With more than 500 new apps entering the market every day, what does it take to build a successful digital product? You can greatly reduce your risk of failure with design sprints, a process that enables your team to prototype and test a digital product idea within a week. This practical guide shows you exactly what a design sprint involves and how you can incorporate the process into your organization.

Design sprints not only let you test digital product ideas before you pour too many resources into a project, they also help everyone get on board—whether they’re team members, decision makers, or potential users. You’ll know within days whether a particular product idea is worth pursuing.

Design sprints enable you to:

  • Clarify the problem at hand, and identify the needs of potential users
  • Explore solutions through brainstorming and sketching exercises
  • Distill your ideas into one or two solutions that you can test
  • Prototype your solution and bring it to life
  • Test the prototype with people who would use it

However it is probably one of the first one I’ve read that thoroughly outlines “How” to do it.The book contains several chapters that do tout, what a design sprint but these are minimal. Also the book has a lot of pictures of design sprints in action, the post-it notes, huddling around tables and such. They are all appropriately placed so you get a sense of what is going on in each section. The book is also well designed and the overall design of the book is well considered, with the pictures interspersing the text and graphical representations of the concepts as well. What I like about this book was, the prose filled in the story and at the end of each chapter was a takeaway for that chapter. Sometimes it is nice to page back and review a concept.I also like the primer on how to peel post-its so they don’t curl… There are a lot of practical and alternative methods noted within. It is hard to say how effective this book is until it is put in practice. I know I will be referring to it for some direction as we are trying to use this method of design in our organization. Unfortunately with any new “method”, you get out of it, what you put into it. If you don’t do the checks and balances, you end up with “same old, same old”. But if you do follow the practice you have a real chance of effective change.Key, to me is the definition of what problem you are trying to solve for the user and then the resultant testing, to see if you have created something that addresses your fundamental design question, or at least provided a feature people want. Without that it is change for change’s sake. This book seems to be leading you to do the right things at the right time, if followed.FORWARD****Why care about design sprintsPREFACE****The objectives of this book****Who this book is for: The product professional****We wrote this book using a design sprint****How this book is organized****AcknowledgementsTHE WHAT, WHY, WHEN AND HOW OF DESIGN SPRINTS****Chapter 1: What is a design sprint****Chapter 2: When (and when not to) do a design sprint****Chapter 3: How to approach design sprints****Chapter 4: Before the design sprints, make a plan****Chapter 5: Phase 1: Understand****Chapter 6: Phase 2: Diverge****Chapter 7: Phase 3: Converge****Chapter 8: Phase 4: Prototype****Chapter 9: Phase 5: Test****Chapter 10: After the design sprint: Capture, Iterate and Continue****Index

By p.esteves Whether you have ample experience in design thinking methodology or you are about to embark on your first product/service design process, this book will be helpful. And while it won't explore or explain concepts and principles, it provides an effective "How to" methodology and step-by-step approach to lead a design process with your teams or clients. From simple pro tips like stocking up supplies and preparing the "sprint kits", to enticing ideas and exercises to effective brainstorming, prototyping, and testing, this book is full of proven tools.I particularly liked the flexibility it provides to design your own design sprint. The authors did a great job in recommending different formats and durations, pitfalls and common mistakes to avoid, and a "toolbox" approach: you pick the right tools for the job from all the options they document very thoroughly. Despite the book's title, me and my team used some of the exercises and recommendations to drive non-digital innovation processes.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. UX / UI version of a (programming) sprint By Someone What's a sprint in the development world? It's basically focusing on accomplishing a specific piece of work within one to three weeks? The main difference between a design sprint and the traditional programming sprint are really small details where the latter focuses on implementing logic and actual functionality while the other focuses more on usability specifically why we need specific functionality and how it should work for the end user.[Good]This book gives you the framework for implementing this sprint in your team and company (i.e. managing the process) which is basically 1. analyze the problem 2. implement 3. test 4. analyze the delivered solution[Bad]This book isn't going to teach you basic design principles. There are other books for that.

This is Shanghai is a first hand account of expat life in China's (and the world's) largest city. Like a guidebook, it helps newcomers and visitors discover the city; but instead of making quickly-outdated lists of restaurants and museums, Alexander Barrett takes you on a tour of the essential facets of existence in Shanghai. Follow him through the sometimes incredibly old, sometimes futuristic, and often just plain strange sights, sounds, and experiences he's come across in the first year of exploring the city. With its light, humorous style and sharp eye for those key details that explain the sprawling reality of a huge metropolis, this book is perfect for anyone who wants a friendly guide to Shanghai or just a window onto another, fascinating world.

When it comes to food, there has never been another city quite like New York. The Big Apple--a telling nickname--is the city of 50,000 eateries, of fish wriggling in Chinatown baskets, huge pastrami sandwiches on rye, fizzy egg creams, and frosted black and whites. It is home to possibly the densest concentration of ethnic and regional food establishments in the world, from German and Jewish delis to Greek diners, Brazilian steakhouses, Puerto Rican and Dominican bodegas, halal food carts, Irish pubs, Little Italy, and two Koreatowns (Flushing and Manhattan). This is the city where, if you choose to have Thai for dinner, you might also choose exactly which region of Thailand you wish to dine in.Savoring Gotham weaves the full tapestry of the city's rich gastronomy in nearly 570 accessible, informative A-to-Z entries. Written by nearly 180 of the most notable food experts-most of them New Yorkers--Savoring Gotham addresses the food, people, places, and institutions that have made New York cuisine so wildly diverse and immensely appealing. Reach only a little ways back into the city's ever-changing culinary kaleidoscope and discover automats, the precursor to fast food restaurants, where diners in a hurry dropped nickels into slots to unlock their premade meal of choice. Or travel to the nineteenth century, when oysters cost a few cents and were pulled by the bucketful from the Hudson River. Back then the city was one of the major centers of sugar refining, and of brewing, too--48 breweries once existed in Brooklyn alone, accounting for roughly 10% of all the beer brewed in the United States. Travel further back still and learn of the Native Americans who arrived in the area 5,000 years before New York was New York, and who planted the maize, squash, and beans that European and other settlers to the New World embraced centuries later.Savoring Gotham covers New York's culinary history, but also some of the most recognizable restaurants, eateries, and culinary personalities today. And it delves into more esoteric culinary realities, such as urban farming, beekeeping, the Three Martini Lunch and the Power Lunch, and novels, movies, and paintings that memorably depict Gotham's foodscapes. From hot dog stands to haute cuisine, each borough is represented. A foreword by Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and an extensive bibliography round out this sweeping new collection.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. “This is an excellent and very well thought-out book many By Richard Frisbie Savoring Gotham, A Food Lover's Companion to New York City Editor-in-chief: Andrew F. Smith and Foreword by Garrett OliverEditor-in-chief Andrew F. Smith, a widely respected food historian and the author of several award-winning culinary books such as New York City: A Food Biography, and foreword author and James Beard Award-winning Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster of the Brooklyn Brewery, joined forces with Oxford University Press to create this be-all and end-all compendium of food in New York City. But they couldn’t do it alone. They wrangled nearly 180 of “the most notable NYC food experts” into sharing their areas of expertise within the more than 700 pages of this weighty tome. With approximately 570 entries, Savoring Gotham is the most comprehensive reference work on the history of NYC food and drink. The list of New York-centric foods is long: Snapple, egg-creams, Borden’s condensed milk, cherry cokes, knishes, Salisbury steak, Haagen-Dazs ice-cream, dill pickles, cheese cake, pizza, and Oreo cookies make up the short list. There are many, many more. Remember, what wasn’t created in Gotham was adopted and popularized to the point that it became primarily associated with New York City, such as New York-style pizza. From bagels to Waldorf salad, all the iconic foods of New York City are identified, their history and cultural identity are explored and their transitions as tastes changed over generations are examined. The same holds true for all the noteworthy restaurants and restaurateurs, the personalities in the front and the back of the house, the food purveyors, from pushcarts to huge wholesale and retail outlets, the markets, the celebrities, ethnic foods, films, neighborhoods and even the advertising and publications that promoted them—all finally get the recognition they are due. As the award-winning culinary historian Laura Shapiro said: “This is an excellent and very well thought-out book many, many writers have been desperate to consult for years.”To give you a brief example, did you know that:• “black and whites,” the oversized vanilla cake-like cookie with black and white iced hemispheres is a New York cookie?• Mimi Sheraton, famous food-writer and critic, was the first female restaurant critic for The New York Times?• by 1760 New York was the leading city in prostitution, alcohol consumption, and oyster eating?• by 1880 New York area oyster beds produced 700 million oysters a year, and that rich or poor, oysters were the unifying egalitarian food of every New Yorker?• the police raid at the Stonewall Inn causing three days of rioting in Greenwich Village in 1969 marked the beginning of the gay liberation movement?• wearing its 1920s nickname “The Big Apple” New York is widely acknowledged as the Food Capital of America?Lest you think Savoring Gotham is just about food, bars, breweries, and distillers get coverage, as do neighborhoods, nationalities and life styles. Entries such as “gay bars,” “Greenwich Village,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Prohibition,” “Harlem,” “Brooklyn,” “Five Points,” and “Puerto Rican”, among many others, plumb the culinary fringes. Naturally, given Garrett Oliver’s prominence in the brewing field, and the popularity of craft beers and ciders today, breweries get their fair share of attention, too.The first brewery in New York (then New Amsterdam) was opened around 1632 “on a street which became known as Brewers Street.” By the end of the 1800s the State of New York grew most of the hops for all the breweries in America, 48 of which were in New York City. Early NYC breweries that grew to national recognition were Schaefer, Piels, Schlitz and Rinegold. But today those once prominent names have less recognition than the modern Brooklyn Brewery.Probably everyone reading Savoring Gotham will find something missing or only mentioned briefly. One of the earliest references to food in New Netherlands’ literature was the theft of a peach by a Native American from a Dutchman’s tree that caused the “Peach Massacre” or the “Peach War.” It is not included in Savoring Gotham. And while Pansy Bars are mentioned, it is only in one sentence, relegating them to Harlem and Greenwich Village. The Pansy Craze could have used its own entry, placing the widely popular establishments featuring outrageous gay and drag performers squarely in midtown during the early 1930s. This was the peak of homosexual acceptance in America between the wars. There are other omissions as well, notably that of Jane Brody, cook book author and New York Times columnist, but perhaps with her body of literature leaning more to health and nutrition, she did not make the cut. No matter, there is nothing that can’t be amended and updated in a second edition. Meanwhile, the editors made clear that any book of this sort inevitably had to leave some things out either by design or inadvertence. Then again, the subject may simply be too big to fit in one volume. But what does fit is an exhaustive overview of the rich culinary history of the melting pot of America: New York City.It has to be mentioned that besides the food and beverage entries, or, more specifically, because of what those entries contain, a good overview of the history of New York City, from the earliest of settlers—the Native Americans—through the Dutch and right up to today’s mix of ethnicities, can be gleaned from these pages. So you may come to Savoring Gotham for the culinary aspects of New York City, but you’ll leave well versed in its local history.Ethnic foods, native foods, food culture, foodies, celebrity chefs, famous restaurants, restaurant trends, culinary schools and the journalists who chronicle them—all this and much, much more can be found in the pages of Savoring Gotham, A Food Lover’s Companion to New York City.

Alphabetical order of entries created the need for much repetition of information. A thematic grouping of interrelated entries would have minimized the need for repeated explanations.Has a depth of good information, but as is too often the case, is somewhat Manhattan-centric. You can't examine New York and stop cold at the city line. At least I can't.

I have purchased many watercolor books, some with tracings and some with detailed pictures to copy, but none of them have really suited my personal art style....therefore, when I saw this book it immediately appealed to me. Reading and thumbing through this book for the past few hours, I have discovered that Jane Betteridge is my kind of artist!! She combines texture and depth with bold color and encourages a person to just enjoy painting and doing what you love. To me, watercolors need not be structured with detailed strokes and specific definition of each feature of a painting. You can do acrylics or oils if that is the type of art you prefer. Her projects are fabulous and include adding beads, string, leaves, shells....mixed media. I can't wait to finish this review and go to my studio to try out her techniques. Her style may not appeal to everyone, but I just love it!

Great watercolor painting tips & interesting techniques. Very user friendly. I think it is a very good book for a beginner as it doesn't get too involved to overwhelm us newbies. There are 7 different detailed project demos laid out nicely. I found the book inspiring. I can't wait to get started. Downsides: 1. I wish the book were longer. 2. She has a DVD, but you have to by it from SAA online company from the UK, so it won't play on US DVD players, but it said should work on laptops. 3. She uses 300lb?-sadly I have 140, watercolor paper because it does need stretching and it can take on a great deal of water. Happy painting!!!!

By Lindy Perrins This is a great book for those who have an experimental approach to their art or for those wishing to explore this approach to art. Can't wait to tell my students about this book. Also wonderful that it is available on Kindle. Thanks Jane and Amazon.

USA TODAY BESTSELLER • Perfect for fans of Mary Balogh and Eloisa James, Sharon Cullen’s seductive new historical romance ignites as a shy country girl and a hotheaded duke surrender to dangerous temptations. Lady Sara Emerson was jolted out of her dull provincial life by her cousin’s murder. Now that the killer seems to be targeting her, Sara seeks help from the man who was once her cousin’s fiancé, Gabriel Ferguson, Duke of Rossmoyne. With his towering frame and fiery personality, Ross cuts an intimidating figure. Living under his protection, however, has its own hazards—like the sudden urge Sara feels to take their relationship in new, exquisitely inappropriate directions. Dazzled by the social graces of his betrothed, Ross never noticed her shy, blushing cousin. Looking at Sara now, though, he’s drawn to her lovely eyes and calm disposition. Funny how a year away from the hustle and bustle of the ton changes a man. But Ross has no intention of allowing a woman to interfere with his plan to return overseas. He will simply capture the murderer and set sail once again. The problem is, with her beguiling lips and heavenly touch, Sara makes him never want to leave home—or his bed—again.Praise for The Reluctant Duchess “Riveting . . . The true depth of the characters is revealed through dialogue that eschews Austen-style witticisms for thoughtful discussion and quiet but determined clashes of will. Intense romance and intriguing mystery make this a tale to be savored.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Cullen allows the suspense to ebb and flow naturally between finding clues and hitting dead ends. She wisely uses the downtime to develop two strong main characters. Ross’s ability to see past Sara’s shy reserve and his admiration for her courage and strength will have readers rooting for the couple’s success. Highly recommended for historical romance buffs who prefer a little mayhem in the mix.”—Library Journal (starred review) “Many readers will enjoy this lively Victorian tale starring a protective hero and a quietly stubborn heroine.”—Anne Gracie, award-winning author of The Spring Bride “The Reluctant Duchess is a tale replete with sizzling tension and high stakes, as could only come from the pen of Sharon Cullen.”—Ashlyn Macnamara, author of What a Lady Requires “Sharon Cullen’s best book yet! I stayed up late reading it, kept spellbound by the nail-biting mystery and riveting pace. The cherry on top was the sexy hero and spunky heroine. A keeper!”—Shana Galen, author of The Rogue You Know “Sexy and smart with great historical drama and lush descriptions.”—It’s About the Book “Tender and fiery, subtle and dangerous and so very satisfying . . . a lovely romance and a charming couple to root for.”—Keeper Bookshelf “I recommend that fans of Regency Romance who enjoy a bit of mystery/thriller mixed in to the plot put this one on your lists.”—ReadingWorld “A wonderful story that will leave you wanting more.”—I Am, Indeed “I was delighted by this novel. . . . Ross and Sara are two characters that you just can’t help but fall in love with. They are just amazing and the story is great too! This is my first time reading Sharon Cullen but I am definitely going to be looking for more of her work.”—Live Laugh & Love Books Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

I did not like the main female character, found her unbelievable. One minute she was ultra shy and the next she was like a bitch (dog, not a person) in heat. The main male, I found wishy-washy. As far as I am concerned, there was no chemistry between them.

38 of 43 people found the following review helpful. Hmmm, By Lucky Clucker I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley.I was hoping to find a new author in the historical section, but this book was really a bust for me.I thought the characterizations were flat and uninteresting--also more than a bit anachronistic. I know a modern sensibility is part of most historical novels (and I hate that but tend to accept it) but this was beyond what I find enjoyable. I had a difficult time reading the book and ultimately stopped. The writing is pretty basic and the book lacks charm. The characters are lackluster and I frankly didn't believe them.Anyhow, this seems to appeal to a lot of readers, judging by all the positive reviews, so I think my standards might be out of whack.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Failed to engage my interest By like2read This was a poorly executed story with characters who lacked depth and consistency, and wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much 'I'm not good enough' bleating from the heroine, and a hero who had a backbone as resilient as overcooked spaghetti. The mystery around which this story was built certainly had promise. Unfortunately, the execution of the writing sold it down the river. One of the very real irritants for me as I slogged on with the reading was the bizarre situation in which the heroine from the word go, calls her aunt and uncle 'mother and father'. Excuse me???? That is just not natural, nor is it particularly healthy. It put me right off the heroine----but sadly, she did a darned sight more to put me off her as the story labored on. She goes from shrinking violet to sexually demanding in the blink of an eye. Professes to get all tongue-tied when she has to converse with the people she's been raised to fit in with - ie: Polite Society, then takes centre stage and delivers an apparently stellar performance in the rookeries of London when trying to elicit information from a hard-boiled inhabitant of the underbelly of London (and in doing so, consigns the willing-to-be-consigned duke/hero to the role of silent bystander).I didn't like this story - on so many levels - and didn't like the characters in it.Cannot recommend.

I've always been a bit of a doodler but never really took the craft seriously. Lately I've been getting into drawing images for my book covers but I never seem to be able to capture on paper what I have inside my head. When I saw How To Draw Awesome Cartoons I immediately downloaded the book and studied it carefully. Author Janie Noyes leads the reader step by step to the creation of really well drawn cartoons. I am now using what I've learned in this book to create my own images... ones which I am much more satisfied with than before. I'm not there yet, but with a little practice and a little more guidance from this book, I'll get there!

There are plenty of books and movies about what different soldiers experienced in war - but few grind out the details of why they do it. Sons of the Flag brings together the veterans from each of the American wars from WWII to the present and the veteran firefighters of 9/11 who served during the greatest attack on American soil. Each contributor tells precisely why they do what they do - putting country and brotherhood before their own safety. Weaving their chapters together, author Ryan "Birdman" Parrott, an American veteran, shares the journey that led from being a self-described screw-up to becoming the visionary and leader of Sons of the Flag, an organization dedicated to burn survivors. The contributors associate key moments in their lives that impacted them forever in putting their brothers to the right and left before themselves. Parrott asks readers to imagine a country where all citizens were as dedicated as these men in serving their fellow Americans.

By Dallas Sub Sailor A friend of mine here in Dallas was actually one of men featured in the book, a true Korean War hero and well depicted by the author. Overall, I thought the book was o.k., but "Korean War Heroes" was a better read or at least I thought so. On the other hand, if you have never served it is good to get a believable account of what some our heroes endure for their fellow countrymen. It is relatively short book and an easy to read. Most of us who served in the armed servies, especially during the Cold War, had much more mundane experiences than these select individual. Speaking personally, I served in the nuclear Navy, i.e., the submarine service back in the mid 1960s. I am glad that I did it and I am proud of my service, but our job was to watch, wait and be ready to retaliate in force if the need ever arose. For the most part boredom and tedium was our biggest enemy Thankfully, we never had to launch our missiles or fire a torpedo in anger. If we had, it would certainly be a much sadder world today.I don't know what percent of the men and women that serve today ultimately find themselves in harm's way, but it really doesn't matter. When you are on active duty, you go where you are told to go and when you are there you do what you are told to do to the best of your ability. It may or may not involve mortal danger. It is all service to our county, but some service is a lot more harrowing and demanding than others.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Leadership Starts With Attitude By Reid Berryman Reading Sons of The Flag from the civilian perspective serves as a reminder to the thoughtfully tuned attitudes and visionaries that emerge from our service men and women. The author pays homage to those servicing the U.S. in many ways beyond military roles. Selfless leadership and personal discipline are qualities all the heroes highlighted in this book represent.Historical accounts of past heroes that may have otherwise gone uncaptured were well-preserved with their emotion. The personality of each hero is well communicated and Ryan's personal stories reflect the common string that binds all of these servicemen, a commitment to the team. The accounts provided are the detailed realities that transpired. Ryan includes his own fears, challenges, and concerns that inspire us not to just move forward in life but to advance with character and integrity. We are all part of teams that come and go, some we fall into, others we strive to join, and few we have the opportunity to lead. This book reminds us that independent of our role, our deeper commitment is always to take care of those around us.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A must read for every leader and patriot... By Gregory Turnell This book affirms that the American spirit is alive and well. And despite a small assemblage of morally bankrupt derelicts that take from this country, who have a sense of entitlement or those ignorant few that express themselves by stomping on the American flag, the large majority of Americans are good!Sons of The Flag reveals just a few of the warriors and first responders that keep this country safe and the tried souls that hold honor and brotherhood to the highest degree. It affirms a lineage of good men in this great nation who aren’t afraid to give their last full measure for their country and fellow brothers, Americas faithful "Sons of The Flag". If every American, man woman and child would read this book, there would be no doubt in this patriot’s mind that those American men and woman would lead a more virtuous, humble and grateful life.

Chubby & Charming (Big & Beautiful Book 1), by Mary E Thompson

About the Author Mary E. Thompson grew up loving to read, like a good little girl. Many nights she would fall asleep with the flashlight still turned on as she hid under the covers trying to finish the last few pages of a book. As an adult, the light from her ereader means she doesn't need a flashlight, but she still stays up way too late to finish a book. When Mary's not reading she's playing with her two kids or living out her own romance novel with her hubby. She has a weakness for chocolate, especially when it's paired with peanut butter, and has been known to have a bad day just because there's no chocolate in the house. Mary grew up in Buffalo, NY and swears she's the only local to never ski or snowboard. Soccer was always her sport, with a couple adventures in white water rafting and skydiving to keep things interesting. Mary moved to South Carolina for college but missed Buffalo every day. Yeah she thinks she's crazy, too. She somehow convinced her South Carolina born and bred hubby to return to Buffalo to raise their kids and live out their lives. He’s still not sure what he was thinking.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. this book was a refreshing change from a book about the 'struggles' the pretty people in most books seem to have By RBfrom RJA Not being a curvy person, I can't relate to the struggles, doubts and self worth issues Mandy has because of her weight. Having been a wallflower all of my life, this book was a refreshing change from a book about the 'struggles' the pretty people in most books seem to have. It is a great book about finding someone who just loves us. Not because of, or in spite of anything, just loves us. Books that have ordinary people falling is love with ordinary people would probably be boring, or very hard to write, but most of us pretty ordinary and all have the same yearning to have somebody love us. It was a good read.

I could relate with Mandy's doubts and insecurities about Xander's intentions and passion. Xander is a woman's fantasy guy at it's finest! Great book Mary!

About the Author Overview: As my art and vision evolve—from blank slate, to paper, to mural, to installation, to public space—I attempt to expand the viewer’s understanding and comprehension of the spaces, structures, and communities around us. My intent is to integrate art into the existing environment, creating harmony, balance, and adding life to an otherwise colorless wall while also encouraging the viewer to consider space, culture and the larger world. Construction: Produced using a hatch drawing style, my work utilizes fine lines and details to create simultaneously diminutive constructions that, when viewed together, unfold as the viewer is physically positioned to the artwork- each stroke of color endowing the compositional elements with vibrancy and movement. Most of my work is figurative, and I draw inspiration from the surrounding community and content in the form and expression of my subjects. More recently I have explored the connection of the existing architecture and construction of the physical buildings to the work itself. Natural surfaces and extant flaws, such as inset holes and missing bricks, become desirable parts of the canvas. Theme Relative to Project: Throughout my travels to Israel, Russia, Hong Kong, Mexico, Malaysia, Japan, the United States and Europe, I have explored the social construct of individual versus community in my work. Diverse cultures and heritages interest me and I create work as a catalyst for discussing diversity and community. In recognition of an inherent interconnectedness of the individual within the community, many of my recent murals have featured individuals that are distinct from the surrounding community – resulting in an intermingling of cultures within the space where the piece is based. The facture of my paintings echo this theme with each tiny line, communicating the innate relationship between individual within the larger composition of community. http://www.idrawalot.com/ https://instagram.com/_idrawalot/

This is the first detailed account of the remarkable British writer and artist John Hargrave (1894 1982) and his three creations: The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift, The Green Shirt Movement for Social Credit and The Social Credit Party of Great Britain. Combining art, politics and design to visually stunning effect, Hargrave and his followers created a maverick but uniquely English form of modernism, one which harked back to a mythical past but also looked forward to a futuristic Utopia when mankind would be freed from the tyranny of work and war. A product of his turbulent times, Hargrave believed in ritual, ceremony, symbology and the resolute imagination of the creative individual as the keys to a better world. The book draws on the extensive visual archive of the Kibbo Kift, held at the Museum of London, comprising graphic designs, photographs, ceremonial objects, banners, costume, regalia, log books and archive material, much of which has not been seen in public since the 1920s and 1930s. The collection includes many striking photographs by Angus McBean, official Kin Photographer in the late 1920s. Designing Utopia also touches on Hargrave s career as a writer. In his novels, as with his graphics, Hargrave s imagination drew from the fragmented modern world of mass culture, advertising and film he saw around him and re-cast its elements in ways that suited his convictions about social order. Hargrave and the Kibbo Kift have been under-explored by cultural historians. But their time has come. The story of the Kibbo Kift has strong resonances with twenty-first century debates about art, politics, individualism, anti-capitalism, nature and the environment. It is also a story about English youth adapting to a new century, new ideologies and a new sense of possibilities in a global world."

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated By Munro A fascinating, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated account of the life and work of John Hargrave, founder of the Kibbo Kift Kindred and later among the chief protagonists of the Social Credit movement in England.Exemplifying the virtues and limitations of the early 20th century "self-taught man", Hargrave was accomplished in a variety of fields and evidently possessed great powers of imagination, energy and charisma. He designed the Kibbo Kift Kindred as a pacifistic, progressive and universalist breakaway from Baden-Powell's Christian/nationalist/militaristic Scouting movement.Although never very great in numbers, the Kindred were highly active and influential during the decade following the First World War. They organised camping and hiking expeditions, staged elaborately theatrical rituals and mystical plays, produced strikingly original handcrafts and costumes, all according to Hargrave's comprehensive philosophy for the betterment of each individual Kin member and the wider society. As war again approached, Hargrave attempted to transform the Kindred into a political movement, via the quasi-militaristic Green Shirt Brigade, agitating for the institution of a radical, Social Credit-based economic reform. Essentially failing in this attempt, Hargrave gradually withdrew from the public spotlight, and his efforts had been largely forgotten by the time he died in 1982.The final chapter argues persuasively that the Kindred was, in fact, an idea decades ahead of its time, pointing out parallels between Hargrave's Utopian visions and later counter-cultural movements such as the hippies, neo-Paganism, the Burning Man festival and the Occupy movement. As well as the lucid text, "Designing Utopia" includes a great variety of illustrations including many photographs taken from the archive of the Kibbo Kift Kindred, now curated by the Museum of London. It also features many examples of Hargrave's own textile, woodcarving and poster artwork.

Excerpt from Memoirs of Elder Thomas Campbell: Together With a Brief Memoir of Mrs. Jane CampbellOf the great mass of humanity little more can be chronicled than that "Such a person was born on one day and died upon another." Of a very few of all the molds and types of mankind is either the life or the death a subject of much interest or concern, beyond the parish precincts in which they lived and died. Others, indeed, there are, whose lives are more or less an interest to their cotemporaries and posterity; but, besides these, there is in the great drama of humanity, a goodly number whose lives are public blessings, and whose characters and achievements constitute them, more or less, benefactors of the race. If a man only builds one house, plants one tree, and properly educates one child, he is to be enrolled, though in an humble niche, a benefactor of his race. Between him, however, and a Franklin, a Howard, a Washington, a Joseph, a Moses, a Peter, or a Paul, what an interval! The holy Seriptures themselves recognize these distinctions, these diversities of ranks, dignities, and honors: "They that be righteous shall shine as the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness, as the stars forever and ever." "Honor to whom honor is due" is a stereotyped precept of Paul to the Romans. The private Christian who, in this present world, honorably acknowledges the Lord Jesus, shall, by the Lord Jesus himself, be most honorably "acknowledged before his Father and before his holy angels."Thus, while "the memory of the wicked shall rot," the memory of "the righteous is blessed." These oracles were to be handed from father to son, through all succeeding generations; and doubtless, too, for the purpose of stimulating the energies, of our nature to high, and holy, and heavenly aspirations. They were not intended to create envy, a false ambition, or to stimulate pride or jealousy, or any sinister end or motive.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Victor Vadney This is an excellent book that shows the thoughts of Thomas Campbell, who was a true leader of the American Restoration movement.. His thought was to leave the teachings of uninspired men and rely only on the Bible. In the New Testament we find the precious gospel and the Law of Christ. If we believe what Peter preached in Acts 2, and we respond to his command to "repent and be baptized," then we too will be saved. Then we, like they, must also sit at the apostles feet that we might learn the whole counsel of Christ, just as Christ commanded in Matt 28:20.
