Since 1819 over 3,000 souls found their personal ''eternity at the end of a rope'' in Texas. Some earned their way. Others were the victim of mistaken identity, or an act of vigilante justice. Deserved or not, when the hangman's knot is pulled up tight and the black cap snugged down over your head it is too late to plead your case. This remarkable story begins in 1819 with the first legal hanging in Texas. By 1835 accounts of lynching dotted the records. Although by 1923 legal execution by hanging was discontinued in favor of the electric chair, vigilante justice remained a favorite pastime for some. The accounts of violence are numbing. The cultural and racial implications are profound, and offer a far more accurate, unbiased insight into the tally of African-American and Hispanic victims of mob violence in the Lone Star State than has ever been presented. Many of these deeds were nothing short of morbid theater, worthy of another era. This book is backed up by years of research and thousands of primary source documents.

A remarkable and fascinating book By Wild Bull Writer For those of us raised watching movie and TV westerns, a lynching seems like a natural and inevitable part of early frontier justice. But those dramatic presentations were carefully sanitized compared to the brutality of an actual lynching carried out by a crazed, raging mob, or by a group of ordinary people set on seeing “justice” done with earnest immediacy (much less a lynching carried out as entertainment for an entire family with a picnic lunch packed for the occasion). So it fascinating to learn from this remarkable book, Eternity at the End of a Rope, how many different ways and under what a variety of circumstances people were actually lynched in Texas between 1819 and 1923 (though the book does include about 20 lynchings that occurred after 1923). For one thing, one learns that a lynching was often more complicated than hanging a man (or woman) by a rope. Many lynchings included a variety of other punishments: shooting, dragging behind a horse or vehicle (either before or after the hanging), and burning the body. One thing is certain: This book required an extraordinary amount of research over a period of years, for which the authors must be admired. The result is a book that other historians will use as a research tool and resource. But it also a book that the layperson will read in stints to get a closer look at how people behaved in the alleged cause of justice before lynching was stopped altogether.Of the almost 3,000 persons lynched in Texas during the period cited, it is unfortunately no surprise to learn a disproportionate number of them were African-Americans and Mexican-Americans. A black man was four times as likely to be hanged as a white man. (This number was even greater in some southern states like Georgia.) That said, white men were lynched in about a third of the Texas cases documented.A reader will doubtless come away from Eternity at the End of a Rope having gleaned a look at history from a very different angle than what is taught in schools. For one, the first person lynched in Texas was a pirate hung by other pirates on Galveston Island in 1819. And the last known lynching occurred in 1942 near Texarkana, the victim being a black man accused of attempted outrage (rape) of a white woman. The lynchings in the book are listed in alphabetical order. Some have little information other than when the event took place. Others have stories in greater detail, and those are the ones you will read with fascination and wonder. On the whole, the subject of the book is one many people manage to avoid because it is… well, it’s an unpleasant commentary on human beings and our clumsy attempts at civilization and justice. And for that reason, the authors deserve our gratitude for the courage and persistence it took to bring this honest book into being.

A great reference and research book By Terry Baker The book holds vital information needed for anyone researching early Texas law enforcement and "Justice by the Rope." Covered are hangings after a trial and conviction. It also covers lynchings by mobs and vigilantes. Over 3000 cases are documented from 1819 - 1923. Along with the stories are the names, dates and counties in most of the cases. This book is a must for every library in Texas and anyone interested in Texas history.

The authors have decades of research available in one volume, and both are sticklers for detail. I highly recommend this book as an invaluable reference--well done!
