About the Author Brooks, Thomas (1608-1680). "Nonconformist preacher. Born into a Puritan family, he was sent to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He soon became an advocate of the Congregational way and served as a chaplain in the Civil War. In 1648 he accepted the rectory of St. Margaret's, New Fish Street, London, but only after making his Congregational principles clear to the vestry. On several occasions he preached before Parliament. He was ejected in 1660 and remained in London as a Nonconformist preacher. Government spies reported that he preached at Tower Wharf and in Moorfields. During the Great Plague and Great Fire he worked in London, and in 1672 was granted a license to preach in Lime Street. He wrote over a dozen books, most of which are devotional in character. He was buried in Bunhill Fields."

And yet, Christians, it is mercy, it is rich mercy, that every affliction is not an execution, that every correction is not a damnation....Afflictions are a golden key by which the Lord opens the rich treasure of his word to his people's souls...Meditation is a soul-fattening duty; it is a grace-strengthening duty, it is a duty-crowning duty."Brooks begins his treatise by proposing a Doctrine--"That it is the great duty and concernment of gracious souls to be mute and silent under the greatest afflictions, the saddest providences, and sharpest trials that they meet with in this world." A Selected quote adds to our understanding of his proposed Doctrine--"If God's hand be not seen in the affliction, the heart will do nothing but fret and rage under affliction." Brooks also enumerates and responds to ten different Objections to this Doctrine and follows with "helps and directions that may contribute to the silencing and stilling of your souls under the greatest afflictions, the sharpest trials, and the saddest providences that you meet with in this world."

But it is a book filled with much practical wisdom, depth, and encouragement for a Christian believer that is facing hard times. The basic thesis of the book is that whining is not a useful or helpful approach when hard times hit. But in place of that, Thomas Brooks gives a number of solid Scriptural principles for the believer to consider and to apply to his troubling situation. Brooks points to the faithfulness and care of God for the Christian, pointing out that hard times are not an accident and are not a sign that God has forgotten him. This book is not light reading and should be read very slowly and carefully. That does not mean that it is hard to understand, simply that it is so deep and meaty that one should not rush through it or gloss over what is being said.
