There are plenty of books and movies about what different soldiers experienced in war - but few grind out the details of why they do it. Sons of the Flag brings together the veterans from each of the American wars from WWII to the present and the veteran firefighters of 9/11 who served during the greatest attack on American soil. Each contributor tells precisely why they do what they do - putting country and brotherhood before their own safety. Weaving their chapters together, author Ryan "Birdman" Parrott, an American veteran, shares the journey that led from being a self-described screw-up to becoming the visionary and leader of Sons of the Flag, an organization dedicated to burn survivors. The contributors associate key moments in their lives that impacted them forever in putting their brothers to the right and left before themselves. Parrott asks readers to imagine a country where all citizens were as dedicated as these men in serving their fellow Americans.

By Dallas Sub Sailor A friend of mine here in Dallas was actually one of men featured in the book, a true Korean War hero and well depicted by the author. Overall, I thought the book was o.k., but "Korean War Heroes" was a better read or at least I thought so. On the other hand, if you have never served it is good to get a believable account of what some our heroes endure for their fellow countrymen. It is relatively short book and an easy to read. Most of us who served in the armed servies, especially during the Cold War, had much more mundane experiences than these select individual. Speaking personally, I served in the nuclear Navy, i.e., the submarine service back in the mid 1960s. I am glad that I did it and I am proud of my service, but our job was to watch, wait and be ready to retaliate in force if the need ever arose. For the most part boredom and tedium was our biggest enemy Thankfully, we never had to launch our missiles or fire a torpedo in anger. If we had, it would certainly be a much sadder world today.I don't know what percent of the men and women that serve today ultimately find themselves in harm's way, but it really doesn't matter. When you are on active duty, you go where you are told to go and when you are there you do what you are told to do to the best of your ability. It may or may not involve mortal danger. It is all service to our county, but some service is a lot more harrowing and demanding than others.

Leadership Starts With Attitude By Reid Berryman Reading Sons of The Flag from the civilian perspective serves as a reminder to the thoughtfully tuned attitudes and visionaries that emerge from our service men and women. The author pays homage to those servicing the U.S. in many ways beyond military roles. Selfless leadership and personal discipline are qualities all the heroes highlighted in this book represent.Historical accounts of past heroes that may have otherwise gone uncaptured were well-preserved with their emotion. The personality of each hero is well communicated and Ryan's personal stories reflect the common string that binds all of these servicemen, a commitment to the team. The accounts provided are the detailed realities that transpired. Ryan includes his own fears, challenges, and concerns that inspire us not to just move forward in life but to advance with character and integrity. We are all part of teams that come and go, some we fall into, others we strive to join, and few we have the opportunity to lead. This book reminds us that independent of our role, our deeper commitment is always to take care of those around us.

And despite a small assemblage of morally bankrupt derelicts that take from this country, who have a sense of entitlement or those ignorant few that express themselves by stomping on the American flag, the large majority of Americans are good!Sons of The Flag reveals just a few of the warriors and first responders that keep this country safe and the tried souls that hold honor and brotherhood to the highest degree. It affirms a lineage of good men in this great nation who aren’t afraid to give their last full measure for their country and fellow brothers, Americas faithful "Sons of The Flag". If every American, man woman and child would read this book, there would be no doubt in this patriot’s mind that those American men and woman would lead a more virtuous, humble and grateful life.
