Belmonte This is a magnificent two-volume history by historian Alexander F. Barnes. From the Mexican Expedition to the occupation of Germany, the books cover many aspects of the Army (and, to some extent, the Marines) wartime service. To be clear, these books are not a history of the operations of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF); he does not include in-depth histories of the battles and campaigns. Those topics are nicely covered elsewhere; what he does, though, is give us a wonderful overall picture of the raising and training of a military force that helped to secure victory for the allies.The books actually cover each of the 32 newly-created camps that handled the tides of draftees and volunteers throughout 1917 and 1918. I enjoyed the brief histories of each cantonment, along with mini-biographies of most of the camp and division commanders. Special sections also cover immigrant soldiers and African Americans in the AEF.Militaria collectors will love the many photos of uniforms, insignia, and equipment included. Also included are photos of various personal items and souvenirs that the soldiers owned. For me, the many photos of soldiers—postcards and snapshots sent home to loved ones—is the best part of these volumes.Al has written at least two other fine volumes on aspects of the AEF. These two volumes are a perfect addition to his work, obviously a labor of love. I highly recommend them.Peter L. Women Vietnam Veterans: Our Untold Stories, by Donna Lowery, a Vietnam veteran, chronicles the participation of American military women during the Vietnam War. This little-known group of an estimated 1,000 women from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force left its mark in Vietnam from 1962 to 1973. They served in a myriad of duties from intelligence analysts, flight controllers, clerk-typists, translators, physical therapists, dietitians and communications specialists among many others.

 

Our Untold Stories allows the women to speak for themselves about their experiences, and, for the first time ever, brings names, facts and figures together in one literary work. The purpose of the book is to be historically significant to future researchers.

 

The history of the military women in Vietnam began in 1962 with Army Major Anne Marie Doering. She was born in what became North Vietnam. Her father was a French officer, her mother a German citizen. When her father died, her mother married an American businessman. Her service in Vietnam as a Combat Intelligence Officer is a compelling story of the US military women in a war zone.

 

It was not until 1965 that the US Women’s Army Corps (WAC) sent two women as advisors to assist the newly formed Vietnam Women’s Armed Forces Corps. The following year, the Army authorized the establishment of a WAC Detachment in Vietnam. Soon, thereafter, the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy also sent women to serve in various capacities.

 

In March 1973, under the Paris Peace Accords, the last women left Vietnam along with the remaining men. The impact they had in Vietnam set the stage for the expansion and integration of women into additional roles in the military. Today, women serve in areas of active combat, demonstrating their abilities and dedication to the mission.

About the Author Sergeant Major Donna A. Lowery is originally from Eugene, Oregon. She began her military career in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in June 1965 at Fort McClellan, Alabama, followed by training in the personnel field at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. While serving at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, to her surprise, young 19-year-old SP4 Donna Lowery was selected as one of the initial group of Army enlisted women to serve in Vietnam, arriving in 1967. She served 19 months in country and counts that time as one of her most interesting assignments. In her 26 years of service, Lowery was First Sergeant of four units and served four overseas tours. In 1973, she served at Fort McClellan, Alabama as a Senior Drill Sergeant. Lowery attended Class 27 of the Sergeants Major Academy. Lowery's last assignment before retirement was the Fort Lewis, WA, G5 (Civil Affairs/Psychological Operations) SGM during Desert Storm. After her retirement from the Army, Lowery worked for the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs and in other positions. She retired from the state in 2006. Since her latest retirement, Lowery has been active in her community. She received one of the Governor's 50 Volunteer Awards for her work with the homeless in 2010. Lowery received the Washington State Outstanding Woman Veteran award for 2011. Women Vietnam Veterans: Our Untold Stories is a book project she has worked on for several years. She feels strongly that the world needs to know more about the courageous women who willingly served this country in a combat zone at a time when it was not seen as an appropriate thing to do.

Lee I am sure glad I had the pleasure to review this book before the official release and to read the acknowledgement of the courageous women, their stories, and their obvious love of country. I was taken back and intrigued...not only by the chronology or the history, but by the many, many personal stories of devotion, dedication, professionalism, tenacity, honor, and having fun in the face of adversity. Not only did these women serve. Not only did they focus on the combat mission, but they left an indelible influence on the Vietnamese people, the many children they blessed, and the value they added to the communities they served and worked in.These stories are a compelling account of women forging their way into yet another facet of the military clearly unprepared to deal with women in combat. I appreciate they are your stories and I was impressed with the consistent theme of duty and honor. The stories were NOT replete with complaints and grips, which soldiers often participate in, rather they were filled with a clear sense of dedication while always having fun in the face of adversity. By Donna Loring It is the only book of its kind that details certain aspects of the lives of those American Women who served in Vietnam. It is a tribute to those Women Warriors who served this Country at a time when women were not a part of the regular Army or other Military Services. Women were not allowed to carry weapons nor were they allowed to serve in combat. These women did serve in a combat zone called Vietnam. They were all courageous and honorable women and this book gives them a lasting place in our history that is richly deserved and will never be forgotten. Thank you Donna A. Lowery and the book team who worked with her along with former Cpt. Lady Hope and The Duke of Darkness By Rosemary Morris Lady Hope and the Duke of DarknessThe novel, Lady Hope and The Duke of Darkness, which begins in Tunbridge Wells in 1822, intrigued me with its many twists and turns until I reached the end with a sigh of satisfaction.While Hope is arranging Christmas decorations: “Consumed by impatience, she couldn’t wait for her life to begin.”Maggi Anderson has an engaging style.When Hope says that she hates the cold, her younger sister replies: ‘The French climate is warmer.’Hope comments that it seems Frenchmen are so much more.”Charity asks: “More what?”Hope replies: ‘I’m not sure what, but whatever it is, they have more of it.’When Charity questions Hope, she admits she met a Frenchman on the Continent. When he spoke to her “His voice was rich and low, as if an invitation lay beneath the words.”Thus the author has introduced the young innocent but intelligent heroine, and the Duc de Tenbre, who was raised in England after his family escaped from France during the Revolution.About to make her debut in London Society, Hope intends to marry not the French Duke, whom she had nicknamed, The Duke of Darkness, but an English Duke. Later she will find out that the Duc de Tenbre intends to restore his ancestral home and live in France. However, fate intervenes when a mission takes him back to England where is path again crosses with the Duc’s.I recommend this historical romance without reservation.

It's clean firstly and secondly the H doesn't have a mistress or any other woman on the side. The h is a lovely young woman being pressured by her family into getting married. She meets the H, a gorgeous French Duke with English ties but he is not on the marriage market as he lost a wife and son and doesn't want to open himself up to pain again. The h in the meanwhile is being courted by an austere English Duke, whom her parents are quite keen on. The H then discovers he has a half-sister whom he knew nothing about. He wants her to take her rightful place in society and introduces her to the h because she's kind and lovely. This obviously means that our main characters have more contact with each other. As I said it's a good story and well worth reading

I thought the book was well written and very informative. I knew very little about Buddhism prior to my trip, so the introductory chapters provided a very informative background.I didn’t read the book cover to cover, but looked at the history, the sites we were visiting and the symbols – it added tremendously to my visit to Bhutan, adding context and allowing for a better understanding of the sites being visited. Since most of the tourism in the country focuses around the architecture, this book was the perfect "tourist guide."Since the book is an architecture review, the buildings were grouped by "types" as opposed to geographic locations -- but the sites you are going to visit are easily located in the book. There are ample pictures and graphics which add to understanding.

She amply illustrates the use of Buddhist iconography and the influence of Buddhist history in the region to explain both the structures and their decoration. While this book doesn't have the depth of analysis and historical perspective of the work of Francoise Pommaret, Bhutan's Buddhist Architecture is a great way for anyone who is planning to or has already visited Bhutan to understand and appreciate the country's most significant buildings.

By Kindle Customer "Our Land" is an enjoyable travelogue to read, with fun and interesting bits of information about the "oldest" towns and places in each state. Some I've heard of but barely remembered until the author mentioned them again, and plus other places I'd never knew existed. Stories of early settlers, Old West characters and events, and a surprise bonus at the end.

I realized what my ancestors really endured for the sake of their country. The story was simply told, and believable.
