I loved historical fiction. I'm now 52, and I still dislike history books. They're so dry and mind numbingly boring. This book, I loved. Bite size chunks of history. Most of which I knew, but had forgotten the specifics, and some of which I've never known at all. I wasn't bored reading this, at all. I've even gone so far as to get Mr. Colley's book about Stalin. I pretty certain I'm going to enjoy that too! Funny, all the time that's passed in these pages, and we and our governments have learned nothing, or maybe many have chosen not to learn from the past. Yep, I'd recommend this book and author.

Ashanti Cry is a historically accurate account of slavery in the Caribbean. It tells story of five siblings who were captured from their village in Ghana, in 1807, and brought to the island of Jamaica, where they were separated from each other and sold into forced servitude. After several years, enduring the atrocities of the sugar plantation system, as fate would have it, Adisa, the main character in this story, found himself destined to cross path with the sumptuous mistress of the plantation. She was a very pretty woman, a lot younger than her husband, but who had placed her on the shelf, as he sought the beds of his young slave girls, where he supposedly found greater sexual gratification. This beautiful, sex-starved white woman soon placed Adisa in her crosshairs; he was handsome, muscular and strong, and in her eyes, was the perfect answer to the sexual frustration she had been suffering. Throwing all caution to the wind, she brought this young African into her bed, where she indulged herself lavishly in the pleasures of the flesh. This forbidden love affair was as dangerous as it was steamy, and the writing was on the wall from the very beginning; this wasn’t going to have a good ending. And just as they both should have perceived; the consequences were disastrous! But somehow, at the end of it all, after the dust had settled, the siblings were miraculously reunited, and after a spectacular chain of events, they managed to turn their fortunes around in a most remarkable way.

About the Author Although Milton G Boothe is a British certified Chartered Accountant and an IRS Enrolled Agent with many years of tax and financial accounting experience, he is also an individual who has a fervent love for creative works. Although being currently employed in private tax practices where he helps people resolve their tax problems, minimize their taxes, and routinely represents the interests of taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service; this has not served in any way to thwart his desire to create great works of fiction. So even as a tax accountant, who has written several publications on tax matters, Milton G Boothe also wears the cap of a record producer and songwriter, and has penned several novels, including “One Silly Little Mistake,” “Intricate Situations,” “Passenger of the Last Ship” and “Invisible Rainbows.”

"Alice Hoffman: Queen of Bogue Banks" is the unbelievable historical account of a too-large-for-life woman who decides to forge her own way in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hoffman’s adventure centers around a clash of cultures, a legal battle in a small Southern courthouse, and a decades’ long contention between two completely different societies: Hoffman’s high society of New York and the fishing communities of Bogue Banks, North Carolina. - How did a New York City socialite drastically change a small NC fishing village? - Why did a small Eastern North Carolina county sue President Theodore Roosevelt’s grandchildren? - How long does it take to lose freedom and a way of life? And what happens when it is lost? Kathleen Guthrie has uncovered a can’t-miss story for the ages and collected it in a well-researched account of a true American original.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Scholary, Well Researched, Informative By William D. Hooper A scholarly book, well researched and written. A story of a clash of cultures - of "gown" versus "village". A book with a larger message about what happens when divergent cultures clash and fail to find common ground. And finally, a work that gives perspective on the need for better preservation of the NC coastal environment. Specifically, on how a 21 mile long North Carolina barrier island was transformed from its near pristine state in the 1920's to the very densely summer beach haven it is today.
