More Letters of Charles Darwin Volume 1, by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

I don't believe I can properly express the amount of detail that is here. If you want to know about crops, and the economic impact of colonies and shipbuilding, and industrialization, and the sixty hour work week, this will be Heaven for you.Closes with the Polish problem. Very interesting how the Poles were out-competing the Germans in what is now Polish territory.8,970 locations long. Picked it up while free

By Margaret A Wiltberger A fast paced and insightful memoir from Buffalo's father of progressive radio. The recounting of his 45 year DJ career is personal, fun and witty. Anyone who came of age in the 60's and 70"S will be nostalgic for the early days of progressive FM radio. It includes interviews with some of the greats such as Joan Baez. If you like music, any kind, or if you ever lived Western New York it is a must read.

By matthew riedy When radio is done at it's best there is a person behind the microphone who has an extensive knowledge of music. In the 60's and part of the 70's when FM rock radio was in it's infancy and given great freedom, Jim Santella, a musician himself, was one of those chosen few. Here he shares memories from his 40 plus years on Buffalo radio. His knowledge of jazz, rock blues and more. His interview with Joan Baez that went well beyond polite as she was enjoying his company so much, she waved off security who's duty it was to keep chatty DJ's at bay...his backstage invitation from an ailing David Bowie...who despite not feeling well, enjoyed their phone chat so much earlier that day, Bowie poured him some cognac and they continued their earlier conversation. That is Jim Santella. Intelligent, engaging and passionate. Beyond radio and being a musician, Jim shares stories of his work in theater, his trip to Woodstock, his days as an entertainment reviewer for The Buffalo News and as floor director for WNED's The Mark Russell Comedy Special for more than 20 years. It's a great read for music lover's, radio fans and frankly anyone who endeavors to live an artistically driven life. Matt Riedy

By Eric I’d like to offer my review of Jim Santella’s new book, “Classic Rock, Classic Jock.” But first, there’s something you have to understand about Jim: He shines with an inner light, a brilliant internal radiance. He can’t contain it. It seeps out through his twinkling eyes, or through his big ol’ goofy grin, or possibly through his fingertips; I don’t know for sure. I *do* know that he can’t control it; he may not even know he possesses it. But it shines on everyone he meets, and when you are bathed in that light, you feel calm, peaceful, happy and optimistic. In his book, Jim takes us back through a time of (mostly) happy memories. I especially enjoyed the reminiscences about his early days at WBFO, since I shared some of those good times, and made lifelong friends there. Throughout, Jim tells lots of nice, quick stories that add up to a fine re-examination of a life well-lived.But the odd thing about this book, the *best* thing about it, is that Jim’s inner light somehow comes through the black ink on white pages. The book is suffused with his magical inner glow, and the reader finds himself calm, peaceful, happy and optimistic – just like Jim.Thanks, Santella Claus, for sharing your light with us.

RUNNING TOWARD DANGER is a book that will shock you, give you chills, and make you cheer! It is one of the least-known and least-presented major awards offered by the Boy Scouts of America. But similar to the Eagle Scout medal, it also is highly celebrated--perhaps more. It's the Honor Medal for Lifesaving. In its various forms, it embodies the Medal of Merit for saving a life, the Honor Medal for doing so at personal risk, and the Honor Medal with crossed palms for extreme personal risk--all that has made Scouting an honored American icon for over a century. During those decades, a little more than a thousand of the highest medals have been awarded to Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers, Venturers, Varsity Scouts, and adult volunteers. And every one of those rescues is an unforgettable story. RUNNING TOWARD DANGER is the first book that tells the extraordinary saga of Scouting's Honor Medal recipients and how the award itself transformed American life. It is the product of extensive original research into the BSA's national archives, vintage newspaper accounts, and interviews of recent recipients. The narrative includes more than 150 accounts of the most remarkable and hair-raising Honor Medal rescues of the last century. Also, it uncovers the crisis in the early days of the award that ultimately changed the direction of Scouting and brought intensive first aid, lifesaving, and safety training to the nation's youth. RUNNING TOWARD DANGER is filled with extraordinary characters. First among equals is the buckskinned sophisticate, co-founder of Scouting, and friend of U.S. presidents, Daniel Carter Beard, who created the Honor Medal and then nearly drove it to disaster. But there also are hundreds of young men and women who find themselves in the most terrifying situations imaginable, fly into action, and not only survive but also save others in the process. It is a narrative that swings from a lonely, lightning-scorched mountain top to an isolated farmhouse, to crowded urban neighborhoods, to shark-filled waters-- each story presenting its own dangers that demands a clear-minded and smart strategy, requiring an abundance of bravery from its young rescuers. For Scouts and their families these stories are the best lessons imaginable on what makes Scouting great and what the character-building training programs of the Boy Scouts of America develop in young people. But this also is a book for all Americans that celebrates the courage and resourcefulness of our nation's youth. You never will forget these remarkable stories of young people who, when met with the ultimate challenge, don't hesitate to run toward danger to help others. RUNNING TOWARD DANGER is a landmark testament within the story of the American Scouting movement and is a worthy companion to author Michael S. Malone's award-winning history of Eagle Scouting, FOUR PERCENT.

Running Toward Danger: Real Life Scouting Action Stories of Heroism, Valor & Guts, by Michael S. Malone

Review Yesterday, I received Running Toward Danger: Real Live Scouting Action Stories of Heroism, Valor & Guts (WindRush Publishers) in the mail. It was a gift from Michael S. Malone, the author.

Malone, who wrote Four Percent: The Story of Uncommon Youth in a Century of American Life, may have another bestseller with this book (Amazon lists Four Percent in its top 100 best sellers even now three years later). But from the moment you pick up his new book you are in for a rare reading experience.

The pages look and feel like my old World Book you know, that thick-paged, slick feeling that invites a serious long read. The book's layout moves from one to three columns with varying fonts, type sizes and colors. The illustrations are like a Marvel comic. In all it grabs your eye and moves you forward in a flow of fascinating copy and visual excitement.

I read fifty of the 384 pages in one sitting, but not because of the feel or look, but for the insight into early BSA history and a country that expected Scouts to save lives, which they did. I also love the insights into a nation of boys so eager for Scouting that our fledgling office could not keep up with the demand for awards for which boys qualified.

As an example, Arthur Eldred, BSA's first Eagle Scout, was so taken by Scouting that in just two years he had qualified for the Eagle award, months before BSA would actually have the badges.

These success stories in American history finally get the telling they deserve; this is the story of a century of the Boy Scout Honor Medal for Lifesaving and its impact on American life.

Scouting volunteer David Scott, publisher of Running Toward Danger, did the math and came up with the staggering number of how many people are alive today because of Scouting heroism.

''An estimated 3 to 5 million people, the equivalent of a city the size of Houston and Chicago, are alive today in the U.S. because they, or one of their parents and grandparents, had their life saved by a Boy Scout,'' Scott says. ''No volunteer lifesaving program ... has had such an impact on a country.''

Scott says ''most people have never heard of the Honor Medal. Little more than a thousand of the highest order medals (for risking one's own life to save another) have been earned since 1912, and just 13,000 of the lowest three orders (for saving a life at little or no personal risk in the same period). These are stories of the most incredible acts of risk and bravery: stories that scream to be told and re-told,'' he said.

I agree. Scouts may have read about a Scout saving someone in Boy's Life, but they re probably not aware of this unique heroism award and certainly they need to hear each of these amazing action stories.

I think Malone sent me a copy so that our editorial staff might share some of its inspiration with readers. However after reading for several hours last evening, I wouldn't know how to share the inspiration it offers properly you will have to get your own copy.

H.R. Hall was an early 20th century historian who wrote at length about ancient Greece in a number of highly regarded histories, including this one. From the preface: "The series of “Studies of the Mycenæan Age” which are comprised in this volume contain the notes made during the course of some years’ study of the “Mycenæan Question,” expanded and thrown into a connected form. The chief problems of “Mycenæan” archæology are dealt with separately, but at the same time are also, as far as possible, connected in order to form a homogeneous study of the Mycenæan Question as it stands to-day. Here and there it has been found impossible, when discussing some one problem, to steer clear of trenching upon the domain of another; repetition of argument has, however, been as far as possible avoided, and it is hoped that these chapters will be of use both to the scientific archæological student and to the layman who interests himself in the most fascinating search which ever yet allured the seeker after forgotten history—the search for the origins of Greek civilization.

Read All About It By propertius This book is fascinating for several reasons aside from the obvious fact that it is a brilliant introductory course in pre-Minoan history. Without belaboring this obvious fact, it is interesting in that it was written at the dawn of an era which was applying modern scientific methods to that field and as far as fields such as these go we are truly just progressing to the next level added by continual archiological discoveries as the author reminds us even back then. If the reader wants a sense of how exciting this field and its ideas were, than this is the perfect place to start.

Epictetus was a Greek philosopher who lived during the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D (55 – 135). Interestingly, Epictetus did not actually write anything; all texts by Epictetus were written by his student Arrian.  Included in this collection are The Discourses, The Enchiridion , and fragments attributed to Epictetus.

About the Author Epictetus (circa 55-135 ce) taught in Rome until the year 94 ce, when Emperor Domitian banished philosophers from the city. In exile, he established a school of philosophy where his distinguished students included Marcus Aurelius, author of "Meditations". 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed By M. Ricketts Unfortunately, Amazon has no review of this product so I am taking it into my hands to elaborate on what it is. It is all the works attributed to Epictetus, translate by a woman names Elizabeth Carter and published in the 1700's.The bad points are that this is a scanned version of an already existing work, not a reprint. Some of the letters, or even whole sentences, are blurred and illegible. Also, the original book was printed during a time period when the letter 's' was sometimes represented by a character that looks more like a lower case 'f', so you're reading the word "success" but it looks like 'fucceff'.One good point of this book is that Carter did provided an introduction to the book which is a very good overview of Stoic Philosophy. She was obviously very well versed in Classical Philosophy, as she quickly analyzed the most important aspects of the Stoic belief system, delved into the difference between the Stoic and Socratic beliefs, and did quick comparisons between Stoicism and Christianity.I think though that the one major flaw of this product is the price. If the book were hard cover and a complete reprinting I could see where it would be worth $30.00 or even $40.00, as it is all the works attributed to Epictetus. However, since it is a soft cover scanned text I think the price should be much lower. All in all, I would say this book gets three stars for being the collected works attributed to Epictetus and for Carter's introduction, but it lost two stars for being a scanned text and for being over priced/soft cover.

Ninja Slayer Kills 1, by Koutarou Sekine

About the Author Though their existence is shrouded in rumor and mystery, the American authors Bradley Bond and Philip Ninj@ Morzez first published Ninja Slayer in a college literary magazine. Some time later, Japanese translators Yu Honda and Leika Sugi came across the original material and helped the authors publish the title on twitter, making it an underground success in Japan that resulted in the publication of novels, manga, and an upcoming animated series.

Hayes Ninja Slayer Kills, which is an adaptation of a novel that isnt published in america, is an accessible and fast paced mature take on the ninja action genre of stories. The plot may be been there done that offering nothing new beyond cybernetics tied into the ninjas, but man is it charming. I found myself initially turned off by how standard it was but by the time the second arc was going on, I started to really want to see Ninja Slayer-san succeed in his mission. The enemies too with their personalities ended up making it enjoyable, Darkninja-san was easily the one to make this special as well as the first major enemy. I even liked the sensei too. Im hyped for more of this series just to see where it goes as the Six Gates antagonists of the dark syndicate get a focus to take down Ninja Slayer-san.In terms of translation quality and readability, it was on the more challenging side. It appeared that the editor and translator decided to go with using two types of translation pages for this instead of footnotes on a page or using their translated terms in the text bubble. For people who are familiar to anime and some Japanese words, they wouldnt have trouble understanding gomen and domo, but for others it would be annoying turning to the end of the volume to understand these terms as well as many more technical way of the ninja type of terms. I would have preferred the translated words or footnotes be used in the pages with the words instead of going for the stylish choice and putting it at the end of the volume. Also, this manga leaves the honorifics in the translation as well. Oh the positive side, there were no typos anywhere. The text flowed easily. Sound effects were translated underneath the Japanese characters (katakana). Extras (design sheets of the characters) were translated as well which was pleasing. The design commentary ended up being pretty chuckle inducing at times. There was also a translated afterword. All in all, Ninja Slayer Kills may be a story that we've all encountered before but its pleasing and stylish artwork, cybernetic ninjas, page spreads that ooze coolness in everyday imaginable, and charming characters, makes it worth checking out.

Graphic, Edgy, Violent Goodness By OutlawPoet It's been a long time since I've read any Manga and what a reintroduction this was!Ninja Slayer Kills is violent, graphic, and a bit of cyberpunk ninja killing goodness. In his intro, the author entreats you to go to the back of the book and read his glossary prior to starting the book. I would agree that you should do so. While many of the words are common, the author has infused his own nuances into the definitions of these words, This is important because those nuances add to the world building here.Koutarou Sekine further explains that he hoped to make this accessible to new Manga readers and those new to this world. As a reader far removed from manga (it became a horrendously expensive hobby for me once upon a time), he was largely successful. It did take me a little bit to get up to speed on the story, but once I was, I was hooked. Please note that, while in English, this is very Japanese Manga - don't expect anything Americanized. The graphics are very traditional, while still being modern and edgy.I'm afraid my very expensive hobby has returned. I want to read more of this!

I am familiar with graphic novels in that I know of their existence. The first thing I noticed and I'm sure everyone who reads these books are familiar with, is that you read the book backwards. You start on what would be the last page of a regular book and instead of reading the pages from left to right, you read them from right to left. Interesting to say the least, but after a few pages it seemed pretty normal. The story itself was fun but I had trouble trying to decipher the illustrations. To be honest it was hard to follow the first time I read it, so I read it again and gleaned moe information that made the story make more sense. The illustrations need improvement, but as I am not familiar with this type of work, it may just be the style that was confusing.I do appreciate the translations to the action sound symbols and the glossary of terms in the back. That added depth to the story I would have otherwise glossed over.I went with four stars for the story and the glossary. I think the graphics were more at three stars because they were in my opinion, confusing.

When Feral House first published the award-winning Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground, little was known about the "black metal" genre of music, or how many of its members were involved in the murder of citizens, the torching of churches, or its link to Fascist ideas.

We've all heard about the racist form of skinhead punk music, but little do we know of the groups involved, and how they got involved in right-wing political movements.

The White Nationalist Skinhead Movement is the first book to provide much more than mere photographs of the scene, documenting the bands, their members, the releases, shows, and infamous events. Robert Forbes and Eddie Stampton can authoritatively speak of the movement, obtaining first-hand material from members of the scene.

This book covers both British and American bands, and even if you revile the movement, its ideas, and its music, this is an important piece of pop culture history.

Feral House's controversial Lords of Chaos has sold over one hundred thousand copies.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Pretty solid. It's more a history of the RAC ... By ACAB Pretty solid. It's more a history of the RAC scene and the bands involved than it is the skinhead scene. Although there are tons of first person/eyewitness accounts of gigs, everyday life as a skinhead, major fights etc. The history of Skrewdriver year by year is great. After all the endless books about the various different punk scenes that have popped up in the last decade, I was waiting for something about RAC. My only complaint is the last section about the American bands. It's almost an afterthought, only about 55 pages. Other than that, superb layout, great cover, loads of pictures, bands, flyers. Feral House is great, I have never been disappointed with anything they've put out. Thanks for having the balls to publish this.

Boring minutiae from a bunch of racists By Amazon Customer I was hoping that this would be more in the style of Lords of Chaos, however it is just a bunch of stories given to the smallest detail about gigs and how much they hate folks. There is only one chapter of 30 pages covering the scene in the US in the 600 page book that is at least twice as long as it should be.

From 1890-1915, the most influential black man in America was Booker T. Washington, who less than 35 years earlier had been born into slavery. The young boy worked laboriously until emancipation before going on to seek an education. By the time he was 40, he was consolidating a network of supporters that came to be known as the “Tuskegee Machine,” helping coordinate action with the support of black businesses, religious communities, and others. With his position of power, Washington spoke out against Jim Crow laws and Southern disfranchisement of blacks.By the early 20th century, Washington’s tactics were questioned by other black leaders, notably W. E. B. Du Bois, who wanted to protest more vehemently in an effort to secure civil rights. Washington believed confrontation would only hurt the cause, and that cooperation and softer tones would wear down racism over time. To that end, both men wrote voluminously in support of their stances and thoughts. Washington wrote 14 books, including his renowned autobiography, Up From Slavery, which was published in 1901. Washington continues to be recognized for helping to improve the relationships between blacks and whites, as well as helping blacks get further access to education and civil rights.

The Future of the American Negro, by Booker T. Washington

About the Author Booker T. Washington was an African-American teacher, author, presidential advisor, and civil-rights leader. Born in Virginia in 1856, Washington was of the last generation born into slavery. After emancipation, Washington attended college in Virginia, and gained fame as a result of his 1895 speech about the importance of educating African Americans and his belief that African Americans were capable of great feats through education. Washington s contribution to educational equality was made greater by his influence in the social circles of millionaires and self-starters, and he was the first African American invited to the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Booker T. Washington published five books with the aid of ghost writers, among them his first autobiography The Story of My Life and Work and his bestselling second biography Up from Slavery, which earned him his invite to the White House. Washington was also responsible for founding the National Negro Business League, which has, since 1966, been incorporated into Washington D.C. as the National Business League.

Washington, an ex-slave, had founded the Tuskagee Institute. His premise was that black Americans, who had been freed only a generation before, needed education and livelihoods more than they needed anything else. He had a very common sense approach. Nine out of the 10 million American blacks lived in the South, and 80 percent of them were on the land. Not only that, but the land had been poorly managed since the Civil War. W.E.B. Du Bois, born free in New England, had a less sanguine view of the situation.Washington proposed to teach the blacks how to become good stewards of the land. He advocated above all that they become the owners of their own land. They needed to end the sharecropping and mortgaging which kept them indebted to the white man. They needed to learn trades. He pointed out the irony of the fact that white masters had done a good job of educating slaves in the manual arts, but as the slave generation was dying, young black men were not being trained to take their place. They were losing ground. This is a practical book by a practical man. He had an unclouded view of the situation of his people. He speaks directly to the lack of education, the crime, the ignorance and the credulity. He also speaks to the good qualities of his people. He stresses their loyalty as employees, and even their loyalty to their white masters as they were away fighting for the Confederacy. It is a very illuminating view of a tumultuous period in American history, between reconstruction and the turn-of-the-century.Washington's Tuskagee Institute turned out large numbers of teachers, whom he sent into the rural hinterlands of the American South to start schools for colored children. He is sympathetic to the budgetary problems of black and white alike. One would almost say too sympathetic; he accepts rather easily the fact that the white governments allocated the lions share of funding to white schools. Rather than agitate for more money, he enjoins the teachers he has sent forth to get the communities to raise money for their own schools and to extend schooling from the customary three months out of the year to seven or eight. One of the strong impressions one gets from this reading is the amount of interest and investment that Northern abolitionists and sympathizers made in the reconstruction of the South. Washington got a lot of financial support, and was aided by a surprising number of northern schoolteachers. Specifically, the war had widowed a number of educated white women, many of whom found a calling in heading South for the great project of educating former slaves.Washington had great hopes for the two races working successfully together. He was inclined not to notice racial discrimination unless it was thrust on him. In this he differs from the other towering black intellectual of his age, W E B Du Bois. Du Bois could see the humanity in the white man, but he could also chronicle how unfair the system was, and how difficult it was to untangle the structural racism that pervaded society. Still, for all their differences, it is heartening to see the respect that these two men had for each other. You do not see it in this work by Washington, but you do in Du Bois, who wrote somewhat later.Enjoy this book as a celebration of clear and articulate writing, a very good mirror of the exciting times in which the author lived, and a commentary on what has been the most important issue in American public life since Tocqueville first said as much in the 1830s, and up until the present.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Book By Ray D'Aguanno Great information put forth by one of America's true heroes Mr. Booker T Washington. He was quite ahead of his time by encouraging blacks to learn skills and to become educated. Mr. Washington believed that through learning skills and becoming successful that it would encourage and raise up not just the black race but any race. Mr. Washington put forth his ideas into action at Tuskegee University where it thousands of men and women were transformed to productive citizens with great education. He believed also that by following the path of a good Christian would also raise up all people.Unfortunately, nearly every university has moved away from biblical teachings and encouraging strong Judeo-Christian values. We need more men like Booker T Washington especially today!

Blankenship This well done essay from Washington is a bit of a summation of Mr. Washington's many speeches and an accumulation of various articles he wrote through his life time. This work, like most, must be viewed from a historical perspective, i.e. Washington was a product of his times. Agree or disagree with his observatons and recommendations, this is still a great work and wonderful research too. If you can find a copy, buy it and hang on to it...the older the better. If nothing else, it is a good investment. Recommend this one highly.
