Billings exploded when the railroad arrived, and good food was here to stay. Montana Avenue anchored the first establishments serving oysters, chop suey and steaks. Modern comfort arrived with the Northern Hotel and never left. Locals sipped, savored and swung at the Skyline, Bella Vista, Elmo and Windmill Supper Clubs from the 1930s to the 1960s. Entrepreneurs debuted the Level 3 Tea Room, La Toque, Bruno's and New Moon Cafe. Beef still reigns at the Rex, Jake's and Bistecca at the Granary. Writer Stella Fong testifies why names like Yegen, McCormick, Schaer and Honaker have persisted throughout Billings' culinary history.

An interesting book on Billings' culinary landscape By AMdS After extensive and in depth research, the author succeeds in leading the reader on the road of discovery of the history behind the food scene in Billings Montana. The book is infused with interesting historical notes, always pertinent and never overdone, together with beautiful black and white photographs which easily trigger a wave of nostalgia in anyone of the appropriate age to remember the times...... Anyone who worked or played in Billings will enjoy this book. A great gift for friends and family of the area interested in food, history, business and innovation. Well done!

Dillard Full disclosure: My wife wrote this book, but I must say, it is a very informative retrospective into the culinary heritage of the city in which we live and prosper. Stella did an amazing amount of research, culling through the library archives, interviewing the still living and the soon to die, and yielded a potent and interesting history of food and the places it was prepared, sold, and enjoyed in the rollicking west at the turn of the century. If a Phd was offered for her efforts, it should be offered with honors, as this work is the culmination of an intense effort to tell an important story of western history and the tough folks that paved the way westward.
