David Downton is right up there with illustrators Rene Gruau and Kenneth Block! Great book for the lover of fashion illustration or the aspiring artist who wishes to study the technique of a genius! Loving this book.

Downton, in my humble opinion, is one of the most influential fashion illustrator, and once you view his work, you will understand. His work is minimal, yet so hard to replicate (I've tried believe me, I've tried), and that puts him into a league, which he deserves, all of his own. Okay, enough of the flattery. As for the book, full of illustrations, printed on a nice weighty stock, nicely oversized, and a treat to thumb through. It's a treasury of this illustrator's work.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Must-have collection of David Downton's incredibly gorgeous & artfully executed fashion illustration. By N. Wu Stunning. Captivating. Sensual. Distinctive. Stylish. Words alone can't describe David Downton's exquisite illustrations, nor the majestic muses who make up this sumptuous collection of over 150 portraits of the world's most beautiful women. Distinctive, contemporary beauties such as Dita Von Teese, Cate Blanchett and Linda Evangelista to timeless icons like Catherine Deneuve, Charlotte Rampling and Carmen Dell’Orefice grace the pages of this elegantly designed and appropriately large-format monograph.Downton is the world’s preeminent fashion illustrator for over 15 years, and recognized internationally for his work with Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Chanel, Tiffany’s New York, Harrods, Lancome & the V&A Museum. What sets his distinctive portraits apart is his ability to accurately translate the depth of beauty and soul of each of his female subjects with an economy of line deftly executed with brush, ink, pen and hints of graphite or charcoal. Every line, mark, stroke and shade of color is deliberate, while spontaneous at the same time. There’s a graphic abstraction found in his work where calculated, textural brushstrokes and the interplay between positive & negative space invite the eye to linger and explore every detail. This modern quality found in his compositions is equally embraced and uniquely executed in his own right, while thematically reminiscent of 1920’s fashion-forward illustrator, J.C. Leyendecker.Sprinkled throughout this book are his personal written recollections of working with each icon, as well as documentary style B&W photography with his subjects. It concludes with a section printed on vellum stock of his exploratory sketches. With a foreword by Christian Lacroix and an afterword by Dita Von Teese, this collection is as much a celebration of his hugely successful career, as it is a masterclass study of an art form that is matchless to conventional photography. I am grateful to have discovered his work, and anticipate more David Downton collections like this to follow, as he has no signs of slowing down as his regular Instagram feeds attest to.

PDF Ebook A History of Montenegro, by Francis Seymour Stevenson

The historical interest that attaches to Montenegro is utterly out of proportion to the space that country occupies on the surface of the earth. With the exception of the politically insignificant republics of San Marino and Andorra, and of the principalities of Monaco and Liechtenstein, it is the smallest unit in the aggregate of European states; and yet it is able to exhibit in the pages of its annals a record of persistent heroism to which not one of them can furnish a parallel. For nearly five centuries its hardy mountaineers have carried on a struggle for existence against an enemy many times superior to them in point of numbers; and, whilst the remaining Slavs of the Balkan peninsula have been compelled, during the greater part, at least, of that period to submit to an alien domination, the Montenegrins alone have succeeded in preserving intact their national independence…

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Older work By Russian Postman If you are interested in an easy read of contemporary Montenegrin history, this is NOT the book for you. This large print book is a reissue of an older edition that examines Montenegrin history from 1389-1912. The original publication date is not mentioned. As it is an older book, the style matches an earlier period with paragraphs that can literally go on for seven pages. It is well researched and scholarly, with many footnotes. For this type of work, perhaps it deserves a 4 or 5 star rating. Unfortunately, although I keep starting this book, I haven't been able to motivate myself enough to actually finish it.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A good and simple book By Rogerio de O. Souza The book offers a good and simple information about Montenegrin History, foccusing more in XIX and XX centuries. The read is easy and involve the reader. Contents are compreensive and can supply good information to the student or interested people to know about this tiny but important nation in Balcans and Europe. His participation in the Balkans Wars and in the outbreak of the First World War received a good description. I am sure this book represents a good aquisition in the European History library.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating personal journey By Kate Hulbert This book took me places I had never thought of going and I was sad to see it end. Relph gives diverse examples of personal experience like how our brains teach our hands new tricks, how our lives relate to classic characters like Chaucer's bawdy Wife of Bath, Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver, and then two Victorian women who break the bonds of societal expectation to experience life and promote change. The book ends with writer Mary Karr's experience of redemption and an American-Korean Hanukkah in California. If you like to be made to think in new ways and to examine your own life experience, this book is for you.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is to be savored . . By F. Wittmann This book is to be savored while swallowed up in your comfy armchair by the window; one hand on the page; one hand cupping your favorite brew. You may find yourself, as I did, absently staring out at the view of your life experiences between engrossing sections of the book. I'd put it down, get on with my life, and pick it up again another day, when I felt like it. Take your time. Our real personal life experiences happen over decades. Author Lyn Relph researched way back over the centuries to bring us the validation that experience is of great value in the formation of ourselves today. All right, you may already feel validated, but he brings it on with colorful, rich analysis drawn from famous characters in literature and history. I found the rhythm of the writing a bit choppy at first, but after experiencing a few chapters, I began to enjoy the wisdom extracted as well as his combination style of penmanship: that of a detail-minded research professor, and a folksy, neighborly conversationalist. Relph brings relevant life to our human past, and in this fast-paced, click-it-and-done society, bloated with technological apps - it is a great comfort, and a great experience, to kick back, relax, and read such a timely and thought-provoking work.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. MAKES YOU THINK! By Amazon Customer I never questioned the value of experience. Its worth was something I took for granted, and it never once crossed my mind that it was not always appreciated. As I read Lyn Relph's book, Our Experience, Ourselves, I wondered why I had never questioned the origin of experience--I question everything else. What a project the author undertook. Relph's book speaks for his lifetime of experience--experience of reading, studying, deciphering, unraveling, retaining, and then organizing Man's experiences, and outlining when we finally came to realize the value of each other's engagement, involvement, participation, and immersion in life, and how it expanded and propelled our knowledge. What an eye opener.

Unreadable bc the text does not fit the page, so many words are missing. Guessing what the words might be is greatly hampered by the poor english. What I could garner is the translator was talking about his family members. How they related to the saints I have no idea!

Sidelined by a potentially career-ending injury, the only thing hockey player Ryan Douglas should be thinking about is his recovery. But after sharing a near death experience with a spunky brunette, the only thing on his mind is five and a half feet of sexy sarcasm. And he’ll do whatever it takes to get her back in his bed—even if it means playing dirty.

Chloe Jacobs is done with fairytales. And men. She’s kissed her share of frogs and what’s it gotten her? Dumped by text—again. The last thing she needs is a pushy, arrogant hockey player testing her resolve. Especially one who’s sinfully good with his hands and thinks date-by-blackmail is a perfectly acceptable social convention.

Ryan wants to play games? Fine by her, but this is one faceoff he’s going to lose.

Hockey player Ryan Douglas’ career was almost ended by a serious injury and his life almost ended in a late night robbery where By Adria Reyes * A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for the purpose of an honest review.Hockey player Ryan Douglas’ career was almost ended by a serious injury and his life almost ended in a late night robbery where he met a feisty albeit tiny woman who gave as good as she got. A one night stand later and Ryan can’t forget about the pint sized woman who didn’t let him get away with anything.Once Upon a Power Play had some really good moments and some really funny ones. I liked the plot, I liked the chemistry between Ryan and Chloe and the way they seemed to dance around one another when their sex-only relationship started to drift towards more serious territory. These two characters challenged each other in almost every way and it made them better and it made their relationship more fun and engaging to me. I certainly don’t like an over the top lovey dovey, sappy romance and this was no sap. It was sexy, it was dirty and it was entertaining as heck!Chloe was a badass, taking charge when she needed to and when she figured out what game Ryan was playing she was in 100% willing and able to meet him head on and drive him just as crazy as he was driving her. She may have started out a magnet for losers and idiotic pick up lines but she ended up a woman who could stand up to an alpha male and give him a run for his money.Ryan wasn't a typical jock. He was a smart guy who knew what he wanted and when he found himself falling for Chloe he was in it to win it! I loved his humor and his ways of letting Chloe know she was special to him. Athletes normally don't do it for me, but I think I can make an exception for Ryan.My only complaint was that Chloe sometimes acted, thought and spoke like a modern day teenager and while that might be age appropriate for a 25 year old character, it doesn’t make for a good image of a mature, independent woman.Final Verdict: Once Upon a Power Play didn’t take long to read because the story flows easily and best of all it was fun! Any yay for short girls too!

Review for Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer Bonds By Alyssa ***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog***Once Upon a Power Play by Jennifer BondsBook Two of the Risky Business seriesPublisher: BrazenPublication Date: November 16, 2015Rating: 5 starsSource: eARC from NetGalley***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers***Summary (from Goodreads):He'll do whatever it takes to get her against the boards…Sidelined by a potentially career-ending injury, the only thing hockey player Ryan Douglas should be thinking about is recovery. But after sharing a near death experience and a night of passion with a spunky brunette, the only thing on his mind is five and a half feet of sexy sarcasm. And he'll do whatever it takes to get her back in his bed--even if it means playing dirty.Chloe Jacobs is done with fairytales. And men. She's kissed her share of frogs and what's it gotten her? Dumped by text--again. Determined to eighty-six illusions of romance and prove she's more than just a good-time girl, the last thing she needs is a pushy, arrogant hockey player testing her resolve. Especially one who's sinfully good with his hands and thinks date-by-blackmail is a perfectly acceptable social convention.Ryan wants to play games? Fine by her, but this is one faceoff he's going to lose. What I Liked:The first book in this series, Once Upon a Dare, probably wouldn't have appealed to me, based on the synopsis. I've not read the book, but I read the synopsis, and it sounds like something I've seen before several times. THIS BOOK THOUGH. Sports romance? From Brazen? Yes, please. I am a huge sports fan - especially when it comes to hockey. Hockey players make for great male protagonists! When Chloe's date cancels on her, she knows she isn't going to waste the evening she spent preparing for the date - with her new gold dress and high heels. What she doesn't expect is to meet a sexy stranger at the nearby grocery store, who infuriates her and turns her on. Ryan is a professional hockey player, and a good one, despite his months of recovery from an injury. One steamy night leads to another which leads to another; Ryan wants to settle, but will Chloe put aside her past experiences with men and give Ryan a chance?RYAN DOUGLAS. Get ready to fan yourselves, ladies. Ryan is sexy and swoony and steamy and clever. He absolutely loves his job, the sport, and it's his life. He also enjoys bickering with Chloe, and he goes after her, and what he wants. I really like his alpha-male-ness, and his decisiveness. Underneath the teasing and the testosterone, he is a really good guy. Seriously. He's probably one of my favorite Brazen males.Chloe is very, very sassy, which is hilarious. When she and Ryan meet in the grocery, she sasses him from the start, angry at him for taking the last lime. She doesn't like being saved, she doesn't like attachments, and she doesn't like how much she wants him, but who is she to deny herself something she wants? For the most part, I liked Chloe a lot.The pair are really great together; they bicker and clash a lot, and their interactions are always hilarious or steamy. I really enjoyed the romance, outside of the chemistry. The two have serious combustible chemistry, but they also have a great connection. It takes Chloe a bit to really see that she is happy with Ryan. But they are hot together and sweet together!Like I said before, I loved the sports aspect of this book. I'm a huge sports fan, and I love hockey, so I was really pleased when so much of this book revolved around hockey. Ryan is a professional hockey player (hello, giant hot male!), and Chloe is working in the advertising of the hockey rink/stadium. Hockey is definitely a sport that should be featured in more romances, because the males are some of the hottest (beard or no beard)!Overall, I absolutely loved this book. It's definitely a Brazen favorite, which is a pretty elusive spot for me (since I read so many Brazen novels, and I usually enjoy them). What I Did Not Like:The ending is VERY happy, but I wished for a little more initiative from Chloe. That's all I'll say - I just wish it was less one-sided, things in the end. Ryan is SUCH a good guy! Chloe... well, she needed to work for the relationship like Ryan did. If you catch my drift. Anyway, I liked the ending, despite this one-sided-ness.Would I Recommend It:I soooo recommend this Brazen novel, if you're a fan of Brazen novels. Even if you're not, if you like adult contemporary romance, or adult romance in general, I recommend this one. It's a fast read despite its somewhat denseness in emotional content. This will be a go-to Brazen recommendation in the future!Rating:4.5 stars -> rounded up to 5 stars (you don't see this from me every day). I almost want to read the first book now (we do see the starring couple in this book several times), and I will definitely be looking out for future books in this series!

By DanielleLW2B After reading Once Upon a Dare by Jennifer Bonds earlier this year I couldn't wait to see what she'd come out with next while secretly hoping for Chloe's book... And Ms. Bonds did not disappoint me in that regard. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed Once Upon a Power Play, it wasn't everything I was hoping it would be.I generally have a hard time with any book when ex's are constantly mentioned or thought of and unfortunately I got really tired of hearing about Ryan's ex... That was strike one. Strike two was at the end after the big fight... How dare he let two weeks go by before the big grand gesture?! Granted, as far as grand gestures go, Ryan's was a good one... But still not enough to make me love this book.Okay, mini rant over, so I guess I should tell you what this book is all about, huh?! After getting dumped via text, Chloe decides to brave a snow storm and truck it to the store to pick up some margarita fixings and that's where she meets Ryan. Ryan comes off a as a bit of a douche in the beginning but he quickly makes up for it when he plays hero when they find themselves in some unexpected danger. There "relationship" progresses fairly quickly from there and we see some smoking hot sexy times between the two. Believe me, I had no problem feeling the lust and attraction between Ryan and Chloe, but I had a much harder time finding any connection between them other than sexual. Both were completely against making it a relationship for so much of the book and they both took so long to even admit their feelings to themselves that I had a hard time believing it when all was said and done. That being said, Once Upon a Power Play was a fairly easy read with some smoking hot sexy times and an epilogue that I absolutely loved! And even though I didn't love it as much as I had hoped I would, I'm still really excited to see what Ms. Bonds comes up with next.*ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

Based on an exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Segmented Realities compiles a group of five paintings and ten sculptural paintings by Cuban-American painter José Parlá (born 1973). Each of the works suggest fragments salvaged from urban sites that have experienced social upheaval and transformation; like his segments of walls in Havana, New York, London or the Berlin Wall, Parlá's sculptures bear witness to the waves of history inscribed on their surfaces, told in the poetic language of the city--surfaces bearing layers of marks on which ensuing generations might imagine their own manifestos and declarations of selfhood. With an essay by curator Michael Rooks, this hardcover is a gorgeous documentation of Parlá's latest project. Parlá is also known for recently completing a commissioned 90-foot mural for the lobby of One World Trade Center in New York City, a mural at the Barclays Center and also at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The Dior Bar suit is one of the most influential designs in the history of fashion. On February 12, 1947, Christian Dior presented this voluminous skirt combined with a jacket featuring a tiny waist, a pronounced bust, and enhanced hips in his first collection in the salons of 30 Avenue Montaigne. After the show, the editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar, Carmel Snow, exclaimed: “It’s quite a revolution, dear Christian! Your dresses have such a new look!” The phrase made headlines.  Dior’s New Look transformed the zeitgeist of a postwar France and heralded a storied career for his label. The New Look was an immediate sensation, and everyone wanted to wear the silhouette that Dior was later to describe as “the return to an ideal of civilized happiness.” Almost seven decades after its creation, the New Look revolution and its spirit continue to inspire the House of Dior. Published to accompany the Dior: The New Look Revolution exhibition at the Musée Christian Dior in Granville, France, this stunning volume presents a rare collection of images that illustrate the Bar suit, from the initial sketches drawn by Christian Dior to the sartorial perfection of the completed outfit, as well as the many versions it has inspired. From Yves Saint Laurent to Raf Simons, season after season, the designers of Dior have interpreted the legendary curves of the Bar suit, dreaming up bustier versions, designing it in woolen denim, or adorning it with masculine prints. With exquisite photography and insightful text surveying over sixty years of Dior’s sublime reinvention, this book is a must-have for followers and students of fashion.

Review "[Dior: The New Look Revolution], small and elegant, takes the reader through a beautifully illustrated chronology of the suit, from its 1955 appearance in the iconic photo by Willy Maywald in a Paris winter scene. Illustrations include an 1892 Manet painting of a woman equestrian in a nipped-waist ensemble, along with contemporary versions of coats and dresses that show its continuity. It’s a quiet book—and an essential reference for designers and fashion historians. The characters are likable and are fun. Yet, they are both flawed...will they find their way? This is the fourth book in the series and it's truly a standalone. I was not lost at all. I enjoyed Andy and Jackie's connection. I loved that they started as friends and they truly brought out the best in each other. While this isn't panty dropping, it's a sweet build of steam. What's even better is the author takes these two somewhat misunderstood teens and turns them into wonderful people. She shows their growth over time and how life and love can suffer, but if you chase your dreams and follow your heart, love will eventually find its way again.I'm intrigued by Michelle and would like to see what her story is. I also think I want to see Maddy and Jakes whole story unfold, so I'll probably go and read the first books.Ok, I had some difficulties with trying to find out who was talking at times. It could have been part of the formatting or it could have been the way it was written(author sent wrong file so I went back and looked at the new file, still a few places, but it's not that bad) I can overlook that and it's not a major issue for me. I also wanted a little more at the end. I felt the ending was short and rushed. But with all that, I still did enjoy the story.Evolve is a great title for this book. You are your own destiny. You make your life, your choices, your decisions determine who you are. These two were destined for each other after a simple conversation between friends opened both their hearts and minds. 3.75-4 Stars, leaning more towards 4 stars! Nicole has done a great job with this and has me intrigued.....nice job Nicole!ARC received for honest review

Keeps Getting better By Elizabeth Bennet So this is the fourth book in the series and though I received this as an ARK my oppinion is my own honest take on the story. This is Andy and Jackie's story. If youv'e followed the series the two written as side characters don't make them as likable as I found them in this book. Maddy's book you witness how shallow and adolescent Andy was and of Jackie well she is painted as a slut and an airhead. That caused me great concern when getting this to read because I like more depth to my H/h and after feeling their characters from the other books I had my doubts. All the past comes back to you as the author recaps details from the other books. That was a help because it's been a while since I read the other books and so it filled in the gaps in my memory. I have to say I liked Andy a lot better seeing inside the mystery of his thoughts and looking at Jake and Maddy from a distance I found myself disliking them. It's funny because as immature as Jake was I did find myself cheering for him and Maddy but I think if I had read this book first I may have had my doubts. Coming back to this story though I feel that ND is growing as an author learning her own voice as an author. I feel given enough time she will be able to take her characters even deeper. The story kind of just ends with you wondering what was to come with Andy and Jackie where the other couples are more settled. It is not a cliffhanger but I hope to see more of them when Michelle gets her tale. I'm not sure she will but she is the lost one of the group that has only one use for men. This book is geared towards a younger audience but I am in my 40's and still found it enjoyable. There are love scenes within the book but this time Andy and Jackie make it a true love scene and not just meaningless sex. Enjoy!!

By Grace Morales So you how you read one story and there is this couple who you just assume was meant to be and they got together easily. This is the story of THAT couple, and it shows nothing is that easy. I absolutely LOVED this book I think better than the previous ones. I am pretty sure it was because I was in love with both these characters. So Ladies first, Jackie, I can totally relate to being that age, ad having people assume they know you, and what you have done. You give off one persona in public, but your actually actions and abilities are kind of hidden. In a way it is like a defense mechanism. If someone only expects X then when I do X an mess up a little on Y no one even cares. This was her. On the outside she was the IT girl (even though she didn’t realize it) the cheerleader with it all put together at every party. On the inside she was craving love from her Mom, and trying to make good choices with her life. She is oyal to her friends and her beliefs and you just can’t go wrong there. Now lets switch to Andy, so he is the hunk with the amazing family, ad raging hormones, but underneath, learned from mistakes and is falling in love without even realizing it. He did have a past but was completely loyal with a HUGE heart I mean that birthday celebration, SWOON! How can you not wish for someone like him. I think his mom should have stepped in sooner though, I mean really it took FOREVER! I loved seeing how the other characters grew though, and a little more surrounding Chris. I still was a little annoyed at the end, I mean I was thinking a proposal, SOMETHING! And then she alluded to the “next 5 yrs” what happens in five years? Is that foreshadowing to the next book. HmmmOne click AWESOMENESS!!!

Interwoven is the thread of Rowland’s own impressions of Pompeii.

From Pompeii: The Afterlife of a Roman Town, by Ingrid D. Rowland

From Booklist Buried and preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in CE 79, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii is one of the most studied historic sites by archaeologists. Architectural scholar Rowland first became enthusiastic about Pompeii when she visited it in 1961 as a child with her parents and younger brother. The city was subjected to human as well as volcanic destruction in efforts to protect it for archaeologists and display it for tourists, becoming “a strange mix of overly packaged Disneyland and idyllic wilderness walk.” Rowland brings her “personal archaeology” to the task of exploring Pompeii as a scholar and offers a selection of visitors—artists, writers, scientists—whose lives were also changed by visiting Pompeii. Among those pondering the everyday artifacts and erotica she includes the Jesuit Athanasius, who challenged the belief that Mount Vesuvius’ eruptions were God’s wrath on human wickedness; Raphael, who found inspiration in Pompeii’s ancient drawings; and Freud, who discovered therapeutic benefit in his visit. Rowland also recounts visits by Mozart, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and Japanese crown prince Hirohito in this engaging look at the allure of an ancient city. --Vanessa Bush

Review Ingrid D. Rowland's richly learned From Pompeii" is a wonderfully well-written, funny, fascinating, and oddly poignant tour through the many afterlives of the ancient city. This is a brilliant book about the pleasures and perils of archaeology, historical preservation, and cultural tourism, stumbling over one another in a quixotic search for the traces of the dead.--Stephen Greenblatt, author of "The Swerve: How the World Became Modern"Original, highly illuminating, and fun--brimming with ideas and observations--and many surprises for those familiar with Pompeii as well as for new visitors to the Bay of Naples. This is classic Rowland!--Kenneth Lapatin, Paul J. Getty MuseumOriginal, highly illuminating, and fun brimming with ideas and observations and many surprises for those familiar with Pompeii as well as for new visitors to the Bay of Naples. This is classic Rowland!--Kenneth Lapatin, J. Paul Getty Museum"[An] engaging look at the allure of an ancient city.--Vanessa Bush"Booklist" (03/01/2014)Visitors to Pompeii have long marveled at the town s perfectly preserved scenes of Roman life, but interpretations of those scenes have varied widely over the years. Rowland writes about a selection of those visitors, some famous--like Renoir, whose painting style was influenced by the town s erotic frescoes--others less well known-- like a priest named Father Kircher, who risked the wrath of the Inquisition when he suggested that the eruption of Vesuvius was in response to gigantic cycles within the earth itself rather than God s pique at individual sinners. Each story speaks to the way in which Pompeii reveals the hopes and the desires of the individuals and of societies.--Andrea DenHoed"New Yorker" (03/04/2014)"This is a book difficult, even impossible, to summarize Rowland s enthusiasm for her subject and her knowledge of history are such that many will find interest and pleasure in dipping into it, pulling out a plum here or there.--Allan Massie"Literary Review" (03/01/2014)"[Rowland s] book is a personal, indeed highly selective, account of what many researchers, cultivated visitors, archaeologists and even urban reformers have made of the site and the modern town of Pompeii: It reads, all told, like a collection of entertaining essays. She handles her theme with an ease and authority that should please others who are fond of Campania, the Neapolitan region, an area of great beauty and equally great social and environmental problem Rowland covers a wide range of topics, including the creation of the modern town of Pompeii, the musings of tourists like Dickens and Mark Twain, and diverse aspects of Neapolitan folklore.--Dan Hofstadter "Wall Street Journal ""Elegant, witty and beautifully produced It is less a guide than an overtly aesthetic appreciation of the site and its environs, poetic in its sense of connections over time It is more the gap between individual drama and universal catastrophe, both inside Pompeii and looking on from outside, that Rowland s account so powerfully conjures up.--Emily Gowers"The Guardian" (04/12/2014)"From Pompeii" is immensely lively and thought-provoking The book is crammed with telling details and entertaining snippets.--Chloe Chard"Sunday Telegraph" (03/30/2014)"Its historical breadth and richness notwithstanding, From Pompeii" is a surprisingly intimate book. Rowland begins with her first encounter with Herculaneum as an 8-year-old with a Brownie Starmite camera From Pompeii" is thus a personal, even idiosyncratic, introduction to Pompeii in the mode of, say, the novelist E. M. Forster s Alexandria: A History and a Guide" If you have any interest in Pompeii, or in entertaining scholarship, or in Italian culture, you ll want to set aside a few evenings for this deeply engaging work of popular history.--Michael Dirda"Washington Post" (04/09/2014)"The book is an entertaining canter through two millennia of history, deeply learned without succumbing to stuffiness or superiority Rowland is a lively writer and her tale of Pompeii s rediscovery and excavation is engaging. She skillfully brings to light details of the world unearthed at Pompeii--the various styles of painting identified by art historians, the social purpose of the god Priapus--and splices these into her narrative of discovery. In the process she never loses sight of the relationship between this recovery of antiquity s physical remains and the 18th century s vibrant neo-classicism. The former clearly nourished the latter, but the story turns out to be more complicated than first thought.--Luke Slattery"Sydney Morning Herald" (04/05/2014)"[Told] in rich and fascinating detail When Rowland tells us that a visit to Pompeii can change a person s life, she is speaking from personal experience.--Tom Holland"The Spectator" (04/12/2014)"[A] lively book For Pompeii is not really frozen in time. The achievement of Rowland's book is precisely to show it at the heart of a turbulent, ever-changing region, where the landscape and people are forever caught up in transformation and drama--whether geological, political, technological or cultural. She beautifully evokes the connections between the local, the international, the spiritual and the seismic For Rowland, Pompeii is the fount from which innumerable rivulets of history flow, and her fluent and engaging writing follows them where it will This is a vivid and stimulating account of the history of a corner of the earth where there seems too much colorful humanity ever to be adequately captured in a single book. Rowland s brimming pages show there are plenty more treasures to be excavated from the fertile volcanic soil of its history.--Rebecca Langlands"Times Higher Education" (05/08/2014)"There s probably no one more qualified to have a go at this subject than Rowland She possesses unsurpassed knowledge of whatever she takes up, and this work is no exception It will delight any reader who likes the serious laced with the macabre and bizarre, the ancient with the modern We never tire of her deeply knowledgeable entertainment [A] genial, learned travelogue It s one of the pleasures of Rowland s tour that we get to meet with Pompeii s visitors over the centuries, as varied a cast of characters as might be dreamed up While this is in no sense a guidebook to Pompeii and Herculaneum, anyone planning to visit Italy s southwest coast will gain from taking Rowland s fast-paced historical tour beforehand [A] splendid book.--James M. Banner Jr."Weekly Standard" (05/26/2014)"The book is an enjoyable read that encompasses an exciting range of topics in political and social history Recommended for general readers who want to know more about a place that continues to haunt the imagination of nearly everyone who visits it.--Linda Frederiksen"Library Journal" (06/01/2014)"

She has written a handful of other books about matters of Italian history and culture, and as a Professor of Architecture at Notre Dame based in Rome she has led many student field trips to Pompeii. Indeed, it has been a focus of her interest since first visiting it as a girl in 1962.If you have read anything else by Rowland, you know that she is very learned. And that she shares that vast erudition with her reader. So it is with FROM POMPEII. There is a cornucopia of information and esoterica about Pompeii and its environs, including Naples. She, of course, begins with the explosion of Mount Vesuvius on August 24 of A.D. 79, and she takes us through the history of the place up to today, when damage to the excavated Roman town comes from a changing climate, slashed budgets, bureaucracy, corruption, and "excesses of attention and excesses of neglect". (Still, Mount Vesuvius, thought by many to be primed for another massive explosion with pyroclastic flows, remains an apocalyptic threat.)Among other things, Rowland recounts the experiences of noted visitors to Pompeii through history, including Father Athanasius Kircher ("the last man who knew everything"), a youthful Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father Leopold, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Pierre-August Renoir, and Crown Prince Hirohito. It's not all high-brow: there is a chapter on Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman making the movie "Viaggio in Italia (Journey to Italy)" in 1953, at the same time as in Naples Vittorio di Sica was filming "The Gold of Naples" starring the nineteen-year-old Sophia Loren. Rowland also discusses how Pompeii, through history, has been the inspiration for various paintings, novels, and poems (including one by Emily Dickinson). And Ingrid Rowland being Ingrid Rowland, there is plenty of arcana, much of it fascinating although potentially overwhelming in its abundance. For example, castrati: Although castration, as deliberate mutilation of the body, was under official church doctrine a sin punishable by excommunication, the church was the chief employer of castrati as singers and Naples was the epicenter of their production (in the eighteenth century, Neapolitan barbers hung out signs saying "Boys castrated here"). Another example: the Fontanelle in the Valley of the Dead, a quarry carved into the bedrock of Naples that had for centuries been used as a mass grave (such as for victims of the plague), and eventually the source for a widespread cult among lower class Neapolitans who built shrines and otherwise lavished affection and attention on individual skulls plucked from the cemetery's stacks of skulls. A third example (to show just how far-ranging Rowland's scholarship can go): John Surratt, one of John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirators in the plot against Abraham Lincoln, escaped the United States to fight for Pope Pius IX in his campaign to keep Rome from being incorporated into a united Italian nation-state.For the most part Rowland's prose flows well enough, although there are occasional sentences sufficiently thorny and convoluted as to require a second reading. Often, a little too often for my liking, Rowland incorporates into her narrative passages from other writers. But my principal reservation is that, for me, the book's rampant erudition was simply too much for relaxed, wholly pleasurable reading -- which, of course, may be more a fault of mine than the book's.FROM POMPEII includes about forty duotone illustrations -- historical photos, works of art, and photographs of Pompeii and its wall paintings taken by Rowland. The very last of those photographs is of a juice vendor's stand at Pompeii, likely the same stand at which I bought lemonade that revived my wilting family on our one and only visit there on a sweltering August day in 2003. The book also contains a few minor typographical errors, more than I would expect from a publisher with the reputation of the Belknap Press.

Visiting Pompeii through the Centuries By Rob Hardy We think of Pompeii as frozen in the year 79 A.D., and maybe it was indeed inert until people started digging around the site in the eighteenth century. From then on, the place has inevitably changed, as people dug in it and restored it to their way of thinking, fantasized about it, took parts of it away, and made it fit for the thousands of visitors who came to wander its streets. It is this story that is told in _From Pompeii: The Afterlife of a Roman Town_ (Belknap/Harvard) by Ingrid D. Rowland. The author is a professor at the University of Notre Dame in Rome, and her chapters are essays on aspects of the city. Some of them are personal, like her memories of being taken to the area when she was a child (there is a picture here of her as an eight-year-old in Herculaneum, with a Brownie camera dangling from her neck) or her experiences in taking commercial tours from Rome to the region where she has conducted more serious academic tours. While the chapters are chronological, Rowland is a digressive and often witty writer, who obviously enjoys relating facts in a more informal way (nonetheless, there are plenty of footnotes). “This book presents a selection of visitors whose lives were forever altered by their experience of Pompeii, as well as a few who reacted less drastically.” While there are plenty of references to the city, its history, and its archaeology, the story of its afterlife proves to be colorful, frustrating, and funny.Pompeii’s discovery came after Herculaneum was being dug up, and by 1765 tour guides had added Pompeii to their repertoires for people coming to see the region around Naples. Much of Rowland’s book has to do with visits to Pompeii by famous people. The fifteen-year-old Mozart went in 1770, and it is often said that Mozart’s visit to the site, especially the Temple of Isis, helped inspire parts of _The Magic Flute_. But Rowland admits, “How exactly are we to recognize the reflection of an archaeological site in a musical composition?” Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s novel _The Last Days of Pompeii_ has characters say things like, “Ho, Diomed, well met! Do you sup with Glaucus to-night?” The 1867 novel, which seems to insert Victorian speech and views into the doomed city, was a bestseller, and it used to be (seriously) recommended for those who were making their first visit to view the ruins. Dickens visited in 1845, and wrote a description in _Pictures of Italy_ which movingly could describe the ruins as we see them even now. He was moved by imagining all those Pompeians wiped out by Vesuvius, but he was disturbed by the Neapolitan cult of the dead. Mark Twain visited in 1875, and in _Innocents Abroad_ wrote acerbically about the Neapolitan belief in the miraculous liquefaction of the blood of San Gennaro which helped draw money from onlookers (he’d chuckle to know that the blood is still performing this function). Like Dickens, he was more moved by the ruins of Pompeii itself, and he was inspired by the figure of the “Steadfast Soldier,” a guard whose skeleton was found in his guard-box, refusing to abandon his post just because a volcano was raging. Many other moralists at the time admired the Steadfast Soldier; there is, however, no evidence that the skeleton was any more than some unfortunate Pompeian, fleeing with all the others, who ducked under an arch, not into a guard-box, for shelter. Pierre-Auguste Renoir visited Italy in 1881 after struggling in Paris for twenty years, and was inspired by the classical paintings he saw and by the light. He admired the frescoes from Pompeii that he saw in the National Museum in Naples and on site. His paintings became brighter and more sculptural because of them. In 1994, Hillary Clinton refused to be satisfied with seeing just Herculaneum, and got into Pompeii, although her tour was abbreviated. Secret Service agents went before her room by room to make sure everything was safe, and their protectiveness extended to preventing her from entering a room in the beautiful House of the Vettii where there is a famous statue of the god Priapus with his enormous phallus. This was not going to be a photo op.In Rowland’s vivid telling, Pompeii proves to be a very lively place indeed. And still the ancient streets are alive with guides and tourists. Buying and selling and arguing go on nearby, just as they did two thousand years ago. The other constant is Mount Vesuvius, which is now overdue for an eruption, and it is quite possible that the whole place will be buried again, along with much of the the surrounding area along the Bay of Naples. The Neapolitans are skeptical about government, and there is every reason to believe that any evacuation plan, even with scientific warnings the ancient Pompeians never had, is going to leave thousands behind when the volcano blows. “There is simply no way to escape the discrepancy of scale between Vesuvius and human beings,” writes Rowland. “It is one of the reasons that Pompeii pulls so on our imagination.”

This is a Wonderful Book By David Reid I've read most of the author's other books and all of her review articles in the New York Review of Books and I've been enjoying her work for years. Having been to Pompeii several times I was eagerly awaiting this book and I was definitely not disappointed. It's beautifully written and not only exhibits her deep erudition but also her flare for making the ancient world come alive. Everyone who visits Pompeii several times comes away with a unique emotional reaction and perspective and I especially enjoyed the way she shared her own personal reaction to the site. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a taste for learning about the ancient world in a unique and highly accessible way.

George W. Bush called it "the best job in the world," yet many would argue that the Texas governorship is a weak office. Given few enumerated powers by the Texas Constitution, the governor must build a successful relationship with the state legislature—sometimes led by a powerful lieutenant governor or speaker of the opposing party—to advance his or her policy agenda. Yet despite the limitations on the office and the power of the legislative branch, many governors have had a significant impact on major aspects of Texas's public life—government, economic development, education, and insurance reform among them. How do Texas governors gain the power to govern effectively?

The Power of the Texas Governor takes a fresh look at the state's chief executives, from John Connally to George W. Bush, to discover how various governors have overcome the institutional limitations of the office. Delving into the governors' election campaigns and successes and failures in office, Brian McCall makes a convincing case that the strength of a governor's personality—in particular, his or her highly developed social skills—can translate into real political power. He shows, for example, how governors such as Ann Richards and George W. Bush forged personal relationships with individual legislators to achieve their policy goals. Filled with revealing insights and anecdotes from key players in each administration, The Power of the Texas Governor offers new perspectives on leadership and valuable lessons on the use of power.

She goes to Virginia as a mail order bride and finds a wonderful man and a lovely home but a cantankerous mother in law in need of love, and learning to forgive herself. There is of course romance, twists and turns and horrible things happening as life at the vineyard is trying to move forward. Suspicions about each other and so on. So much going on in the story I couldn't put it down. Love For His Mail-Order Bride By Debra Katie Maverick is starting a new life by traveling to Virginia and becoming the mail-order bride of Daniel O'Malley. Only Daniel doesn't know that his business partner has arranged for him a bride until Katie arrives. It takes just one look at Katie for Daniel to decide his mail order bride may be the answer to his loneliness, a wheelchair bound Mother, and help with his vineyard. Katie is a sweet compassionate person, yet Daniel is suspicious of her when bad things start happening again just like with his first wife. Will the suspicious death of his first wife, her love affair and the town believing Daniel killed her stand in the way of Daniel and Katie's happiness? This is my first American Mail-Order Bride book. Ms. McDaniel is a favorite Author of mine and her books are always well written with strong characters. I highly recommend every book by Ms. McDaniel!

Slave Narrative Six Pack 4, by Ida B. Wells Barnett, William Wells Brown, Lydia Maria Child, Mary Prince, Charles Sumner, William Still

About the Author Ida Bell Wells-Barnett (July 16, 1862 – March 25, 1931), more commonly known as Ida B. Wells, was an African-American journalist, newspaper editor, suffragist, sociologist, Georgist, and an early leader in the Civil Rights Movement. She documented lynching in the United States, showing that it was often used as a way to control or punish blacks who competed with whites, rather than being based on criminal acts by blacks, as was usually claimed by white mobs.

William Wells Brown (circa 1814 – November 6, 1884) was a prominent African-American abolitionist lecturer, novelist, playwright, and historian in the United States.

Lydia Maria Francis Child, born Lydia Maria Francis (February 11, 1802 – October 20, 1880), was an American abolitionist, women's rights activist, Native American rights activist, novelist, journalist, and opponent of American expansionism.

Mary Prince (c. 1788 - after 1833) was born in Devonshire Parish, Bermuda, to an enslaved family of African descent. While she was later living in London, her autobiography, The History of Mary Prince (1831), was the first account of the life of a black woman to be published in the United Kingdom.

Charles Sumner (January 6, 1811 – March 11, 1874) was an American politician and senator from Massachusetts. As an academic lawyer and a powerful orator, Sumner was the leader of the anti-slavery forces in Massachusetts and a leader of the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate during the American Civil War working to destroy the Confederacy, free all the slaves, and keep on good terms with Europe. During Reconstruction, he fought to minimize the power of the ex-Confederates and guarantee equal rights to the freedmen.

William Still (October 7, 1821 – July 14, 1902) was an African-American abolitionist in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, conductor on the Underground Railroad, writer, historian and civil rights activist.
