Mind-boggling Tales from the Old DominionPart of our new and growing Myths, Mysteries and Legends series, Myths, Mysteries and Legends of Virginia explores unusual phenomena, strange events, and mysteries in Virginia’s history. Each episode included in the book is a story unto itself, and the tone and style of the book is lively and easy to read for a general audience interested in Virginia history. Stories include the mystery of why the gentle giant Peter Francisco, the strongest man in the Revolution, was kidnapped as a child in his native land before being abandoned by a ship along the Appomattox River; the suspicious (or natural?) death of eighty-year-old George Wythe, a professor, patriot, and signer of the Declaration of Independence; and rumors of a vampire-caused tragedy in the Church Hill Tunnel in Richmond on October 2, 1925.

Or was his suspicion all wrong?• Tragedy struck the Church Hill Tunnel in Richmond on October 2, 1925—and rumors spread that a vampire had been disturbed. But just who was this vampire?• Was Anna Anderson Manahan of Virginia the Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia, as she claimed, or was she a Polish-born waitress—and the best actress of the twentieth century? From the Witch of Pungo to the Parkway Killer, Mysteries and Legends of Virginia pulls back the curtain on some of the region’s most fascinating and compelling stories.

Each of these, felt like pieces for a chapter. Galen's story didn't really, feel like a story! I would be willing to pay Soooo much more money for something longer, with more content.Would I recommend this series? No, but I do Love the other storylines R. E. Butler has produced! This was not for me, 15 minutes of reading, is not my idea of a good book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Closure to Selena's family was needed but good otherwise By Snowbunny1977 I did enjoy Galen's story. It was short and sweet. Not very complicated or anything. Straight forward actually not much to it. I loved the fact that his mate was a fairy. How cool was that? I do kinda wish the author did a better job at closure in regards to Selena's family? Maybe she's going to do a spin off maybe or its wishful thinking. I felt bad that her sister has to marry that other Fae. What I don't understand is that Selena has a dream that her sister gets hurt somehow from this particular Fae. Why leave it at that? We wanna know what happens but its never really talked about in detail. I think that was what was wrong with this series. It was ok for being shorts but I think we just expected more story wise. More details. You can have short stories in a series like this and still be detailed enough and we get what we want. Not all of them came together like that. I enjoyed both characters immensely. Galen was so sweet and cute. Selena was just a sweetheart. Loved her character. Just needed more.

As each ended there were characters you wanted to know more about. Now all the Sabers are mated but now I want to read about Sarena's sister and the Warnock you touched on a little more in this book. Your stories always bring me in to their world and it is hard to let go. I recommend that anyone that loves paranormal romance read your books.

It reminded me so much of Prissy's story and I loved them both, oh how I would love follow-ups of both stories! I loved that the sexual scenes were not vulgar, but refreshingly discretely done with all imagination! This was the perfect way to tell those love scenes. More authors should take lessons from you, there is no need for bold vulgar language and expressions, to me that is a turn off! So again thank you for the excellent way you told this story. And thank you so much for the gift! A friend/fan ~ Starr, RubySlippers

Lucy Preston thinks she is on her way to her destiny in Emancipation, Wyoming. Instead, she narrowly misses a date with the undertaker when a angry bull takes a strong disliking to Lucy's hat and person. Our heroine escapes with the assistance of the owner of the Pearly Gates Saloon, Sebastian Cole.Disappointed by the absence of her fiance, Charlie White, at the train depot, Lucy sets out to find him. She is shocked to find that Charlie has a new fiance, Cherry. Profoundly upset, Lucy doesn't have enough funds to make it back home (Kansas City).Lucy heads to see the only other person she knows in town -- saloon-keeper, Sebastian. It doesn't take her long to talk the man into a job as a hostess in the saloon. As added insurance, Lucy also takes a part-time job setting type at a down-on-its-luck newspaper.Readers quickly learn that Lucy has not found her niche in life. There are no boots she can miss tripping over (including her own) while carrying a tray full of beer and other spirits. If it weren't for Lucy's winning personality with his customers, Sebastian could hardly afford to keep this accident-waiting-to-happen.It's not hard to imagine how good Lucy is at setting type for the newspaper. However, Lucy's kindly boss decides to let Lucy try her hand at helping readers with problems -- in print. 'Dear Penelope' is an instant hit. But there is trouble on the horizon; Lucy's family is aware she did not marry Charlie and they are not happy she is working in a saloon.Loving her first taste of success and independence, Lucy is horrified that her family will drag her back to Kansas. She asks Sebastian to marry her for a month. And then the fun begins....

I laughed regularly while reading. Female lead is a crack up. The male lead comes across verrrrrrry appealing. He's caught in her net before he knows it! If he thinks she's a kook, wait till her family arrives!I like romances. This was written well and the storyline definitely held my attention with enough romance and good character interaction. As the storyline unraveled, I was surprised. Nice change. You usually know pretty much how it will predictably play out but this has a couple kinks you don't see coming. Read it pretty much until it was finished. Enjoyed laughing with the story and wished it was longer; hated to wrap it up and put it down.Enjoyable read and a good ride

Elberson If you're a history fan this is a terrifically unique listening experience bringing you, first-hand, into the world of wagon trains, cowboys, native Americans and the emergent Mormon church. You get a real sense of wild west towns as they really were by someone who uses a wonderful richness of language that feels somehow modern and yet very authentic.Published by the author's actual great-granddaughter.

"I am Amba." The voice rang in Devavrat's ear like a forgotten melody. ... Ancient memories from lost time veered in and out of focus. The memories came with flooding questions. How could it be Amba? What was she doing, here and now? ...I must see her. He tried to turn. The stub of an arrow, sticking under his left shoulder, made him pause with every move, however slight. Devavrat Bhishma is dying, wounded. He tells Yudhishthira the story of how the Kurus established Hastinapur as a trading outpost on the frontier of Panchnad. The river Sarasvati dried up creating a crisis for Panchnad as cities were abandoned and immigrants poured into Hastinapur looking for safety and support. The Kurus under Devavrat address the crisis with social policy. The success comes at a cost to Devavrat's personal life. Devavrat's narration becomes part of the epic poem of the Great War. The story survives, memorised as oral history by the Kavi Sangha, the guild of bards. A thousand years later, the story is written down by Vyaasa, the head of the Kavi Sangha, with help from many others. "No Indian ever hears the [epics] for the first time ... It requires great courage, therefore to re-imagine [the Great War] as the author has done. He captures the reader's attention from the start, with a sense of theatre, making the characters tangible and even more complex than in the original. ....The book ... conveys the high tension of the immediate." -- S. Anandalakshmy, Ph.D. President Bala Mandir Research Foundation Former Director Lady Irwin College, Delhi.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK By Jean Phil This is an extraordinary book. Anyone remotely familiar with the Mahabharata will be hypnotized. Together, the theme, the structure, and the style all make the book the perfect novel. In fiction, it is rather rare to find rich character studies together with a fascinating plot and a lively style, yet, this novel has all three. But the most interesting is this: the book is convincing and it sometimes read like historical fiction rather than epic fiction.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Much recommended By Always1957 I first encountered the Mahabharata from the Peter Brooks drama. Since then, I've been fascinated by the story and read everything I could about it, even though I lack knowledge of Sanskrit or even Hindi. It was that that brought me to Kamesh's talks at MIT a number of years ago. This book is not the Mahabharata, as Kamesh's mother says..if by that you mean the full-fledged story with all the supernatural miracles and wonders. This is the story as it may have really happened, with wonderful insights as to the economic and cultural situation as it may have been, and another slant on well-known and beloved characters. I read the book in one day after I got it, and am now waiting breathlessly for the other installments. It gives a clue, or a guess, if you will, as to the various cultures and peoples. These are things I had very little insight into in all my previous readings. No one at this remove could say for certain that this is the way things really were, but just the suggestion or supposition feels very valuable to me.As I say, highly recommended.

There are perfectly readable electronic versions on line for FREE!! I have a slight visual impairment, so I generally prefer electronic books so that I can adjust the size of the print. I have found in the past that these scammed (sic) Kindle editions are poorly done.

1786 October A crisp autumn day. The “river of hawks” flows above a sunlit field… Lazy smudges of smoke rise from the stone chimney of a small cabin where three young children play while their parents lay fence. The eldest sister stacks rails in the woods. She wishes she was spending the lovely day anywhere else. The cabin lies just off “The War Path,” an ancient trail soaked with the blood of Shawnee and Iroquois who once both lay claim to this land. The Iroquois are long gone, but Shawnee are plentiful, and they continue to wage the late war of their British Fathers. They raid the homes of those who encroach on their territory, or lure them to watery deaths on the Ohio River. More than 3000 settlers in the Ohio River Valley have been carried into captivity since 1783, when the war officially ended with The Treaty of Paris. The Shawnee are left on the side of the losers. For safety’s sake, the Flynn family and others have been staying at a nearby fort. But they must return to their land to build a fence, to make “an improvement” desired by the young US government through provisions of the Northwest Ordinance. This improvement makes the Flynns eligible for hundreds of additional acres. They race against the approach of winter. And Shawnee raiders. At the gobbling of wild turkeys, the Flynns halt in their tasks. A moment later, blasts from Indian rifles blow their world apart. Nothing will ever be the same.

By October 1786, The Kentucky Cornfield Laws demanded settlers improve their acreage – “clear timber, put in crops, put up cabins and put up fences. With improvements the government would add 400 acres, and John Flynne is determined to add those acres to his own.Nancy Tyrell captures Kentuckians in the years after the war. John Flynne and his family, Elizabeth his wife, Nancy, Polly, Chloe and John, the Native American Indians and the white children they adopted and integrated into their tribes, soldiers and mercenaries, the Dutch settlers, voyageurs and many others. With immense skill she weaves her characters into a colourful tapestry. Before Fallen Timbers begins when the close-knit, happy Flynne family ride through the woods to their farm where supper is soon cooking.“Nancy’s stomach grumbled at the smells from the smoky hearth – corncakes along with stew. The hot meal would be ready soon.A shot rang out.Red men filled the room.At that moment life changed forever for the Flynne family. The author of Before Fallen Timbers is to be congratulated on her research and understanding of the politics and military history, about which I knew littleThis novel is very well-written with many word pictures. “Above the river there was a chain of tall oak trees towering over it in the south and west. Hazel brush bloomed along the banks in bright October colours. There were a few cabins with pelts and bundles of other goods stacked alongside.Wings of smoke rose from outdoor cook fires and some cabin chimney.”The Flynne family’s fate tore at my heart. I agonised for Molly when, already traumatised by her father’s death she woke up in the morning in a Native American Indian Settlement and searched for her mother, younger sister and brother.“Mam, Johnny, Chloe were gone as were the Indians, who had travelled with them this far. She was truly alone with no one left to her, the thought made her sick and wild.”Polly’s hope that her sister Nancy escaped and reached the fort comes true and in due course of time, Nancy meets a Dutch family,Again the author’s descriptions excel.“Nancy was surrounded by warmth in the comforting room, large but still cosy with its decorated hatches, its ornate Frakturs and the colourful cabinets and Haussegen. The women led her around and explained.“House what?” Polly paused before some fancy script painted over the doorway.“Haussegen. That means house blessing.” Elisabetta read to her. “Der Segen Gottes Kron dies Haus. That means the blessing of God crown this house.”This is a novel in its own way as important at the much acclaimed memoirs of Laura Ingalls-Wilder, the first of which is the Little House on the Prairie, and with its depiction of a by gone age as interesting as Gone With The Wind. The reader’s five senses will be engaged as she reads this tale of the godly and ungodly, love and hate, honour and dishonour, happiness and distress besides much more.

I really became attached to her characters, and was eager to learn what would happen to each of them as time passed. She painted an authentic picture, too, of the disparity of life in the late 1700's. Economic circumstances made a huge difference in the way families experienced daily life in Kentucky in that era.I am in awe of the amount of research Jarrell must have done to create this work. It was obvious in reading that many of the events depicted actually happened. Details of the forts, the battles, the customs, and the dress of the day were well-documented.As with many self-published books, this one could have benefited from more careful proofreading. Another thing that bothered me was that the writing style seemed inconsistent throughout the book. I suspect Jarrell may have been trying to use a different voice with each character, but, if so, it didn't really work as well as it could have.

By Great Historicals Author NM Jarrell has captured her ancestry in a well researched novel that takes place during the 18th century in the aftermath of the American War of Independence. With his wife and children, John Flynne is a farmer, working hard so that he can be rewarded with an extra 400 acres in a grant by the Kentucky government. Their lives are drastically altered when a band of native people massacre the town and capture several others as slaves. What follows is a heart-wrenching tale of survival, perseverance, and the search to rescue the stolen family members. The author has delved deep into her research, garnering a strong understanding of the native people, and life in the early settlements. Steeped in historical accuracy, it is a raw tale of the hardships our pioneer forefathers endured in the creation of America. Nicely done!Thank you to the author and publisher. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In 1968, rock promoter Bill Graham launched the Fillmore East in New York City and the Fillmore West in San Francisco, changing music forever. For three years, every major rock band played the Fillmores, performing legendary shows: Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Cream, the Allman Brothers, and many more. Author John Glatt tells the story of the Fillmores through the lives of Bill Graham, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Carlos Santana, and an all-star supporting cast. Joplin opened the Fillmore East and delivered some of her greatest performances there and at its San Francisco twin. Carlos Santana grew up as a performer at the Fillmore West after being discovered by Graham on audition night. Always unpredicatable, Grace Slick’s electrifying Jefferson Airplane was the de facto resident band at both Fillmores. Chronicling the East and West Coast cultures of the late ’60s and early '70s—New York City with its speed, heroin, and the Velvet Underground versus San Francisco with the LSD-drenched Summer of Love—Glatt reveals how Graham the made it all possible . . . that is, until August 1969 when Woodstock changed everything and musicians suddenly realized their power.     But why did Bill Graham shutter both Fillmores within weeks of each other in 1971, during the height of their popularity? Live at the Fillmore East and West reveals how Graham’s claim that “The flowers wilted and the scene changed,” was not quite the whole story.

Live at the Fillmore East and West: Getting Backstage and Personal with Rock's Greatest Legends, by John Glatt

Review As a reference tool, music buffs and casual fans alike will find this volume indispensable. Glatt has spent the better part of 20 years assembling a truly staggering amount of information on a period of music that is often oversimplified as a haze of drugs and sex. Influential though those elements may have been, Glatt focuses instead on a triumphantly thorough chronicle of the business decisions and industry trends that affected the music of a generation, like Janis Joplin’s decision to split with Big Brother and the Holding Company. (Publishers Weekly)You had to be there, and . . . Glatt finds people who were behind the scenes, from secretaries and stage hands. (New York Post)Live at the Fillmore East & West is an entertaining overview of the rock scene in the late ’60s and early ’70s. . .The most fascinating part of Live is the detailed explanation of how the Fillmore East came to be born. (San Francisco Book Review)

About the Author A native of London, England, John Glatt left school at sixteen and worked in a variety of jobs – including tea boy and messenger – before joining a small weekly newspaper outside London, where he honed his keen news sense. Over the next few years he freelanced for many national English newspapers, including The Daily Express, The Sunday People, The Daily Mail and Woman Magazine. In 1981 he moved to New York, working on staff for News Limited, as well as freelancing for Newsweek, Omni, the New York Post, the Australian, Modern Business and other newspapers and magazines worldwide. His first book, Rage & Roll: Bill Graham and the Selling of Rock, was published in 1993 to critical acclaim. Two years later he wrote Lost in Hollywood: The Fast Times and Short Life of River Phoenix, a well received biography of the tragic movie star. His next book, The Chieftains: An Authorized Biography, which was published in 1997, saw him nominated for a 2000 Grammy in the spoken word category. In 1998 he wrote the well-received The Ruling House of Monaco: The Story of a Tragic Dynasty, uncovering many new revelations about the Grimaldis. In 1998 he wrote his first true crime book, For I Have Sinned: True Stories of Clergy Who Kill. A year later he followed it up with Evil Twins, an anthology of twins that kill. And since then he has written a true crime book a year, establishing him as a master of the genre. Over the years, Glatt has appeared on scores of television and radio programs all over the world, including Dateline NBC, Fox News, Current Affair, BBC World, and A&E Biography. Kaufman I was at the Fillmore East quite a lot during its hayday, and saw many of the bands at other venues as well, mostly in NY. I was lucky enough to be at some of the specific shows Glatt talked about in a way that brought me back...to those moments of music history. Glatt certainly captures the vibe, and the stories about Grace, Jerry, Phil, Jorma, Jack, Jai Johnny, Butch, Gregg, Duane, Janis and Carlos, even Jimi - you know all the last names if you're interested in real rock and roll and psychedelic music and an era - were insightful and ring pretty true, though are so good you wonder if he's making some of it up. And it isn't just about the front-men and women, but about all the musicians, Bill Graham, money, and culture, sprinkled with various substances good, bad and otherworldly. I hope all the stories and quotes ARE true because it is a fascinating look at both Bill Graham, the times and all the protagonists. If you're a fan of the Airplane, the Dead, Jimi, the Allaman Brothers, Janis, Big Brother & the Holding Co and Santana, you'll find this a page turner.

John Glatt has done a fantastic job pulling together the history of two legendary music venues and the people who played there. Packed with new information and great anecdotes. This is the book I'll be buying for all my music loving friends at Christmas.

It's on rich display in his new offering Live At Fillmore East And West. He captures the frenzy, musical rocketry, irresistible highs and lucious debauchery in this definative work. Do yourself a favor: get 2 copies, one for you and one for someone you love.

The 54th Georgia Volunteer Infantry was organized at Savannah, Georgia on May 16 1862. Co. B and Co. K (the Satilla Rifles) were formed and became a part of the 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops in October 1861. Co. B was originally designated as Co. At least I thought I did, until Killian Adair came crashing into my life. The frontman for Everything After, a hot new rock band breaking out onto the scene; Killian embodies the rock star persona. He's hot his choice of women before and after every show. Nora is a dedicated driven up and coming journalists who is going to spend 6 weeks on the road with the band Everything After as thier behind the scenes journalist's. Nora sees Killian in a compromising position before she even officially meets him and she's drawn to him. Nora has spent her whole life driven and focused on her goals. She hadn't ever experienced life she's just existing. Killian lives life to the fullest but doesnt allow emotions to influence him. He's also drawn to Nora but doesn't know how to handle it. These two almost seemed doomed from the beginning. They are both stubborn characters who don't know how to express their feelings. There were lots of times I wanted to smack the both of them and yell wake up. Melissa Toppen does a great job with the dual POV's so the reader knows Killian and Nora's feelings and thoughts. Can these two get over thier own hang ups to allow a chance at love? There's so much love and passion between these two but they are both lacking the ability to express it to each other. Melissa Toppen takes her readers on a behind the scenes road trip of a rock star band showing the dynamics among band mates, thier lovers, and the fans. If you love a rock star who is slightly damaged and a innocent driven journalist then this story is for you

I have only had a few books that have woke me up out of a dead sleep, calling my name to read them. In this is one Melissa Toppen writes so smoothly in this book, that it has you see everything going on, in your head. Her characters Nora and Killian were so opposites. Nora is a journalist just starting out and this is her big break. She is going on tour with a rock band. Killian is the lead singer of this rock band. The way Melissa has written this you see the concerts and can feel the music. While reading this I was rooting for both Nora and Killian. But not just rooting for them to be together but more for the persons they were becoming. Melissa Toppen if I could I would give this 6 STARS!!!!!! Because I love this story.

I think I was almost as excited as Nora when I found out she was getting the opportunity of a lifetime, an assignment touring with the rock band Everything After. I knew if she was going, I was going too...squeee! I knew it would be a tight squeeze sharing that tiny bunk and the tour bus, but I couldn't wait to meet those sexy rockers. The fact that Nora was an uptight, conservative, control freak with OCD issues just made it that much more interesting. I couldn't wait to see what the influence a group of rowdy rockers would have on her. Would she let her hair down? Would she learn to let loose? Could she let go of her control issues long enough to enjoy the experience? Would she be able to get the rockers to open up to her and be honest when she interviewed them? Do they wear boxers, briefs, or go commando? What? Isn't that one of the questions you want to know?Killian is the lead singer. He's the stereotypical rocker whore. Did I mention that he has a swoon-worthy Irish accent to go with his soul stirring lyrics and and his deep blue eyes? And then there's the tattoos that compete with his sexy smirk so that no matter where you look you're gonna end up with some eye-candy...sigh. Can you imagine being on a bus with that hot piece of rocker?I give her credit. Nora tried really, really, really hard to not be attracted to Killian. She knew that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at the job of her dreams was not worth risking for a little rocker romance, but damn, he was hot. But no worries, she didn't have to let him know she felt that way, right? I guess maybe she should have whispered a little softer when she shared with her BFF that he was the hottest of the band members. Who knew anyone could hear her private phone conversation? I probably should have warned her, but I was busy, mentally peeking into the bunk below, where the hottest rocker was laying...shirtless.Wait till you meet the rest of the gang. You're gonna love them as much as I did. The bus was full of their non-stop joking and playful banter. I haven't heard mention of whether this is going to be part of a series or not, but I hope it is. I kinda fell in love with Gabe too and I'd like to see the woman that could tame him. Speaking of tame...this is not the typical sex, drugs, and rock n' roll that I'm used to reading. It's more like R-rated, rather than some of the dirtier erotic rocker romances I've read. Just giving a heads-up to some of my fellow smut lovers, letting you know that it's a little cleaner, but still full of goodness.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fast-paced and gut-wrenching By Marianne M. “She’s just code…”… Well, is she? #1001 is different, but can we truly manufacture souls like we can manufacture lifelike, synthetic bodies that mimic human behavior? Caleb and the synth girl who used to be Hailey Hung are about to find out.Pippa Dacosta once again proves her power over her pen (or is it keybord these days?) in the third installment of “Girl from Above: Trapped.” Expect political intrigue, deceit, an artificial intelligence that ponders her own significance and a delicious mix of budding romance, adventure and friendship in this extraordinary novel that I inhaled in a few days.Caleb and 1001 are on the run from… Well, pretty much everybody, really. From the powerful Candes family for the death of their sister. From the Fenrir Nine, because Caleb has refused to turn over 1001 to them. Meanwhile, Chitec will stop at nothing to secure her secrets. The same secrets that riddle 1001’s (or One, as Caleb has started calling her) mind. Slowly, just as One is starting to really experience what it means to live, to like… to love, her synthetic mind is slowly failing, and is now threatening her very existence. Worst of all; someone she believed to be her ally, might not have One’s best interests at heart after all. Is Hailey Hung’s tragic life story about to repeat itself?#DESIGNATION NOT FOUNDExpect heartwrenching twists and turns in the third installment of Girl from Above as the Chitec organization begins to tighten the noose, not only around the renegades aboard Starscream, but the people in the nine systems as well. Before the books comes to an end they will have known bitter betrayal, someone will have paid the ultimate prize, while others are fighting not only for their continued existence, but their very soul."She’s real and you’re manufactured. Her life will always be worth more than yours”"Stars are wishes and wishes are dreams. I have dreams too. Do they mean nothing? "I’ve always been fond of this little quote by Nicolas Cage: “The best characters are the ones that somehow manage to be both attractive and repulsive at the same time. If you do that, you're at the center of the universe - if you can find characters who are more ambiguous and can raise more questions than answers.”I suspect that’s why I’m in love with all of Pippa’s books. There are no clear-cut heroes in Girl From Above. They’ve all made horrible mistakes, but I hope – and believe – that they are moving towards the better versions of themselves in the final installment of the series, which – unfortunately – isn’t due until next year. And why do I say unfortunately? Well there is the small matter of the cliffhanger of galactic proportions where the fate of the nine systems as well as one synthetic soul hangs in the balance. So bewarned, people, you will be left hanging. All in all, this book proves yet again why Pippa Dacosta has become one of my favorite authors, my only "complaint" is that I wish each installment had been longer. (I blame it on my Akil worship; another one of Pippa’s wonderful creations, who’s a pro in the greed department.)Overall rating: 4.5 stars.*I was given an eArc in exchange for an honest review.*

Caleb is the very definition of an anti hero but there is a small part you just have to love about him. 1001 or One is becoming more human but something is wrong and the good doctor can't fix her this time. This is the second to last book and I see where Caleb is changing, becoming who he should be and One is the girl to help him. We meet some past characters and some things are revealed that explain a lot. I can't wait for the finale!!!* I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review *

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Heart racing thriller. By Megan Starkweather Thank you Pippa for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.Caleb is finally learning that sometimes he has to look out for others and not just himself. His heart grows bigger just in time to lose One again. I'm still too curious to not be excited for the next book already and it hasn't even been released. There is too much unfinished business. I loved it. Some questions have been answered and others have brought more. Plenty if emotional moments, with thrilling chases and killer fights. I expected nothing else.

The king who was the present Queen's grandfather, and hoped that one day she'd inherit the throne For a man with such conventional tastes and views, George V had a revolutionary impact. Almost despite himself he marked a decisive break with his flamboyant predecessor Edward VII, inventing the modern monarchy, with its emphasis on frequent public appearances, family values, and duty. George V was an effective war-leader and inventor of "the House of Windsor." In an era of ever greater media coverage--frequently filmed and initiating the British Empire Christmas broadcast--George became for 25 years a universally recognized figure. He was also the only British monarch to take his role as Emperor of India seriously. While his great rivals (Tsar Nicolas and Kaiser Wilhelm) ended their reigns in catastrophe, he plodded on. David Cannadine's sparkling account of his reign could not be more enjoyable, a masterclass in how to write about Monarchy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A King who upheld "character" and "family values" By Susman Thomas Penn and a number of his colleagues have embarked on a venture to publish a short series of profiles of England's and eventually Britain's Monarchs. The aim being that the reader will think afresh about the Monarchs - their place in history and the continued significance of this national institution. The author David Cannadine is a British historian and has written a number of books, on the British Aristocracy. He is also a prominent commentator on British public life, specifically the monarchy.George V personified thoroughness and duty and wanted to represent his subjects, rather than prescribe government dogma, contrary to his precursor Royals Victoria and Edward. His reign began amid the continuing constitutional crisis over the House of Lords, which refused to pass a Parliament Bill limiting its powers. When the First World War broke out the King pressed for appropriate handling of German prisoners-of-war and he pressed for more caring dealing of conscientious objectors. Mid-way through the war there was the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, and subsequent civil war, resulted in the setting up of the Irish Free State (later to become the Irish Republic) in 1922, while the six northern counties remained part of the United Kingdom. George played a conciliatory role on this, and on other occasions, such as the General Strike of 1926.This book is a good academic account that is very readable and a good primer on the subject. The book has good attention to detail, which is probably aimed at the younger reader - but not exclusively so. This is a small hardback book with around a 100 pages of the main text in small font sized print. The cover dust jacket covers the centre half of the book, which makes it, look rather fetching. It has a number of lavish colour plates at centre of the book, it's appealingly bound edition and the paper is of good quality. There is a useful section of notes as well as guide for further reading. The book is written in a clear and concise manner and can be considered a good primer on the subject of George V, whose reign saw many key changes in social political and domestic landscape of the British Isles from the beginning of the twentieth century. This is a Monarch, who due to the premature death of his brother, had to take the mantle of Kingship.

She's looking for a job, not a mate ... but fate has other ideas. Loretta Franklin hasn't paid much attention to Draconians, the dragon shifter aliens who've come to Earth looking for human mates. She's been too busy getting her MBA so she can take care of her grandmother and younger siblings. But when she comes to NYC from Alabama for an interview, anti-Draconian terrorists attack the building she's in. They want the dragon shifters to leave forever, and they don't care who they kill. Fortunately for Loretta, Draconian commandos come to the rescue. And their leader, General Mylash Shin, might be intimidating--but he's also the sexiest male, human or alien, she's ever encountered. Mylash is certain the curvy human is his mate, and urges her to take the DNA test to prove it. Loretta finds the seven-foot-tall warrior hard to resist ... but she doesn't want to leave her planet and her family. Can the general win his most important campaign ever, and persuade Loretta that he's worth it?

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Loving the alien By dora la exploradora This is the second book in the series and the only one I had read. Now, I’m willing to get the first one. It kept my attention all the time with the good narrations and dialogs making me read it non- stop until the end. This is a futuristic world psi-fiction book that made my imagination flow with good images. Loretta Franklin was looking for a job in New York City. Her grandmother had been taking care of her sister and brother and now was time for her to take charge. While she was leaving the building, after the job interview, a bomb exploded. The Human Liberation Coalition group was attacking and demanding that the Draconian leave the planet or the terrorist would kill fertile women. She was a fertile woman and fearing being hurt she was hiding when Draconian General Mylash, found her. Mylash was attracted to the human woman and felt the pull of a mate immediately. He never thought he would find his true mate and had been ready to be without a mate for all his life. Loretta was not part of the lottery to match human women with draconians. With the struggle with the terrorist and the war ahead would she accept him as her mate? How could he win her? Loretta’s doubts made her struggle against her feelings. She was feeling the attraction toward the alien warrior but they were different species and she feared she would have to leave her world behind. How they were going to deal with this? The book was very entertaining with a mating between different species being the male protagonist a dragon shifter from outer space. I was touched by Mylash pursue of his mate’s acceptance. He was a very good character. It had a good pace with suspense, strange romance and action with the terrorist group and lots of hot sex. Liked the story development and the character’s chemistry. Received the ARC for an honest review.

Mylash is sent down to take care of things. never before had the dragons shown their real power to humans but now they were wanting to kill their own females so dragons couldn't mate them. it kind of forced the issue. Mylash is taken by surprise when he finds a single young female huddled in a corner, not sure what to make of it initially, he's quickly realizing his dragon had other plans with this particular female!how is he going to convince her that they're meant to be? the only good thing is, she wasn't in the available group so he can hide her while they make their mind up!a lovely read. Mylash is upfront and doesn't beat around bush about what he wants and what he wants is Loretta, only Loretta isn't so meek and willing as he'd like her to be.shifters from outer space, i like the twist given in this story about the how and the why. a fresh look on things makes for a wonderful story!free copy given in exchange for an honest review

Ok, this is book 2 and I liked the first book better and it got a 3 star rating. This read a little too much like the first book. Except some things have changed of course and characters were different. I did feel the familiarity though when reading it. No new information...not really. Female character Loretta was just too easy to sway! I mean she did panic briefly but that was over. They mated but not fully and she panics again. Wishy washy. Mylash didnt even want a mate at first til he saw her. Its hard to go with the flow with such characters! He's all gruff at first and does a complete 180 after meeting Loretta. He softens too fast for me. Just seems unbelievable considering the same guy says leave humans to their stupidity a few hours earlier. I dunno I am just not digging the series that much. Maybe if the characters were written better and seeing how its a different couple in each book that the stories are different but so far its more of the same. I've read a lot of sci-fi short romance stories in a series also but they do differ quite a bit. These are just too similar. I really wanted to like the story...really bad because the blurb was really interesting but fell short of expectations. I have 2 more stories in this series to read and I sincerely hope they are better.
