About the Author Michael Deibert is the author of the Democratic Republic of Congo: Between Hope and Despair. Michael’s writing has appeared in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, the Miami Herald, Le Monde diplomatique, Folha de São Paulo, the World Policy Journal, and the Huffington Post, among other venues. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant, Harrowing, Essential Reading By markymark By far the most immediate and gut-wrenching read on the drug war I've encountered. So much is packed into the author's account of the story behind the Gulf Cartel v. Zeta that the reader is plunged into the world, unapologetically. I couldn't recommend this more highly for anyone interested or just curious in what is going on right on the other side of our border.

Pattis The reporting is first-rate, but the story gets lost in the details and only really emerges as almost an afterthought in the epilogue. One hundred thousand people have been either killed or went missing in the past eight years. Why? The war on drugs. Responding to American pressure, Mexico's military decided to get tough on drug cartels. The result has been a civil war, pitting the cartels against one another, the government against the cartels, and the government and cartels against civil society. Mexico is a short step from the state of nature.Deibert narrates an overwhelmingly depressing tale of death and destruction. Chapter after chapter lists those killed, those believed responsible, the locations of mass murders, the number of those decapitated. I was disturbed by reading this, and was tempted to put the book down from time to time. So many names; so much mayhem. I wanted to know what it meant. Deibert seemed content simply to chronicle that it occurred. But I could not put the book down. It is too well and reliably reported.I wish a better editor had worked the book over before publication. Mind-numbing details reflect reliable research, but the book meanders in the dark, counting trees and losing site of the forest.Read this book if you want a snap shot of a failed state. It's terrifying. I had the sense reading it that I was looking at the future -- our future.

By Laura Shafferman I have been an avid reader of books on the cartels of Mexico and Colombia but have not found anything with such thorough and thoughtful research as this. The book presents the facts with journalistic integrity but also in a highly readable manner that is engaging to someone not familiar with the subject. I would even venture to say you needn't have any prior knowledge on the topic to completely enjoy it.
